Airlie Beach Bowls Club News 15th May

Airlie Beach Bowls Club News 15th May

The week started on Tuesday with the continuation of Women’s Pairs and social bowls, which saw skipper David Bradley with lead Regan Maher become the pairs winners of the day. Wednesday afternoon social bowls had 28 participants, and the highest score of the day went to the team of skipper Noel Crosbie with lead Mervyn Stewart, who won 32–19 over skipper Phil O'Brien and Desmond Ballance. Wednesday night Business House Bowls saw about 30 bowlers attend, run by Bob and Yvonne Spees, with results to be announced next week. Friday afternoon saw the arrival of 16 bowlers from the Christian College, and what a talented group they are. Mr Richardson, Aishmeen Sandhu, and Shaniah Saremo are an awesome pairs team and could become very successful future representative bowlers if they choose to pursue the sport. Cooper Wilde is also a very talented sportsman and a fantastic asset to the school. Special mention must also go to Ryan Clark and Elliana Langshore, who could develop into excellent bowlers if they continue to apply themselves and build their skills. This program will give all the students valuable lessons in teamwork and demonstrate what sport can do for classroom development and success in understanding subjects that may have previously seemed difficult. We look forward to continuing to work with the students. Saturday morning Scroungers saw the last spot for the afternoon finals up for grabs, and John Matterson, who has just returned to the club after major heart surgery, proved he is still a very good bowler by winning the final spot against Andy McDougall and Tony Whitehorn. The previous winners lined up for the final: Des Ballance, Maureen Barnard, David Cleary, Alan Pershouse, John Askew, Betty and Tony Whitehorn, Dennis Donadelli, and, to everyone’s surprise and delight, John Matterson. He continued his brilliant form, winning the coveted trophy in the final. Sunday afternoon’s social bowls saw two games of pairs and one game of triples. Liz and Arthur McManus teamed up with Des Ballance and won 26–15 over Stacey Hadlow’s team of Lou Rogan and Alma Rose Mawson. However, the winners of the day, with the lowest winning margin drawn out by Club Manager Fiona Greener, were the team of “Take the Money Tony” Whitehorn with Dawn Dowell, who won 21–20 over skipper Margo Stanley and Brett Simpson. The men’s singles in A Grade, B Grade, and Seniors have now reached the semi-finals, with results to be published soon. Men’s and Women’s Pennants also commence this weekend. Free lessons continue on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and all are welcome. John Askew presents John Matterson with his Scroungers Trophy after his well-deserved win. Whitsunday Weightlifting Club Delivers Successful Parabench Competition at NQ Games 2026

Whitsunday Weightlifting Club Delivers Successful Parabench Competition at NQ Games 2026

Whitsunday Weightlifting Club wrapped up a successful Parabench Development Competition last weekend as part of the 2026 North Queensland Games, with four athletes competing across the age and ability spectrum in what proved to be an inspiring day of sport at St Catherines Catholic College in Proserpine. Held on Saturday 2 May and run in partnership with Para Powerlifting Australia, the event drew competitors from across the region — from Townsville to Mackay — ranging in age from 21 to 64 years. The standard of lifting impressed all in attendance, with athletes at very different stages of their para-sport journey each delivering standout performances. Taking out first place in the women's division was Australian representative Trish Wallace from Townsville, who benched an impressive 64kg. Local para-athlete Di Jackson claimed second place with a 33kg lift, while first-time competitor Sigrid Eitler took third with 30kg — a remarkable debut on the competition platform. In the men's division, Mackay athlete Bryce Jackson took first place with a 62kg bench. Club founder, president and head coach Leanne Knox said the day exceeded expectations. "Although it was a small competition, it helped raise awareness of our club's capacity to train people with all kinds of disabilities," she said. "There is a place for everyone in our club." Knox is encouraging anyone living with movement limitations or other disabilities — as well as carers — to reach out and explore how strength training can benefit their physical, mental and social wellness. The club also celebrated a significant equipment milestone, with a specialist bench built thanks to local business Airlie Sail and Shade (Paul Mitchell) and club member Ian Cordell, alongside a bench received through the Para Uplift Program via the Australian Institute of Sport. With competitors eyeing national and international competition, the future looks bright for para-sport in the Whitsundays. To find out more, contact Whitsunday Weightlifting Club on 0411 199 427. Whitsundays Fire on All Fronts in High-Scoring Weekend (Soccer)

