The award-winning concert series Between the Tides is back in July and has found a stunning new home on Ngaro Country at Airlie Beach along the sparkling Great Barrier Reef coastline. For three years, this one-of-a-kind event has brought together music, culture, and nature, and now it is stepping into an exciting new chapter. Find your rhythm on The Reef as some of Australia’s most celebrated musicians take to the stage against the stunning backdrop of the Whitsunday coast. Headlined by Boy & Bear, whose soaring harmonies fill the air and lift across the foreshore, the music flows seamlessly from one performance to the next. Jem Cassar-Daley follows with soulful songs that drift over the sand, drawing you in with every note. Mid Drift carries the feeling onward with intimate, heartfelt melodies that seem to ripple with the waves. Tjaka sparks a surge of energy, blending beats, rap, and didgeridoo in a way that makes the crowd move together. Rounding out the lineup, local singer Kaylee West brings warm, folk-inspired songs shaped by the ocean and open road, perfectly in tune with the coastal setting. Guided by the custodians of the Ngaro Nation, this is more than a concert. Experience cultural performances, sand art, workshops, and knowledge-sharing, alongside locally crafted food, drinks, and art. Dance, share stories, and connect with the rhythms of this ever-changing coastal landscape. Feel the breeze off the Coral Sea, and let the music, culture, and coastal beauty carry you away. Between the Tides at Airlie Beach is a day to connect, to dance, to share stories, and to create memories you’ll never forget. Tickets are limited and expected to sell quickly. Music lovers are being encouraged to get involved in one of the Whitsundays’ most exciting live music events, with volunteers now being sought for Between the Tides in Airlie Beach this July. Presented as part of the QLD Music Trails: The Reef series, the one-day festival-style experience will transform the Airlie Beach Foreshore into a vibrant celebration of music, culture, art and community on Saturday, 4th July. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Whitsunday coastline on Ngaro Country, the event will feature a stellar line-up of Australian artists including Boy & Bear, Jem Cassar-Daley, Mid Drift, Tjaka and Kaylee West. Organisers are calling for volunteers to help make the event a success, offering locals the chance to be part of the action while supporting a major cultural event in the region. Volunteer roles include greeting patrons, scanning tickets, handing out wristbands and assisting with merchandise sales throughout the afternoon and evening. There are two volunteer shift options available, and once volunteers complete their shift, they’ll receive a GA18+ wristband allowing them to enjoy the live performances and festival atmosphere afterwards. More than just a concert, Between the Tides promises a rich cultural experience featuring workshops, sand art, cultural performances and knowledge-sharing opportunities, alongside locally crafted food, drinks and art installations. By day, Whitsundays community leader Bec Woods works full-time supporting local families and community members. By night, she writes dystopian fiction. Now, after years balancing community work, family life, and writing around a full-time schedule, Woods is preparing to release her debut novel, The Quiet Held, on the 30th June. Set in a tightly controlled society governed through compliance, allocation, and “care,” The Quiet Held explores what happens when systems designed to protect people slowly become systems that control them. For Woods, the inspiration did not come from abstract science fiction ideas, but from years spent working within real community structures in the Whitsundays. “When you work closely with people long enough, you start noticing how much power systems hold over everyday life,” Woods said. “Not just governments, but policies, assessments, processes, approvals. Most systems begin with good intentions, but over time they can become impersonal. That tension became the heart of the book.” The local author said the novel was shaped around the emotional realities of institutional language, efficiency culture, and the pressure many people feel to remain compliant within systems they depend on. Despite writing a full trilogy, Woods has continued working full-time throughout the drafting and publishing process. “This book was written between work and everyday responsibilities,” she said. “I think being a frontline worker helped the story. There’s space here to observe people closely. Community work keeps you connected to what matters.” The novel blends literary fiction with speculative dystopian themes and has drawn comparisons to Never Let Me Go and The Handmaid’s Tale for its restrained emotional style and social commentary. Woods said she hopes readers connect not only with the larger dystopian themes, but with the quieter human moments inside the story. “At its core, it’s really about belonging, survival, and the small compromises people make to feel safe.” The Quiet Held will be available in paperback and ebook formats from 30th June 2026 from Amazon. https://amzn.asia/d/0dqMXxuw Photo supplied

