Light Party Offers Families An Alternative On October 31

Light Party Offers Families An Alternative On October 31

Mackay families are invited to enjoy an evening of activities, entertainment and history at the free Light Party at Bluewater Quay on October 31st. Running from 4pm to 9pm, the family-friendly community event offers an alternative to Halloween, with children encouraged to dress as their favourite light-themed or positive characters. This year’s program will include two 30-minute freestyle BMX performances by JC Action Sport, scheduled for 5.30pm and 7.30pm, alongside live entertainment, food trucks and free activities for children. Organisers said the event would combine fun with opportunities for families to learn about historical figures and events associated with the 31st of October. These include William Wilberforce, who was sworn into Parliament on the 31st October and went on to see slavery abolished in 1833, and the Australian Light Horsemen, whose charge at Beersheba during World War I took place on the same date. The program will also explore Martin Luther, who posted his 95 Theses on October 31st, an event associated with the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, and George Müller, who came to faith on the same date and cared for about 10,000 orphans throughout his lifetime. Children can discover these stories through hands-on activities, with fortress building, weaving, horse racing, printing, cookie decorating, light-themed craft creations and fishing among the options on offer. The event aims to bring families together for an evening of entertainment, creativity and learning, with activities designed to engage children of different ages. With free activities and live performances planned throughout the evening, families can drop by Bluewater Quay and take part in the celebrations. The Light Party will run from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 31st October, at Bluewater Quay, Mackay. Entry and children’s activities are free, with food available from food trucks. Last year’s Light Party brought Mackay families together at Bluewater Quay for an evening of free activities, entertainment and historical storytelling as an alternative to Halloween. Musical Chairs: Peta Richards

Musical Chairs: Peta Richards

BY GEORGIA MCDONALD Welcome back to the musical hot seat. This week we sat with Peta Richards, whose love of country music has taken her from the rodeo circuit to the Whitsundays, where she continues to perform and share her love for music with the community. Music has been part of Peta's life since the age of eight. She taught herself guitar, began writing her own songs and eventually formed a band with her cousins called Shiraz. “There was a big family bond with music,” she reflected. Shiraz travelled throughout western Queensland, performing at rodeos and camel races, as well as appearing as guest artists for country music performers Adam Brand and Beccy Cole. They also took home the Best Overall Prize at the Charters Towers Country Music Festival in 2008. Having six children meant Peta's performing days slowed down, but music was never something she walked away from completely. After moving to the Whitsundays, Peta continued performing while putting down roots in the local music scene. In 2023, she joined forces with three partners to open local karaoke bar, Lola's. One of the things Peta loves most is seeing people come out of their shells and watching shy singers grow in confidence on stage. While Peta has spent years performing covers, she's now stepping into a new chapter by releasing her own original music. Her debut single, Don't Send Me No Roses, came out in June and tells the story of betrayal and reaching the point where enough is enough. Peta also performs at venues around the Whitsundays, with her own original songs on the setlist, and is set to take to the stage at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music. Despite years of performing, Peta still gets the same enjoyment out of getting on stage. While playing in a band has its perks, performing solo means all eyes are on her, which can be both nerve-racking and rewarding. For Peta, there's nothing better than seeing a crowd enjoying themselves and connecting with the music. When it comes to her own music taste, Peta is still a country girl at heart, with Shania Twain remaining a longtime favourite. She's also loving newer artists like Ella Langley, but for Peta, music is about more than just a catchy tune, with the right song having the ability to lift someone up when they need it most. With country music, Peta has a love for the lyrics: “They actually really tell stories.” It's something she's hoping to capture in her upcoming release, Let's Make a Stand, which encourages people to reach out and support those who may be struggling. The song is also a family affair, with her daughter contributing backing vocals and harmonies. With the Airlie Beach Festival of Music just around the corner, Peta is looking forward to sharing her original music with the crowd. After years of performing covers around the Whitsundays, it's an exciting opportunity to showcase her songwriting. And with more original music on the way, there's plenty more to come from Peta! Song Recommendation For This Week: Upcoming Release: Let’s Make a Stand – Peta Richards What? Airlie Beach Festival Of Music Where? Airlie Beach When? 6-8th November

Songwriter Festival Tuning It Up For 2027

Songwriter Festival Tuning It Up For 2027

Fresh songs and a chance to learn from some of Australia’s leading songwriters will take centre stage when the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival returns for its sixth year. The festival returns from June 2–6, 2027, with Saturday June 5 set aside for music lovers to join the fun at the Whitsunday Sailing Club through workshops and live performances. The daytime Songwriting Summit and workshops will welcome emerging and experienced songwriters, along with anyone curious about how songs come together. Visitors can hear from professional songwriter mentors about their craft, while local writers will have opportunities to showcase their own work. For event organizer Karen Jacobsen, the appeal is giving people a glimpse into a process they might rarely consider when listening to their favourite music. “We demystify that by letting people behind the curtain,” she said. “It's a true celebration of the art and craft of writing songs and being together with other people who are either doing that or love original music. “That's something we're really proud of, preserving that craft of songwriting.” Six professional songwriters will come together at Pinnacles Airlie Beach for the festival’s residency, with audiences later hearing how the songs took shape by enjoying live performances of the newly written material. “It's a very exciting, uplifting event we have because, again, it's just that palpable experience of witnessing brand new creative work performed for the first time,” Karen said. The 2027 lineup is yet to be announced, with artist announcements and ticket updates being shared through the Whitsundays Arts Festival website. Photo caption: WSF 2023 Songwriter Workshop. Photo of the Week

