Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Contributed with thanks to PCYC Queensland’s First Nations State Partnerships Manager Michael Cedar 1-4 - Spirits were high as Mackay’s young dancing stars took to the stage. Photos supplied.

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Xavier Rudd, Mental as Anything, The Whitlams and more on first lineup announcement for November 2026 The call is out for fans of Xavier Rudd to ‘Follow the Sun’ to the 2026 Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 6-8. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. Having visited Airlie Beach briefly on previous Australian tours, Rudd is already familiar with the region’s scenic beauty, but this will be his first time playing its signature event, dubbed a ‘party in paradise’ and the ‘ultimate music holiday’. “From the photos I’ve seen, the festival setting is amazing,” he said. “My music is definitely a celebration of our natural world, so a place like Airlie feels especially aligned with songs like ‘Follow the Sun’. “These are the kinds of shows I love, and hopefully, weather permitting, we can actually pull down the tent and play under the stars!” Equally as famous for his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism as he is for his extraordinary gifts as a musician, the significance of playing at a destination known as the ‘Heart of the Great Barrier Reef’ isn’t lost on Rudd. “I’ve been lucky to witness some of the good work that people are doing in the world of reef regeneration and that’s inspiring,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue down that path.” Also urging festivalgoers to ‘Live it Up’ in Airlie Beach is beloved Australian band Mental As Anything, whose performance will form part of a historic 50th anniversary tour, comprising a limited number of exclusive festival appearances and select metropolitan headline shows. Original member and iconic pop artist, Reg Mombassa, is promising fans a rare and unforgettable opportunity to experience the band’s timeless hits live once more, and celebrate their unique blend of songwriting, artistry, and performance flair. “We’re known for being a party band, so the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is a perfect fit,” he said. In total agreeance that there’s ‘No Aphrodisiac’ quite like it are The Whitlams, whose frontman Tim Freedman says the band is thrilled to be one of the festival’s headliners for 2026. “I’ve been wanting to return to the Whitsundays for decades and now we have the chance,” he said, adding: “it’s a great line-up, music lifts the soul, and we rock!” Other additions to the first line-up release include The Radiators, Adam Harvey, 19-Twenty, Skinny Living (UK), Little Quirks, The Mason Rack Band, The Wayward Suns, Loonaloop, Salt & Steel and the Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s 2025 Passport to Airlie competition winners Monroe. Tickets are on sale now at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au costing $325 for a three-day pass, or $1100 for a VIP package, both including entry to the opening and after parties that bookend the main event. From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Northern Beaches To Come Alive With Creativity At Inaugural Art In The Park

August 7, 2025

The Mackay Northern Beaches will soon come alive with colour, music, and creativity as the community gears up for the launch of Art in the Park 2025 on Saturday, the 20th of September. This brand-new community arts event will unfold across Bucasia Esplanade, Shoal Point, and the Northern Beaches Community Hall, inviting people of all ages to gather, create, and celebrate the spirit of the Northern Beaches.

Delivered by the Northern Beaches Community Network and the Mackay Northern Beaches Lions Club, the event has been made possible through a 2025 Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mackay Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

A celebration of both creativity and connection, the one-day festival offers a diverse program filled with hands-on art workshops, musical experiences, and community-based activities in some of the region’s most scenic outdoor spaces.

“Art in the Park is about more than art—it’s about belonging,” said Rebecca Cooper, Project Lead and member of the Northern Beaches Community Network.

“It brings people together to share creative experiences, make memories and celebrate our beautiful part of the world in meaningful, joyful ways.”

The day’s program has something for everyone, from young children to older adults. Workshops include nature mandalas, clay creations, kite making, gel plate printing with Print Bank, ceramic painting, eco-friendly art, and weaving. Artists like Kate Kennedy will lead acrylic painting sessions, and members of the Mackay Art Society will guide plein air oil painting. A highlight of the day will be “The Great Create Morning”, a free-flowing creative gathering in the parklands of Bucasia Esplanade.

Musical elements will play a key role, with live music performances, a Rhythm Circle, and a meditative Sound Journey. The Teen Music Jam Workshop, led by Kiersten Hart, will offer tweens and teens a chance to explore music, build confidence, and connect with others in a supportive space.

“Our Northern Beaches Community Roadmap identified a key need for connection and creativity in our community, with a specific focus on families, youth and our seniors. Here’s the gathering you’ve been looking for—support it,” said Antoinette du Toit, Co-Founder of the Northern Beaches Community Network.

Volunteers will be essential in bringing the event to life, and community members are encouraged to get involved. Volunteer roles range from event set-up and pack down to running welcome desks and assisting at workshops. Those interested in helping out can email nbcweek@gmail.com to sign up.

