A Bush Walk To Sparkle Falls

A Bush Walk To Sparkle Falls

On Sunday, botanical artist Kate Bruner lead the Mackay Bushwalkers’ Club weekly outing to a remote area of Finch Hatton Gorge, known as Sparkle Falls. Twelve members hiked up, up and away onto the western branch of Finch Hatton Creek. A very steep and steady trail took them to an outstanding lookout and the first of many beautiful waterfalls. As the group continued, they were treated to a succession of picturesque cascades, numerous creek crossings, and plenty of boulder hopping through the rugged creek bed. On arrival at Sparkle Falls a few adventurous souls braved the chilly waters for a refreshing swim, while others relaxed in the sunshine and soaked up the tranquil surroundings. A long lunch was enjoyed, followed by slow walk back. It was an excellent day in the bush, filled with breath taking scenery, good company and a diverse group of friendly hikers who made the experience all the more enjoyable. For more information about the club, phone 0429 363 929. Contributed with thanks to Coral and Carole.

Mackay & Whitsunday Events Share In NAIDOC Week Funding Boost

Mackay & Whitsunday Events Share In NAIDOC Week Funding Boost

NAIDOC Week celebrations across Mackay and the Whitsundays will receive a funding boost this year, with three local events sharing in State Government grants to mark the 50th anniversary of the annual celebration. More than $170,000 has been allocated to 59 community-led events across Queensland through the NAIDOC Grants Program, with funding designed to support activities that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, heritage and community connections. In the Mackay region, Mackay NAIDOC Incorporated received funding for its Street Parade and Family Fun Day in East Mackay, while the George Street Neighbourhood Centre Association secured support for its NAIDOC Week at The Neighbourhood Hub event. In the Whitsundays, Yooribaya Cultural Experiences Pty Ltd was awarded funding for its "Together by the Sea: NAIDOC 2026" celebration in Airlie Beach. National NAIDOC Week will be held from the 5th to the 12th of July under the theme "50 Years of Deadly", recognising half a century of celebrating and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture and achievements. Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Fiona Simpson said the grants helped communities deliver meaningful local celebrations. “As we celebrate Fifty Years of Deadly, our NAIDOC Grants not only pay respect to the strength of our Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but they also amplify the impact of community events,” Minister Simpson said. “It is inspiring to see communities from Brisbane to Bamaga committing to coming together during NAIDOC Week to recognise and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of our First Peoples. “The Government is a proud supporter of these community-led initiatives, which celebrate the rich 50-year history and traditions of the world’s oldest continuous living culture.” The grants program provides up to $2,500 for eligible events and activities, helping local organisers deliver community celebrations, cultural activities, yarning circles and family-friendly events during NAIDOC Week. This year's celebrations carry added significance as communities across Australia mark the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, reflecting on five decades of recognising and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Minister Simpson said the grants supported practical outcomes at a community level. “The Crisafulli Government remains committed to practical support to deliver tangible outcomes for our Aboriginal peoples and our Torres Strait Islander peoples,” she said. Local residents are encouraged to take part in NAIDOC Week events across Mackay and the Whitsundays when celebrations begin in July. WAITING FOR GOD BY MICHAEL AITKENS - KUCOM THEATRE REVIEW BY MIKI PONTING-BOYD

