Mackay is renowned for its vibrant seafood, tropical produce, public art, jazz scene, and festivals like the Mackay Festival of Arts and Jazz in the Park—and the culinary scene just got even more exciting.

Eariler this week, the region’s culinary landscape was majorly elevated as Adrian and Jessica launched Gypsy Burger in Mackay, bringing their famous gourmet burgers to a Queensland foodie capital.

Jess and Adrian were stoked to spill the beans for their latest gig following their grand opening last Thursday on the 4th of July located at the family business, in the car park of Sinclair Meats.

Co-owner Adrian added that "Our uniqueness lies in our commitment to quality.

“Few, if any, burger joints raise their own beef.

“We meticulously select top-notch ingredients, from local produce to Martin's potato buns and we’re so excited to be launching in Mackay."

Gypsy Burger is all about serving up that signature Gypsy vibe, with a special focus on mouth-watering food.

Jess and Adrian are dead set on spreading their love for top-notch, drool-worthy grub to a whole new QLD crowd, and expanding to Mackay shows just how serious they are.

With their track record of culinary brilliance and a commitment to keeping customers grinning, they're set to shake things up big time in the local dining scene.

A ‘Hole’ Lot Of Fun Featuring: You Are A Doughnut

July 4, 2024

From the creators of “The Alphabet of Awesome Science” comes a brand-new multi-award-winning family show, You Are a Doughnut.

Audiences will join biology teachers Oesoph A. Gus and Dewey Dean as they embark upon an utterly brilliant all singing, all-dancing (and all-clowning!) exploration of every twisting tube and remarkable organ — with sketches, songs and sensational science.

Along the way there will be a frenzy of enzyme powered ping pong balls, a sing along with a rainbow collection of poop puppets, and weirdest poetry performance they have ever seen.

“You Are a Doughnut” is a ‘riot of fun’ (The Clothesline) and a ‘sure winner for the whole family’ (Glam Adelaide) — presented by the ‘masters of educational entertainment’ (Play & Go).

It’s a little bit gross — and a ‘hole’ lotta fun, you might even learn something!

Three performances will take place at NewLife Church on 11 & 12 July. With tickets at $18.50, it’s recommended for parents to book their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Four Nights Of Genre-Bending Music And Street Eats

July 5, 2024

Four bands, four genres, delectable street cuisine, craft brews and pop-up activations will create an electric atmosphere at the Whitsunday Wealth Festival Hub.
Over four nights, from Thursday, July 11, to Sunday, July 14, the Bluewater Quay will echo with rock, rhythm and blues; folk and old-time mountain music; swing and rockabilly; and a Latin dance fiesta.
Deputy Mayor Belinda Hassan said it was great to see the popular feature of the Mackay Festival of Arts back at the Bluewater Quay.
“The Whitsunday Wealth Festival Hub is a core Festival of Arts event that has always been about providing free entertainment, street food and plenty of room for people to gather and enjoy the atmosphere,” Cr Hassan said.
“This year the Festivals Team have done something special in that each night will have a different genre and a bit of a different theme,” she said.
“For example, on Friday night there’s a bit of a ‘hillbilly’ theme and festivalgoers can take turns on a free mechanical bucking bull.
“The team have also organised for the popular Riverside Mega Markets to be at the quay on Thursday and Friday nights and they will be set up in part of the Brisbane Street carpark.”
The line-up for the four nights is an exciting mix of high-energy genres and influences.
On Thursday, from 5.30pm to late, there will be “rockin' rhythm and blues” with The Wild Sky.
The Wild Sky is the perfect three-piece rock 'n' roll outfit to kick off the hub experience.
Expect sophisticated melodies, a seamless blend of rhythm, blues and a dose of funk.
On Friday, from 5.30pm to late, the Quay will come alive with folk and old-time mountain music thanks to the Hillbilly Goats.
Featuring banjo, bones, double bass, fiddle, tap-dancing, three-part harmonies and more, the Hillbilly Goats aren’t just a band – they’re a show!
Then, on Saturday, from 4pm until late, it’s all about the swing and rockabilly with Joshy J and the Ricochets.
Put on your best dancing shoes, grease up that hair and get ready to boogie to the tunes of yesteryear!
Finally, on Sunday, from 4pm to late, it will be a festival fiesta with Viva and band.
Prepare for a sensational dance fiesta as the Bluewater Quay is transformed into a vibrant paradise with a Latin flavour!
Bands will play from 6pm to 9.15pm on weekdays and 5pm to 8.15pm on the weekend.
Street food will vary nightly between the weekdays and weekend, but will include burgers and fried chicken, kebabs, crepes, ribs and ice cream.

