On Sunday, botanical artist Kate Bruner lead the Mackay Bushwalkers’ Club weekly outing to a remote area of Finch Hatton Gorge, known as Sparkle Falls. Twelve members hiked up, up and away onto the western branch of Finch Hatton Creek. A very steep and steady trail took them to an outstanding lookout and the first of many beautiful waterfalls. As the group continued, they were treated to a succession of picturesque cascades, numerous creek crossings, and plenty of boulder hopping through the rugged creek bed. On arrival at Sparkle Falls a few adventurous souls braved the chilly waters for a refreshing swim, while others relaxed in the sunshine and soaked up the tranquil surroundings. A long lunch was enjoyed, followed by slow walk back. It was an excellent day in the bush, filled with breath taking scenery, good company and a diverse group of friendly hikers who made the experience all the more enjoyable. NAIDOC Week celebrations across Mackay and the Whitsundays will receive a funding boost this year, with three local events sharing in State Government grants to mark the 50th anniversary of the annual celebration. More than $170,000 has been allocated to 59 community-led events across Queensland through the NAIDOC Grants Program, with funding designed to support activities that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, heritage and community connections. In the Mackay region, Mackay NAIDOC Incorporated received funding for its Street Parade and Family Fun Day in East Mackay, while the George Street Neighbourhood Centre Association secured support for its NAIDOC Week at The Neighbourhood Hub event. In the Whitsundays, Yooribaya Cultural Experiences Pty Ltd was awarded funding for its "Together by the Sea: NAIDOC 2026" celebration in Airlie Beach. National NAIDOC Week will be held from the 5th to the 12th of July under the theme "50 Years of Deadly", recognising half a century of celebrating and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture and achievements. Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Fiona Simpson said the grants helped communities deliver meaningful local celebrations. “As we celebrate Fifty Years of Deadly, our NAIDOC Grants not only pay respect to the strength of our Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but they also amplify the impact of community events,” Minister Simpson said. “It is inspiring to see communities from Brisbane to Bamaga committing to coming together during NAIDOC Week to recognise and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of our First Peoples. “The Government is a proud supporter of these community-led initiatives, which celebrate the rich 50-year history and traditions of the world’s oldest continuous living culture.” The grants program provides up to $2,500 for eligible events and activities, helping local organisers deliver community celebrations, cultural activities, yarning circles and family-friendly events during NAIDOC Week. This year's celebrations carry added significance as communities across Australia mark the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, reflecting on five decades of recognising and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Ohhh, I do love me a good bit of quirky Bri'ish (not a typo) theatre if I do say so myself. And Kucom's latest play - a delightful adaptation of a classic BBC sitcom - is a perfectly precise, profoundly polished and pleasing production, that would make the BBC proud! Waiting for God is full to the brim with quick wit, and witty quips, providing the audience with chuckles, guffaws and a rather loud "ha!" from me that may have been a snort - yes indeed, this play will have you grinning from ear to ear. If you know Director Bronwyn Grannall (and I do), you'll know she's got a delightful sense of humour, and this shines through in all facets - from the perfect casting to the set design and even the lighting (which I’m told is a brand new system at Kucom - very exciting!) Tessa King as Diana, shines with razor-sharp cleverness and surprising warmth, Sarah Menso as Jane brings a wonderfully awkward and delightful propriety to proceedings, and Hayden White as Harvey is the kind of character you'd love to give a gentle nudge off a cliff. Then there's David Goodwin as Geoffrey, whose characterisation and accent had me in absolute stitches, and Cheryl Obst, who stepped seamlessly between Sarah Chase, the Doctor, and stepped up as understudy for Andrew Obst as Rev Dennis Sparrow. Cheryl delivered each character with such distinct flair that you'd never know she was doing the work of three. Special mention to Jeany Elliott for her fab supporting characters! And, of course, praise to Geoff Stewart-McLean, who should really be on the stage (or TV) in London, as he always exceptionally embodies every character he plays. Waiting for God is sharp and funny, and carries some rather lovely themes about life, desire, and the very wonderful reminder that it is never, ever too late to find love - or not find it! Opening this Saturday, January 24, at Artspace Mackay is an immersive exhibition from one of Australia’s most influential and leading glass artists, Tom Moore.
‘Natural Oddity’ will showcase sophisticated and technically challenging glass hybrid characters which blur the lines between animal, plant and machine.
Mayor Greg Williamson said it’s an honour to have this exhibition in the region.
“We are thrilled and it’s a great privilege to have acclaimed artist Tom Moore and his ‘Natural Oddity’ exhibition in Mackay,” Mayor Williamson said.
“Tom’s work is a contemporary take on the ancient craft of glass blowing and has been showcased in many of Australia’s major state galleries,” he said.
Artspace Director Tracey Heathwood said the exhibition features video collaborations with Jonathan Nix and Nigel Koop, and photography by Grant Hancock.
“What sets this exhibition apart is these complex glass characters are combined with other media to bring the gallery to life – it explores the universe these creatures inhabit,” Ms Heathwood said.
“The exhibition is enlivened with dreamscape scenes, animations and soundscapes, creating an immersive experience full of whimsy to delight people of all ages,” she said.
Ms Heathwood said there will be a drawing competition, and a workshop with the artist.
“There’s interactive programs and a design competition across three age groups for the chance to have your creature brought to life in glass by Tom – a rare opportunity to see your imaginative creation transformed into reality!”
Arist Tom Moore said he’s very excited to see competition entries from all ages.
“Natural Oddity presents playful and sometimes unsettling reflections on nature and technology,” Mr Moore said.
“I’ve been drawing and creating funny characters most of my life – I am very excited to see other people’s weird and wonderful drawings and challenge myself for what I can create,” he said.
This exhibition will run alongside two others which will be open this week in Artspace’s Foundation and Foyer galleries:
Habitat by Colleen Heathwood James will be showcased in the Foundation Gallery. These works speak of the artist’s deep connection to the natural environments of Eungella and the Pioneer Valley, concerns about climate change and importance of protecting habitat.
Coastal Imprints by local printmaking group Printbank Mackay, in the Foyer Gallery, honours two decades of innovation, creative exploration and collaboration in Mackay’s art community. This group exhibition showcases two- dimensional and sculptural work of twelve members who have challenged the possibilities of their medium to produce vibrant interpretations of life on Mackay’s scenic coastline.
All three exhibitions remain on display until Sunday, 2nd April, 2026.

