When Victor Scott directs a play at Kucom, you just know it's going to be an extraordinary piece of theatre. You know you’ll be strapped into an emotional rollercoaster  and be swept up with epic intensity - and yet, despite knowing this, every time I see one of Victor's shows, I’m caught off guard by how much the emotion hits.

“The Father”, by Florian Zeller is, in itself, a literary masterpiece. It's won a ton of International awards (and was nominated for a Tony!!!) so the fact that we get to see it here in Mackay is no mean feat!

Before I get into the Kucom production, I'll let you know that the story of “The Father” is charming and devastating. It may seem familiar for some, and for others, a fear that one day it will be familiar.

To put it bluntly...

....Memories are your memories... But also.... Are they?

Victor, as always, knows how to bring out the best in his cast and flood the audience with all the feelings. There is care and attention to detail everywhere, evidenced by the set and staging - one of my favourites so far! No spoilers, but study it all closely!

You also need to pay attention when journeying on this emotional expedition. I don't want to tell you the moment that my brain went "waaaaait a minute", but I can tell you I thought it more than once during this show...

The cast, as expected, are brilliant. Gordon Lowe, Sarah Nievandt, Richelle Hodson and Michael Brennan each deliver standout performances. I want you to know, that these people are mesmerising. I was hooked with every line, every word, every glance...

Geoff Stewart Mclean as Andre, is extraordinary, in his most powerful character yet. His ability to pull you in, while repelling you, while making you want more, is, well, a work of art.

Anzjuli Venter, as Anne, portrays incredible depth - strong and stoic, yet remarkably warm - I felt every ounce of her torment. Just incredible.

In the end, each member of the cast delivered, and I was left breathless...

.... This level of talent is why we keep coming back to watch Victor's shows....

From London's West End, to Broadway, to Sydney and now at Kucom, “The Father” is world-class theatre, hand-delivered to us, in our own backyard. I don't care if you have plans. Cancel them and see this show. And then... Come back and watch it again...

The past 12 months have been nothing short of remarkable for Whitsundays-based actor Jean-Pierre Yerma (JP) who has added a string of major credits to his growing career.

After years of honing his craft at NIDA and Sydney’s Actors Pulse, JP has seen his hard work pay off with back-to-back roles that highlight his versatility on screen. “It’s been incredible,” he said. “The roles coming my way recently have been doctors, fathers and witnesses—there’s definitely a theme, but each one has been rewarding in its own way.”

JP has featured in Romance in the Vineyard, which was shot in Queensland, and that connection later helped bring film crews north, with the Whitsundays becoming the backdrop for Steve Jaggi’s Love Is in the Air (2024) starring Delta Goodrem.

Although JP missed out on appearing in that production, the experience strengthened his ties to the industry and to promoting the region as a filming destination.

This year, however, JP secured one of his most significant roles yet, starring as Dr Marcus O’Brien in the upcoming film Boss Cat. Shot in the Blue Mountains, the emotional story pairs him with celebrated Australian actor Penny Downie, whose credits include The Crown and Downton Abbey. “When we did the table read, people were in tears by the end,” he said. “It’s a beautifully written story and one I’m proud to be part of.”

With momentum building, JP says the past year has been his best to date and urges other local Whitsunday residents to get out there and act.

“Stay optimistic. Work on your craft. Get your skills, learn as much as you can from teachers and those in the field. Fill up your toolbox with skills—learn accents, learn different techniques,” said JP.

“Study the great actors, watch films, study their work, their commitment to roles, and their transformations.

“Most importantly, follow your dream and passion. You’re going to get knocked down but just get up and keep going. That’s the magic—just keep going.”

Mackay shook, sang, and danced like never before as Rhythm and The Reef 2025 smashed records, drawing over 7,200 fans across two unforgettable days. The festival kicked off with an exclusive Friday pre-party at McGuire’s Hotel before erupting into full swing at Meadowlands Amphitheatre on Saturday, 23 August.