Where do stories come from? That question will take centre stage at the 2026 Whitsundays Writers Festival when three accomplished regional authors come together for an entertaining and insightful panel discussion exploring the origins of creativity. Where Do You Get Your Story Ideas From? will reveal the surprising, strange, and often mundane everyday moments that spark books, characters, and stories, offering audiences a glimpse into the minds of working writers. The afternoon session forms part of the Whitsundays Writers Festival on Sunday 13 September 2026 at the Whitsunday Marine Club, Cannonvale. Festival Director Richard Evans said the panel would appeal to readers and aspiring writers alike. “People often assume writers are waiting for lightning to strike, but inspiration can come from a conversation overheard in a café, a childhood memory, a newspaper article, a road trip, or a simple ‘what if?’ question,” Richard said. “This discussion explores the many ways stories begin and how writers transform everyday experiences into something readers connect with.” The panel brings together three authors whose work spans personal development, adventure memoir, and crime fiction. Krissy Regan Children’s Author & Adult Personal Development After decades of travel and delivering projects for clients around the world, Krissy Regan embarked on a creative journey of her own, publishing her first book in 2020 and quickly following it with five more titles. A passionate storyteller, Krissy writes for children and adults, creating meaningful, values-based content designed to inspire and encourage. She is also a regular contributor to family publications including Kiddipedia and other print and online media. Gary Wood Adventure Memoir Award-winning author, travel writer, and motorcycle adventurer Gary Wood finds inspiration on the back roads of regional Australia. Through his books Gun Fights, Ghosts and Goannas and Red Dust and Rainforests, as well as his popular website Digital Swaggie, Gary documents the people, landscapes, and forgotten places that continue to shape Australia’s identity. His storytelling combines history, observation, humour, and a deep appreciation for the practical wisdom found in regional and remote communities. Veronica Lando Crime Fiction North Queensland author Veronica Lando grew up above her parents’ Melbourne bookshop, surrounded by stories from an early age. Her debut novel The Whispering won the 2021 Banjo Prize for Fiction and was shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards Courier-Mail People’s Choice Book of the Year and Sisters in Crime Scarlet Stiletto Award. She has since secured multiple publishing contracts and established herself as a rising voice in Australian crime fiction. Drawing inspiration from North Queensland’s uniquely harsh and sometimes dangerous landscapes, Veronica creates atmospheric stories that blur the line between beauty and menace. The discussion forms part of a full day of literary events celebrating local authors, regional stories, and community connection. The 2026 festival programme also includes the prestigious From the Heart keynote by multi-award-winning romance author Rachel Armstrong, the presentation of the Whitsundays Literary Heart Awards, and Stories by the Sea — a free community event featuring more than 20 regional authors, book sales and swaps, live music, art demonstrations, children’s activities, and a gold coin BBQ. Bustamento and Nicky Bomba are bringing their tropical Carribean classics back to Airlie Beach Hotel for two great, booty-swaying free shows. The show on Saturday will kick off the weekend with tropical vibes featuring Bustamento’s ARIA nominated first album: Intrepid Adventures to the Lost Riddim islands! Then on Sunday, Nicky Bomba and Bustamento will be bringing Bob Marley and The Wailers back to the beach with their ONE LOVE tribute filled with reggae classics.
This team up of Nicky Bomba, the Jon Butler Trio and members of the Melbourne Ska Orchestra a.k.a the brilliant team behind Bustamento. A band who blends the best beats and instrument to create a performance that has been described as Byron Bay Boogaloo meets African horn snappin' goodness, Glastonbury mud shuffles with a New Orleans blood transfusion and Jamaican Reggae Bootysway with a hot Trinidadian Sauce. So, if you're looking for a show that will bring Calypso love songs served on the soundwaves of the steel pan drum then these shows are not to be missed as Nicky says the shows are all about the different meanings and the stories behind the songs.
“We take it back to the music that was happening in the island of Jamaica and the Caribbean before Marley was famous.” and it’s, “Magnificent music that's that still stands the test of time and still as relevant today as it was then.”
With this toe-tapping tropical backing it's time to "Dance boy, Dance!” and get up on that dance floor! Nicky Bomba’s comical personality truly shines when the band’s all together making music and sharing that sunshine and joy with the locals. It’s all about making people happy while savouring the music they’re cooking up in their groovy kitchen.
“The music we play is actually quite universal. It feels to all demographics, and you know, just the more we play that music, the more we realize, how universal it is”
Nicky and his crew are no strangers to the Whitsundays, and they’ll be up in Airlie Beach celebrating this February what would have been Bob Marleys 80th birthday. They plan on going to the lagoon for barbeques, and bike riding is on the agenda while visiting some good friends up here from Melbourne.
