On Tuesday, the club congratulated Irene Laird on reaching Super Veteran status in bowls. President Margaret presented Irene with her Bowls QLD Super Veteran badge to mark the milestone. Irene has been a valued member of the club for 15 years, with many more years of bowling still ahead.

In Tuesday’s competition, winners were Shirley Jones and Shirley Smith, who defeated Bron Tolcher and Graham Smith. Other results saw Lindy Suann and Deb Retchless defeat Cliff Querro and Marg Wilson, while Sue Shearing, Gordon Querro and Penny Warren overcame Bill Myers, Irene Laird and Laurie Land. The jackpot was not claimed.

The final of the Mixed Triples was also played this week, with the team of Robyn Stitt, Isobel Wheeler and Mark Drummond defeating Steve Roome, Tracey White and Lloyd White.

Sunday’s social play produced close contests. Isobel Wheeler and Gavin Charles defeated Bron Tolcher and Greg Smith, while Lindy Suann and Penny Warren claimed a win over Deb Retchless and Mark Drummond. Toni Bowen, Jim Quod and Pat Tracey played out a draw against Gordon Querro, Cliff Querro and Karen Smith. The jackpot once again went unclaimed.

Airlie Beach Bowls Club enjoyed a full week of action on the greens, headlined by Shane Spann’s victory in the Club Singles Championship.

Spann faced ladies’ champion Ladda Purdie in the decider, played over three 10-end games. The first ended in a thrilling 8-all draw, but Spann’s accuracy and consistency proved too strong as he went on to claim the next two games and be crowned the 2024 Club Champion. Widely regarded as one of the best draw bowlers in the district, Spann added another title to his name in fine style.

Social bowls also drew strong numbers. Tuesday afternoon saw 22 players take part, with the winning pair of the day being skipper Tony Whitehorn and Alan Pershouse. On Wednesday afternoon, Whitehorn again featured, this time teaming with David Meiklejohn and Glen O’Brien for a commanding 35–16 win.

Wednesday night’s Business House Bowls attracted nearly 60 players, with the finals scheduled for this week before the school holiday break. Results will be reported in the next edition.

In other events, Saturday morning Scroungers went to Andy McDougall, while Kathryn Remmeswaal took out B Grade. The B Fours semi-final saw the team of skipper Merv Stewart, Denis Donnadelli, Mark Mawson and Eric Barnard overcome the fancied side of Ash Warland 21–13.

The Men’s Two Bowl Triples was dominated by Spann once again, skipping alongside Harry Quad and Warland for a comfortable win over Warren Mills’ team.

Sunday’s social bowls wrapped up the week, with Fiona Greener winning the meat tray and the team of Steve Heddles, Maureen Barnard and Mawson finishing as winners on the green.

Warm conditions signalled the arrival of summer as Proserpine Golf Club hosted another busy week of competition across all grades.

The Vets opened on Tuesday, with Proserpine hosting the Whitsunday Group. John Oates led the men with 38 points, ahead of Allen Roberts and Vic Feldman, while Paula McQuat claimed the ladies’ win with 33 on countback from Elspeth Scotford.

Wednesday’s stableford saw strong scores, with Jett Borghero and Scott Mason each posting 36 points in the men’s event, Borghero prevailing on countback. In the ladies’ field, Ann Gardel edged out Leanne Alexander with 36 points on countback, while Jenny Hounsell placed third on 34.

Thursday’s medley competition produced one of the week’s top performances, with Steven Clare carding 40 points to take out A Grade. John Dodds secured the B Grade with 38, while visitors also featured on the leaderboard, including Deborah Brown from South West Rocks Country Club.

On Friday, the nine-hole run sponsored by the Metropole Hotel went to Toni Clauss with 21 points, ahead of Nigel Dray. The “Putt for Cash” jackpot reached $600, but despite being drawn, Troy Pettiford was unable to sink the putt, rolling the prize over to $650 for next week.

Saturday’s stableford, sponsored by Allenbuild, delivered tight contests. In A Grade, Gary Scotford prevailed with 36 points on countback from Steve Hickey and Rob Stanley.