It’s not every day Mackay motorists expect to share the road with a horse, but last week, locals were treated to a sight straight out of a country comedy.
A Palomino horse was spotted on the loose, wearing a coat and making a stylish dash through the Gooseponds and surrounding streets.
One local motorist stepped into the role of unlikely hero, later taking to a community page to explain the unusual driving behaviour witnessed by many commuters.
“Apologies to everyone I just cut off, stopped in front of and drove radically around the Gooseponds and surrounding streets… I was helping some poor lady find her run away horse. We can confirm Makybe diva has been found!"
The post quickly trotted its way through local feeds, delivering laughs alongside reassurance that the well-travelled horse had been safely found.
For those who witnessed a coat-clad horse, a determined woman in riding boots, or some questionable early-morning manoeuvres, Mackay can rest easy knowing it was all in the name of a good cause, and a very memorable morning!

A celebration of Australian rock royalty is set to take over Airlie Beach, with two huge afternoons of live music featuring some of the country’s most loved anthems and familiar names.
Gold Chisel plus Power & The Passion – The Australian Midnight Oil Tribute Show will headline a massive weekend of entertainment, joined by special guests John Swan, better known as Swanee, and Alan Barnes.
Leading the charge is Gold Chisel, who will deliver a high-energy tribute to Cold Chisel with a setlist packed full of classics including Khe Sanh, When the War Is Over, Cheap Wine, Flame Trees, You Got Nothing I Want and Choir Girl, along with plenty more fan favourites. Gold Chisel are highly acclaimed and both Alan Barnes and Swanee, brothers of Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes have nothing but praise for the tribute band. Alan even knows Gold Chisel lead singer Andy well.
Sharing the stage will be Power & The Passion – The Australian Midnight Oil Tribute Show, bringing the unmistakable sound and political punch of Midnight Oil to life. Audiences can expect to hear iconic tracks such as Power and the Passion, US Forces, Dreamworld, King of the Mountain, Forgotten Years, Beds Are Burning and Blue Sky Mine.
Adding a unique family connection to the weekend, Swanee and Alan Barnes will also take to the stage to perform a mix of original material and classic hits. They will also join Gold Chisel during their set, teaming up on stage for a few crowd-pleasing songs.
Swanee will also be performing some hits from his newest album 'Believe'. On this album is the track titled 'Brother of Mine', a moving song featuring Swanee, Alan Barnes, and Jimmy Barnes. The brother-trio pour their heart and emotion into the song. It may be played at the event, you will have to be there to find out.
With two free shows scheduled, the event promises a relaxed, high-impact celebration of Australian rock across two afternoons.
The performances will take place on Saturday, the 24th of January, and Sunday, the 25th of January, from 2pm to 5.30pm, offering music lovers the chance to soak up some of the best Australian rock ever written in a live setting.
That's not all! On Australia Day the bands plus Swanee and Alan Barnes hit the stage again in a full day celebration, from midday to six.

Gabrielle McCarthy entered Season 7 of Love Island Australia as a Bombshell, and left the Villa as a nation-wide fan favourite, capturing the hearts of viewers with her bubbly personality and infectious energy.
After growing up in Mackay, 21-year-old Gabby moved to the sun-soaked shores of the Gold Coast to peruse her career as an influencer and content creator where she shares videos and photos of her life across multiple social media channels.
Gabby was flown out of the country to indulge in a European-Summer, Love Island Australia style, in August of 2025, after being cast in the show’s seventh consecutive season.
Season 7 of Love Island Australia was filmed in Mallorca, Spain and made its debut on the 27th of October 2025. Presented by Sophie Monk and comically narrated by Eoghan McDermott, the reality-cross-competition style television show involves several contestants who are searching for love over the course of the 29-episode season.
Contestants, also referred to as Islanders, must initially couple up with another Islander at the beginning of the season, however several re-couplings tend to take place as new contestants, known as Bombshells, enter the Villa. In the show’s grand finale, the winning couple, as determined by the votes of the public, typically take home $50,000 and of course, waves of exposure that often leads to brand deals and countless other opportunities.
Gabby entered the Villa as the season’s first Bombshell on day one and was the first Islander to quit the dating show solo, taking herself out of the $50,000 competition on episode 27 after spending 22 days in the Villa. It’s speculated that her split with her Love Island ex, Jotham Russell, heavily influenced her decision to leave after a surprise switch left Gabby single while Jotham re-coupled on day 15.
Throughout her time on the show, Gabby certainly left her mark, however, she was turning heads even before she entered the Love Island Villa and had over 141,000 followers on TikTok and approximately 86,000 on Instagram.