Bookings for workshops are now open, with most activities offered at a significantly reduced cost. Spots are limited, so early registration is recommended. Bookings are not required for The Great Create Morning, but organisers kindly ask attendees to bring a small cash donation, which will go directly back into supporting local arts initiatives. Card facilities will also be available on the day.

“I hope this event inspires people not just to attend, but to think more broadly about the role they can play in our community,” said Rebecca Cooper.

“For me, my motivation is the community I want my children to grow up in - one where they feel at home in their community, know the neighbourhood kids, and enjoy being active and creative in the great outdoors which are so plentiful in our area.”

Support from local organisations like the Mackay Northern Beaches Lions Club has played a pivotal role in making this project a reality.

“We’re incredibly proud to support this project and contribute to improving the wellbeing of the Northern Beaches,” said Doug Petersen, President of the Mackay Northern Beaches Lions Club.

“Lions is all about showing up in our community and this is a classic example of this - we know that when people are feeling good, they too are more likely to do good.”

To stay updated on Art in the Park 2025 and other local events, follow Northern Beaches Our Community on Facebook and Instagram. For more information about RADF or to apply for future arts funding, visit www.mackay.qld.gov.au/radf.

With art, music, nature, and community spirit at its heart, Art in the Park 2025 promises to be a memorable day of creativity and connection for all.

Mackay Marina Comes Alive To Mark Lighthouse Milestone

August 7, 2025

The Mackay Marina was abuzz with colour, music and community spirit last Sunday as locals gathered to celebrate the 140th birthday of the historic Pine Islet Lighthouse.

Under clear skies and a gentle sea breeze, crowds flocked to the Marina Precinct along Mulherin Drive for a day packed with market stalls, live music, face painting, food trucks, raffles and the perfect vantage point to watch the yachts from the Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race glide into the harbour.

The star of the celebration was the Pine Islet Lighthouse, which was originally built in 1885 and is now proudly housed at the Mackay Marina after being saved from destruction. Once the last kerosene-powered lighthouse in Australia, it stood as a beacon of local heritage throughout the day’s festivities.

Families, tourists and sailing enthusiasts alike soaked up the vibrant atmosphere, all while reflecting on a lighthouse that has weathered 140 years of history — now shining as a proud symbol of Mackay’s maritime legacy.

Freestyle Kings Return To Mackay With High-Flying 2026 World Tour

August 7, 2025

Mackay is revving up for the return of Freestyle Kings Live, “the greatest show on two wheels”, with the high-octane action sports spectacular locked in for Saturday, the 6th of June, 2026, at BB Print Stadium.

Returning as part of a massive six-country, 50-show World Tour, Freestyle Kings Live promises a night packed with gravity-defying stunts and edge-of-your-seat thrills and organisers are determined to deliver a show Mackay will never forget.

Billed as a family-friendly, all-ages event, the show brings together the world’s best riders in both Freestyle Motocross and BMX. It is headlined by none other than Robbie Maddison, a modern-day Evel Knievel, and his two young sons, Kruz (14) and Jagger (11), who are quickly becoming stars in their own right.

“At 43 years old, it is no secret that I am closer to the end of my freestyle motocross career than I am to the start,” said Maddison.

“My accomplishments on a dirt bike have been beyond my wildest dreams, but by far my greatest achievement is watching my three boys share the same passion I have for this sport, and to see them push through the nerves and perform in sell out shows across the globe.

“They are little showmen at heart, and whilst I might be a bit bias, I think it’s the crowd’s favourite part of the show.”

For sons Kruz and Jagger, it’s all about family.

“We weren’t alive for his first big jumps, but he always shows us on YouTube and tells us how cool he used to be,” Kruz joked.

“Mum comes to all our shows; she is our biggest cheerleader, although she is probably more nervous than us when it comes to our turn to jump in the show,” added Jagger.

The Maddison family won’t be the only stars touching down in Mackay. Joining them will be 20-time X-Games gold medallist and back-to-back Freestyle Motocross World Champion, Rob Adelberg.

Originally from regional Victoria, Adelberg has travelled the world for two decades performing and competing – but says regional Aussie crowds are something special.

“I can tell you, there is no better crowd to ride in front of than in places like Mackay,” Adelberg said.

“Make no mistake, these are the best riders on the planet, who will be throwing down tricks that need to be seen to be believed.”

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said hosting Freestyle Kings Live is a major win for the region.

“Council is really happy to be able to help bring these death-defying extreme sports performers to our region through our Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction Fund,” he said.

“Events like this transform the feel of a city and create a real buzz when they are in our region – they bring people to town to be part of the excitement.

“A show of this magnitude has an estimated economic impact of more than half a million dollars and puts a lot of extra heads on beds around the region.”

Freestyle Kings promoter Josh Hannah said regional Australia was always front of mind when planning tours of this scale.

