The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Contributed with thanks to PCYC Queensland’s First Nations State Partnerships Manager Michael Cedar 1-4 - Spirits were high as Mackay’s young dancing stars took to the stage. Photos supplied.

Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Xavier Rudd, Mental as Anything, The Whitlams and more on first lineup announcement for November 2026 The call is out for fans of Xavier Rudd to ‘Follow the Sun’ to the 2026 Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 6-8. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. Having visited Airlie Beach briefly on previous Australian tours, Rudd is already familiar with the region’s scenic beauty, but this will be his first time playing its signature event, dubbed a ‘party in paradise’ and the ‘ultimate music holiday’. “From the photos I’ve seen, the festival setting is amazing,” he said. “My music is definitely a celebration of our natural world, so a place like Airlie feels especially aligned with songs like ‘Follow the Sun’. “These are the kinds of shows I love, and hopefully, weather permitting, we can actually pull down the tent and play under the stars!” Equally as famous for his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism as he is for his extraordinary gifts as a musician, the significance of playing at a destination known as the ‘Heart of the Great Barrier Reef’ isn’t lost on Rudd. “I’ve been lucky to witness some of the good work that people are doing in the world of reef regeneration and that’s inspiring,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue down that path.” Also urging festivalgoers to ‘Live it Up’ in Airlie Beach is beloved Australian band Mental As Anything, whose performance will form part of a historic 50th anniversary tour, comprising a limited number of exclusive festival appearances and select metropolitan headline shows. Original member and iconic pop artist, Reg Mombassa, is promising fans a rare and unforgettable opportunity to experience the band’s timeless hits live once more, and celebrate their unique blend of songwriting, artistry, and performance flair. “We’re known for being a party band, so the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is a perfect fit,” he said. In total agreeance that there’s ‘No Aphrodisiac’ quite like it are The Whitlams, whose frontman Tim Freedman says the band is thrilled to be one of the festival’s headliners for 2026. “I’ve been wanting to return to the Whitsundays for decades and now we have the chance,” he said, adding: “it’s a great line-up, music lifts the soul, and we rock!” Other additions to the first line-up release include The Radiators, Adam Harvey, 19-Twenty, Skinny Living (UK), Little Quirks, The Mason Rack Band, The Wayward Suns, Loonaloop, Salt & Steel and the Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s 2025 Passport to Airlie competition winners Monroe. Tickets are on sale now at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au costing $325 for a three-day pass, or $1100 for a VIP package, both including entry to the opening and after parties that bookend the main event. On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Last Friday, Jay and Dave from Triple M were hosts to guests on the tarmac at Mackay Airport in support of a wonderful cause.
The Dinner on the Runway by Ibis Mackay in support of Mackay Hospital Foundation and our local hospitals is in its fourth year with this year being the most successful of the events to date. A record number of 550 people attended the event which was held under the stars, just metres from where jet aircraft were landing and taking off.
Auction items included a Melbourne Cup Package, bedding from Harvey Norman Bedding and a ride-on mower which was donated by Mackay Outdoor Power Centre. Auctioneer Luke Curtis from Century 21 Coast to Coalfields believes the auction should be entertaining and he didn’t disappoint. Guests also had the opportunity to bid on 50 silent auction items, purchase lucky envelopes or have the chance to win some of the multiple raffle draws throughout the event.
Adriette Meyer, General Manager Ibis Mackay said, “We are thrilled with the 2024 Dinner on the Runway.
“Hosting an event of this magnitude takes a great amount of coordination by many people. Chef Tery and his team work diligently in the lead-up to the event to ensure the three-course meal is meticulously planned and served, which wouldn’t be possible without the in-kind support and donations we receive to bring the event to fruition.
“We also couldn’t host this event without the support of Mackay Airport.”
General Manager Mackay Hospital Foundation, Kristi Algate said, “The Dinner on the Runway by Ibis Mackay is a huge undertaking for Adriette, Tery and the Ibis team as well as the MHF team but its uniqueness and the outcome is totally worthwhile.
“This year saw an increased number of sponsors of the event and we are immensely grateful to them, and to every person and every business who contributed prizes and provided in-kind support.”
While a final tally is yet to be calculated, Ms Algate said early indications are over $150,000 was raised at the Dinner on the Runway this year.
Ms Algate added, “Every cent raised at this event will be directed back into our local hospitals to purchase medical equipment, fund training and implement projects which do not fall within the scope of Queensland Health’s budget.

