Sea Eagles Tame The Tigers

Sea Eagles Tame The Tigers

The Whitsunday Sea Eagles made the trip to Bakers Creek on the weekend to take on the North Mackay Saints and the Bakers Creek Tigers, with all teams showcasing plenty of determination and competitive spirit throughout the day. The Under 13s were first into action against the Saints and produced a strong performance. After a hard-fought opening three quarters, the Sea Eagles trailed by just two points heading into the final term, keeping themselves firmly in the contest. Despite their efforts, the Saints managed to pull away late, with the match finishing 20-39. The Under 15s continued their impressive season with another dominant victory over the Saints. Controlling the game from start to finish, the Sea Eagles piled on 12 goals and 15 behinds while keeping their opponents to just two goals. Their teamwork, skill, and relentless pressure were on full display as they secured another convincing win 72-12 and further strengthened their position as one of the competition's top teams. The women's side faced a tough challenge against the Bakers Creek Tigers. The Sea Eagles fought hard and matched the Tigers aggression and determination, keeping the margin within three goals throughout the game. The players fought hard at every contest and never stopped competing. However, fatigue began to take its toll in the final quarter, allowing the Tigers to kick four late goals and extend the final margin to 0-43. The senior men's match provided plenty of excitement for supporters. The Sea Eagles burst out the gates in the opening quarter, dominating early play to establish a 15-0 lead at the first break. Carrying that momentum throughout the day, the men continued to work hard around the ground and were rewarded with a strong 52-25 victory over the Tigers. It was a complete team performance and a fitting way to finish a successful day for the club. Get down to The Nest this Saturday 27th June for Sponsor Appreciation Day and cheer on your Whitsunday Sea Eagles as they take on the Moranbah Bulldogs, Swagpies, and Magpies in a huge day of footy action. The junior fixtures kick off from 10:40am, showcasing the club's rising stars, before the senior teams take centre stage in what promises to be an exciting evening of football, with the Senior Women starting at 3:20pm and the Senior Men finishing under lights. Bring the family, wear your Sea Eagles colours, and get behind your local teams as they battle it out on home turf. We can't wait to see you at The Nest! February 15, 2024

In a massive signing coup, Mackay Basketball are thrilled to announce that U.S import player Sam Haiby, will join the McDonald’s Mackay Meteorettes roster for the 2024 NBL1 season.

24-year-old Haiby will head to the Sugar City in March for her first professional playing contract, following a stellar basketball career at the University of Nebraska.

In 2021, the dynamic guard was named the Nebraska Most Valuable Player and earned All-Big Ten Second Team honours.

Gun Mackay Forward Chases NRL Dream With Tigers

February 15, 2024

Emerging Mackay rugby league forward Nehemiah Wuatai-Davis can realise his
childhood dream of playing in the NRL after signing a two year contract with
the Wests Tigers.

The rampaging 18-year-old Mackay Magpies prop is part of Benji Marshall¹s
new breed of Tigers in 2024 after impressing the club¹s talent scouts with
powerhouse performances in the Queensland junior development system.

Wuatai-Davis, a teak tough front rower with a huge motor, was named in the
Balmain S.G Ball squad that will compete in this year¹s Under 19 NSWRL
junior representative series.

He joins the Tigers after a decade with his beloved junior Magpies that
achieved tremendous success in the Mackay Junior League competition.
The former Mackay State High School student starred in the Magpies’
premiership-winning Under 20s team last season that defeated rivals Brothers
26-18 in the Grand Final at BB Print Stadium.

Strong-running Miah was one of the best players on ground with the deserved
trophy win capping a fruitful Junior League career for the talented forward.
He joined the club after his family relocated to Mackay from Townsville and
figured prominently as a back rower in the Magpies’ champion teams that won
the Laurie Spina Under 11 Shield; Jason Hetherington Cup (Under 12s) and the
Under 13s Mackay premiership and Nate Myles Cup double under the tutelage of
leading junior coach Scott Thorpe.

A fierce competitor and punishing defender, Miah represented Capricornia
Schoolboys and was part of the Mackay Cutters Junior Pathways squads.
Prominent Magpies coach Scott Thorburn predicts a bright future for the
promising front rower.

“Miah is tough and resilient with the power and skills to go a long way,”
revealed Thorburn.

“He shows a great attitude to training with a strong work ethic and now has
a tremendous opportunity to impress the likes of Benji Marshall and his
Tigers’ coaching staff,” he added.

Sailing On High Tides

February 15, 2024

Bowen’s Port Denison Sailing Club had its first 2024 race and training session on Sunday the 11th of February, with sailors of all ages gathering together on the water.

Making the most of the extreme high tide, the Green Fleet junior sailors had a practise session, sailing a long leg from the clubrooms on the Bowen foreshore towards the Big Mango and homeward again. Georgia Jeffrey, age 7, recently graduated from the beginner learn to sail programme run at PDSC and is enjoying sailing independently. She is well known among the other sailors for her sense of fun and smile every time she is on the water. Georgia’s highlight of the day was capsizing early on and righting the boat with a little assistance from instructor and coach Gary Bruce.

Six junior sailors in Optimists, two teenagers in Lasers and three Windsurfers lined up for the windward leeward races which followed. Three season warm up races were conducted in the wavy 10 – 15 knot conditions to ease participants back into the racing calendar. The Green Fleet participants joined coach Gary on the coach boat to follow the race and learn by watching the more experienced children sailing their Optimists. Dave Martin, PDSC instructor, fresh from supporting his son Reid at the 2024 Musto Australian Optimist Championships in January in South Australia, cast his eye to the Optimist fleet on the water, giving them helpful tips for improvement.

Long term PDSC member Matt Bath stated that he was excited to be back on the water for 2024 and racing his Windsurfer LT.

PDSC is a completely volunteer run club and would like to extend its thanks to the canteen volunteers for keeping members well fed and to the on shore and on water volunteers who ensure the weekend activities run smoothly.

The next Bowen racing session is Sunday the 25th February and all members and affiliated club sailors are warmly welcomed.  Please see the Port Denison Sailing Club Facebook page for further details.

VALE – ASHLEE KNIGHT

February 8, 2024

The bowls community and wider Mackay community was saddened to hear of the passing of Ashlee Knight last month. Ashlee was diagnosed with an optic nerve glioma and intercranial hypotension on 27th July, 2020.

Chemotherapy for Ashlee included completing twelve cycles over roughly what was an arduous eleven months of treatment.

During this period, Ashlee was on track to completing and graduating from her final days of Year 12, even finishing her English assessment hours after treatment, against her doctors’ advice.

Ashlee went on to graduate with flying colours at the top of her class, even continuing to play lawn bowls for the district, where she was selected for the Queensland Junior Squad.

Ashlee represented the QLD U25 Team in 2022 and 2023 versus NSW, won the QLD Secondary Schools Cup in 2019, was runner up in the QLD U18 Girls Singles in 2021 and was an inaugural member of the 2023 QLD High Performance Academy.

Condolences to Ashlee’s family and close friends.