“Regional Australia has a deep affinity and love for all things dirt bike and BMX, so it just made sense for us to take this tour to areas that wouldn’t traditionally get this type of world class entertainment,” Mr Hannah said.

“Whilst we have our rider line up come in from across Australia and the USA, we source everything else locally in Mackay, from food and beverages, to ushers, security, machinery and everything else needed to pull off a show like this.

“We obviously get a lot out of these shows, but we like to think we give a lot back to a regional centre like Mackay."

Mr Hannah also acknowledged the weather challenges during their last visit.

“We know we didn’t give the people of Mackay our best ever show in 2024.

“The content of us riding through treacherous rain went viral, with over 50 million views, but we have moved the show to later in the year, to try and avoid a repeat of this happening.

“We appreciate the people of Mackay greatly, and look forward to redemption in front of an extremely passionate action sports fan base.”

Registration forms for early bird presale can be found online at www.freestylekings.com.

‘Name Our Croc’

August 7, 2025

Festival Comp Launches With Snappy Prizes

Mackay’s beloved music and arts festival, Rhythm and The Reef, recently called on the community to help name its giant inflatable croc. The naming competition launched last Friday, with entries set to close this afternoon, Friday 8 August, at 5pm.

Submissions can be made via the festival’s social media channels, with the winning entry receiving a Festival Family Pass (two 18+ and two under-18 tickets), an EVA Motors e-scooter kit, a poster signed by all the festival artists and a backstage tour of the venue.

Director of naming rights partner FMS Group, Jason Smith, said they are “excited to see this eye-catching inflatable croc,” on display at the Meadowlands Amphitheatre on 22-23 August festival weekend.

“We’ve heard some wild suggestions already, but we know Mackay will come through with something clever, cheeky and unforgettable,” Mr Smith said.

Co-Event Organiser Dr James Slade said the ‘Name Our Croc’ competition was a “fun way to bring people together and set the tone for what’s going to be an incredible weekend”.

“What better way to kick things off than getting everyone to help name the croc?” Dr Slade said.

Alongside the musical lineup and 8m high inflatable croc, the festival will feature family-friendly entertainment, while also celebrating fresh support from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) to nurture youth creativity through Rhythm and The Reef’s Arts & Music Scholarship.

Co-Event Organiser Michael Delaney said each year the festival has continued to “grow as a platform for music, art and creative expression in the Mackay region”.

“To mark our fifth anniversary, we’re working closely with local high schools and educational providers to help bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world,” Mr Delaney said.

“This year, we’re excited to launch a new Arts & Music Scholarship in partnership with Mackay North State High School.

“It’s a five-year scholarship worth $2,500 all up – with $500 awarded each year to a different student helping them stay supported, encouraged and inspired on their creative journey.

“We’re honored to support our community and help strengthen the grassroots music and arts scene across the region.”

Mayor Greg Williamson said, “This is just another great way we’re cementing the involvement of schools and young people in music, arts, and culture. That’s what Rhythm and The Reef delivers for our region.”

“We’ve had people from all over Australia – and even a couple of international visitors – attend Rhythm and The Reef.

“I can see this becoming an iconic feature for our region for many years to come.”

Final release tickets for Rhythm and the Reef are now on sale – visit www.rhythmandthereef.com.au or follow the festival on social media to enter the Name Our Croc comp and stay up to date.

Seagrass Theatre And Music Company Next Performance

August 7, 2025

Proserpine State High School’s Seagrass Theatre and Music Company present their highly anticipated ‘Musical Theatre Night’ on Friday 15th August.

The annual event allows students from Years 7-12 to showcase their singing and dancing talents on stage performing family-friendly classics from musicals such as ‘Chicago’, 'Les Miserables' and 'Annie' to name a few.

Established in 2021, the students have run many theatre seasons including one act plays, previous musical theatre evenings and the rock opera, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, which won the Whitsunday Australia Day Cultural Event of the Year Award earlier this year.

The students themselves perform all roles within a theatre experience from the directorial, creative, technical, design, construction, business and promotion processes.

You may recognise some of the familiar faces on stage from the school’s musical production of ‘Newsies’ in May.

Rehearsals have been held before and after school and some lunchtimes to perfect dance routines and singing numbers.

Held in the school’s incredible Performing Arts Centre, doors will open at 6pm with the show starting at 7pm sharp.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the kiosk.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 per adult or $10 per child or concession card holder.

For more information, please call the school’s Administration Office on 4945 0111.

Tec-NQ Open Day

August 7, 2025

An Event For All-Ages

To mark the beginning of celebrations for 2025 National Skills Week, on Saturday, August 23, North Queensland Senior School and training organisation, Tec-NQ, will throw open its doors for an all-ages Open Day with a difference. With 69 trades currently identified as experiencing a national skills shortage, there is no better time to try out a trade.