Joe Marschke topped B Grade with 38. The ladies’ event was decided on multiple countbacks, with Elspeth Scotford emerging the winner on 34 points from Sandra Goldsworthy, Toni Clauss and Trish McNeill.

The week wrapped up on Sunday with Aaron Prosser producing a standout round of 40 points to take the win, followed by Clay Coles and Danny York on 37.

The Proserpine Veterans hosted the penultimate competition of the Whitsunday Veterans Group last week, attracting 65 players from Home Hill, Collinsville, Ayr and Bowen.

Despite threatening skies, the competition was completed without interruption from rain.
John Oates claimed the men’s title with 38 points, while Allen Roberts finished runner-up on 34 points, edging out Vic Feldman, John Grosskreutz and Gary Scotford on countback.

In the ladies’ event, Paula McQuat secured victory with 33 points, just ahead of Elspeth Scotford, also on 33, with Anna Winterbourn third on 32.

Pin shot winners were Judi Sheehan (Home Hill) on hole 5, Annie Mason (Bowen) on hole 9 and Tiina Randmae (Proserpine) on hole 16. For the men, David Ingold (Home Hill) took hole 2, Larry Muller (Proserpine) hole 7 and Neale Mahoney (Ayr) hole 13.

The final round of the Croker Shield will be held in Proserpine next Tuesday, marking the last opportunity of the year to claim the trophy.

Last Saturday, the Bakers Creek Tigers Senior Women’s AFL team played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena and came away with a thrilling Grand Final victory. The Tigers faced off against the Moranbah Bulldogs and secured the win, marking another milestone for the local club.

Community Bank Sarina, major supporters of the Tigers, said, “Congratulations to the Bakers Creek Tigers AFL Women's team who took away the Grand Final Win last weekend! As major supporters of the club, we love seeing this local club go from strength to strength - well done ladies!”

The win caps off a remarkable season for the Tigers and highlights the growing strength and skill of women’s football in the region.

Over the last few weeks, Mackay parkrun has been a hotbed of record-breaking performances, with runners of all ages smashing personal bests and age category benchmarks at the community-run 5km event held every Saturday at 7am.

Age Category Milestones

Zoe Woodward celebrated her 250th parkrun while smashing her own SW30-34 Age Category Record by 16 seconds, setting a new benchmark of 18:55.

Tayah Manttan continued her remarkable form in the JW15-17 category, lowering her own record by a further 38 seconds to go sub-19 minutes, finishing in 18:54. Earlier reports also noted her previous achievement of trimming her record to 19:32 – a testament to her ongoing improvement.

New Course Record

Jared Havemann made history by becoming the first runner to complete Mackay parkrun in under 16 minutes. His blistering 15:54 finish equates to an average pace of 3:11/km, setting a new course benchmark for speed.

Three additional age category records were set:

Sunset Bay Outriggers have been on the road again, testing their skills against the best paddlers in North Queensland, with 17 paddlers making the seven-hour journey to Mission Beach.

And the club did not come home disappointed.

Both the men’s and women’s crews struck gold in the marathon races, overcoming challenging water conditions.

Conditions worsened for the Senior Master Mixed crew’s marathon, but they held on to claim a silver medal for their efforts.

The women paddlers made the most of the opportunity to enter as many 500m sprints as possible, giving them valuable training ahead of their Nationals campaign in November.

All women’s and men’s crews medalled across the weekend.

Paddlers of the Saturday, Kim Alloway and Nicole Reseck, rode the waves home to collect another gold in the OC2 4km.

In the OC1 4km event, Graham Townson took gold, Bryan Wilkinson secured gold, and Mark Bell earned bronze.

On Sunday, worsening wind and water conditions meant only the brave and the “Crazies” of outrigger racing took to the water in either a 20km or 12km course.

Sunset Bay paddlers once again rose to the challenge, with Bryan Wilkinson and Steph Lomas taking gold in the OC2 20km. In the OC1 12km, Andrew Batterson claimed silver and Peter Drew also earned silver. Wilkinson and Lomas were named Paddlers of the Sunday.

The club is now turning its focus to the Australian National Sprint Titles, to be held in Coomera from November 13–16.

