Record Turnout for Mackay Basketball Holiday Hoops Camp

Record Turnout for Mackay Basketball Holiday Hoops Camp

Mackay Basketball’s Holiday Hoops Camp has recorded its biggest turnout yet, with more than 140 young participants taking part across two days of basketball during the school holidays. The program, the second Holiday Hoops Camp held this year, proved a standout success and set a new participation record for the organisation’s holiday camp series. It was said that across the two days, the courts were filled with activity, with plenty of smiles, new friendships forming and a strong sense of enjoyment evident among participants. Mackay Basketball also acknowledged its coaching group, who volunteered their time to run the sessions. Coaches were recognised for their efforts in teaching, encouraging and supporting players throughout the camp, helping deliver a positive experience for all involved. The Holiday Hoops Camp continues to be a popular feature on Mackay Basketball’s calendar, providing young players with the opportunity to spend time on court during the school holidays in a structured and supportive environment. This latest edition has now set a new benchmark for participation, with organisers describing the two-day event as an “unbelievable couple of days of hoops.” With record numbers achieved, the program has again highlighted the strong level of engagement with basketball across the Mackay region, as local families continue to support opportunities for young players to get involved in the sport. The camp concluded after two full days of activity, marking another successful instalment of Mackay Basketball’s ongoing holiday program. Photo source: Mackay basketball (Facebook)

Sinkers Shine At State And National Meets

Mackay's Sinkers have continued to make waves in the pool, celebrating strong performances at both the Australian Pool Rescue Championships in Perth and the Brisbane Southside Meet at Chandler. Peter T delivered an outstanding result at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships, returning to competition for the first time in 12 months to finish second overall in the 45–60 years age group. Competing across the three-day championships, Peter claimed an impressive medal tally of one gold and four silver medals, marking a successful return after an extended break from competition. Fellow Sinkers Nigel Dalton and Dan Stampa also impressed at the Brisbane Southside Meet at Chandler, producing a series of strong swims against a competitive field of 194 registered athletes. Nigel finished third in his age group, while Dan also secured third place in his respective age group. The pair briefly celebrated holding the Small Club Trophy before competition rules required the award to be presented to another club, with a minimum of three swimmers needed to qualify. With only two Sinkers competing, the trophy was officially handed to the Belgravia team during the Face-to-Face branch meeting. Both Nigel and Dan enjoyed some extra success away from the pool, each winning prizes in the event's multi-draw. The club congratulated all swimmers on their performances and thanked Brisbane Southside Meet organisers for hosting another successful competition. Runners Brave Wild Weather At Eimeo

Runners Brave Wild Weather At Eimeo

More than 20 runners turned out in challenging conditions at Eimeo Surf Club on the weekend, including the dedicated Mackay Tri Club members who, after completing their run, took to the ocean for a "little" 2km swim. The 5km and 10km courses featured plenty of challenging hills through the Blacks Beach, Dolphin Heads and Eimeo suburbs, providing an ideal hit-out for athletes preparing to taper ahead of the upcoming Gold Coast Running Festival and various Ironman events. Those who took shelter from the rain beneath the Surf Life Saving Control Watch Tower also enjoyed learning a few tricks of the trade about the delicate nature of the tummy, including checking that the milk is lactose free. A big thank you goes to Andrew Short for once again setting up a spectacular course. A legendary stalwart of the club, his ongoing contribution continues to be greatly appreciated. With a significant number of athletes away competing at out-of-town events, including the Gold Coast, Mackay Road Runners will instead host a social 5km and 10km run from Casu Jacks at Mackay Harbour this Sunday, starting at 7am. Participants are encouraged to bring along card or cash for breakfast, a cuppa and a chat, while celebrating the first run of the new financial year following 30 June 2026. All members and non-members are welcome to attend for a $2 race day fee. Please arrive by 6.50am for registration, the course briefing and club notices. August 14, 2025

Mackay Junior Rugby Union is set to launch its 2025 season in style, with a community sign-on day and first training session scheduled for Sunday, August 17, from 2pm to 4pm at Quarry Hill, North Mackay.