It’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit, and Sparkles the guinea pig is already joining the fun, with a name that makes this week’s winning photo a perfect match for the theme ‘Glitter and Sparkles’. Photographed by Shannon Faletti, her daughter’s guinea pig is bringing some festive cheer to the Whitsundays Amateur Photographers Facebook group. The gleam of the Christmas baubles and glitter scattered around the tree give Sparkles’ festive setting an extra touch of shimmer, while the Santa ensemble makes quite the fashion statement. Congratulations to Shannon for sharing such a sweet photo, and to Sparkles for what looks like a really successful photoshoot! Next week's theme, eyes. Thank you to everyone in the Whitsundays Amateur Photographers Facebook group for sharing another wonderful collection of images.

Whitsundays Writers Festival Set To Inspire And Delight

February 20, 2025

After a wildly successful return in 2024, this year the Whitsundays Writers Festival promises an immersive celebration for writers, readers, and lovers of story. With an exciting line-up of Australian authors, this September event will build on last year’s success and become a cornerstone in the national cultural calendar.

In 2024, the Whitsundays welcomed Miles Franklin Award winner Shankari Chandran, alongside bestselling and award-winning literary figures including Garry Disher, Sally Hepworth, Kristy Manning, Graeme Simsion, Nick Earls and Christos Tsiolkas. The enthusiasm of authors and readers alike inspired the festival committee to ensure a 2025 Whitsundays Writers Festival would take place, and preparations are well underway.

Karen Jacobsen, the Festival Chair, expressed her excitement, stating, “The feedback from the 2024 festival was off the charts, and bringing beloved authors to the Whitsundays is a golden opportunity for regional Queensland to connect and learn from some of our greatest writers.”

The 2025 festival has taken the best from 2024 and enhanced events to provide an even more wonderful experience for attendees and participants. The festival, spanning three days, will feature international bestselling and award-winning Australian authors and local writers. With interactive workshops, panel discussions, and author talks on Saturday and Sunday really get to know these literary heroes. With a commitment to highlighting our local regional authors, those interested in joining us are encouraged to connect with the festival through: whitsundayswriters.com

The program also includes special events like Friday evening opening with a Love Letter to Queensland. Saturday evening Poetry Karaoke at Whisper Bar, Saturday Big Book Club High Tea at the Rainbow Cafe, and the Local Author Long Lunch on Sunday at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, our major venue partner.

“This event will bring together creative minds in the picturesque setting of the Whitsundays. What better place to immerse yourself in the brilliance of Australian literature?” said Karen. “I highly recommend securing your festival pass and booking accommodation early to fully enjoy the wonders of the Whitsundays while indulging in the myriad of events the festival has to offer.”

Make sure to mark your calendars for this unforgettable literary experience and stay tuned for further exciting announcements and author profiles as the festival approaches!

A BOMBASTIC ISLAND SHOW IS BUSTING THROUGH THE PUB Tropical Tunes And Rocking Reggae At The Airlie Beach Hotel

February 13, 2025

Bustamento and Nicky Bomba are bringing their tropical Carribean classics back to Airlie Beach Hotel for two great, booty-swaying free shows. The show on Saturday will kick off the weekend with tropical vibes featuring Bustamento’s ARIA nominated first album: Intrepid Adventures to the Lost Riddim islands! Then on Sunday, Nicky Bomba and Bustamento will be bringing Bob Marley and The Wailers back to the beach with their ONE LOVE tribute filled with reggae classics.
This team up of Nicky Bomba, the Jon Butler Trio and members of the Melbourne Ska Orchestra a.k.a the brilliant team behind Bustamento. A band who blends the best beats and instrument to create a performance that has been described as Byron Bay Boogaloo meets African horn snappin' goodness, Glastonbury mud shuffles with a New Orleans blood transfusion and Jamaican Reggae Bootysway with a hot Trinidadian Sauce. So, if you're looking for a show that will bring Calypso love songs served on the soundwaves of the steel pan drum then these shows are not to be missed as Nicky says the shows are all about the different meanings and the stories behind the songs.
“We take it back to the music that was happening in the island of Jamaica and the Caribbean before Marley was famous.” and it’s, “Magnificent music that's that still stands the test of time and still as relevant today as it was then.”
With this toe-tapping tropical backing it's time to "Dance boy, Dance!” and get up on that dance floor!  Nicky Bomba’s comical personality truly shines when the band’s all together making music and sharing that sunshine and joy with the locals. It’s all about making people happy while savouring the music they’re cooking up in their groovy kitchen.
“The music we play is actually quite universal. It feels to all demographics, and you know, just the more we play that music, the more we realize, how universal it is”
Nicky and his crew are no strangers to the Whitsundays, and they’ll be up in Airlie Beach celebrating this February what would have been Bob Marleys 80th birthday. They plan on going to the lagoon for barbeques, and bike riding is on the agenda while visiting some good friends up here from Melbourne.
It will be two dynamic shows of musical journeys with fantastic connections as they perform hits from their own album on Saturday and tracks from Marley’s own amazing collection on Sunday. Enjoy a beer and a boogie as Nicky Bomba and Bustamento speaks to the uplifting connection between music and your soul on this colourful Caribbean weekend. Koi Kites Bring Colour And Culture Back To Mackay's City Heart

