Mackay families are invited to enjoy an evening of activities, entertainment and history at the free Light Party at Bluewater Quay on October 31st. Running from 4pm to 9pm, the family-friendly community event offers an alternative to Halloween, with children encouraged to dress as their favourite light-themed or positive characters. This year’s program will include two 30-minute freestyle BMX performances by JC Action Sport, scheduled for 5.30pm and 7.30pm, alongside live entertainment, food trucks and free activities for children. Organisers said the event would combine fun with opportunities for families to learn about historical figures and events associated with the 31st of October. These include William Wilberforce, who was sworn into Parliament on the 31st October and went on to see slavery abolished in 1833, and the Australian Light Horsemen, whose charge at Beersheba during World War I took place on the same date. The program will also explore Martin Luther, who posted his 95 Theses on October 31st, an event associated with the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, and George Müller, who came to faith on the same date and cared for about 10,000 orphans throughout his lifetime. Children can discover these stories through hands-on activities, with fortress building, weaving, horse racing, printing, cookie decorating, light-themed craft creations and fishing among the options on offer. The event aims to bring families together for an evening of entertainment, creativity and learning, with activities designed to engage children of different ages. With free activities and live performances planned throughout the evening, families can drop by Bluewater Quay and take part in the celebrations. The Light Party will run from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 31st October, at Bluewater Quay, Mackay. Entry and children’s activities are free, with food available from food trucks. Last year’s Light Party brought Mackay families together at Bluewater Quay for an evening of free activities, entertainment and historical storytelling as an alternative to Halloween. BY GEORGIA MCDONALD Welcome back to the musical hot seat. This week we sat with Peta Richards, whose love of country music has taken her from the rodeo circuit to the Whitsundays, where she continues to perform and share her love for music with the community. Music has been part of Peta's life since the age of eight. She taught herself guitar, began writing her own songs and eventually formed a band with her cousins called Shiraz. “There was a big family bond with music,” she reflected. Shiraz travelled throughout western Queensland, performing at rodeos and camel races, as well as appearing as guest artists for country music performers Adam Brand and Beccy Cole. They also took home the Best Overall Prize at the Charters Towers Country Music Festival in 2008. Having six children meant Peta's performing days slowed down, but music was never something she walked away from completely. After moving to the Whitsundays, Peta continued performing while putting down roots in the local music scene. In 2023, she joined forces with three partners to open local karaoke bar, Lola's. One of the things Peta loves most is seeing people come out of their shells and watching shy singers grow in confidence on stage. While Peta has spent years performing covers, she's now stepping into a new chapter by releasing her own original music. Her debut single, Don't Send Me No Roses, came out in June and tells the story of betrayal and reaching the point where enough is enough. Peta also performs at venues around the Whitsundays, with her own original songs on the setlist, and is set to take to the stage at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music. Despite years of performing, Peta still gets the same enjoyment out of getting on stage. While playing in a band has its perks, performing solo means all eyes are on her, which can be both nerve-racking and rewarding. For Peta, there's nothing better than seeing a crowd enjoying themselves and connecting with the music. When it comes to her own music taste, Peta is still a country girl at heart, with Shania Twain remaining a longtime favourite. She's also loving newer artists like Ella Langley, but for Peta, music is about more than just a catchy tune, with the right song having the ability to lift someone up when they need it most. With country music, Peta has a love for the lyrics: “They actually really tell stories.” It's something she's hoping to capture in her upcoming release, Let's Make a Stand, which encourages people to reach out and support those who may be struggling. The song is also a family affair, with her daughter contributing backing vocals and harmonies. With the Airlie Beach Festival of Music just around the corner, Peta is looking forward to sharing her original music with the crowd. After years of performing covers around the Whitsundays, it's an exciting opportunity to showcase her songwriting. And with more original music on the way, there's plenty more to come from Peta! Song Recommendation For This Week: Upcoming Release: Let’s Make a Stand – Peta Richards What? Airlie Beach Festival Of Music Where? Airlie Beach When? 6-8th November