The club, which continues to grow under the leadership of its dedicated president, is opening its doors to players of all experience levels, from absolute beginners to seasoned juniors. Training will be held Friday nights, with Sunday games and a full calendar of carnivals in Emerald, Airlie Beach, Moranbah, and Mackay.

This year sees the introduction of two exciting development programs: ‘Get into Rugby’, a fun, skill-based initiative for children aged 4–7, and ‘Girls Can Tackle Anything’, a dedicated program for girls aged 6–12 aimed at boosting female participation in the sport.

Adding to the excitement, Mackay Junior Rugby Union has been invited to send a group of players to walk onto the field before the Wallabies game in Townsville this September, calling for an unforgettable experience for the young athletes.

The 2024 season was one to remember, with the club’s Under-12s and Under-10s teams either winning or placing second in every carnival they entered. The talent pipeline is also strong, with two standout players from last year’s U12s recently selected for the prestigious Queensland Country Rugby Union Team.

With rugby offering not just physical benefits but also teamwork, resilience, and friendships that last a lifetime, Mackay Junior Rugby Union is eager to welcome the next wave of players.

Parents and players are encouraged to head to Quarry Hill on August 17 to be part of a club that’s kicking goals both on and off the field.

Harpertastic Travel Burpees Raise Over $3,000 for Children’s Medical Research

August 7, 2025

It was a workout with heart and purpose as Mackay locals hit the ground jumping last Saturday for the annual Harpertastic 1km Travel Burpees challenge. The high-energy fundraiser raised $3,180 for Jeans for Genes Australia, supporting vital research into childhood cancers and genetic disorders.

A total of 139 participants took part in the physically gruelling event, which required individuals or teams to complete a full kilometre of travel burpees. Four participants completed the entire distance solo, one burpee at a time, while 17 local businesses were represented on the course.

The event was once again powered by the passion of organisers Amy and Harper, with widespread support from the Mackay fitness and business community.

“To all the businesses that donated prizes, thank you,” the organisers said, acknowledging contributions from Mass Nutrition Mackay, Base Performance & Recovery, The Dispensary Mackay, LSKD, Scents of Empowerment – Leonie Featherstone’s Essential Oils, and NFE Running.

Event support came from across the region, including Rob Kidd, 7NEWS Mackay, Hansen MEDIA, She Fitness, Denzel Bobongie Visuals & Bandy Bongo Photography, and Carolyn Smithson – On the Move Photography.

“The love and laughter on the course was incredible. All there for the right reasons and showing all children battling that they aren't alone. Now we plan for 2026!” said a representative from NRG Plus Personal Training.

With 1 in 20 Australian children born with a genetic condition or birth defect (equivalent to one child in every classroom), fundraising efforts like this are more than just symbolic. They are essential.

To support the cause, visit the Harpertastic Jeans for Genes fundraising page. Every dollar brings researchers one step closer to breakthroughs, and gives hope to families who need it most.

Meet Heather Sutton Whitsunday Sailing Club Commodore

August 7, 2025

Whitsunday Sailing Club Commodore Heather Sutton plays a vital role in Airlie Beach Race Week, focusing on the volunteer crew who keep the event going.

“My role within Race Week is to organise volunteers,” Heather said.

Race Week is run by volunteers and we are very lucky that a lot of our volunteers have been coming back year after year, and they come from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, we also have our local volunteers.”

From race directors to mark layers and prize organisers, volunteers handle most aspects of the event.

“Our volunteers start from the top, the Race Director, he's a volunteer, and our Principal Race Officer is a volunteer, it's all done by volunteers,” she said.

“We have about 50 volunteers.”

Heather, who has sailed around the world, said sailing has been her life since age 12.

“You don't think about anything that's happening on shore, all your worries go away because you're concentrating on getting that boat going faster.”

With Airlie Beach Race Week fast approaching, Heather’s still calling for more help.

“We are still looking for volunteers and they don’t have to have a sailing boat or boat license, they can be on the water helping.”

August 7, 2025

As Regatta Director of Airlie Beach Race Week, Jenni Birdsall’s job spans the entire year, not just the week of racing in Airlie Beach.