Award-winning Amy Shark headlined, backed by a powerhouse mix of Australian favourites and rising local stars, delivering a performance that had music lovers on their feet and the crowd buzzing from start to finish.

Organisers and partners described the festival as a triumph of teamwork, creativity, and sheer passion, while local leaders celebrated its impact on Mackay’s cultural scene and the region’s growing reputation as a destination for world-class music and arts.

With record-breaking crowds, electrifying performances, and a festival spirit that won’t quit, Rhythm and The Reef has firmly stamped Mackay on the map as a festival hotspot.

Mackay music and arts festival Rhythm and The Reef recorded its largest crowd to date in 2025, with over 7,200 in attendance across the two days.

Following an exclusive Friday night pre-party at McGuire’s Hotel, the main festival took place on Saturday, 23 August at Meadowlands Amphitheatre.

This year’s headline act, multiple award-winning artist Amy Shark, was joined by a lineup of well-known Australian performers and emerging local talent, as the festival came alive with diverse programming, tailored for both underage crowds and 18+ partygoers.

Amy Shark’s headline performance on Saturday night was one of the most anticipated moments of the weekend, with thousands gathering to watch her live.

“I really enjoyed this performance and it was so good to get back to Mackay,” Ms Amy Shark said.

“It was amazing to see how the crowd responded, they were so energetic and fun.”

Director of naming rights partner FMS Group, Jason Smith, said our team were “excited to be involved with an event of this calibre”.

“Our support goes beyond financial backing – we also provided logistical and operational support that contributed to the overall delivery of the event, alongside other key partners,” Mr Smith said.

Capping off a huge weekend of music and arts, Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said the event was a credit to the organisers.

“Council is proud to be able to support this tremendous event that brings some phenomenally talented performers to our region,” Mayor Williamson said.

“This was a fitting five-year anniversary for what has proven to be a standout music festival for north Queensland,” he said.

“Amy Shark was a fantastic headliner and it’s great to see music lovers coming out to support this event that goes from strength to strength every year.”

The St Patrick's College Cultural Showcase is being held on Thursday 4 September at the Bluewater Quay, in conjunction with the Riverside Markets.

A surge of local creativity has seen 17 artist books from Mackay region artists entered into the 2025 Libris Awards, setting a new record for participation. Some creations are crafted from delicate rice paper, others reflect the Mackay region’s unique environment, while some tell stories of past love.

Five of the works were selected for the main exhibition at Artspace Mackay, while 10 others will be showcased in a complementary display, Little Libris, highlighting the skill and imagination of the region’s artists.

Little Libris will be on display at the Jubilee Community Centre Exhibition Foyer Space from Tuesday, 19 August, to Friday, 29 August, between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Artspace Mackay Director Tracey Heathwood said the exhibition showcased the creativity and craftsmanship of local artists working in the medium of artist books.

“This exhibition is a testament to the growing strength of the artist book community in the Mackay region and a wonderful opportunity for the public to engage with these unique and intimate works of art,” Ms Heathwood said.

“This is a celebration of the local entries, artist book entries, into our 2025 Libris Awards. It complements our larger awards exhibition that features works from across Australia,” she said.

“Little Libris is very much celebrating all of the local artists who submitted entries. This year we had a record number of submissions from our local artists, and we were keen to celebrate that,” she added.

“Artist books are a type of artwork. They represent or take the form of a book and are a really popular medium, especially for Artspace Mackay. Lots of people don’t realise that Mackay Regional Council has one of the largest collections of artist books in Australia,” Ms Heathwood explained.

“I love artist books for their intimacy, and lots of artists love them because it’s an opportunity to explore one idea or concept over multiple pages. There’s a natural narrative that allows detailed storytelling through this medium,” she said.

The Libris Awards are in their ninth year, marking the overall Australian awards for artist books. “But this is the first time that we've hosted a smaller exhibition of our local entries,” Ms Heathwood said.