WAITING FOR GOD BY MICHAEL AITKENS - KUCOM THEATRE REVIEW BY MIKI PONTING-BOYD

Ohhh, I do love me a good bit of quirky Bri'ish (not a typo) theatre if I do say so myself. And Kucom's latest play - a delightful adaptation of a classic BBC sitcom - is a perfectly precise, profoundly polished and pleasing production, that would make the BBC proud! Waiting for God is full to the brim with quick wit, and witty quips, providing the audience with chuckles, guffaws and a rather loud "ha!" from me that may have been a snort - yes indeed, this play will have you grinning from ear to ear. If you know Director Bronwyn Grannall (and I do), you'll know she's got a delightful sense of humour, and this shines through in all facets - from the perfect casting to the set design and even the lighting (which I’m told is a brand new system at Kucom - very exciting!) Tessa King as Diana, shines with razor-sharp cleverness and surprising warmth, Sarah Menso as Jane brings a wonderfully awkward and delightful propriety to proceedings, and Hayden White as Harvey is the kind of character you'd love to give a gentle nudge off a cliff. Then there's David Goodwin as Geoffrey, whose characterisation and accent had me in absolute stitches, and Cheryl Obst, who stepped seamlessly between Sarah Chase, the Doctor, and stepped up as understudy for Andrew Obst as Rev Dennis Sparrow. Cheryl delivered each character with such distinct flair that you'd never know she was doing the work of three. Special mention to Jeany Elliott for her fab supporting characters! And, of course, praise to Geoff Stewart-McLean, who should really be on the stage (or TV) in London, as he always exceptionally embodies every character he plays. Waiting for God is sharp and funny, and carries some rather lovely themes about life, desire, and the very wonderful reminder that it is never, ever too late to find love - or not find it! Jolly good show Bronwyn and cast. 10/10 pearls clutched in absolute delight. Book your tickets now!!! Season dates: 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 June at 7.30pm, plus Sunday matinee 21 June at 2pm Bookings: https://events.humanitix.com/waiting-for-god

Local Voices Take Centre Stage In International Concert – Exchange For Peace

December 4, 2025

As Mackay prepares to host Exchange for Peace this December, local performers from the Mackay Choral Society are stepping into the spotlight for what promises to be one of the region’s most significant musical collaborations.

The concert, held at the MECC on 19 and 20 December, brings together an orchestra from Malaysia, local Mackay musicians and the Mackay Choral Society in a rare international partnership. With more than 100 performers on stage, the event marks a major cultural moment - and for the choir, it’s deeply personal.

For long-standing member Ken Brown, the performance carries both artistic and emotional significance.

Ken joined the Society in 2006 after being inspired by its Messiah concert the previous year.

“We’ve done so many great performances that inspire and provide great music for Mackay,” he said.

Exchange for Peace also gives Ken the chance to reconnect with Malaysian performers he met during a previous collaboration. But at the heart of it is Karl Jenkins’ powerful work, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace.

“The Armed Man is a wonderful work and I’m excited to bring it to Mackay,” Ken said.

“My favourite movement is the Benedictus. It’s moving and sombre, and perfectly reflects a desire for peace.”

For Bernie Cheng, President of the Mackay Choral Society, the project arrives at a milestone moment.

“I’ve been a member since 2020. I joined because I love the joy of singing in community, and I’ve stayed because of the friendships, the challenge of the repertoire, and the chance to be part of something bigger than myself,” Bernie said.

Bernie says performing The Armed Man at the MECC will be unforgettable.

“I’m looking forward to that moment when the audience collectively holds its breath, and we know all the late-night rehearsals were worth it.”

December 3, 2025

THE UNOFFICIAL TRIBUTE SHOW - TAYLOR: A Tribute to the Eras of Taylor Swift Music – is set to begin its Australian tour this January, taking in dates across QLD, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory.

The Proserpine Entertainment Centre is one of the lucky venues to watch the show live on Sunday February 1st.

“There’s a lot of buzz at the moment. We’re expecting audiences to be extra excited and engaged, and that’s great because it makes for really fun and memorable shows,” says producer Johnny Van Grinsven.

The production, which debuted just this year has already toured to South Africa, Canada and New Zealand with the Australian tour to kick start the new year.

The show is lead by New Zealand singer-songwriter and recording artist Josette. She considers herself a huge swiftie and she bears resemblance too. Touted as a ‘joyous and effervescent’ concert experience where fans are encouraged to dance and sing along, the show features over 20 exquisite renditions of Taylor’s biggest hits from every era of her career, including Shake It Off, Anti-Hero, Cruel Summer, You Belong With Me, Love Story, I Knew You Were Trouble, Blank Space, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Bad Blood, Our Song, Lover and more.

City Centre Brimming With Festive Cheer In December

November 27, 2025

The City Centre might be a long way from the North Pole, but this year it will be brimming with just as much Christmas magic.

From carols to markets, dazzling projections to a moonlight movie, the City Heart Christmas celebrations on Friday, December 5 promise an unforgettable night for all ages.

From 4pm to 9pm, Wood Street Park and surrounding areas will be transformed into a hub of free family fun.