To support the journey to Nationals, Sunset Bay is hosting a Trivia Night on Friday, October 24, at 6:30pm upstairs at Eimeo Surf Life Saving Club. Tickets are $25 per person and can be booked through Eventbrite.

Wet and windy conditions did not deter more than 30 runners who lined up for the Mackay Road Runners’ Jo’s 70 Steps 5km and 10km event from the Gordon White Library carpark.

The loop course featured the demanding hills of Pollock and High Streets for the 5km, with 10km competitors doubling up for an extra loop. Timekeepers Rohan Miles and Julie Whibley kept results on track despite the conditions.

In the handicap start 5km, Gail Mackie claimed first place ahead of Steve Hayles, Jo Hughes, Emily Hayles, Jim Perkins, Kayla Waugh and Judy Zahn. Judy’s effort was notable as she backed up from a Table Tennis Tournament the previous day and was due to compete in the championships’ final day that afternoon. Natasha and Craig Joynson crossed eighth and ninth consecutively, followed by Kim Saron, Leanne Connor and David Isbister. Judy also appreciated Craig’s help through a slippery section of the course.

The 10km runners faced two loops, with Jeff Pearce taking line honours from his handicap start, finishing three minutes clear of juniors Toby Rule and Max Miles. They were followed by Justin Rule, Jeremy Taylor, Andrew Wallace, Alan Zamparutti, Derek Woods, Clinton Mackie and Jared Mackie. Carolyn Mapes was the first female, finishing ahead of Jose Short, Andrew Short, Stephen Oberg and Ashley Miles.

Cool and wet conditions saw runners and volunteers pack up quickly, with thanks to all helpers including Ashley Miles, who assisted after completing his own race.

Next Sunday’s run will be a social 5km and 10km from Bluewater Quay at 4pm, scheduled around the Whitsunday Trail Running Festival in Airlie Beach and the start of school holidays. Members and non-members are welcome.

In out-of-town racing, junior athlete Toby Rule delivered outstanding results at the School Sport Australia National Cross Country. He finished as the third Queenslander, fifth Australian and sixth overall, winning gold in the team event and another gold in the 18–19 years relay. Toby now turns to the Track and Field season, competing at the ANQ North Queensland Championships in Townsville during the September holidays in the 3000m steeplechase, 800m, 1500m and 5000m. He will then race at the QRSS Championships in late October at the All Schools Nationals before trialling for the World Cross Country Championships in November, aiming for selection in the Australian Under-20 team. Balancing these commitments with his final year of school, Toby continues to impress with his dedication.

Mackay Cycles XCO Series 2 Delivers

Mackay’s mountain biking community turned up the gears for the Mackay Cycles XCO Series 2, with riders of all ages battling tough trails and clocking impressive times. The event, held on September 13, saw fast racing, strong finishes, and plenty of local pride across every grade.

In the E-Bike categories, Zac Schwarzrock dominated the men’s field, completing five laps in 1:30:45, while Mel Maddison-Stanton powered to victory in the women’s race.

The hotly contested A Grade saw Ethan Weiss edge out fellow riders with a four-lap time of 1:20:14 in the men’s race, while elite road and MTB rider Ruth Corset claimed the women’s crown in 1:21:27.

B Grade Men went to Max Teague, whose consistency across three laps earned him the top step, while Naomi Ballard topped the B Grade Women division. In C Grade Men, Camden Brownsey led the pack, finishing just ahead of Eddie Rose and Scott Bennett.

The D Grade Men race was won by Ethan Green, and in the women’s field Isabella Land rode strongly to secure first place.

Juniors showed off the sport’s exciting future. Oaklan Marwood impressed in the U13 Boys, while Toby Maitland raced clear in the U11 Boys and Stella Goodwill shone in the U11 Girls. The U9 Boys produced some of the closest racing of the day, with Sacha Sawtell just holding off Ged Rafferty by three seconds.

Mackay Teams Shine In Open And Unders & Overs Events

BRIDGE

Two team events were played last week. The Mackay Open Team and the Unders and Overs Team Events. Ten teams of four players competed in a full day competition in the Open Team event for Red Points.