Fresh songs and a chance to learn from some of Australia’s leading songwriters will take centre stage when the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival returns for its sixth year. The festival returns from June 2–6, 2027, with Saturday June 5 set aside for music lovers to join the fun at the Whitsunday Sailing Club through workshops and live performances. The daytime Songwriting Summit and workshops will welcome emerging and experienced songwriters, along with anyone curious about how songs come together. Visitors can hear from professional songwriter mentors about their craft, while local writers will have opportunities to showcase their own work. For event organizer Karen Jacobsen, the appeal is giving people a glimpse into a process they might rarely consider when listening to their favourite music. “We demystify that by letting people behind the curtain,” she said. “It's a true celebration of the art and craft of writing songs and being together with other people who are either doing that or love original music. “That's something we're really proud of, preserving that craft of songwriting.” Six professional songwriters will come together at Pinnacles Airlie Beach for the festival’s residency, with audiences later hearing how the songs took shape by enjoying live performances of the newly written material. “It's a very exciting, uplifting event we have because, again, it's just that palpable experience of witnessing brand new creative work performed for the first time,” Karen said. The 2027 lineup is yet to be announced, with artist announcements and ticket updates being shared through the Whitsundays Arts Festival website. Photo caption: WSF 2023 Songwriter Workshop. They save time without compromising on flavour, making them ideal for both small families and large gatherings. Here are a few ideas for one-pot wonders that are sure to become favourites in your kitchen.
1. One-Pot Chicken and Rice
This is a classic, filling dish that’s perfect for a cozy dinner. Simply brown some chicken thighs, sauté onions and garlic, then add rice, chicken broth, and your choice of veggies. Let everything cook together, and in less than 30 minutes, you’ll have a delicious meal. Add herbs like thyme or rosemary for extra flavour, and feel free to toss in some peas or carrots for added colour and nutrition.
2. One-Pot Pasta Primavera
For a lighter, veggie-packed meal, try a one-pot pasta primavera. Sauté garlic and colourful vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes in a bit of olive oil, then add your choice of pasta and vegetable broth. Let it all cook together, and you'll have a tasty dish with minimal effort. It’s a great way to sneak in extra servings of vegetables while still enjoying the comfort of pasta.
3. One-Pot Chilli
Chilli is perfect for a one-pot meal, especially in cooler months. Brown some ground beef then add beans, diced tomatoes, and your favourite chilli spices. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes, and you’ll have a rich, hearty meal that’s perfect for feeding a crowd. Top with cheese, sour cream, and cilantro for the ultimate chilli experience.
4. One-Pot Vegetarian Stew
For a plant-based option, try a one-pot vegetable stew. Combine potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, and canned tomatoes with vegetable broth and your favourite herbs. This warm, comforting stew is easy to make and full of wholesome ingredients. It’s a great option for vegetarians and those looking to enjoy a lighter, yet nourishing meal.

Business owners, regional leaders, and Rotary members gathered at Ocean International last Tuesday, united in their mission to break the silence on domestic violence. Dressed in purple, attendees stood in solidarity, symbolising hope for a future free from violence. While we know change takes time, the focus remains on educating future generations and fostering respect among men, women, and children to create a safer society.
The room fell silent as DVF Project Manager Michael Buckeridge shared a sobering statistic of 134 domestic violence cases recorded in a single day.
"There are thousands of men and women suffering from this," he said.
"Thankfully, we have fantastic organisations picking up the broken pieces… but we need your help.
"We want businesses and community members to wear these purple shirts and start conversations – in their workplaces, in their schools, and amongst their friends.
"We need to reach young people – the young men in schools – to teach them respect.
“To me, respect is worth more than gold."
The Rotary Domestic & Family Violence Prevention Program continues to expand, with all 12 Mackay high schools now officially on board. Betterment Project presenters will visit from May 12–16, delivering powerful messages to students.
Momentum is building for the "Respect In Every Step: March To End Domestic Violence" on May 30, with Kinetic Buses generously covering half the transport costs. So far, 580 students have committed to the march, and the crowd is expected to surpass 1,000 participants.
The upcoming Bravus Breakfast at Ocean International on May 29 has already exceeded expectations, with 206 students and teachers confirmed to attend.
Sponsorship packages are available, giving businesses an opportunity to support the cause while receiving 40 shirts and a branded pull-up banner.
Visit www.rotarymackay.org.au/index.php/dv/ to learn more.
“We hope that May will be a month of awareness, action, and conversations that matter.”

Australian Elvis tribute artist Damian Mullins will be performing not one, but two incredible shows that will transport you straight to the heart of the King of Rock and Roll’s most iconic eras. If you’re an Elvis fan, this is a weekend you won’t want to miss!
Damian’s journey to becoming one of Australia’s top Elvis tribute artists began with a childhood love for the King’s music. "As a young boy, my mum loved his music, she would play it when we travelled in the car. That's how I was exposed to his music, and ever since then, I have just loved his songs," Damian shares. His passion for Elvis (and jumpsuit collection) has grown over the years, and he continues to bring the legendary performer’s spirit to life on stage with every stunning performance.
In 2012 he won the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, a competition endorsed by Elvis Presley Enterprises. From that moment, his career as a full-time Elvis tribute artist took off and now, he’s bringing his electrifying shows to Airlie Beach for the first time ever!
The weekend kicks off with the Aloha From Hawaii show, a breathtaking tribute to Elvis’s legendary 1973 concert broadcast live via satellite. The ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ concert is one of those iconic moments in Elvis’s career, and Damien captures that amazing concert’s magic and grandeur. With a stunning live band and spectacular visuals, Damian will perform some of Elvis’s most memorable hits, including Burning Love, Suspicious Minds, and Can't Help Falling in Love. Be ready to expect a high-energy performance that will have you singing and dancing along.
Damian’s dedication to authenticity and his deep understanding of Elvis’s music ensures that fans of all ages will feel the magic of the King’s music. “It’s going to be a very big variety of Elvis’s music,” Damian explains, “I try to give the die-hard fans a great mix of his songs," His show isn’t just about singing as he thrives on audience interaction, ensuring that everyone feels involved in the experience.
On Sunday, Damian returns with the Elvis On Tour show, which celebrates the electrifying energy of Elvis during his prime. This show takes you on a nostalgic journey through Elvis’s most iconic tour performances, showcasing the charisma and passion that made him a global legend.
“I’m an Elvis entertainer more than an impersonator, yes, I look and sound like Elvis but I get a lot of good energy from entertaining. It’s just lots of fun,” Damian says. Any long-time Elvis fan will be swept away by the incredible energy and stage presence Damian brings to every show.