Featured artists in Little Libris include Janet Ambrose, Charlene Attard, Matteo Calisti, Pam Finlay, Sue Houston, Traci Lietzke, Michelle McKenzie, Bonnie Shore, and Kerry Williams.

Little Libris coincides with the main Libris Awards exhibition of finalists and winners, currently on display in Artspace Mackay’s Main Gallery until Sunday, 14 September.

“Both exhibitions are a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary book arts. Little Libris runs until 29 August, while our larger Libris Awards exhibition continues until mid-September,” Ms Heathwood added.

For a town more accustomed to footy finals and fishing weekends, this is a rare and exciting occasion.

Cosentino isn’t just any magician, he’s a global phenomenon. With nine prime-time television specials broadcast in more than 40 countries and watched by over 750 million people worldwide, he has become a household name both in Australia and abroad. His career boasts multiple Merlin Awards, including magic’s highest honour, sold-out shows across Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia, and even a role alongside Jackie Chan in the international blockbuster Bleeding Steel.

And now, Mackay audiences will have the opportunity to witness him live.

“TRICKED – An Evening of Wonder is my brand-new production,” Cosentino said in an interview with Mackay Life.

“It’s got crazy, death-defying escapes, grand illusions, people appearing, disappearing, levitating, and close-up magic projected onto giant screens.

“I invite people up on stage… it’s all very intricate, detailed, with close-up magic.”

Cosentino’s shows are a blend of theatre, comedy, spectacle and drama.

“It makes for a pretty unique and different show because you’re getting elements of musical theatre, stand-up comedy, drama, and then there's tricks and stunts you’ve probably never seen before,” he said.

Cosentino’s fascination with magic began at age 12 when he made a 20-cent coin disappear in front of his father, who was a structural engineer.

“There was this huge transfer of power, because I could finally do something my father couldn’t.

“And that was it. The obsession kicked in from there,” he recalled.

From that moment to international tours across the globe, Cosentino has built a career on the edge of danger. He’s been chained underwater, dodged falling blades, and performed escapes that defy belief. Yet, he insists his shows aren’t about showing off, but about connecting with his audience and delivering a show that truly entertains.

“I love seeing the response from the audience – creating that astonishment, making people believe in magic for just 90 minutes and letting their worries go away,” he said.

“It’s not about me saying, ‘Look how clever I am, I fooled you.’ It’s about entertaining you.”

While his touring schedule leaves little room for sightseeing, Cosentino says he is thrilled to finally bring his most ambitious show yet to Mackay.

“I’m excited to be back on the road with a new show and I cannot wait to see the excitement from the audience.

“We’re putting a lot of love into this… I cannot wait for everyone to see it.”

Mackay Musical Comedy Players (MMCP), the community theatre organisation that has brought audiences smash-hit productions like Mamma Mia!, Chicago, The Addams Family and most recently Footloose, is proud to present the original story of Evita, the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical that immortalises Argentina’s most controversial First Lady, Eva Perón.

Driven by ambition and blessed with undeniable charisma, Eva Perón’s life reads like a script. She escaped her dirt-poor beginnings at just 15, became a starlet by 22, the President’s mistress at 24, First Lady at 27, and tragically died at only 33. To the working class she was a saint, to the aristocracy she was despised, and to the military she was never trusted. Her meteoric rise and fall left a complex political legacy that still fascinates the world today.

Director Marina Duncan says bringing Evita to the stage during the company’s milestone year has been especially rewarding. “I have been grateful to be directing Evita for the club’s 60th anniversary with its abundance of talent both on and off stage.”

That talent is led by Kyra Geoghegan in the role of Eva Perón. “I’m thrilled to be playing Eva Perón,” she says, describing the role as a dream opportunity to embody such a complex and iconic figure.

Opposite her is Ken Brown as Juan Perón, whose leadership and influence shaped Eva’s rise to power. Brown says, “I’m excited to bring Juan Perón, a controversial figure, to life on the stage with this amazing cast and crew.”

