Read the full storyBowen has been very busy in the school holidays with the Visitor Information Centre reporting a bumper start to the two-week break.
On Monday alone, the staff and volunteers welcomed more than 350 people to the centre.
Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy said a lot of people were staying in Bowen but there were also a lot of day-trippers from Airlie Beach.
“The Big Mango is always an attraction during the school holidays,” she said.
“There has also been a lot of families traveling north to go home after taking part in the Paul Bowman under 9’s rugby league carnival in Proserpine on the weekend.
“It’s great to see so many people visiting our hidden gem at the top of the Whitsundays with eight secluded beaches, great bushwalks, a free water park for the kids, an historic jetty and the oldest cinema in Queensland.
“We pride ourselves on our country hospitality, so you won’t be disappointed if you decide to make a trip to Bowen in the holidays.
“And, of course, we have a great range of local produce and Bowen merchandise at the Visitor Information Centre, as well as delicious mango sorbet on offer.”
There are so many things to do in Bowen, it is not just a place to pass through for lunch.
It is definitely worth considering spending more time in Bowen these school holidays.

Last year’s event saw an impressive 50 cars and 30 bikes on display at Proserpine Showgrounds and this year should be even bigger.
Organised by the Whitsunday Old Iron Restorers Club, the event is run by volunteers and member Lyn Burke said there will be numerous things to do on the day.
“The tractor pull is going to be entertaining and there's free events for the children to keep them occupied,” said Lyn.
“The Pioneer Valley Machinery Preservations Society Rally are brining all their stationary engines, really old engines that will be running and going, I think it'll be a vehicle-lovers paradise, to be truthful!”
One of the engines on display is from 1908, and it still runs today!
There will also be face painting, a train ride and a petting zoo to keep all the kids entertained.
Experienced judges will be present and awards will be given to overall car and bike winners.
There will also be an opportunity to vote in the people’s choice category.

The Mackay & District Orchid Society has been in full bloom over the past few months, hosting successful events and supporting the local community. In July, their Winter Orchid Show at the Mackay & District Senior Citizens' Centre drew a vibrant crowd, with a stunning display of orchids.
The Society also teamed up with the Pioneer River Orchid & Plant Association to donate funds to YIRS, helping homeless youth in Mackay. They followed this up with a charming Father’s Day plant display at Bunnings.
On September 7th, new members gathered at Orchids Mackay for an informative workshop on growing and caring for orchids, complete with a sausage sizzle and sweets for a laid-back finish. The following weekend, the club attended the Orchid Extravaganza in Queens Park, offering plant accessories and a raffle.
Looking ahead, the big Spring Orchid Show is set for October 12th and 13th at the Senior Citizens’ Centre. For just $2 admission, visitors can enjoy a spectacular orchid display, potting demonstrations, and grab a tea or coffee with homemade treats.
The next general meeting is on September 19th, and all orchid enthusiasts are welcome to attend.

Last month, Crossroad Arts presented Unlock the City, a major production as part of the Mackay Festival of Arts.
Over the course of three nights in August, performers from Crossroad Arts offered audiences a chance to explore Mackay from a new perspective, revealing both familiar and unfamiliar aspects of the city through their unique storytelling. Supported by Gold Project Sponsor BOLD Architecture and 2024 Artistic Program Sponsor Daly Bay, the production stood out as a fringe event in the festival.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the show enjoyed a sold-out season, bringing to light the city’s hidden stories and featuring a diverse array of artists, including Tchundal Malar Aboriginal Dance Group, Crossroad Arts core performers, Artist in Residence and Ambassadors Charlee Presland, Seb Cali, Tony Moore, Miki Ponting Boyd, Evan Daly and James Hunter.
Crossroad Arts continues to promote Mackay as an inclusive destination, sparking discussions and uncovering unique regional tales.
As Mr. Speaker Josh noted during the show, “Thank you very much Mackay! See you next year for our next show in 2025!”

Have you ever pulled a prank on a mate that got them on national television?
Well, that has happened to us on Star Breakfast.
Months ago, I thought it would be hilarious to register Rach as a contestant on Australian Idol.
The idea was simple; tell her she was registered, get her to sing in a public cafe, laugh laugh laugh, dust our hands clean of that.
Then things got interesting.
Out of nowhere, an email hit my inbox, AUSTRALIAN IDOL CASTING. I could not believe my eyes, how had this happened?
Surely they heard her sing? Right?!
Damien Agius from Idol season 1 bestowed his wisdom on Rach before her Zoom audition, she was prepped and ready.
She piped out ‘Let it go’ from Frozen, the producers were laughing but seemed happy with her efforts. We all got a laugh out of it and that's as far as it goes. Right?
Well, wrong again!
October 9th in Sydney, Rach WILL be performing in front of the Australian Idol judges!
Follow the journey 6-9am weekdays on Star Mackay and the Whitsundays, if you've missed anything check out the videos on our socials @starmackay on Instagram and ‘Star 101.9 Mackay’ on Facebook.