St Catherine’s Catholic College proudly presents Meredith Wilson’s ‘The Music Man’. Written in 1957 and standing the test of time, this musical is sure to engage even the most dubious of musical audiences. The show is a six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy that has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.
The Music Man follows fast-talking travelling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he promises to organise – this, despite the fact that he doesn't know one note from another. Proserpine State High School is proud to present their energetic school production of Disney’s Newsies – The Broadway Musical. With more than 100 students and staff bringing this entertaining musical to life on their Performing Arts Centre stage, and many months of hard work spent perfecting lines, dance routines, and musical scores, it promises to be a show to remember!
Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, this Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys' expense, Kelly and his newsies take action. With help from the beautiful female reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognises the power of "the little man".
Musical Director Amelia Hinschen said a highlight from rehearsals for the musical was the broad range of talent showcased by the students.
“They are a talented and creative group of singers, dancers, musicians, and actors who put their own flair on their characters and are willing to try what will work best as a cast,” she said.
“Five of our leads are Year 12 students who want to pursue acting or musical theatre for their tertiary studies next year. For them, it’s more than an opportunity to be up on stage; it’s what they want for a career.”
Many students' skills are also shining outside the spotlight, as they construct props, sew costumes, paint sets, prepare the technical side of the show, and assist in backstage roles.
Tickets are on sale now! Don’t miss the opportunity to support Proserpine State High School’s students and enjoy an unforgettable theatrical experience for the whole family. Shows run from Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th May, including three evening performances and one matinee on Saturday 10th May. Fish D'Vine will provide delicious food and drinks at all shows for purchase.

For music lovers in Airlie Beach, the end of March promises an unforgettable experience as Bobby Bruce, known to the world as ‘Nearly Neil’, brings the iconic sound of Neil Diamond to life at The Pub. With two free shows on Saturday, March 29th, and Sunday, March 30th, from 2pm to 5.30pm, audiences are in for a nostalgic treat.
Direct from Vancouver, Canada, Bobby Bruce has been delighting audiences across the globe for nearly two decades with his tribute to Neil Diamond. Internationally, Bobby as Neil Diamond gained a loyal following, with his powerful vocals and stage presence placing him among the finest tribute acts in the world. The fact that we’re getting this calibre of performance for free is something special for Airlie Beach.
Bobby’s tribute to Neil Diamond started off as a party trick, which became a full-time career - “Well, oddly, I was in my hometown, Vancouver, and I was working at an Australian theme dinner theatre. We all had to impersonate someone, so I decided to do Tom Jones,” he recalls with a chuckle. “Someone said, ‘Doesn’t he sing Sweet Caroline?’ And I said, ‘No, no, that’s Neil Diamond.’ I opened my mouth, sang Sweet Caroline, and they all looked at me funny and said, ‘Maybe you should do him.’”.
Bobby’s voice is the heart of his performance, with his rendition of Neil Diamond’s classic hits like Cracklin’ Rosie, Kentucky Woman, and Sweet Caroline is nothing short of exhilarating. But it’s the song Holly Holy that truly resonates with him. “My favourite to sing is Holly Holy. It has the nice peaks and valleys. It’s a nice song for me to sing, and it gets a very swoony reaction from the crowd.”
For Bobby, Neil Diamond was the soundtrack of his childhood - “It was my parents’ music,” he shared. “They played it, and all of our family and friends played it. It was always on the old eighties tracks when we were travelling in the car.” This connection with the music is something Bobby shares with his audience, and it’s a powerful experience. “I really enjoy seeing that come alive in the faces of people in the audience. You can see the memories coming back for them too.”
This upcoming performance promises to be an absolute treat, with all of Neil Diamond’s greatest hits in store and even a special extra set to showcase Bobby’s incredible vocal range. "Expect all the big hits of Neil Diamond that you would know in this country," says Bobby. “Plus, we'll be doing an extra set of music, giving me an opportunity to showcase the other things I can do with my voice.”
With the Solitary Band backing him, featuring Amanda Easton Morel on backing vocals, Dale Genner on keyboards, Mitch Farmer on drums, Jeff Camilleri on bass, and Rex Goh on electric guitar, the performance promises to be an unforgettable musical experience.
Get ready to relive the magic and legacy of Neil Diamond, as Nearly Neil brings his extraordinary talent to Airlie Beach with an afternoon of classic hits. Be sure to book your table by scanning the QR Code to reserve your spot today!