“I’m basically in charge of coordinating as much as I possibly can to bring everyone together and direct whatever their role entails,” Jenni said.

Her responsibilities cover everything from official race documentation and safety management to results and coordination across teams.

She describes her role as a helicopter role, viewing all roles from above.

“I’m the overall coordinator of any safety issues that happen on or off the water within the regatta precinct,” she explained. “

I’m also managing the results, and I’m responsible for making sure everything flows the way it should.”

Airlie Beach is the only regatta where Jenni officially takes on the Regatta Director title, but she works across several major Australian events, including Hamilton Island, Magnetic Island, Geelong, and Townsville.

“I work with a good group of people and we rely on each other, we trust each other.”

With many race officials in their 60s, 70s or 80s, Jenni is helping train new recruits.

Meet Terry Archer Airlie Beach Race Week Chairman

As Chairman of Airlie Beach Race Week, Terry Archer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the annual sailing event runs smoothly both on and off the water. But come Thursday afternoon, he switches hats, trading the coordination clipboard for the helm of his multihull racer.

“I have a dual role,” Terry explained. “I’m effectively the connection between the club’s management, the volunteers, and ensuring the onshore and offshore events. Then, from Thursday afternoon, I became a competitor.”

From Thursday afternoon onwards, Terry rolls into Race Mode.

Terry works closely with Regatta Director Jenni Birdsall, who oversees all sailing-related logistics. Together with volunteers coordinated by Heather, and with input from world-renowned race officers Kevin and Ross Wilson, the regatta comes to life across 11 classes and numerous divisions, including the highly subscribed Performance Cruising class.

Terry will race in the Racing Multihull Division alongside a crew of three fellow club members.

After the busy lead-up, Terry is looking forward to his time on the water. Despite being the Chairman, he is treated like a competitor, and he’s looking forward to representing the Whitsunday Sailing Club in the competition.

Busy Week Of Success For Airlie Beach Bowls Club

August 7, 2025

Can you believe there are only three weeks until spring? As the weather warms up in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales, our seasonal visitors will begin to head home. But what a week it has been for Airlie Beach Bowls Club—full of milestones, tight matches, and well-earned victories.

The week began with the Ladies A Grade Singles Final on Tuesday morning, with Betty Whitehorn and Vicki Spann going head-to-head in a thrilling contest. Despite a late comeback from Vicki, Betty held on to claim the title 25–22 in a closely fought battle. Betty has now achieved an impressive record—winning the B Grade title in 2017, the A Grade in 2018, and again in 2025. A huge congratulations to her.

In Tuesday afternoon social bowls, visiting bowler Mick Humphries from Moama Bowls Club (on the NSW/Victoria border) joined locals Tony Kelly (skip) and Pip Heddles to deliver a dominant performance against a strong field of 18 bowlers.

Also during the week, the Champion of Champions Ladies Fours was held at West Tigers and Northern Beaches Bowls Clubs. Representing ABBC, the team of Joan McGrath (skip), Ladda Purdie, Jill Spencer and Lyn Graham claimed the title. Their win was met with well-deserved pride and applause from the club.

Saturday morning’s Scroungers competition saw first-round wins to Mark Mawson, John Askew and Andy McDougall. Askew went on to take the overall win, while Andrew Butler claimed the B Grade title.

On Sunday, 26 players took part in a competitive social bowls afternoon. The winning team—Tony Kelly (skip), Cathie Harris (lead) and Mel Fennell (second)—held their nerve in a close finish.

Meanwhile, at Sarina, the Champion of Champions Men’s Fours saw our team—Manny Isgro (skip), Bob McMahon, Luke Kinnear and Russell Jackson—defeat Proserpine in the semi-final before sealing a 20–18 victory over South Suburban with a thrilling last-bowl finish by Manny.

Looking ahead, Dan Dowell will represent the club in Monday’s Ladies B Grade Champion of Champions final, and Betty Whitehorn returns Tuesday for the A Grade Champion of Champions. Best of luck to both.

Well done to all involved in a standout week for ABBC. Safe travels to our visiting bowlers—we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