May 7, 2026

FQPL3 Women Photo supplied

Whitsundays delivered an impressive weekend of results across all three grades, recording convincing wins in the Premier Women, U23 Men and Premier Men competitions.

The FQPL3 Premier Women showed resilience after a slow start against Country United, conceding early to trail 1–0. Veneesha Robertson sparked the comeback with a superb long-range strike into the top corner to level the scores at 1–1 heading into the break. Bre Campbell then took control in the second half, scoring twice to secure a 3–1 victory. Sarah Chilton led the line strongly, Keely Salter anchored the defence, and the club’s younger players continued to grow in confidence at senior level.

The U23 Men entered their clash against City Brothers knowing a win would keep them on top of the table, and they delivered with a composed 2–0 performance. After a scoreless first half, where Kai Savy’s runs in behind caused constant problems, the breakthrough came via a penalty calmly converted by Aaron Kinsella. Arman Sabzgolin added a second to seal the result and ensure Whitsundays remained at the summit.

The FQPL3 Premier Men rounded out the weekend with a dominant 8–3 win over City Brothers. Ethan Rose opened the scoring shortly after seeing his early penalty saved and went on to complete back-to-back hat-tricks. Pepe Perea’s pressing created another goal before half-time, the ever-dangerous Reef Peel added two more and Max O’Keefe and Sam Frumento both also found the net in a powerful attacking display. Another good win for our Premier Men as they settle into the season.

Last Saturday, a grand opening took place for the new Bowen Seagulls Rugby League Clubhouse. Both Federal MP for Dawson Andrew Willcox and Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins were in attendance for the special event.

“This is a fantastic addition to the Seagulls, and I congratulate everyone for all the hard work invested to bring this to fruition,” Mr Willcox said.

Both MP Willcox and Mayor Collins helped to cut the ribbon alongside the enthusiastic players.

“Along with cutting the ribbon to celebrate this achievement, the club committee has done an amazing job of putting together a trip down memory lane, showcasing photographers, football jerseys and memorabilia from years gone by.

As a ‘Bowen boy’ who played league and run a team where his son played, Mr Willcox expressed immense pride at the occasion.

“It was real treat to spend time looking through our towns footy history.”

What a weekend for the Whitsunday Sea Eagles Senior Men! After an unfortunate forfeit from the Bakers Creek Tigers women’s side, all eyes turned to the men to deliver a win for the home crowd.

It was a hard-fought battle from the first bounce to the final siren, with both teams going stride for stride in a tight contest.

The intensity never dropped, as each side attacked the ball with hunger and determination, refusing to give an inch.

In the end, it was the Sea Eagles who rose to the occasion, holding their nerve and finishing strong to claim the win by a solitary point in front of their home crowd.

With the final score 69-68 the Sea Eagles way, Hudson McGregor was awarded the best on ground honours for his bag of five goals in trying conditions.

This Saturday the 9th of May the Sea Eagles head down to Rodger’s Oval in Mackay to battle it out with the Eastern Swans. Will our teams come out victorious? Be there and find out!

Among those recognised on the day were Kayne Higgins (cross country), Adelaide Sanders and Eli Gerrand (football and futsal), Axel Yuskan, Evelyn Doherty, Declan Dichiera, Eloise Chegwidden, Lucas Korosec, Jax Clayworth and Zane Clayworth (swimming), Reid and Rory Martin (sailing), and Ben Hope (cricket).