A Mass Of Thanksgiving

June 27, 2024

Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Rockhampton, Miss Leesa Jeffcoat AM was farewelled by the Diocese at a Mass of Thanksgiving at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Rockhampton followed by a Reception at Rockhampton Leagues Club as she concludes her time as Director after more than two decades in the role.

Catholic Education sector leaders and representatives from across Queensland and Australia were in attendance, together with many Priests and Religious, government representatives, Catholic School Principals, Catholic Education Directors and Leaders.

Hundreds of students and staff filled St Joseph’s Cathedral for the Mass, and many more from Catholic schools across the Diocese in centres from Mackay to Bundaberg and west to Longreach tuned in via livestream.

Miss Jeffcoat said she had been humbled to have served as Diocesan Director of Catholic Education for the past 23 years, but she knew this was the right time for a new Director to lead the ministry of Catholic Education into an exciting future.

“I am sad to be ending a time in my professional life that has given me great personal and professional satisfaction, but I leave feeling truly blessed for the opportunities afforded to me through my lifelong association with Catholic Education as a student, teacher and leader,” Miss Jeffcoat said.

Miss Jeffcoat thanked current Diocese of Rockhampton Bishop, Michael McCarthy and before that Bishop Emeritus Brian Heenan for their wise and pastoral leadership of the Diocese.

“I offer both Bishop Michael McCarthy and Bishop Emeritus Brian Heenan my heartfelt appreciation for their prayerful support, their encouragement, their guidance and above all their loving care,” Miss Jeffcoat said.

Bishop Michael expressed deep appreciation for Miss Jeffcoat’s unwavering support of the Diocese, for the Church and all Catholic Education staff.

“Within the 10 kindergartens, 39 schools and colleges under her direction, Leesa has done an extraordinary job of ensuring that our young people receive the very best in Catholic education and are supported by excellent teachers and staff on their faith journey,” Bishop Michael said.

“Leesa has generously given of herself as Director and has assisted me in so many ways, especially settling me into the diocese and then being a very wise colleague,” he said.

Miss Jeffcoat said she wished to sincerely thank her professional colleagues, both past and present, for the trust they had placed in her to serve as Director over the past 23 years.

“I thank our wonderful teachers for their loyalty and support, and I am also very grateful to the Priests, Religious, Principals and leaders, parents, students, teachers, support staff and all in our Catholic Education family for their prayers, their encouragement, and their care of me” Miss Jeffcoat said.

Miss Jeffcoat officially concludes her time at the end of 2024 following a period of leave during Semester 2 with newly appointed Director, Michael McCusker commencing in role in July.

Whitsunday’s Young Stars Battle It Out

June 27, 2024

North Queensland Battle of the Young Bands kicked off for the first-time last Sunday afternoon. The young talent performed a variety of fantastic songs to battle it out for the first prize; a whopping $1000 and the opportunity to perform a gig at Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill.
The winners of the day were Gleezus, who were also the winners from the last Whitsundays Got Talent. Organiser and coordinator Paula Hovey, mentioned how great the talent was at the weekend and that the first place was a “close call”, with old time favourite Category 5 as runners up, and the fantastic MyEnvy coming third.
Prizes were also given to second and third place, with second place getting $500 and third place, $100 along with a Whitsundays Got Talent engraved water bottle. All other non-placed musicians were given a voucher for Bridget Peel Fine Art, to have their own signature piece made.
The Battle of the Young Bands also hosted a raffle. The raffle winner was Bec Murlon, who went home with a $200 in-house voucher and a ticket to the 3-day Airlie Beach Festival of Music.
A total of seven bands performed, and Paula exclaimed how all the talent was “amazing,” and even included five bands from Music Evolution productions. Paula re-emphasised how the competition was “really hard to judge”.
Paula continued, saying that after the success of the first show, she expects next year to be even “bigger and better”, and encourages all to participate.
Other bands who performed in the battle were, The Microns, The Krusaders, THE TROUBLE MAKERS, Amnesya and Category 5.
The battle will run annually and is open to all young people aged 5-21 years.