January 30, 2025

Over the last few weeks, Mackay's city heart has undergone a major transformation, with the Mky City Heart Collective leading efforts to revitalise the region. This initiative celebrates the city’s rich history, particularly its once-thriving Chinatown, by blending art, culture, and community to breathe new life into downtown Mackay.

Inspired by the once-thriving Chinatown district between Wellington and Macalister streets from the 1880s to the 1930s, the project highlights this important hub for market gardens and Asian grocers. Despite its significance, this chapter of Mackay's history remains largely unknown to many, and that’s why the Mky City Heart Collective is working hard to bring this forgotten history back to life.

Local business owners, artists, and volunteers have teamed up to create unique experiences for the community that blend Mackay's history with modern-day culture. Among the highlights is a stunning installation of traditional Koi kites, created by the community and on display as part of the celebrations.

These kites, along with other stunning art pieces, aim to acknowledge the importance of Chinatown while injecting fresh energy, colour, and creativity into the city.

Ally Blines, owner of Let The Children Play Toyshop, is one of the many local business owners contributing to this exciting initiative.

"The kites are part of a bigger project," she explains.

Ally has been hosting kite-making workshops at Let The Children Play Toyshop during the school holidays, where children can create their own Koi kites that will be featured in the installation.

"We did some workshops in-store during the school holidays where the kids could make kites and they're being used in the installation and then they can come and collect them when it's all over.

“It’s about making people aware that this part of town used to be part of Mackay’s Chinatown,” she shares.

“A lot of people don’t realise that we had a Chinatown or what an important part it played in the development of the city.”

As part of the Mky City Heart Collective, Ally is just one member of a passionate group of volunteers, business owners, and artists all working together to show that the city heart is far from "dead."

"We all work together…there's actually a lot happening here in the city heart and we just want people to know that our town is alive and it’s such a nice community to be involved in!”

Vibrant Events Await In 2025 With Mackay Isaac Tourism's “Keep Up” Campaign

January 30, 2025

Last Tuesday, the Mackay Isaac Region kicked off 2025 with the launch of its bold new destination events campaign, “Keep Up.”

The campaign, unveiled by Mackay Isaac Tourism, aims to inspire visitors to explore the region’s exciting adventures, vibrant events, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

“Keep Up” encourages travellers of all ages to embrace the spirit of discovery and connection throughout the Mackay Isaac Region.

Mackay Isaac Tourism CEO Jeff Stewart-Harris said that the region's events calendar competes with those of neighbouring destinations, making it the ideal time to launch a campaign centred around major events.

"Events provide the opportunity for engagement with a broad audience who have the propensity to stay in region for longer or to visit in non-peak periods,” Mr Stewart-Harris said.

“‘Keep Up’ challenges travellers to match the vibrant rhythm of Mackay Isaac, where there's always something new to explore.

"From national sporting events like Mackay Marina Run and Fox Superflow to cultural festivals like the Mackay Festival of Arts and St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, this campaign highlights the pioneering spirit that defines our region."

In the year ending June 2024, the Mackay Isaac Region welcomed 1.2 million overnight visitors - a 3.7 per cent increase - which includes a doubling in leisure visitation (up 19.3 per cent) since 2019, with spending continuing to surge over the same period to $803.1 million (up 51.3 per cent).

"What's especially exciting is the strong growth in holiday visitors, complementing our traditionally robust business visitor sector," Mr Stewart-Harris added.

"This campaign is about momentum.

“We want travellers to feel the thrill of what's next, encouraging them to stay longer and keep discovering the incredible moments that make Mackay Isaac unforgettable.

"Whether you're cheering at a sports event, hiking through lush rainforest trails, or dancing the night away at a festival, the “Keep Up” campaign captures the essence of what makes our region so special.”

Are you ready to "Keep Up”? Explore everything the Mackay Isaac Region has to offer at mackayisaac.com/whats-on.

This campaign has been made possible through funding support from the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland.