Winners were the Brown Team - Frances Brown, Alan Brown, Janet Hansen and Diane Morgan only lost one game for the event. The Under and Overs Team event is an opportunity for Novices to play with more experienced players in a team competition. Mackay has arguably the best calendar of events for nurturing its new and emerging players in Queensland encouraging and supporting new members.

Winners of the event for 2025 were team Ramsden - Mary Rose Ramsden, Frances Brown, Geoffrey Patterson and Sandy Patterson.

The CiteCon Kingfishers soared to their second Porters Mitre 10 T20 Smash title on Saturday night, defeating the Gibbs Air & Refrigeration Crocs in a thrilling Grand Final at Great Barrier Reef Arena.

Led by captain Sam Vassallo, who won the toss and chose to bat first, the Kingfishers set the tone early in front of a lively crowd and online audience tuning into the Mackay Cricket Association’s livestream. The highly anticipated clash had been billed as a battle between the Kingfishers’ dominant run and the Crocs’ hunger to cause an upset – and it delivered every bit of drama expected of a championship decider.

The night, however, belonged to Zane Newton. Returning home to Mackay from Brisbane, where he plays with Northern Suburbs Cricket Club, Newton produced a match-winning performance with 46 runs and a wicket. His efforts earned him the Player of the Final award and ensured the Kingfishers’ crown remained firmly in place.

The triumph capped off an outstanding campaign for the Kingfishers, backed by team owners Bec and Brad Gardner from CiteCon, head coach Luke Kennedy, and a squad that combined consistent firepower with depth across the park. Their success confirmed the Kingfishers as the benchmark side of the competition, building on the momentum from their previous championship.

While the Kingfishers lifted the trophy, it was BTB Electrical Breakers’ Mitchell Wadsworth who walked away with the competition’s highest individual honour, being named Player of the Tournament. Wadsworth tallied 147 runs, including two half-centuries, and claimed 11 wickets – highlighted by an impressive five-wicket haul. His all-round brilliance across the six rounds made him an undeniable choice for the award.

Coaches also cast their votes for the Porters Mitre 10 T20 Smash Team of the Tournament, recognising 12 standout performers. Among those named were Kingfishers trio Vassallo, Jaxn Sign and rising under-20 talent Jack Law, alongside Crocs representatives Etienne Pretorius, Mahesh Rajaratne, Lane Kohler and Luke Jackson.

Saturday afternoon saw the Whitsunday Sea Eagles hold their 2025 Presentation Day, celebrating another exciting year on the field. In 2025, all five Sea Eagles teams competed in Elimination Finals, narrowly missing out on progressing further after some thrilling matches.

Individual accolades were a highlight, with Jake Turner (Senior Men) and Steph Griffiths (Senior Women) taking out Best & Fairest medals at the AFLQ Mackay League Awards. Aidan Allen-Fancke also earned Senior Men’s runner-up, and multiple players were recognised in the AFLQ Mackay Senior Teams of the Year.

At club level, Aidan Allen-Fancke added the Sea Eagles Senior Men Best & Fairest to his impressive record, with runner-up Eden Wishart enjoying a standout season through the midfield. Steph Griffiths backed up her league award with the Sea Eagles Senior Women Best & Fairest and also claimed the Leading Goalkicker title. Runner-up Nikki Kelly, last year’s Best & Fairest, had another strong season.

In the Under 17.5s, Blake Tissington earned the Sea Eagles Best & Fairest while also finishing runner-up in the AFLQ Mackay League Awards. Liam Steen was runner-up at club level, and Zavier Goswell claimed Leading Goalkicker.

Under 15.5s saw Lochlan Jeffries secure Best & Fairest for the second consecutive year, demonstrating class on and off the field. Runner-up Oliver Ludbrook had a strong season, while Fletcher Shumski received the Cody Gibbs Perpetual Club Award for embodying the values of being selfless, courageous, respectful, and resilient.

The Under 13.5s had another fun season, with Rory Rogan-Hamilton narrowly claiming Best & Fairest ahead of Harry Thomas, who took runner-up. Jaylah Reddaway impressed in this age group, earning Leading Goalkicker.

Sea Eagles Volunteer of the Year was a tie between Chloe Markham, for her tireless gameday support, and Andrew Ludbrook, who contributed across multiple roles throughout the year.