Council also paid tribute to several athletes who were unable to attend but have achieved outstanding results. The Junior Elite Athletes initiative continues to play an important role in supporting the region’s emerging talent, helping athletes take the next step in their sporting journeys.

Foley Shield Glory

May 7, 2026

Photo supplied

The 2026 Foley Shield was played over the weekend in Cairns, with well over 80 years worth of history in our region. The Foley Shield is the epitome of representative rugby league in North Queensland.

With five of our local Whitsunday Brahman men selected for the Mackay Sea Eagles side, including Sam Moorhouse, Adam Butterill, Darcy Turner and Hawaiike Annandale as players, and Harley Bateup as men’s assistant coach working beside the ever-talented former NRL player Kane Linnett, the club was proudly represented. Eddy Cates was also selected as women’s assistant coach, with Shirley Luke earning selection in the women’s team.

Our troops set to Cairns with one mission in mind — to make a statement.

The men walked away with a win in their opening game on Saturday against a favoured Cairns side, 24–16. In an extremely close match, they played their cards right and came out on top. This was followed by the Mackay Sea Eagles women’s team, who defeated Cairns 24–4. Both teams then faced off later on Saturday against last year’s big threat, Townsville.

The men were down at half time but refused to count themselves out. They came back hard in the second half, taking on the defence with confidence and control. Mackay turned the tables to secure an incredible 32–26 victory, claiming the 2026 Foley Shield in what was a massive upset over the reigning champions.

Unfortunately, the women’s side were unable to overcome a strong Townsville outfit, going down 20–10. Despite the result, the team held their heads high, proud of their selections and the opportunity to represent, while enjoying a memorable weekend away in Cairns.

The Mackay Sea Eagles men’s team celebrated their milestone win on the journey home, holding the trophy high and soaking in a well-earned victory. Mackay had not lifted the Foley Shield since 2021, making the achievement even more special.

Coach Kane Linnett, along with his players and staff, have every reason to be proud. The shield has returned home to Mackay — and if this performance is anything to go by, it may be there to stay for some time.

Nine competitors from the Northern Beaches Shito-Ryu Karate Dojo returned home with an impressive 29 medalsafter competing at the Traditional Japanese Karate National Championships in Adelaide recently.

For some competitors it was their first ever tournament and first medal, while others stepped up into new and far more challenging divisions.

After months of intense training and weekends dedicated to refining their skills, each team member demonstrated strong technique and commitment to their martial art. With Sensei Helle also working as a judge, the dojo maintains a high training standard that was clearly reflected in the team’s results.

Preparation continued even after arriving in Adelaide, with athletes taking part in beach training sessions and visiting a local dojo as guests.

The results proved to be a family affair.

Tim claimed one gold and one bronze medal, while Nicky earned one gold, one silver and two bronze. 10-year-old Phoenix collected two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Martha celebrated her first ever competition and medal haul with one gold and two bronze, while her son Kaito secured two gold and one bronze.

The U23s ran rampant in an 8–2 win, with Kai Savy bagging a hat-trick alongside goals from Pepe Perea, Sebastian Shand, Sam Frumento (2) and Ben Seago. The Premiers followed with an equally emphatic 8–1 victory, Ethan Rose leading the charge with a hat-trick. Further goals from Thomas Farnsworth, Reef Peel, Max O’Keefe and Mikey Nash sealed a commanding result.

Our U14/15 squads showed strong character on Sunday. U14/15 Div 1 fought back to claim a 6–2 win over Dolphins, while the U14/15 FQPL side battled hard but went down 2–1 despite a late penalty from Nick Moranino.

The U13s also impressed, with a solid defensive display from the back line the U13 FQPL team securing a composed 2–0 win against Country United, with goals from Jace Hickey and Connor Miller. The U13 Div 1 put in a strong effort but conceded a 5–3 loss against Magpies Black.

A weekend showcasing resilience, growth and exciting football across every age group.
