The fishing around Airlie Beach certainly hasn’t been all that enjoyable with all the rain lately. But wet season is coming to an end, and we know many of you are itching to make the most of every good weather window coming up.

Dam
The dam has been fishing pretty well over the past week and we expect it to keep doing so. With the recent rains, focus on anywhere there’s still water flowing into the dam, as well as windswept points.

For lures, 4-6” paddle tail soft plastics are your best bet. We recommend the Panic Stations 4”, 5” and 6”. Small jerk baits are also a great option, and we can recommend the Samaki Redic’s.

Estuary
With the recent rains, the crabs should have been pushed out into the rivers and creeks. The focus for these should be towards the mouth of the waterway, where there’s going to be more salt water than fresh.

The size of the tides is reducing over the weekend, so focus on the tide changes to target barramundi, jew fish, and salmon.

Islands & Offshore
With strong south-easterly winds predicted, anyone brave enough to venture out to the islands should stay on the north/north-western side to get as much protection as possible.

Try fishing for coral trout around the fringing reef drop-offs. Use soft plastics in 3-5m of water. We recommend the Mikado Jaws.

Unfortunately, rain forced the cancellation of play on Tuesday, and the wet weather continues to linger this week, affecting upcoming games.

On Saturday, our men’s and ladies’ teams travelled to Collinsville for a challenging day of competition in extremely hot and humid conditions. Wangaratta emerged victorious, securing two match wins. A big thank you to Collinsville for their hospitality, including the delicious lunch and afternoon tea provided for all participants.

In Sunday afternoon’s play, Irene Laird and Alby Vigar defeated Jim Quod and Gavin Charles in a hard-fought match. In the other game, Jocelyn Defranciscis and Robyn Stitt triumphed over Deb Retchless and Pat Tracey. Unfortunately, the jackpot did not go off, continuing the streak of unsuccessful draws, better luck next week!

March means the wet season, and everyone here at our little club hoping for some respite and that the cover will arrive soon. This week saw no bowls played on Tuesday or Wednesday, including the Business House Bowls.

However, the Men's A Division Singles is now down to three competitors. A fantastic game was played between Andy McDougall and Harry Quod, which ended in a neck-and-neck finish. Harry proved too strong in the end, winning 26-19, and will now face the winner of the match between Manny Isgro and Shane Spann.

The final of the 2025 Mixed Pairs Competition was held on Sunday afternoon, where Shane and his lovely wife Vicki, faced Margo Stanley and John Fielding. At one stage, John and Margo held a commanding 16-7 lead, but Vicki and Shane rallied, and with just one end to go, it was 18-all. Margo bowled magnificently in the final end, leading her team to a 20-18 victory, making them this year's champions. This moment is captured in this week's photo.

While this match was taking place, Sunday Social Bowls was also in action. The winning team, skippered by Men’s President Peter Barrett, with Paul Osborne at lead and Mark Mawson at second, won on the last end with the final bowl against John Matterson's team, which included Phil O'Brien at lead and Duncan Smith at second. Meanwhile, Andy McDougall's team, with Sue Dakin at lead and Lu Rogan at second, triumphed over Tony Kelly’s team of Amanda O'Brien at lead and Juanita Matterson at second in a dominant victory.

The Airlie Beach Bowls Club will be hosting an ambitious fundraising day on Saturday, 10th May. The event will include a car boot sale and other exciting activities, with more details to be announced soon. Site fees will be $10 each and the bar will be open.

It’s been a huge week for the Cannonvale Cannons with plenty to celebrate across club night, carnivals, and representative events.

At our weekly club night, swimmers were recognised for their efforts with Chocolate Awards presented to Pippa Laguna, Miller Eaves, and Zane Clayworth. Coaches Awards went to Eric Mulliss for a strong 100IM and Caleb Woolston for an impressive 50m Freestyle. Upgrades were awarded to Zane Clayworth, Gracie Crichton, Miller Eaves, Eloise Chegwidden, Caleb Woolston, Matilda Nicholes, Kaitlyn Moon, Airlie Mladenovski, Asher Springbett, Levi Smith, Liam Filewood, and Gracie Laguna. Club Records were also broken by Eloise Chegwidden in the 200IM, and Harry Chegwidden in both the 25m Backstroke and 25m Breaststroke.

Over the weekend, 18 Cannons travelled to the 2025 Bowen Family Long Course Transition Meet. This relaxed and fun carnival is perfect for developing swimmers and those chasing A Grade upgrades. Congratulations to Liam Filewood, Lucas Korosec, and Addie Sanders who achieved Swimming North Queensland A Grade times! Top performers based on personal bests included Evie Doherty, Liam Filewood, Roxanne Groom, Stella Mulliss, Miranda Palmero, and Faithlyn Trotter.

Meanwhile, four of our Cannons headed south on Sunday to tackle the Mirani Triathlon — well done to Penelope and River Shields, Millie Groom, and Matilda Nicholes for representing the club in true Cannons style.

And finally, a huge congratulations to our swimmers who have been selected for the North Queensland Schools Team to compete at the State Championships in Brisbane. We wish them all the very best and look forward to cheering them on and reporting back next week, GO CANNONS!

It was another week of challenging weather conditions, with multiple course closures throughout the week. However, some players managed to get out for a game, making the most of the limited opportunities.