The weather was less than ideal on Sunday, 14 September 2025, for the second round of the Mackay Whitsunday Junior Cricket competition.

The blustery conditions didn’t rattle the Under 12 Pitbulls as they faced North Mackay Devils. Skipper L. Aitken won the bat flip and sent the Devils in. The Pitbulls’ bowlers were on target, with R. Clarke shattering the stumps for the first breakthrough. F. Holscher grabbed two (including a sharp caught-and-bowled), while L. Aitken and N. Aitken took four between them. N. Aitken was on fire with two in two, thanks to a slick catch from H. Valmadre. Norths were held to 7-85.

In reply, Proserpine lost N. Aitken early to a run out, but that was the Devils’ only joy. From there the runs flowed, with B. Whitty smashing his maiden half-century (67* off 40) and R. Clarke steady on 35*. With contributions from H. Valmadre (19), P. Regan (12*) and the Holscher brothers, the Pitbulls cruised to 2-202. Whitty was named player of the match for the second week running, as the Pitties went top of the table after two rounds.

The Under 14s faced Sarina Spartans in their first turf-pitch game of the season at Harrup Park. Sent in to bat, the Pitties delivered through M. Aitken with his maiden half-century (60 off 53, retired) and K. Whitty’s patient 26* (off 49).

Defending 142, the bowlers struck early. A. Farley was sharp behind the stumps (one catch and a run out), while L. Appleton added 1-7 off 3 overs and a catch. S. Green chipped in with 2-33. Spartans reached 6-99 before rain ended play, with the Duckworth–Lewis method confirming the Pitbulls as winners.

Conditions improved for the Under 15s clash with Walkerston Roosters. Electing to bowl, the Pitties struck quickly, led by A. Valmadre (3-3 off 3 and a run out) and L. Smith (2-16). Walkerston were dismissed for 63.

In reply, E. Baker (17 off 21) and W. Marshall (32 off 54) put on a steady start, while M. Aitken (20 off 16) and B. Hope (19 off 14) kept the scoreboard ticking. The Pitbulls passed the total comfortably with 135 runs, silencing the Roosters’ crow.

The Under 17s enjoyed home-ground advantage against Magpies White. Choosing to bat, J. Valmadre cleared the boundary regularly on his way to 55 (off 51), while O. Seamer added a composed 30* (off 37).

Set 148 to win, the Magpies faltered against sharp bowling and fielding. K. McLoughlin starred with 2-7 off 4 and three catches, while J. Lawn claimed 1-3 off 2 and a run out. Only one Magpies batter reached double figures as they were bowled out for 71, giving the Pitbulls their first win of the season.

Mission Beach, QLD — Twelve determined paddlers from Outrigger Whitsunday put their strength and skills to the test last weekend, competing in the Mission Beach Outrigger Canoe Regatta under challenging conditions.

Saturday saw crews racing in sprint and mid-distance events, with teams well-prepared for the demanding 9.5 km courses. However, Sunday’s 24 km iron event proved the ultimate test, as strong winds and a heavy surf break pushed crews to their limits.

Outrigger Whitsunday fielded two crews across the weekend. In the opening race, the Platinum Mixed crew—led by veteran steerer Peter Chamberlain—took to the water. The only team in their division, their final time was a clear reflection of just how punishing the sea state was.

The Master Mixed crew also delivered a solid performance in a competitive field, crossing the line in sixth place. Among the paddlers was first-time competitor Tama Dennison, making a strong debut under extremely tough conditions.

Weather conditions for Sunday had worsened, seeing only 1 of the 2 crews compete in the Vaka Tua Motu 24km event. The very experienced crew were forced to return to shore prior to race start to re-rig their canoe due to the pounding surf, before heading back out to officially start the race—a true testament to the team’s resilience and determination.

Junior paddler Jai Dennison had a standout weekend, competing in Sundays' 14 km Vaka Tua Potu OC1 event. He placed 9th overall out of 15 paddlers and claimed first place in his age division—an extraordinary achievement for the rising talent.

The weekend highlighted the spirit, strength, and perseverance of all paddlers involved, with Outrigger Whitsunday showing exceptional determination and teamwork in one of the most challenging regattas of the season.