Tec-NQ Chief Executive Officer Ross Jorgensen said this year’s Open Day will be an all-ages celebration of everything trade, offering something of interest for the whole family.

“Again in 2025, we’ll have a selection of industry partners displaying unique and emerging technical tools of trade. Teachers, trainers, industry partners and students will also be on hand to talk about undertaking a work-based education at Tec-NQ” he added.

There will be hands-on try-a-trade activities for all ages. Kids can rev up a big diesel motor, teens can wire a circuit board, and everyone can test their welding skills on the augmented reality simulator. Plus, engage in interactive activities and small take-home projects.

Tec-NQ is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), an independent senior secondary school and an accredited boarding school with extensive industry networks to deliver trade-based career opportunities for North Queensland students. Tec-NQ House, located in Rosslea, accommodates up to 40 male boarding students from remote and rural communities completing their schooling at Tec-NQ.

The Open Day runs from 9am – 12.30pm on Saturday 23rd August at their campus at 54 Discovery Drive in Douglas. Register for a campus tour and information session at tecnq.com.au

Chris Lloyds Brings The Classics Of Tony Bennett

August 7, 2025

The smooth sounds of timeless standards will echo through the Proserpine Entertainment Centre on Thursday 14 August, as acclaimed Australian vocalist Chris Lloyds presents _Morning Melodies: For the Love of Tony & Friends, a soulful musical salute to the great Tony Bennett and other legendary crooners.

Backed by the virtuosic Jamie Rigg Band, Lloyds will take the audience on a nostalgic journey, spotlighting Bennett’s greatest hits—like I Left My Heart in San Francisco—while weaving in gems by fellow crooners that Bennett never recorded.

“I liked the idea of doing some of the songs that Tony didn’t do, that we felt he could have—just to mix it up a little,” Chris says.

Once described as “one of Australia’s most broadcast vocalists,” Chris has lent his voice to hit jingles, top session recordings, and major TV appearances, including a stint on Neighbours, all while nurturing a lifelong passion for music.

“I started singing as a choir boy,” he says.

"My grandmother was a wonderful pianist and singer of the jazz standards and the Great American Songbook, and I used to sing with her. I sang Night and Day before I probably sang Baa Baa Black Sheep.”

Lloyds delivers the show with sincerity rather than imitation. “We don’t do dress-ups,” he says.

“We have masterful musicians, and I sing the way I sing—but we're doing the songs that were hits for Bennett and the crooners that everyone recognises.”

The show begins at 11:00 AM and tickets cost $10.

Creedence Clearwater Survival Return For A Cool Performance

August 7, 2025

Fans of classic rock are in for a treat as Creedence Clearwater Survival, Australia’s premier tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival, returns to the Airlie Beach Hotel in just a few weeks.

“We play every Creedence song,” said frontman Paul Haynes, who performs under the name John Forgery.

The Melbourne-based band is known for its faithful renditions of Creedence Clearwater Revival's most beloved hits, and this performance will be no different.

“The songs will be Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son, Looking Out My Back Door, Cotton Fields, Green River, Jambalaya, Lodi, The Old Man Down the Road, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, Up Around the Bend, Centerfield, Sweet Hitch-Hiker, As Long as I Can See the Light, Heard It Through the Grapevine... it just goes on."

Paul embraces the role completely, from the voice to the costume.

“I dress up in the Creedence gear with the wig and the cowboy shirt. I go by the name of John Forgery instead of John Fogerty,” he said.

“I have the voice too, I don’t know why that is. I just do.”

The band was originally called The Fortunate Sons, and Paul joined as a singer before taking up guitar duties. “They said, ‘Well, can you play guitar?’ And I said, ‘Oh, can I!’ And then there was a few Fortunate Sons around, so we changed our name to Creedence Clearwater Survival, which sounded more recognisable as a band.”

Paul and the band are no strangers to the Airlie Beach stage. They visited in March and said they had an amazing time. Paul's only complaint... was the heat!

This time the band travels to the Airlie Beach Hotel in winter, and Paul is looking forward to the milder temperatures and break from the usual heat and humidity.

Paul said crowd interaction is a key part of the show. At one point, they lead the audience in a classic baseball clap before launching into the next song.

The band has been performing for over a decade and travels regularly.

“Most weekends, we play somewhere and we mainly do it because we love it.

Paul’s passion for music begun early. He said music has always been something that touched him deeply.

“Some people like cars, some people like art. I like music... it touches my soul.”

Catch Creedence Clearwater Survival live at the Airlie Beach Hotel later this month for a night of nostalgia, energy, and rock ‘n’ roll classics.
