Feel The Burn, Fuel The Cure At The 2024 Harpertastic 1km Travelling Burpees Challenge

August 1, 2024

Get ready to sweat, smile, and make a difference at the Harpertastic 1km Travelling Burpees Challenge.

Returning for its fourth year, this event is set to make an even greater impact in 2024.

This annual event, dedicated to raising funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute, promises to be a major highlight, building on the momentum of last year’s fundraising success.

At just two years old, Harper Flynn was diagnosed with two rare gene mutations called CACNA1E and HK1, both of which are neurological based conditions. The young girl is now six-years-old, however, heavily relies on extensive care from family members and supporters in all aspects of her daily life.

Studies show that 1 in 20 children will be diagnosed with a genetic disorder or cancer, and each $50 raised funds one hour of crucial research.

Despite Harpers circumstances, relatives say her illness doesn’t stop her from doing the things she loves.

“She doesn’t really let her disability get in the way of what she wants to do every day,” said Harper’s grandmother Christine Joy.

By donating to the 'Jeans for Genes' initiative through the Harpertastic 1km Travelling Burpees Challenge, you can help support young children in their fight whilst contributing to the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, the event will commence from 7.30am and will be located on the lawn in front of the Mackay Regional Council building.

To kickstart the morning, the children’s ‘Grayson’s Race for Research’ will be held, which is suitable for participants who are 12-year-olds and under.

As the children’s race concludes, the Harpertastic 1km Travel Burpees challenge will begin.

General Admission is $20 per adult and $10 for 12 years and younger.

Register online or via the QR code and get ready to sweat up a storm to raise funds for Children’s Medical Research. All funds raised go directly to Jeans for Genes!

WHAT: Harpertastic 1km of Travel Burpees 2024

The Mackay Show Association proudly presents the launch of this highly anticipated non-acquisitive National Art Prize and exhibition, set to showcase the finest in art and culture from 2 August to 5 August 2024. Celebrating its eighteenth year, the event promises an impressive array of artistic excellence.
In exciting news for 2024, the event will welcome the esteemed Susi Muddiman OAM as the guest judge. Muddiman, the Director of Gallery & Visual Arts at HOTA, Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast, brings over 25 years of experience in the visual arts sector. Having commenced her role at HOTA in November 2023, she previously served as the long-service Director at the award-winning Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre. Her career is marked by numerous contributions to visual arts activities, including curating exhibitions and serving on various committees and judging panels. Awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2015 for her service to the galleries and museums of NSW, Muddiman's involvement is a significant honour for the Mackay arts community.
This year's Art on Show Awards aims to highlight the wealth of diverse local artistic talent and attract high-standard interstate works. With five entry sections, including a local artist prize and the major $3,000 Woollam Art on Show Award, the total prize purse has increased to $12,000. The People’s Choice Award, judged by event patrons, will be announced post-event.
Since its inception in June 2006, Art on Show has attracted a combined 8,000 competition entries. The event continues to receive substantial support from local artists and increasing interest from interstate, with entries from as far as Tasmania and Cairns. Additionally, the event focuses on unearthing new talent among emerging high school senior art students, resulting in a record number of entries and works on exhibit.

