The Mackay Road Runners’ 3km Club Championship delivered an exciting display of speed and endurance at Queens Park, with strong performances across both senior and junior divisions. The club extended its thanks to Construct Health Physio for once again sponsoring the annual event. The clinic generously donated vouchers for the first two male and female finishers, as well as an additional random draw voucher for a gap-free in-clinic appointment. The draw prize was won by Graeme Harris. Nick Rewald claimed first place in an impressive time of 10 minutes and 36 seconds, backing up his performance after recording a personal best in the 5km Parkrun the previous day. Demonstrating strong sportsmanship, Rewald passed on his prize to the next male placegetter. Damian Rutland secured second place, sprinting home in a fast 10 minutes and 50 seconds. He finished just six seconds ahead of former Mackay Road Runners Club Champion Liam Mumford, who took third place. In the women’s division, Alana Knezevic continued her strong form, finishing first female and fourth overall. Lily Leven followed in second place after a fast-finishing effort, while Gail Mackie rounded out the podium shortly after achieving a personal best at the Hobart Half Marathon two weeks earlier. Several junior runners also impressed, with Ollie Dalglish, Isabelle Hayles, Oscar Hayles and Harry Sleeman performing strongly against experienced senior competitors. Other runners taking part in the event included Phoebe Short, Gail McKee, Craig Joynson, Emily Green, Jose Short, Roscoe McDonnell, Ashley Miles, Merv Shields, Bianca Miles, David Isbister, Stuart Sprott, Jan Smith, Ross Connor, Andrew Short, Leanne Connor, Lauren Connor, Natasha Joynson, Carmel Mahon and Andrew Wallace. Mackay table tennis player Robbie Richards was in his element at the Tuesday night fixtures last week.
Robbie is a defensive player known for never giving up in his matches, which often extend into five-game marathons.
This was the case on Tuesday night when all three of his singles matches went to five – the closest a slug-fest against Graeme Walker in which Graeme got up 15-13 in the 5th.
He won in five against Graham Drury and Graham Brake, helping set up a 6-5 win for his team which includes Barry Patterson and Mark Sleeman.
Tuesday morning fixtures resumed this week after a scheduled power interruption caused last week’s play to be cancelled.
Kevin Abbott had a big morning’s play, beating Don Boettcher in five but just going down to long-time opponent Roy Murray in the 5th 11-9.
In division 3, Cheryl Pearson is getting back to her best and fought out a lengthy battle with Ian Dodds, winning 12-10 in the 5th.
Junior fixtures are also played on Tuesday afternoons and new players are welcome.
If you’d like to give table tennis a try, contact Iris Grasso for Tuesday mornings (0419 702 392) or Donna Abbott (0400 769 560) for Tuesday night and junior fixtures.

Mackay squash club Squash 52 played host to the Northern Region Redbacks selection tournament last weekend.
As well as local players, participants flocked from Cairns, Ingham, and Townsville to take part in the two-day event.
Competitors ranged from beginners to advanced with everyone giving it their all.
Five divisions were played throughout the weekend, with local competitors placing in three of them.
Local star Preston Currie took out first place in Division 4.
Club coach Glenn Howarth was pleased with the tournament despite trying circumstances.
“(The tournament was) pretty good considering everything at the moment with Covid and people travelling,” Glenn said.
“We had 30 juniors playing from Mackay, Cairns, Townsville, and Ingham.
“It was a pretty good standard.
“On the whole, I think it was pretty successful. They had a good weekend, had fun, and had a few good matches.”
Glenn is excited to see what the future holds for Mackay’s next squash stars and urges kids to come and have a hit.
“Our kids are still learning and building their skills,” he said.
“Preston’s doing pretty well. He’s advancing. He won the division four.
“Everyone’s welcome,” Glenn prompts.
“It’s open and they can come down on a Monday or a Tuesday afternoon and give it a go.”
To be eligible for selection for the Northern Region Redbacks team, players must attend three of the four tournaments on the Northern Region calendar.
Following tournaments in Ingham and Mackay, the next tournament will take place in Cairns next month, with a compulsory tournament in Townsville to follow.
Following squad selection, the Northern Region Redbacks will compete at the Queensland Junior Championships, taking place on the Gold Coast later in the year.
Mackay will once again host the Northern Regions Redbacks tournament on March 4 and 5 in 2023.

A genuine who’s who of rugby league talent took to the Mackay Junior Rugby League Grounds last weekend in a return to the pitch for a star-studded International Legends of League exhibition match.
Mackay hosted the two sides, the Australian Team Of NRL Legends and the Mackay All Stars, featuring some of the region’s greatest footballers in the game.
Picks of the bunch for football greats making appearances were nine former Cowboys who made the grade including: Matt Bowen, Ben Hannant, Brent Tate, Noel Goldthorpe, Reggie Cressbrook, Kevin Campion, and Brenton Bowen lining up for the Australian side.
With 12 international caps to his name, Darren Smith pulled on the kit once again, too – there was absolutely no shortage of gold star talent.
In particular, Craig Teevan, former maroon captain, Bronco, Sea Eagle, Shark and Charger, took up a familiar spot at hooker, as well as half back, and rolled back the years alongside some old friends.
The competition has held over 62 games since its inception, hosting them across Queensland, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory, bringing the love for league to communities across the country as well as outside Australia, with games even hosted in Papua New Guinea.
The charity game in Mackay was no different to its predecessors, hosting an excellent array of talent, as well as a great turnout from the Mackay locals.

With swells at Mackay’s Harbour Beach being a consistent 0.5m to a massive 4m over the last few months, competitors are ready to take on the big surf action at this year’s State Titles in a few weeks.
Mackay SLSC lifesavers have been intensely preparing for the youth, seniors and masters state championships to be held on the Sunshine Coast at Alexandra Headlands.
“We were extremely proud of all of our competitors results at the Branch Championships at the end of last year, we only had a very short break over Christmas and then our competitors have been hitting the pool, our club gym and the surf to prepare themselves to take on the best of the best in the state,” Director of Surf Sports, Josh Grant, said.
“We had five of our nippers selected for the North Barrier Branch Team, our state champion boat crew from last year the “box bellies” are heading back as well as our head coach Greg Born and his daughter Kate to compete individually in the senior category.”
“Over the last month at training we have encountered some really big surf, some of the biggest I have seen for a while, which has been fantastic preparation to take on the conditions we will face at states. Whether our competitors only make the heats, or a final, the most reassuring thing I see in them all is that they are confident, can handle big surf, and absolutely love what they are doing in tough conditions.”
Good luck to our lifesavers at State’s!