Award Winning Whitsundays Author Joins Writers Festival Line-Up

June 27, 2024

The Whitsundays Writers Festival has an exciting new update to their speaker line-up with award winning Whitsundays author and investigative journalist Dr Lindsay Simpson announced to speak at the much-anticipated event.
Lindsay is the author and co-author of eleven books including bestselling Brothers in Arms, co-authored with Sandra Harvey and the subject of the Netflix television mini-series Bikie Wars.
She also authored historical fiction novel The Curer of Souls which was shortlisted for the Colin Roderick Prize in 2007. In the same year she won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Australian Crime Writers Association with Sandra.
Lindsay’s 2014 book, Where is Daniel? Written with his parent’s Bruce and Denise Morcombe, investigated the disappearance of their son Daniel and the subsequent police investigation.
Her latest book, following its Dirty Footsteps: Adani is a memoir on climate change which won a Queensland Premier Literary Award in 2019.
Festival President Karen Jacobsen has expressed her excitement at the new line-up addition. “We are thrilled to have Lindsay join this year’s program. Her body of work is profound. Her meticulous research and passionate telling of important stories often present the reader with uncomfortable and problematic aspects of Queensland and Australian stories that need to be told.”
In addition to her book writing, Lindsay was also an investigative journalist for The Sydney Morning Herald from 1983-95 and spent 13 years as an academic, where she was the Inaugural Head of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Tasmania. She also founded the Bachelor of Multimedia Journalism degree at James Cook University in 2010.
Lindsay now writes full time while living in the Whitsundays with her husband Grant. The pair also have their own tourism business where they run two sailing boats, Providence V and MiLady.
“We look forward to Lindsay’s significant contribution to the festival, sharing insights on responsible and respectful truth telling,’ Karen Jacobsen added.
Lindsay joins authors Shankari Chandran, Garry Disher, Sally Hepworth, Kirsty Manning, Christos Tsiolkas, Anne Buist, Graeme Simsion, Karina Kilmore, Melissa Ashley, Jack Roney, Joy Damousi, and Nick Earls for this year’s program.

Feel The Vibe With Soulcutz At Airlie Beach Hotel

June 27, 2024

“Barber by day / singer by night”

This is how Soulcutz, performer and band manager, Benson, describes himself.

Operating as a barber under the same title, Benson loves his 50/50 lifestyle, weekdays cutting hair and weekends performing in front of crowds on stage.

You may remember Soulcutz from the X Factor in 2014, where they reached the top 12.

Since then, the A-list musicians have been regular performers at Eat Street Northshore in Brisbane and they are now excited to be sharing their unique vibe at The Pub, Airlie Beach Hotel.

Bringing entertainment for the young and the young at heart with a repertoire spanning four decades, Soulcutz have the ability to sound like both Shaggy and The Bee Gees!

They also proudly exhibit outstanding dance moves that mimic Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Elvis Presley to name a few.

Impersonation is one part of their show that makes them stand out amongst other bands and along with their jokes and crowd interactions, it’ll make for an entertaining evening you’ll always remember.

As an audience member you will feel part of the act said Benson.

“Our audiences are equal, they are part of us,” added Benson.

“You feel part of the group, you’re not treated inferior, our audiences are part of the show and it’s lots of fun.”

This is their first-time visiting Airlie Beach, and they cannot wait to meet the crowd and feed off their energy for a great evening.

“I love performing, seeing smiles on people’s faces, making people happy and feeding off vibes - it’s a great feeling.”

Performing a mix of Motown, soul, R & B, rock, country, reggae and old much-loved classics, Soulcutz provide a sing-along experience for all music lovers.

Benson has one thing to say to us, “Be there guys, be there!”

The Goats Are Coming To Town

June 27, 2024

For one night only at the Reef Gateway Hotel, Australian festival favourites The Hillbilly Goats are coming back to town.

Renowned for their big harmonies, intricate fiddle melodies and fast harmonica, these incredible musicians have been carving out their own niche at big festivals nationwide.

They are award winning specialists in Mountain Music, with their musical twist on traditional songs.

Their mission is to strip back the layers of modern music and transport you on a journey that began centuries ago when the immigrants first settled in the Appalachian Mountains of America.

The band initially covered songs from the Bluegrass genre but with research found that the genre’s history went back for hundreds of years.

“The history then started to intrigue us because there's hundreds of years of history up in Appalachia,” said The Hillbilly Goats performer Mahney.

“The Scots, Irish and then the Africans brought their banjos into the mountains.

“The rhythms, instruments and cultures create the story that we're passionate about.”

Mahney said the band are excited to come back to the Whitsundays and urges you to “Kick Yer Shoes off, Put Yer Hoe Down & Hang on to Yer Britches!”

At Reef Gateway Hotel expect to hear some of their original songs, ‘Cumberland Jack’, ‘Old Jack’s Bones’, ‘Gypsy Girls’ and more.

The Hillbilly Goats haven’t been here in a while and say the show will be non-stop, colourful, high energy and a lot of fun!

WHAT: The Hillbilly Goats
