Mackay Basketball’s Holiday Hoops Camp has recorded its biggest turnout yet, with more than 140 young participants taking part across two days of basketball during the school holidays. The program, the second Holiday Hoops Camp held this year, proved a standout success and set a new participation record for the organisation’s holiday camp series. It was said that across the two days, the courts were filled with activity, with plenty of smiles, new friendships forming and a strong sense of enjoyment evident among participants. Mackay Basketball also acknowledged its coaching group, who volunteered their time to run the sessions. Coaches were recognised for their efforts in teaching, encouraging and supporting players throughout the camp, helping deliver a positive experience for all involved. The Holiday Hoops Camp continues to be a popular feature on Mackay Basketball’s calendar, providing young players with the opportunity to spend time on court during the school holidays in a structured and supportive environment. This latest edition has now set a new benchmark for participation, with organisers describing the two-day event as an “unbelievable couple of days of hoops.” With record numbers achieved, the program has again highlighted the strong level of engagement with basketball across the Mackay region, as local families continue to support opportunities for young players to get involved in the sport. The camp concluded after two full days of activity, marking another successful instalment of Mackay Basketball’s ongoing holiday program. Photo source: Mackay basketball (Facebook)

Mackay's Sinkers have continued to make waves in the pool, celebrating strong performances at both the Australian Pool Rescue Championships in Perth and the Brisbane Southside Meet at Chandler. Peter T delivered an outstanding result at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships, returning to competition for the first time in 12 months to finish second overall in the 45–60 years age group. Competing across the three-day championships, Peter claimed an impressive medal tally of one gold and four silver medals, marking a successful return after an extended break from competition. Fellow Sinkers Nigel Dalton and Dan Stampa also impressed at the Brisbane Southside Meet at Chandler, producing a series of strong swims against a competitive field of 194 registered athletes. Nigel finished third in his age group, while Dan also secured third place in his respective age group. The pair briefly celebrated holding the Small Club Trophy before competition rules required the award to be presented to another club, with a minimum of three swimmers needed to qualify. With only two Sinkers competing, the trophy was officially handed to the Belgravia team during the Face-to-Face branch meeting. Both Nigel and Dan enjoyed some extra success away from the pool, each winning prizes in the event's multi-draw. The club congratulated all swimmers on their performances and thanked Brisbane Southside Meet organisers for hosting another successful competition. More than 20 runners turned out in challenging conditions at Eimeo Surf Club on the weekend, including the dedicated Mackay Tri Club members who, after completing their run, took to the ocean for a "little" 2km swim. The 5km and 10km courses featured plenty of challenging hills through the Blacks Beach, Dolphin Heads and Eimeo suburbs, providing an ideal hit-out for athletes preparing to taper ahead of the upcoming Gold Coast Running Festival and various Ironman events. Those who took shelter from the rain beneath the Surf Life Saving Control Watch Tower also enjoyed learning a few tricks of the trade about the delicate nature of the tummy, including checking that the milk is lactose free. A big thank you goes to Andrew Short for once again setting up a spectacular course. A legendary stalwart of the club, his ongoing contribution continues to be greatly appreciated. With a significant number of athletes away competing at out-of-town events, including the Gold Coast, Mackay Road Runners will instead host a social 5km and 10km run from Casu Jacks at Mackay Harbour this Sunday, starting at 7am. Participants are encouraged to bring along card or cash for breakfast, a cuppa and a chat, while celebrating the first run of the new financial year following 30 June 2026. All members and non-members are welcome to attend for a $2 race day fee. Please arrive by 6.50am for registration, the course briefing and club notices. Airlie Beach Bowls Club players did their club, the district, and zone seven proud at the State Champion of Club Champions at South Suburban in Mackay.
The pair of Betty Nicole and Carol Crosbie played outstanding bowls during the sectional rounds and were undefeated in their three games, beating Kawana Bowls Club 18-8, Suburban Townsville 19-16, and Boonooroo Bowls Club 20-16 to progress to the State Final.
They came up against the pair of 419 Australian-capped veteran Lynsey Clarke and Claire Turley, who has 66 caps for the country.
Betty and Carol started nervously, tied at seven all against their more fancied opponents throughout the early ends of the game.
Lynsey and Claire found their form and pushed ahead to a comfortable lead until Betty and Carol staged a late comeback but unfortunately ran out of ends and went down 27-20 in front of a very large crowd, becoming the states silver medallist’s.
Carol, who is undergoing intensive Chemotherapy, was drained substantially during the game, but, lived by our club’s motto: “Never Give Up, Never Give In, and Never Say Die.”
Also competing were our Mens Pairs whom finished 4th overall, missing out on the finals by one point only.
Armando Isgro also was selected as skipper for North Queensland versus South Queensland in Townsville played on the weekend.
Tuesday and Wednesday bowls and Business House Bowls were cancelled this week due to inclement weather.
Saturday morning Scroungers saw first round winners Merve Stewart, Maureen Barnard, Rick Galea, Gary Kiff, and Mark Mawson play off.
The final was played between Maureen Barnard and Mark Mawson, who overcame his tenacious opponent for the victory.
John Brown was the Group B winner of the day beating a star-studded field.
Sunday afternoon Social bowls had Tony Whitehorn with Mario De Martini at lead, Lu Rogan at second, and Rex Muller beat John Trembath’s team in a nail-biter.

