Girls Only Cricket Hub To Launch February 10

January 30, 2025

The Girls Only Hub program for 5-10-year-olds is set to begin on February 10, offering young girls an exciting opportunity to explore cricket in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Led by female coaches, the program focuses on building confidence, skills, and a love for the sport in a space designed just for girls.

Great Barrier Reef Arena Sports Development Officer Mel Dwyer highlighted the importance of such initiatives, stating, “The girls-only program is a great opportunity for girls to come and experience cricket in a safe and inclusive environment.

“They can feel comfortable and confident without the pressures that sometimes arise in co-ed settings. It ensures that girls have a space where they can thrive and enjoy the sport.

Ms Dwyer also noted the participants' enthusiasm, saying, “The girls love being coached by older juniors who play in our local comps.

“Nothing is off limits; dancing, cartwheels and lots of other fun things are added into the skill-based sessions. Girls rock up with the biggest smiles, wanting to tell me about doing their bowling homework, suggesting a warm-up activity and telling me how much they love cricket.”

Junior cricket has already kicked off, with Stage 1, 2, and 3 teams back in action from January 18. The race to the semi-finals on February 15 is heating up, with teams vying for spots. Masters Blasters also resumed on January 22, alongside the GBR Rays Blaster Hub Program, which continues for boys and girls on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30pm.

Registrations for the Girls Only Hub program are now open via www.playhq.com/cricket-australia/register/8c7bdd

Mackay Road Runners Celebrate Shawn’s Summer Biathlon Series On Australia Day

January 30, 2025

The 2024/2025 Shawn’s Summer Biathlon Splash & Dash Series concluded on Australia Day, with athletes and volunteers coming together to honour former Mackay Road Runners champion Shawn Claydon, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2018. Shawn’s legacy was celebrated with the attendance of his sister, Sharon Stewart-Harris, and her husband, Jeff, who supported the event.

Held as an off-season training opportunity, the series welcomed not only club members but also newcomers and those seeking a fun and informal swim/run experience.

The series finale was well-attended, even as many Tri-Activ8 athletes competed in the Moranbah Aquathon on the same day. Awards were presented to top performers, with Nikki Giles named the overall winner for track and pool laps, though she was unable to attend the final event. Random draw prizes, including 2025 calendars featuring series photos, added to the fun of the finale.

Looking ahead, the Mackay Road Runners formal 2025 season kicks off on Sunday, January 16, with the club set to appear at the Mackay Regional Council Sports Expo on Sunday, January 9.

As summer’s oppressive humidity continues, the club reminds everyone to stay hydrated and maintain sensible training schedules. Meanwhile, an informal social 5/10km run will be held this Sunday at 4:30pm, starting from the Bluewater Quay. Participants are welcome to join free of charge, with post-run refreshments available for purchase at the Red Dog. Bring your own hydration and energy needs, and enjoy the camaraderie of Mackay’s running community!

January 30, 2025

The Cannonvale Cannons hosted their highly anticipated Short Course Transition Meet over the weekend, attracting 195 swimmers from 18 clubs across North Queensland. The event showcased exceptional talent and sportsmanship, despite challenging weather conditions.

Day 1 tested swimmers and spectators alike with intense heat and humidity and day 2 brought storms that delayed proceedings and ultimately forced an early finish due to a second round of severe weather. Time trials were held on the morning of day 2 of competition for swimmers wanting one last effort to achieve times, with both Millie Groom and Matilda Nicholes giving exceptional performances to earn their final times. A special shoutout goes to Tyler Bennett, Ella Bounden, Zane Clayworth, Declan Dichiera, Ruby Harland, Billie Jamieson, Gracie Laguna, Pippa Laguna, Isabella Pisaniello, and Zachary Trefz for achieving personal bests in every one of their individual events.

A special note of farewell to Don Algie, who has been competing as a Cannon since the age of six. This carnival marked his final representation for the club as he now departs for boarding school. The Cannons wish him the very best of luck and thank him for the boundless energy he brought to training, club nights, and regional and state events. Good luck, Donnie!

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, 23 determined players participated in this week’s Stableford competition. The day was marked by remarkable scores, even as players contended with heavy rain and soggy conditions across the course.

In the Ladies' division, Jenny Hounsell delivered an outstanding performance to claim victory with 40 points. Runner-up honors went to Tina Badenhorst, who finished with 31 points on a countback. The rundown included Paula McQuat (31 points), Tiina Randmae (29 points), and Elspeth Scotford (28 points).

For the Men, John Oates was in fine form, securing the win with an impressive 42 points, building on his Monthly Medal triumph last week. Gerald Lovell followed closely, finishing runner-up with 41 points. The rundown featured strong performances from Vic Feldman (40 points), Colin Hounsell (38 points), Gary Scotford (36 points), Laurie Dakin (35 points), David Woods (34 points), and Ken Granger (32 points).

Pin shots were expertly claimed by Ladies players Jenny Hounsell (2), Robyn Witham (2), and Tina Badenhorst, while the Men’s pin shots went to John Oates (2), John Roser (2), Ken Granger, and Trevor Peroz.

Chip-ins were a highlight, with contributions from Jenny and Colin Hounsell, Neil Cawthorne, John Oates, Gary Scotford (2), and Peter Lindsay.

The Membership Jackpot Draw remains unclaimed and will roll over to $40 next week. John Roser, however, took home the raffle prize of a $50 MBW voucher.

Next week’s competition will be another Stableford event. Good luck to all!

Last weekend saw eight milestone recipients celebrated at Mackay parkrun’s latest event.
Achieving 100-finish milestones were Teresa Hackney, Isabelle Cahill, and Kate Mumford.

Reaching the 50-finish milestone were Shelby Freidman, Michael Davidson, Georgie Wilson, and Traccee Ramsamy.

Trevor Hodgson was also recognised for his 25-volunteer milestone. Participants are encouraged to notify their Run Director before or after an event when they achieve a milestone.

Age Category Record Smashed

Robert Saliba set a new record in the VM70-74 age category, completing the course in an impressive 22 minutes and 44 seconds - beating the previous record by 1 minute and 5 seconds.

Earlier this month, 540 participants across the Mackay region embraced the parkrun spirit. With pacer week coming up, it’s the perfect time to get active and be part of this vibrant community initiative.

A representative from Mackay Park Run said “Get out and get active with us…Don't forget it's pacer week!

“All are welcome!”

Mackay parkrun is a free, timed 5km run/walk and is held every Saturday at 7 am at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. Alternatively, participants can join the Seaview parkrun at Bucasia Esplanade.