Serving as the narrator and voice of conscience throughout the story is Che Guevara, played by David Goodwin. Taking on the role has been a personal challenge. “I am now comfortably out of my comfort zone, and have taken on the enormous and complex role of Che Guevara; the conscience of a nation,” he explains.

With a stirring score that includes the iconic Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina, MMCP’s Evita promises to be a highlight of the club’s 60th anniversary weekend, a production full of passion, politics, and unforgettable performances.

Evita is brought to life by a skilled creative team: Marina Duncan (Director), Amy Jeffcoat (Assistant Director), Nicole Thomson (Musical Director), Zoe Jaenke (Assistant Musical Director), Breenna Quinn (Assistant Musical Director), Robyn Franke (Choreographer) and Tonia Beckmann (Producer).

Kucom Theatre will shortly be holding auditions for Summer Shorts, a season of one-act plays showcasing in November 2025.

Summer Shorts will feature three short comedies, including a reprise of Last Tango in Little Grimley, by David Tristram, which won Kucom two major awards at last year’s North Queensland Festival of One-Act Plays in Townsville: Best Director and Best Play.

The program also includes: Bloody Actors, by Archie Wilson. A group of retired actors living in a nursing home try to get along but are hampered by events from their past careers. The answer seems to lie in preparing and performing a play for the other residents. Cast required: 4 females, 2 males.

Ashes to Dust, by Yvette Wall: on the day that her late father’s ashes are due to be scattered, his daughter arrives at the family home to find her mother with another man – and clearly enjoying herself far more than she ought to. Cast required: 2 females, 2 males.

Multi music award winner Jessica Mauboy will make her first Airlie Beach Festival of Music appearance this November.

The much-loved Australian music legend first gained recognition on Australian Idol but in an exclusive interview with Whitsunday Life Newspaper, she said performing live is her ultimate joy.

“Being able to play it live, is my ultimate favourite. So, it’s an absolute honour and opportunity to be able to do that in Airlie Beach. I'm looking forward to that,” she said.

“I love to get to know the people because that's what really makes it right, the people and obviously the energy and the spirit of the place.

“I'm looking forward to really indulging it, as much as I love performing, I really love getting to know a place.”

A Warm Whitsunday Welcome For Jessica Mauboy

Airlie Beach Festival of Music headliner Jessica Mauboy is set to bring songs from her entire discography including her first and second albums, and maybe even some hit songs from the feature film The Sapphires, plus a range of her newer music.

Her newest song ‘While I Got Time’, featured as Irene Robert's farewell on Home and Away, and Mauboy said the brief she was given from her publisher was inspiring.

“She says to me, I've got dot points that the third party have sent over and they would love you to write a song about your loved ones. what it's like if you were to venture out and leave, what would you leave behind? What kind of legacy would you like to leave behind? A song about in-depth reflection about life. And so, I did that.”

“The intentional production was very intimate and just little harmonies here and there, just to kind of hear the guitar play, the emotions of the lyrics and the voice, is what we wanted.

“I've never been a part of a project like that in my life. So this was really unexpected, but such a really warm project and sincere experience I've never been a part of.”

Jessica Mauboy is also fresh off being inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMA) Hall of Fame.

“I think having grown up in Darwin and the Northern Territory, to receive an award in my hometown that I love so dearly, to be presented that by my own community and my elders and people who I admire in at the NIMA’s, I was really in disbelief,” she said.

“I stand with the award with pride and honour.”

Mauboy is also keen to support local initiatives like Passport to Airlie, which gives emerging musicians the chance to perform at future Airlie Beach Festival of Music events.

“Our local stages are so important, so, we need to take care of them, we need to nurture them. As much as the big stages outside are amazing. You always remember the beginning of it and I still remember my first stage,” she said.

“The one thing I would say is learn from that experience. Learn from the stages. Learn from the people who build the stages from ground, and who create the festivals and take care of them.”