Following on, Northern Beaches defeated RSL, Airlie Beach defeated Seaforth, Mackay defeated North Mackay, and in the afternoon, Proserpine defeated Sarina.
Through all games you could see the quality of shot delivery and decision making with so many of them being edge of your seat matches.
Sunday morning were the two Semi Finals, one where Proserpine defeated Northern Beaches and Marian defeated Mackay.
The Final between Proserpine and Marian started off being neck and neck with neither team getting to control the action. It is at this halfway point that things started to shift with Proserpine taking the upper hand.

Mercy/St Patrick’s College cricketers Jack Muller, Liam Newbery, Lachlan Evetts and Nick Beardmore (pictured) received a thrill recently when they were invited by the Adelaide Strikers franchise to serve as net bowlers during the recent Women’s Big Bash League fixtures at Harrup Park Mackay.
Pace bowling trio of Muller, Newbery and Evetts along with leg spinner Beardmore quickly snapped up an opportunity to match wits with some of the biggest names in women’s cricket in the early phase of the competition.
The talented quartet gained valuable experience when they sent down deliveries to the likes of female international stars Tahlia McGrath, Laura Wolvaardt, Dane van Niekerk, Deandra Dottin, Darcie Brown and Megan Schutt as part of their cricket education.
It was a magic moment for the emerging bowlers, who showed plenty of admiration for the Strikers’ batters during the extensive net sessions.
Muller, Newbery, Evetts and Beardmore are all Mackay/Whitsunday representative cricketers with bright futures in the sport.

Blokarting is a family sport, as proved when the club had an outing at Bucasia Beach over the weekend.
Members of a family walking along the beach were intrigued and encouraged to try out the sport.
“They were very impressed with the performance and simplicity of assembly of the karts – another family hooked on the sport,” a spokesman said.
“One young lad had a sail and proved to be quite good at it.”

Recently, four Mackay ‘Picklers’ travelled to the latest Australian Championship Tournament held at the very impressive Queensland Tennis Centre in’ Brisbane.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t so accommodating. The first days, Friday and Saturday, were sunshine and blue skies with the programmed games running the full day which incorporated Hybrid Coed Doubles (any age) and Junior Men’s Doubles (17 years and under).
From then on rain held up the majority of games until Sunday and Monday when some mighty tough games were played. It was fantastic to witness some of Pickleball’s gold medal winners of international and national standards.
Our players did us proud by toughing it out with some very experienced players, some just missing by a whisker for the medals. The ‘take away’ for one of our more experienced players, Rob, was stepping up for the challenge of first-time Open Singles, then Doubles at Skill level 4 and above.
Toni, another strong player, set a personal challenge by stepping up for her first experience at Skinny Singles. She also played Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
Heather, another Pickleball fanatic who always puts her heart and soul into every game, had a lot of fun playing Women’s Mixed Doubles, Doubles and Singles.
Also Greg, another Pickleball fanatic, who travelled with Margaret in their caravan to be at the tournament, played Men’s Doubles, Singles and Mixed Doubles.
All in all, it was an enormous event for our little band of Mackayites, rubbing shoulders with some of Pickleballs notoriety is all part of the experience.
Everyone is welcome to “have a go” your first try is free then a small fee of $7 per session thereafter. We will supply you with all you need to play at PCYC North Mackay-every Tuesday night from 5:30 to 7pm, Thursday from 12 mid-day to 2pm, Sunday from 9am to 11am.
