Queensland boasts the greatest reef on the planet – the Great Barrier Reef. Unfortunately, Queensland also boasts the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

As a Reef lover, we want to protect the Reef but we also want to protect ourselves from the risk of skin cancer.

The absolute best way to protect one’s self from the harmful rays of the sun is to cover up. There are many options available; lycra suits (stinger suits), rashies and wetsuits to name just a few.

But these suits are not always available and when worn, rarely protect the head and hands.

So, the next best option for us is sunscreen, but perhaps not the best option for the Reef.

Sunscreens work by providing either a physical barrier or a chemical barrier from the sun’s harmful rays. Unfortunately, many of these chemicals are harmful to many Reef animals including corals. According to several research studies, it is estimated we leave behind up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen in the world’s oceans every year.

What to do?

While no sunscreen is completely safe for coral and marine life, there are choices we can make to protect ourselves while minimizing the harm to the reef.

We must choose our sunscreen carefully by checking the ingredients and looking for ingredients that are safe - for both us and the reef.

What to avoid:
Oxybenzone (also known as benzophenone-3), octinoxate (also known as octyl methoxycinnamate) and octocrylene.
Parabens (butylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben, benyzleparaben and propylparaben)
Cinnamates (Octyl methoxycinnamate and Cinoxate)
Homosalate and octisalate
Nanoparticles are so small, they can be absorbed by coral.

Many of these chemicals have been banned in several tropical regions around the world.

What to look for:

Zinc oxide and/or Titanium dioxide sunscreens are mineral sunscreens. These physically block the sun’s rays and have not been shown harmful to the reefs. They are biodegradable and hypo-allergenic.
“Non-nano” refers to particles larger than 100 nanometres and is considered safe.
Water-resistant sunscreen helps keep the product on your skin and not in the sea.
Wait at least 15 minutes after applying your sunscreen before entering the water so that your skin can absorb it and it won’t wash right off.

It is our responsibility to do what we can to safeguard the health of the reefs that we love and need. How we act in the water and the products we introduce to it are our opportunity to do just that.

Stop The Violence, End The Silence

Business owners, regional leaders, and Rotary members gathered at Ocean International last Tuesday, united in their mission to break the silence on domestic violence. Dressed in purple, attendees stood in solidarity, symbolising hope for a future free from violence. While we know change takes time, the focus remains on educating future generations and fostering respect among men, women, and children to create a safer society.

The room fell silent as DVF Project Manager Michael Buckeridge shared a sobering statistic of 134 domestic violence cases recorded in a single day.

"There are thousands of men and women suffering from this," he said.

"Thankfully, we have fantastic organisations picking up the broken pieces… but we need your help.

"We want businesses and community members to wear these purple shirts and start conversations – in their workplaces, in their schools, and amongst their friends.

"We need to reach young people – the young men in schools – to teach them respect.

“To me, respect is worth more than gold."

The Rotary Domestic & Family Violence Prevention Program continues to expand, with all 12 Mackay high schools now officially on board. Betterment Project presenters will visit from May 12–16, delivering powerful messages to students.

Momentum is building for the "Respect In Every Step: March To End Domestic Violence" on May 30, with Kinetic Buses generously covering half the transport costs. So far, 580 students have committed to the march, and the crowd is expected to surpass 1,000 participants.

The upcoming Bravus Breakfast at Ocean International on May 29 has already exceeded expectations, with 206 students and teachers confirmed to attend.

On Thursday the 17th of April, the Youth Space in Proserpine is holding a fun and festive Easter Bonanza just in time for the Easter weekend. From 3pm to 5pm bring the whole family and get creative with all the activities and crafts the Youth Space has on offer.

Australian Elvis tribute artist Damian Mullins will be performing not one, but two incredible shows that will transport you straight to the heart of the King of Rock and Roll’s most iconic eras. Damian’s journey to becoming one of Australia’s top Elvis tribute artists began with a childhood love for the King’s music. "As a young boy, my mum loved his music, she would play it when we travelled in the car. That's how I was exposed to his music, and ever since then, I have just loved his songs," Damian shares. His passion for Elvis (and jumpsuit collection) has grown over the years, and he continues to bring the legendary performer’s spirit to life on stage with every stunning performance.

In 2012 he won the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, a competition endorsed by Elvis Presley Enterprises. From that moment, his career as a full-time Elvis tribute artist took off and now, he’s bringing his electrifying shows to Airlie Beach for the first time ever!

The weekend kicks off with the Aloha From Hawaii show, a breathtaking tribute to Elvis’s legendary 1973 concert broadcast live via satellite. The ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ concert is one of those iconic moments in Elvis’s career, and Damien captures that amazing concert’s magic and grandeur. With a stunning live band and spectacular visuals, Damian will perform some of Elvis’s most memorable hits, including Burning Love, Suspicious Minds, and Can't Help Falling in Love. St Catherine’s Catholic College proudly presents Meredith Wilson’s ‘The Music Man’. Written in 1957 and standing the test of time, this musical is sure to engage even the most dubious of musical audiences. The show is a six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy that has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

The Music Man follows fast-talking travelling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he promises to organise – this, despite the fact that he doesn't know one note from another. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the lovely librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.

Involving over 70 students as cast, crew and band, along with staff and community members of St Catherine’s, this musical has been a labour of love and a unique experience for all involved. Musical Director Betsy Atkinson has sung the praises of all involved and encourages as many people as possible to come along and enjoy the romance and music smorgasbord on offer in ‘The Music Man’.

“This has been such an awesome experience. The students have given this showt heir all and are so full of positive energy and talent. I have been humbled by the student and community involvement and can’t wait to show off the unique, gifted, hardworking individuals that I have the pleasure of teaching and working with” .

Our incredibly talented Music Director, Laura Robson, has been truly inspired by the students’ passion and commitment throughout the production.