It will be two dynamic shows of musical journeys with fantastic connections as they perform hits from their own album on Saturday and tracks from Marley’s own amazing collection on Sunday. Enjoy a beer and a boogie as Nicky Bomba and Bustamento speaks to the uplifting connection between music and your soul on this colourful Caribbean weekend. Over the last few weeks, Mackay's city heart has undergone a major transformation, with the Mky City Heart Collective leading efforts to revitalise the region. This initiative celebrates the city’s rich history, particularly its once-thriving Chinatown, by blending art, culture, and community to breathe new life into downtown Mackay.
Inspired by the once-thriving Chinatown district between Wellington and Macalister streets from the 1880s to the 1930s, the project highlights this important hub for market gardens and Asian grocers. Despite its significance, this chapter of Mackay's history remains largely unknown to many, and that’s why the Mky City Heart Collective is working hard to bring this forgotten history back to life.
Local business owners, artists, and volunteers have teamed up to create unique experiences for the community that blend Mackay's history with modern-day culture. Among the highlights is a stunning installation of traditional Koi kites, created by the community and on display as part of the celebrations.
These kites, along with other stunning art pieces, aim to acknowledge the importance of Chinatown while injecting fresh energy, colour, and creativity into the city.
Ally Blines, owner of Let The Children Play Toyshop, is one of the many local business owners contributing to this exciting initiative.
"The kites are part of a bigger project," she explains.
Ally has been hosting kite-making workshops at Let The Children Play Toyshop during the school holidays, where children can create their own Koi kites that will be featured in the installation.
"We did some workshops in-store during the school holidays where the kids could make kites and they're being used in the installation and then they can come and collect them when it's all over.
“It’s about making people aware that this part of town used to be part of Mackay’s Chinatown,” she shares.
“A lot of people don’t realise that we had a Chinatown or what an important part it played in the development of the city.”
As part of the Mky City Heart Collective, Ally is just one member of a passionate group of volunteers, business owners, and artists all working together to show that the city heart is far from "dead."
"We all work together…there's actually a lot happening here in the city heart and we just want people to know that our town is alive and it’s such a nice community to be involved in!”

Film & Arts Mackay is kicking off 2025 with a stellar line-up of films, starting with a journey to Bhutan in the charming The Monk and The Gun. The latest charmer from Oscar-nominated Pawo Choyning Dorji (Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom, which was presented in December 2023), is set in the weeks before Bhutan’s first democratic election in 2006. This delightfully droll and slyly satirical film boasts a string of characters and misadventures, in a tale as suspenseful as it is winning.
Film & Arts Mackay has announced that ticket sales for this year’s screenings will close at 7:20pm, with films starting promptly at 7:30pm. To avoid missing out, patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance.

Last Tuesday, the Mackay Isaac Region kicked off 2025 with the launch of its bold new destination events campaign, “Keep Up.”
The campaign, unveiled by Mackay Isaac Tourism, aims to inspire visitors to explore the region’s exciting adventures, vibrant events, and breathtaking natural landscapes.
“Keep Up” encourages travellers of all ages to embrace the spirit of discovery and connection throughout the Mackay Isaac Region.
Mackay Isaac Tourism CEO Jeff Stewart-Harris said that the region's events calendar competes with those of neighbouring destinations, making it the ideal time to launch a campaign centred around major events.
"Events provide the opportunity for engagement with a broad audience who have the propensity to stay in region for longer or to visit in non-peak periods,” Mr Stewart-Harris said.
“‘Keep Up’ challenges travellers to match the vibrant rhythm of Mackay Isaac, where there's always something new to explore.
"From national sporting events like Mackay Marina Run and Fox Superflow to cultural festivals like the Mackay Festival of Arts and St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, this campaign highlights the pioneering spirit that defines our region."
In the year ending June 2024, the Mackay Isaac Region welcomed 1.2 million overnight visitors - a 3.7 per cent increase - which includes a doubling in leisure visitation (up 19.3 per cent) since 2019, with spending continuing to surge over the same period to $803.1 million (up 51.3 per cent).
"What's especially exciting is the strong growth in holiday visitors, complementing our traditionally robust business visitor sector," Mr Stewart-Harris added.
"This campaign is about momentum.
“We want travellers to feel the thrill of what's next, encouraging them to stay longer and keep discovering the incredible moments that make Mackay Isaac unforgettable.
"Whether you're cheering at a sports event, hiking through lush rainforest trails, or dancing the night away at a festival, the “Keep Up” campaign captures the essence of what makes our region so special.”