Highlights include a Moonlight Family Movie, roaming Christmas carollers, facepainting and glitter tattoos, late-night Christmas shopping and the exciting launch of Bright Lights Building Projections, Santa’s Secret Present Search and the City Heart Magical Christmas Window Competition.

The Riverside Christmas Market and Friday Flow at Bluewater Quay will add to the festive atmosphere.

At 6.30pm, families can settle in under the stars for a special outdoor screening of the much-loved Christmas classic ELF.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early, reserve their spot in the park from 5.30pm and enjoy the City Heart festivities before the movie begins. Tickets are free and available via Eventbrite.

The Bright Lights Christmas Project will see beautiful Christmas projections light up the Masonic Hall, Australian Hotel and Wood St near Moss on Wood until December 24.

Santa’s Secret Present Search will also kick off on December 5 and run to December 16.

This exciting Christmas-inspired City Centre treasure hunt will feature a dozen cryptic clues that reveal the locations of shops with Christmas trinkets to give away.  There’s also the chance to win one of three City Heart business vouchers by taking a photo in the big Santa Frame on Wood Street.

There is also the Magical Christmas Window Competition running until December 16.

About 30 City Centre businesses have entered the competition and will be transforming their window displays into festive exhibitions.

Co-chair of council’s Economic Development and Growth Strategic Advisory Committee (EDGSAC), Cr Belinda Hassan said the celebrations were a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together.

“City Heart Christmas is about creating magical moments for families and showcasing the vibrancy of our city,” Cr Hassan said.

“From carols to markets, projections to movies, there’s something for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

EDGSAC Co-chair Cr Nathenea MacRae said council’s City Centre and Waterfront team had gone above and beyond this year to activate the City Centre over Christmas.

“Not only have we expanded our outlay of Christmas decorations and sponsored the amazing YarnBomb Mackay group to create a signature display at the Victoria/Wood Street roundabout, but the team have also organised some amazing activations to bring people into the City Centre to enjoy some festive fun,” Cr MacRae said.

“This will be a great night and a fantastic way to support our local traders and businesses owners,” she said. “I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

The City Heart Christmas program promises to deliver festive fun, entertainment and a chance to make lasting memories with loved ones.

Country Jam Festival Hits Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is set for a country music takeover from December 5–7 as the Jack Daniel’s Country Jam Festival returns to the Airlie Beach Hotel. Free entry and three days of live entertainment make it one of the biggest country weekends of the year.

The festival kicks off Friday night with a high-voltage performance from Ally Friendship, fresh from her stint on The Voice, where she chose team Richard Marx. Her performance on The Voice gained a standing ovation and displayed her powerful vocals to a national audience. Known for her powerhouse vocals and dynamic stage presence, Ally will deliver a mix of rock and country classics from Eagles to Chris Stapleton and Bon Jovi in the Sports Bar from 7–10pm. Her performances are a rare treat in a live festival setting, blending evening show energy with a sports bar atmosphere that’s perfect for fans wanting an up-close, intimate experience.

Saturday afternoon, the spotlight moves to the Bistro stage for the Australian Shania Twain tribute show, Let’s Go Girls!. Ally transforms into the ultimate Country Queen, belting out hits like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” with authenticity and flair.

As the sun sets, the party atmosphere ramps up with the Trucker Hat Appreciation Society Tailgate Party in the Sports Bar from 7–10pm. The Tailgate is a festival highlight, with boots, buckles, and honky-tonk energy as the band covers country hits from Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson to Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen. This lively evening show pairs perfectly with the festival’s daytime tribute performances, giving fans a full spectrum of country fun in one venue. It's a combination of all of the best in modern country music and all for free too.

Sunday afternoon keeps the energy rolling with the Luke Combs Hurricane tribute in the Bistro from 2–5:30pm. Fans can sing along to all the hits, capping off a weekend packed with country spirit.

For those looking to add some two-step to the weekend, Tropical Boots is offering free line dancing lessons in the Sports Bar Saturday and Sunday which is perfect for getting your boots festival-ready.

With live music day and night, ice-cold Jack Daniel’s, and a mix of tribute shows and tailgate energy, the Jack Daniel’s Country Jam Festival promises a weekend of unforgettable country fun for fans of all ages.
