Legendary Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nicky Bomba is set to take to the stage at the Airlie Beach Hotel, 7th February, with his exciting project Bustamento. Known as the being the driving force behind the Melbourne Ska Orchestra and drummer for the John Butler Trio, Nicky has had an eclectic career, performing from Bluesfest to Glastonbury.

His special project Bustamento shows no signs of slowing down. A combination of Nicky’s various musical cohorts, Bustamento is a collage of various sounds and styles. Bustamento harness mento music as their foundation - acoustic Jamaican folk music that influenced ska and reggae.

"Theres a special feeling about touching the seed of that music, it's very joyful, very tongue in cheek", said Nicky.

Having explored such a specific scene of music, Nicky clearly has a deep affection for its origins and significance.

"The essence of the music was making light of things. It was considered to be the voice of the people. If there were things they couldn't say in the newspaper or publicly, they could say them in the context of the song and get away with it."

With seasoned touring experience, Bustamento have added musical flavours from around the world, implementing reggae, steel pan calypso, Mowtown, pop and New Orleans boogie to their wonderfully quirky sound.

Nicky, along with his various projects, is no stranger to the Airlie Beach Hotel.

"We like to do it once or twice a year. It's a bit of a tradition now. We have lots of friends up there. The venue has a nice outdoor tropical vibe so it ties in with the music well. The atmosphere really helps with the context of the music".

Despite such an extensive career, Nicky is still learning new things.

"That's the beauty of music. I don't think I'll ever learn all the things I really want to."

The band will then reform the next day, Sunday 8th February, as ONE LOVE, playing the iconic tunes of Bob Marley and the Wailers, plus many other reggae classics.

A bold new Australian play that tackles identity, history, and belonging is set to take the stage at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) this March.

Crossing the Divide - co-created by Sam Foster, Hayden Jones and Benjin Maza - offers an engaging theatrical experience for both the general public and school audiences.

Set during a two-day school trek through the Blue Mountains, the play follows a group of high school students learning about the 1813 expedition of Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson.

Guided by their leader Lionel, the group begins to unpack the parts of Australian history often left out of textbooks - early encounters between colonists and First Nations people, and the legacy of colonisation.

Blending drama, comedy, live music, and powerful storytelling, this dynamic 60-minute production is designed to resonate with audiences aged 13 and over.

The story unfolds through multi-role ensemble performance and original composition, confronting themes of race, belonging and personal growth with honesty, humour and heart.

Following a successful season at QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre, Crossing the Divide will arrive in Mackay as part of its broader Queensland tour.

Andrew Bobeldyk, Executive Manager of the MECC and Events, said showcasing works like this was a vital part of the venue’s role in the community.

“We’re proud to bring drama back to our stage. Shock Therapy Arts has built a strong reputation with our local educators, so we’re thrilled to offer both a public show and a dedicated school’s session” he said.

Headlining the weekend is the acclaimed Cold Chisel tribute band Gold Chisel and an Australian Midnight Oil tribute, but special guests brothers of Jimmy Barnes, Alan Barnes and John 'Swanee' Swan will set the roof off.

Across the weekend, Alan Barnes will perform original material alongside well-loved Australian classics, with guest appearances from Gold Chisel’s Andy Lutze and collaborative moments that will see multiple artists sharing the stage.

Adding an emotional layer to the event is the presence of Swanee, whose latest album 'Believe' has struck a powerful chord with audiences nationwide. Released last year, the album debuted at number one and features an all-star list of collaborators, including his brothers Alan and Jimmy Barnes on the track Brother of Mine.

The song explores the distance and closeness that often define family life in the music industry, where touring can keep loved ones apart for long stretches of time. Recording it together marked the first time the three brothers had officially collaborated on a single track.

“It was very emotional,” Alan said.

“We’ve sung together on stage for years, but this was different. The song meant something to us as a family, and it turns out it means something to a lot of people.”

For Swanee, Believe is as much about friendship and legacy as it is about music. Featuring artists from across Australia and overseas, the album reflects decades of shared stages, hard roads and lifelong bonds formed within the Australian rock scene.

“If you’re true to your word and you do good gigs, people remember and will be stayers,” Swanee said.

“This album is a testament to the degree of friendship that you get in the Australian rock industry."

That philosophy also extends beyond the stage. Swanee has spent more than 15 years working with children in hospitals, rehabilitation centres and autism support programs, using music as a tool for connection, healing and confidence.