Busta Move! At The Airlie Beach Hotel

July 25, 2024

Nicky Bomba and Bustamento are returning to the Airlie Beach Hotel next Saturday for an ultimate island inspired party.
Lead singer-songwriter Nicky Bomba, described the band as “classic early mento and calypso music, which was the forerunner to all Ska and reggae”
“It's very danceable, tropical vibes with lots of sunshine and joy.”
The band has been going for nearly 20 years, and was formed after seeing a classic mentos show in Germany:
“We thought, ‘we could do this’, because it was kind of a similar thing to what we already did.”
Nicky also explained the reasoning behind the band's name:
“The reason why we named the band Bustamento is because, Jamaica's first prime minister was called Sir Alexander Bustamante and Prince Buster, which is one of our favorite artists was named after him and in Malta, where I was born, Bustamente is a boat.”
After one release and a tour around the world, the band added some new flavours they’d encountered on their travels to their musical mix for a second recording. To a reggae and steel pan calypso base, they incorporated elements of other sounds: Motown, pop, New Orleans boogie, tons of groove.
When asked what his favourite song from the band was Nicky replied:
“It's like saying what is my favourite child, however, one of the songs that works well and has done well for us is Coconut Woman.”
Nicky and the band are excited to escape the cold and snowy Victoria alpine region and head to the sunny Whitsundays and Nicky said that he loves visiting Airlie Beach:
“It's always a great vibe, and the people are always up for a dance and, music really kind of connects up there, so we've got lots of friends up there too. So, it's just nice to connect and play our music.”
Nicky mentioned how the audience can expect their own “special little party,” where they can dance and connect with the band and attendees should get ready for an interactive performance.
If Bustamento coming to town isnt enough... Nicky Bomba and the band are also doing their “One Love” Bob Marley Tribute performance on the Sunday.
Nicky explained how “the instrumentation of many of the Marley tunes are quite different and intricate,” so the musicians in the band are “world-class.”
The performance will consist mainly of Bob Marley tunes, Nicky mentioned how he had done a fair amount of research on Marley’s life trajectory and the performance will encompass a historical journey through the reggae legend’s life.
Nicky and the band, being full-time musicians have a few bands Nicky said his highlights have been playing for different festivals, doing a national tour, receiving awards and their work receiving overseas recognition in the UK.
Nicky says to look up Bustamento and the award-winning Melbourne Ska orchestra (which they also perform in) on Spotify and looks forward to both their performances in Airlie Beach:
“If you’re coming to the event, come and say hello and, and shake a leg.”

"The Whitsunday Voices Festival has been going for 20 years now, offering a unique opportunity for regional schools to come together,” Ms Wilkins said.

“It’s a good opportunity for students to ask questions especially in literacy and for getting into careers of creative writing because they get to see how the publishing process works which is not really something you get to hear of in everyday life.”

School captain, Joshua Jarvis also emphasised how the festival transcends academic boundaries having attended both as a student and now as a volunteer.

“It’s been really great to interact with not only the authors but with the other students from other schools who have come here and it’s just really great to hang out, with music and food trucks all around, and just really absorb the whole festival in,” he shared.

Andrew Wheaton, Principal of Whitsunday Anglican School, said how the festival's significance is bridging the gap between rural and urban educational experiences.

“We’re incredibly fortunate and privileged to have some of Australia’s leading authors, illustrators and performers,” Mr Wheaton said.

“This event is very important because it reaches out to rural and regional students to give them the opportunity to attend a world class literature festival akin to what the city can experience, and that’s the real value of this.

“They can really enjoy the love of reading and all things literature and that is the real strength of what this festival is able to provide,” he explained.

Australian icon Kate Ceberano, who graced the festival with her presence, marvelled at its impact on Mackay and says, “The future is in the story tellers.”

“Something that I love to tell kids is, don’t get stuck on being someone who you were, it’s okay to use your imagination and outdream that box you’re in.

“If it’s not working for you, just change, know that you have the freedom to change and there isn’t anybody else like you on the planet so it’s up to your imagination to shape how you want to be seen,” she remarked

Nick Earls, a seasoned author with over three decades of literary contribution, reflected on the festival's evolution since its inception. Nick attended the first ever Whitsunday Voices Literature Festival two decades ago and says he still enjoys coming to the festival to engage with students and share his stories.

Festival Manager, Tracey Gurdler, emphasised the unique opportunity the festival provides for regional communities.

"Events like Whitsunday Voices are often associated with big cities but it’s really nice that our region gets to experience these authors and for the students to be inspired by them.”

The festival's 20th year was marked by lively performances, insightful author talks and interactive workshops, all designed to ignite passion for literature and creative arts among the region's students.