Are you ready to "Keep Up”? Explore everything the Mackay Isaac Region has to offer at mackayisaac.com/whats-on.
This campaign has been made possible through funding support from the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland.

Dirty Deeds is back in Airlie Beach bringing the real Australian pub sound with their smashing tribute to AC/DC with the Bon Scott vs Brian Johnson show. Dirty Deeds have been kicking the can for AC/DC for over 20 years and are a force to be reckoned with LIVE on the big stage. No other show comes close to the pure power, energy and dedication of these High Voltage Rockers! Dirty Deeds are the real thing.
For two stand-alone shows Dirty Deeds are bringing AC/DC's signature sound of loud, pounding riffs and grooving back-beats to The Pub at Airlie Beach Hotel. Buckle in for three and a half hours of rib-crushing, blood-curdling, brain damaging, no bullshit, thunder rock. Dirty Deeds are brining you iconic music straight to your table, they’re not shy about getting on top of the bar and rocking in your face.
They know the pub crowds demand blood and they’re here to deliver with a sound that’s loud and crisp. Never down-tuned, Dirty Deeds brings the guitars, the drums and the legendary vocals that rocketed AC/DC into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. You won’t find any backing tracks here, just "a really good band," with years and years of ROCK experience.
This show is different as it gives two brilliant front men and one of the best lead guitarists ever to strut the stage besides Angus Young himself. There’s NO BULL when Dirty Deeds are showing off so you better be onboard for electric hard rock that defined an era. Both Brian Johnson and Bon Scott are going head-to-head with no restraint as Dirty Deeds brings both singers’ eras to life.
“It's amazing because it's a new crowd every time ... we've certainly packed the place out where it's standing room only and that's been fantastic.”
Forget wigs and toy cannons, it’s a crowd-pleasing tribute show that brings the authentic AD/DC experience. So, gather your mates and sit back with a cold one, or bring your girls and rock on that dance floor, everyone from your nan to your nephew will be screaming along. With platinum hits like ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and ‘Back in Black’ and of course who could leave out ‘Highway to Hell’ and ‘Thunderstruck’.
All those hit rock songs and more at The Pub with Dirty Deeds, who have said they will be bringing MAXIMUM AC/DC. Saturday or Sunday it’s a show not to be missed, starting at 2pm and keeping you hooked till 5:30pm. Book your table now at: thepubairliebeach.com.au as this show is a next level crowd pleaser.

Mackay region art followers can experience more than 60 contemporary and historical works from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Indigenous Australian Art collection when the exhibition ‘I, Object’ tours Artspace Mackay from January 18 to March 30.
‘I, Object’ features contemporary painting, sculpture and installation by leading Queensland artists Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Michael Boiyool Anning, Fiona Foley, Danie Mellor, Christian Thompson, Warraba Weatherall and others, alongside 20 historical shields, boomerangs and clubs.
QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said ‘I, Object’ was an exhibition first developed by Bruce Johnson McLean, former Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at QAGOMA, and shown at the Gallery of Modern Art from August 2020 to August 2021.
“We’re really thrilled this iteration of ‘I, Object’ will now tour to audiences in regional Queensland including Rockhampton, Caboolture, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Cairns and Mackay,” Mr Saines said.
“‘I, Object’ considers the many complex relationships Indigenous Australian artists continue to have with objects – from the histories informing their creation to the social and cultural consequences of their collection,” he said.
“The exhibition demonstrates the great pride and inspiration of inherited cultural practices and historical Indigenous objects, and reveals the difficulties posed by their collection and estrangement.”
Deputy Mayor Karen May said it was exciting to have this significant exhibition of Indigenous Australian Art at our gallery.
“We’re grateful to QAGOMA for touring this exhibition to our gallery, providing an opportunity for us all to experience this important expression of identity, culture and connection,” Cr May said.
“This exhibition will run alongside three others opening in our Foundation and Foyer galleries also from January 18,” she said.
Thea Anamara Perkins: Dualities will be in the Foundation Gallery. These works incorporate portraiture and landscape to question representations of First Nations peoples and Country.
Danish Quapoor is a multidisciplinary artist based in Townsville. He is known for his distinctive flat-colour works which employ narratives that interrogate personal identity.
Quapoor’s mural installation ‘departed’, on the gallery’s foyer wall, will reflect upon departures from environments, situations and relationships.
Anneke Silver’s Iconic Moments will be in the Foyer Gallery and features expressive brush strokes of rich outback colour. They explore relationships between symbol and experience – the everyday and the extraordinary.