THE MECC Auditorium reopening celebration featured a terrible guest with terrible tusks, terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.
The Gruffalo was the first show back in the MECC Auditorium following the significant water damage which occurred during heavy storms over the 2023 Christmas period.
Mayor Greg Williamson said it was tremendous to reopen the northern part of the facility with a packed house.
“The Auditorium, North Foyer and Lynette Denny Space have reopened this week after an extended closure and it’s great to have two sold out performances of the Gruffalo to kick things off,” Mayor Williamson said.
“There were 17 schools attending over the two performances, which is about 2000 kids across the two showings,” he said.
“Getting 17 schools to this performance is no easy feat and most of the recognition must go to the Pathways to Performance funding program, which is thanks to BMA and Glencore Hail Creek Mine.
“This program allows schools to organise meaningful curriculum-based excursions to the MECC, by removing the biggest barrier involved – expense.
“A big thanks also goes out to Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal who sponsor the DBCT Kids’ Theatre Season, which supports the MECC team to bring hugely popular children’s shows, like the Gruffalo, to our region.”
Executive Manager MECC and Events Andrew Bobeldyk said it was great to have the 1090 seat theatre space reopened to the public.
“It’s been a disruptive start to 2024, but full credit to the MECC and Events team – they have been brilliant in how they adapted,” Mr Bobeldyk said.
“Dozens of events were rescheduled and moved, including many of our biggest Festival of Arts shows, and there were lots of disruptions during the remediation works, but everything was handled with professionalism and positivity,” he said.
“While weather events happen and damages are unfortunate, I’m proud that the team were able to minimise the disruption to the public as much as possible.”
This performance is proudly supported by the Pathways to Performance Program with thanks to BMA, The Friends of the MECC and Glencore Hail Creek Open Cut Mine.

Mackay VIEW Club is on the lookout for new members who want to give back to their community and make new connections with women in the area.
VIEW, which stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women, is a network of close to 300 clubs and over 14,000 women throughout Australia. It provides a place for women to connect in the community, enjoy social activities, and develop lasting friendships – all while supporting the work of children’s education charity, The Smith Family.
Mackay VIEW Club representative Brenda McLean highlighted the fulfilling experience of being a club member and said, “I’ve always believed in giving back and I’ve met so many amazing people that I would’ve never had the opportunity to meet if it wasn’t for the VIEW club.
“We’re very social and we do lots of things together, it’s just a great way to connect with others and help students in need.”
Mackay VIEW Club President Sandra Janson said this year is the perfect time to join VIEW as social events are back on the calendar.
“The rising cost of living has had an even greater impact on those already doing it tough, parents should not have to choose between putting dinner on the table or buying their child a uniform for school.
“This is why it is so important that we can help children experiencing disadvantage with their education through the Smith Family.”