The Whitsundays Songwriters Festival has just released an exciting name for its upcoming event announcing this week that Wendy Matthews will inspire festival goers this year.
Due to take place from 10-15 October, the Whitsundays Songwriters Festival is now in its third year and is quickly becoming a highlight on the annual event calendar.
Offering a professional Songwriter Residential Retreat (10-15 October), a one-day workshop for emerging songwriters on Saturday 12 October, and an evening performance by the Professional Faculty at Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach on Saturday 12 October from 6pm, the festival is set to include another action-packed itinerary.
Festival co-founders Karen Jacobsen and Francesca de Valence say: “We were energised by the feedback from our last festival, with memories of Toni Childs wowing the audience at our Concert and Conversation event and are over the moon to be able to continue this life-changing arts program in regional North Queensland, and to fulfill our mission to develop the next generation of songwriters.”
Previous participant 20-year-old Mackay-based singer-songwriter Tiffany Grace has attended every one of the Festival’s emerging songwriter workshops.
She says, “Being in a regional area, it’s extremely hard to get this experience at such a high level.”
Participant Pe Le, wrote his very first song ever at the 2023 workshop with the support of Linda Bull of Vika and Linda, and went on to continue writing 10 songs in the months that followed, demonstrating the transformative power of the festival's mentorship and guidance.

Prepare to be transported on a satirical hip-hop journey with The Versace Boys, who will be electrifying Airlie Beach with their performance at KC’s Bar and Grill this weekend.
Anticipate trumpets, stylish designer outfits, and witty, yet clever songs that are sure to entertain.
Musical duo Will Henderson and Alex Johnson met in Berlin in 2019 at a Sticky Fingers concert. Their chance meeting led to a creative partnership, but COVID-19 cut their European journey short, prompting them to continue their music elsewhere.
The band features a core line-up of two musicians, but the number of performers can expand to seven for various gigs.
The band is excited to come to Airlie Beach, and Will recounted the last time that they came:
“We came to Airlie once before, and it was supposed to be a 300-person gig, and it turned out to be 1200 and it was amazing!”
The Versace Boys love coming to play for regional crowds, and tailor their raps to tell funny stories about the location, and audience members can expect to hear some funny stories about Airlie Beach:
“Regional crowds are beautiful.”
“We have a lot more fun than most other bands and we are a lot less serious, and we make every single show idiosyncratic to the location.”
The Versace Boys are heading to Airlie Beach! Catch their performance at KC’s Bar and Grill this weekend. If you can’t make it, don’t worry—they’ll also be rocking Mushroom Valley. Plus, stay tuned to their social media for weekly releases of fresh new tunes!

Geed Up are back in Airlie Beach, and ready to give a fantastic performance at the Airlie Beach Hotel.
The Pub is becoming one of Geed UP's regular stomping grounds – and they’re becoming one of the region’s all-time favourite shows.
While the band have played larger venues in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, they maintain that the Airlie Beach Hotel remains a place that inspires them and their music the most.
Geed Up is a vibrant ensemble of six diverse talents, each bringing their own flair to the stage. From sultry three-part harmonies and dynamic Hip-Hop choreography, including breakdancing and acrobatics, to elements of DJ’ing, rapping, and dazzling light shows, they craft an unparalleled experience.
The International-level performers, known for their polished three-piece harmonies, blending their unique vocal styles into a fusion of soul, funk, edge, and class, will have the audience speechless all afternoon.
The band is extremely excited to return to The Airlie Beach Hotel, and in their free time, they’ll be sticking to their usual routine:
‘’Every time we go up, we go to Airlie Fitness, the owner there, he lets us train, because fitness is a big part of our group.”
“Our performances are high energy, including a lot of break dancing and we also have other skilled dancers in our crew, so we've got to keep on top of our fitness, so we go there,” band member Khan Ropati stated.
“We prefer those smaller, more intimate venues, and smaller crowds because you get to meet people and know them on a personal level.”
“They keep coming back to watch us and we create relationships and friendships with them.”
GEED UP’s sole mission is to make you laugh and dance with the biggest hits from across the ages. This high-energy show brings its unique magic to life, creating an unforgettable experience for all ages—one you can only fully appreciate in person.
In addition to their Airlie Beach venture, the band says one of their highlights of the year has been their partnership with Beyond Blue to support mental health awareness. They've been hitting the streets with performances in major cities to raise awareness and funds for the important cause.
If you are around Airlie Beach, head on down and watch the fantastic Geed Up to see one of their epic 3 Performances, that are comically dubbed ‘The best ‘worst’s show ever.” The band also have a special “after dark” event Friday night, which is where khan states “all the naughty stuff happens.”