Similarly, Alan said music has always been about more than performing on stage.

“For me, it’s a way to express yourself and get your feelings out," Alan said.

"But I love music because it brings people together, it takes bad feelings away, it gives good feelings and a lot of people just relax when they're out having fun."

With the sad passing of Midnight Oil founding member Rob Hirst, the Australian Midnight Oil Tribute Show will perform a heartfelt dedication to Rob, which will play on the heart strings of many.

The Airlie Beach shows will bring history, heart and shared experience together, with sets featuring songs from Believe, classic Australian rock favourites and collaborative finales that will see multiple musicians filling the stage.

Bowen residents are being invited to celebrate Australia Day with an afternoon of music, history and community spirit at the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club.

The free event, organised by the Rotary Club of Bowen, will take place from 3pm on Australia Day and aims to revive a tradition once hosted by the Bowen Historical Society many years ago.

Organiser Mark Steen said the afternoon would feature a mix of Australiana singalong songs, bush poetry and local history, all in the comfort of an air-conditioned venue.

“We’ll be singing classic Australian songs, with the lyrics projected on a screen so everyone can join in,” Mark said.

Adding a historical element to the celebration, Bowen Historical Society will present a short history and spiel of the Bowen jetty and what the future may hold for the iconic structure.

The afternoon will also include performances by two bush poets, as well as tea and coffee provided by Rotary volunteers.

Mark said the idea behind the event was to encourage people of all ages to reflect on Australia’s history and culture.

“I just felt we were lacking a bit in remembering Australiana, as young folk we used to sing songs, and it's been lost," he said."

"It's just about remembering our younger days when we were learning those songs ourselves."

While the event has a nostalgic focus, Mark said everyone was welcome to attend.

“It’s aimed at the older generation, but it’s really for anyone who wants to enjoy some music, history and a relaxed Australia Day afternoon.”

The Australia Day afternoon is free to attend, with all catering and supplies supported by the Rotary Club of Bowen.

Residents are encouraged to come along, bring a friend and enjoy a uniquely local way to mark the national day.

Opening this Saturday, January 24, at Artspace Mackay is an immersive exhibition from one of Australia’s most influential and leading glass artists, Tom Moore.

‘Natural Oddity’ will showcase sophisticated and technically challenging glass hybrid characters which blur the lines between animal, plant and machine.

Mayor Greg Williamson said it’s an honour to have this exhibition in the region.

“We are thrilled and it’s a great privilege to have acclaimed artist Tom Moore and his ‘Natural Oddity’ exhibition in Mackay,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Tom’s work is a contemporary take on the ancient craft of glass blowing and has been showcased in many of Australia’s major state galleries,” he said.

Artspace Director Tracey Heathwood said the exhibition features video collaborations with Jonathan Nix and Nigel Koop, and photography by Grant Hancock.

“What sets this exhibition apart is these complex glass characters are combined with other media to bring the gallery to life – it explores the universe these creatures inhabit,” Ms Heathwood said.

“The exhibition is enlivened with dreamscape scenes, animations and soundscapes, creating an immersive experience full of whimsy to delight people of all ages,” she said.

Ms Heathwood said there will be a drawing competition, and a workshop with the artist.

“There’s interactive programs and a design competition across three age groups for the chance to have your creature brought to life in glass by Tom – a rare opportunity to see your imaginative creation transformed into reality!”

Arist Tom Moore said he’s very excited to see competition entries from all ages.

“Natural Oddity presents playful and sometimes unsettling reflections on nature and technology,” Mr Moore said.

“I’ve been drawing and creating funny characters most of my life – I am very excited to see other people’s weird and wonderful drawings and challenge myself for what I can create,” he said.

This exhibition will run alongside two others which will be open this week in Artspace’s Foundation and Foyer galleries:

   Habitat by Colleen Heathwood James will be showcased in the Foundation Gallery. These works speak of the artist’s deep connection to the natural environments of Eungella and the Pioneer Valley, concerns about climate change and importance of protecting habitat.

   Coastal Imprints by local printmaking group Printbank Mackay, in the Foyer Gallery, honours two decades of innovation, creative exploration and collaboration in Mackay’s art community. This group exhibition showcases two- dimensional and sculptural work of twelve members who have challenged the possibilities of their medium to produce vibrant interpretations of life on Mackay’s scenic coastline.

All three exhibitions remain on display until Sunday, 2nd April, 2026.