On August 3, 2024, the streets from Mackay Harbour to Seaforth became a whirl of vibrancy and colour as participants united in bright tutus for the 2024 Tutu Challenge in support of ovarian cancer research.
Miss Diamond International Finalist of 2024, Jennifer-Lee Houseman, who is widely recognised for her modelling and dancing talents, organised the event, and the day turned out to be a powerful demonstration of solidarity in the fight against one of the most common cancers affecting women.
Under the banner of #loveyourovaries, the challenge aimed to highlight the importance of ovarian cancer awareness, as nearly 20,000 Australian women are diagnosed with the disease each year. Miss JLee's efforts were part of a growing movement to shine a light on this vital cause.
Participants were greeted by JLee, who radiantly wore a bright red tutu.
"Her passion was contagious," said her proud mother, Jacqueline Houseman.
"She handed out steel badges to each participant, a token of remembrance and a symbol of their shared commitment to the cause."
Miss JLee's dedication was evident throughout the day, with the event raising $500 for ovarian cancer research. The convoy, made up of bikes and cars, embarked on a route that was as much about the journey as it was about the destination.
Along the way, participants stopped at various locations to complete challenges designed to test their resilience and build connections with those involved.
From bowling at the Seaforth Bowls Club to climbing palm trees and hunting for a vintage 1946 Excelsior, each task was met with enthusiasm and fun.
In a playful twist, participants collected Scrabble tiles at each stop, adding an element of strategy to the day's events, which culminated in a final Scrabble game at the end of the challenge.
As the sun set, the event concluded with a celebration of achievements and prizes were awarded, however Ms Houseman noted that "the greatest prize of all was the sense of community and shared purpose that permeated the event."
Looking ahead, Jennifer-Lee is already planning another fundraising event for 2025. The event, which will undoubtedly involve tutus, is anticipated to be another fun-filled day aimed at raising further awareness and support for ovarian cancer research.
“We invite everyone to mark their calendars for the Tutu Challenge 2025, set to take place on the second weekend of August 2025, promising an even bigger and brighter event,” Ms Houseman said.

The Australian ABBA Tribute Show are becoming regulars at the Airlie Beach Hotel, and yet they always bring in an amazing high energy crowd every time.
Band Manager Sam Bennett, who plays Bjorn in the show, says he and the rest of the band always enjoy performing here in Airlie Beach.
“We always love our trip to Airlie Beach itself, it’s a well-deserved break in the sunshine from the very unpredictable Melbourne weather,” said Sam.
“Everyone is always on holiday time there and it’s very easy to perform to a crowd that is there either on holiday or living that holiday lifestyle.”
Although Sam says he loves performing in front of the relaxed and fun Airlie Beach crowd because of the holiday lifestyle, it’s also due to the hits they perform too.
Sam says they perform all the favourites but also play some B-sides and hidden gems that the band love.
All members in the band have a theatre background and Sam believes it helps them deliver an authentic ABBA show for the crowd.
“I think doing an ABBA tribute show is the same thing as theatre, you're performing as a character,” explained Sam.
“We perform as Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Benny and Björn, we are a character, we have a story and a history.
“We all have our own connection to these songs, both in reality as performers, but also in characters.”
Having a strong stage presence combined with the catchy ABBA tunes makes it an unbelievably fun afternoon.
“I am always so excited to come to perform at Airlie Beach,” exclaimed Sam.
“It's always a big crowd, filled with people that plan to come there and people that are just walking through the street, see that we're playing and end up staying for two hours watching the show.
“It's always such a fun and high energy afternoon, so if anyone is even remotely near the Airlie Beach Hotel on the Saturday and Sunday, please come down. It's a free show, if you don't like it you can leave, but I doubt that you won't like it.”

At the weekend David Flower organised a beautiful bunch of artists to come together for an intimate three-day gathering on a private property in Preston (Conway Rd).
The gathering offered a variety of entertainment across different music genres, including folk /funk /rock and roots artists and a full program of activities, games and guaranteed spontaneous moments known as the ‘Flower Effect’.
The fantastic festival helped raise much-needed funds for Eco Barge Clean Seas, a spectacular organisation that arranges marine debris clean-ups alongside caring for injured turtles.
Founder of the festival, David Flower, gushed over how the three-day event went:
“I think everyone was just in awe of the atmosphere that was there because the setting was so beautiful, the skies were blue, and the sun would bank around the back of the stage, so everyone was in the shade, and early in the day and at night, everyone had a dance.”
“It was just beautiful.”
Around 200 individuals attended the event, which David said gave the festival a real “community feel.”
Some highlights from the weekend included the finishing act Salt n Steel, who got all the audience jumping and singing along at the end of the night, and the game of backyard cricket. However, David added that the “cherry on the top of a very great cake was that “everyone left with a big smile on their faces and the rumour’s getting out now of how great it was!”
While they are still counting numbers for how much was raised for Eco Barge, last year they raised $2.5k, and are expecting the numbers to be even higher this year.
Keep an eye out for next year's festival and join in raising funds for a great cause.
