Last Tuesday, the Mackay Isaac Region kicked off 2025 with the launch of its bold new destination events campaign, “Keep Up.”

The campaign, unveiled by Mackay Isaac Tourism, aims to inspire visitors to explore the region’s exciting adventures, vibrant events, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

“Keep Up” encourages travellers of all ages to embrace the spirit of discovery and connection throughout the Mackay Isaac Region.

Mackay Isaac Tourism CEO Jeff Stewart-Harris said that the region's events calendar competes with those of neighbouring destinations, making it the ideal time to launch a campaign centred around major events.

"Events provide the opportunity for engagement with a broad audience who have the propensity to stay in region for longer or to visit in non-peak periods,” Mr Stewart-Harris said.

“‘Keep Up’ challenges travellers to match the vibrant rhythm of Mackay Isaac, where there's always something new to explore.

"From national sporting events like Mackay Marina Run and Fox Superflow to cultural festivals like the Mackay Festival of Arts and St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, this campaign highlights the pioneering spirit that defines our region."

In the year ending June 2024, the Mackay Isaac Region welcomed 1.2 million overnight visitors - a 3.7 per cent increase - which includes a doubling in leisure visitation (up 19.3 per cent) since 2019, with spending continuing to surge over the same period to $803.1 million (up 51.3 per cent).

"What's especially exciting is the strong growth in holiday visitors, complementing our traditionally robust business visitor sector," Mr Stewart-Harris added.

"This campaign is about momentum.

“We want travellers to feel the thrill of what's next, encouraging them to stay longer and keep discovering the incredible moments that make Mackay Isaac unforgettable.

"Whether you're cheering at a sports event, hiking through lush rainforest trails, or dancing the night away at a festival, the “Keep Up” campaign captures the essence of what makes our region so special.”

Mackay region art followers can experience more than 60 contemporary and historical works from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Indigenous Australian Art collection when the exhibition ‘I, Object’ tours Artspace Mackay from January 18 to March 30.

‘I, Object’ features contemporary painting, sculpture and installation by leading Queensland artists Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Michael Boiyool Anning, Fiona Foley, Danie Mellor, Christian Thompson, Warraba Weatherall and others, alongside 20 historical shields, boomerangs and clubs.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said ‘I, Object’ was an exhibition first developed by Bruce Johnson McLean, former Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at QAGOMA, and shown at the Gallery of Modern Art from August 2020 to August 2021.

“We’re really thrilled this iteration of ‘I, Object’ will now tour to audiences in regional Queensland including Rockhampton, Caboolture, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Cairns and Mackay,” Mr Saines said.

“‘I, Object’ considers the many complex relationships Indigenous Australian artists continue to have with objects – from the histories informing their creation to the social and cultural consequences of their collection,” he said.

“The exhibition demonstrates the great pride and inspiration of inherited cultural practices and historical Indigenous objects, and reveals the difficulties posed by their collection and estrangement.”

Deputy Mayor Karen May said it was exciting to have this significant exhibition of Indigenous Australian Art at our gallery.

“We’re grateful to QAGOMA for touring this exhibition to our gallery, providing an opportunity for us all to experience this important expression of identity, culture and connection,” Cr May said.

“This exhibition will run alongside three others opening in our Foundation and Foyer galleries also from January 18,” she said.

Thea Anamara Perkins: Dualities will be in the Foundation Gallery. These works incorporate portraiture and landscape to question representations of First Nations peoples and Country.
Danish Quapoor is a multidisciplinary artist based in Townsville. He is known for his distinctive flat-colour works which employ narratives that interrogate personal identity.
Quapoor’s mural installation ‘departed’, on the gallery’s foyer wall, will reflect upon departures from environments, situations and relationships.

Anneke Silver’s Iconic Moments will be in the Foyer Gallery and features expressive brush strokes of rich outback colour. They explore relationships between symbol and experience – the everyday and the extraordinary.

Cape Hillsborough’s Between the Tides has captured global attention, earning two prestigious accolades that cement its status as a leader in cultural tourism.  

Securing Silver in the Cultural Tourism category at the Queensland Tourism Awards and the Best Music Tourism Initiative at the 2024 Global Music Cities Awards in Riyadh, this event is set to shine as the centrepiece of the 2025 QLD Music Trails, The Reef.

Held on Yuwi Country, the event has captivated audiences with its extraordinary fusion of music, First Nations culture, and eco-tourism. Staged against the backdrop of Cape Hillsborough National Park, the event aligns with the tidal rhythms of the coastline, offering a one-of-a-kind experience that connects visitors to the region’s cultural significance.

The international acclaim speaks to the event’s innovation and impact. Winning the Best Music Tourism Initiative award at the Global Music Cities Awards places Between the Tides among the world’s most forward-thinking events. The accolade recognises its unique approach to uniting environmental education, cultural storytelling, and world-class music performances to create a deeply immersive experience.

Between the Tides generated 122 visitor nights in the Mackay region, primarily from intrastate visitors, contributing $149,269 in direct and incremental expenditure to Queensland’s economy, with $78,247 benefitting the Mackay region directly.

Reckless the Australian Crawl tribute show are back in town for another banger of a weekend this February 1st. Performing to their favourite audience in their second home at The Pub, Reckless is gearing up for a show that's not to be missed.
All the band members have come together to pay homage to one of Australia’s most iconic bands: Australian Crawl! Officially endorsed by Australian Crawl themselves , Reckless will take you back in time to April of 1980, when the band was catapulted into the thick of the Australian Rock scene.
Bop along to three and a half hours of the best rock music hits from a band whose stage presence is second to none. Expect hits like The Boys Light Up album like Daughters Of The Northern Coast, Indisposed, Thing’s Don’t Seem, Lakeside, Oh No Not You Again and of course the album's title song.
A performance packed to the roof with high energy, great musical talent, and amazing vocals. All members of the Reckless band have extensive experience in live performances and played with many of the country’s top cover bands, even working alongside several legends in the Aussie music scene themselves. The Mackay Musical Comedy Players are thrilled to announce their upcoming production of Goldilocks & The Three Bears, a fresh and playful reimagining of the beloved fairytale that sets the tone for the theatre group's 60th anniversary. This lively, family-friendly pantomime is set to delight audiences with humour, music, and engaging storytelling.
Directed by MMCP Life Member Kristyn Everett, with choreography and co-direction by Leisa Persson (Theatre Bug Mackay) and musical direction by Sharon Thompson (The Voice Studio Mackay), this production promises a theatrical experience that’s both magical and memorable.
Goldilocks & The Three Bears tells the classic story of a curious girl, a family of three bears, and, of course, a bowl of porridge, but with a pantomime twist! Packed with silliness, jokes, daft characters, and plenty of audience participation, this production is perfect for audiences of all ages.