Friday, 21st March 2025 - Metropole Run (Front 9 Holes)
Tim Walton took the win with an impressive 18 points. Carwyn Moon finished as runner-up with 30 points, and Jett Borghero (from Future Golf) placed third with 10 points. A special mention goes to Blake Lovelock, who gave the "putt for cash" competition three valiant attempts, but unfortunately, the pot grows to $550 for next Friday.

Saturday, 22nd March 2025 - Opening Day for 2025
The season kicked off with a 4BBB event and a shotgun start at 11:00 AM, drawing a strong turnout of 56 competitors—a great start to the year! The winners were Ben Smith and Kristian Mulholland with 45 points, followed by runners-up Sara Hagy and Mata Browne with 43 points (on a countback), and Brendan Spann and Patrick Camm rounding out 3rd place.

The individual winners for the day in the Men's Competition was Mata Browne with 37 points (on a countback), with Ben Smith as runner-up and 3rd place going to Shane Van Poelgeest with 36 points. For the Ladies' Competition, the winner was Sara Hagy with 33 points, the runner-up was Di Chard with 30 points and Tina Badenhorst came 3rd with 26 points.

Blake Davis was the overall winner with 38 points (on a countback), Sherri Meade was the runner-up and Sara Hagy came 3rd with 36 points. We were able to play social bowls on Sunday afternoon, and it was such a pleasure to have a game of bowls. The green was running beautifully, and for that, we thank the continued work of those who look after the green for us. We also appreciate those who banded together and did such amazing work during the series of working bees held to address some issues on the green, particularly with the drainage.

Arthur Griffith and Philip Brown made a comeback from a slow start to be level with Alen Sanderson and Mike Harrison at afternoon tea. From there on, it was a tightly contested game, with Arthur and Philip ultimately defeating Alen and Mike 19-18.

Barry Zillmann and Heather Brown also had a game that started off level pegging and continued all the way in their match against Bruce Uhe and Sandy Daffara, until the seventh end, when a 5 was scored, which changed the complexion of the game. Barry and Heather went on to defeat Bruce and Sandy 32-12.

In Bowen, Michael Kinnear, Luchie Gardel, Gavin Milne, and Barry Saroglia came third in the event held there this weekend. Congratulations to them for performing so well at this very strong carnival.

An order for new uniform shorts and shirts will be placed in the next week or so. If you need a new uniform, please contact Heather to let her know your size and whether you would like short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts, or short or long pants.

We’re hoping for a continuation of some drier weather so we can rid ourselves of this tendency toward developing webbed feet!

The Proserpine Indoor Bowls Club is excited to welcome its new president, Joe Laski, who has been a dedicated member of the club since 2016. Joe took over the role of president last year, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, and long-standing president of 50 years, Vivian. This year, Lesleyrose King has joined the leadership team as the club's new Secretary and Treasurer, stepping in after Vivian's wife, Jan, concluded her service.

Joe’s passion for the club is clear, emphasising that the focus is on giving the game a go and enjoying the sport rather than competing for trophies. “We just play for the fun,” he says, describing atmosphere of the laid-back games held every Tuesday afternoon. The games start at 2pm, includes a tea and biscuit break and typically conclude by 4pm.

Lesleyrose, who brings a community-focused mindset to her new roles, notes that the club is a welcoming space for all skill levels. “Anyone can play,” she affirms, highlighting the inclusivity of the club. This week it was announced with great excitement that the Whitsundays is on the roadmap for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Whitsunday region is to benefit from an increase of infrastructure, transport connectivity, tourism and grassroots sport as the announced 2032 Delivery Plan sets the path for a successful 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the region.

Recognising the value in Queensland’s regional centres like the beautiful Whitsundays, the drive to host the Olympic sailing events will bring more tourism opportunities and support local community grassroots sport. The Whitsundays is in the box seat to co-host the various sailing events in partnership with Townsville.

Tony Mahood President of Sailability Whitsundays and a local sailor of more than 40 years, who participated in the first ever Hamilton Island Race Week, said he was thrilled with the news.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Airlie Beach and the surrounding areas as it brings more activity and sporting awareness to the area," he said.

As part of this week's announcement, the Whitsundays will receive a share in the $250 million Games On! programs and this funding will assist with upgrades to grassroots community clubs.

Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox said he was glad to see the Olympics reach some of the more regional areas within his electorate.

“I am excited to hear the announcement by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli and I thank him for listening and making this an Olympics for all of Queensland,” he shared.

“The Whitsundays is set to benefit with Olympic Sailing to take place along the picturesque shoreline and crystal blue waters.”

“Not only can spectators watch the sailing, they can visit one of the 74 beautiful islands, dive on the Great Barrier Reef and make the most of this holiday destination.”

“From the first announcement that Queensland would play host to the Olympics, I have been committed to ensuring the Olympics come to life in my electorate of Dawson.”

“The legacy of the games will extend beyond competition and I look forward to the games.”

Premier David Crisafulli said 2032 would be "a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver an infrastructure, tourism and grassroots sports legacy to benefit all of Queensland."

Thirty-one players took part in a Four Ball Best Ball event. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of participants, the game had to be abandoned with only a few holes left to play due to worsening weather conditions. As a result, the competition was scored as a Stableford over the first nine holes, which led to some lower scores than expected.

In the ladies' division, Rehab Hull emerged victorious with 18 points, while Paula McQuat also finished with 18 points but was edged out on a countback. Elspeth Scotford, also on 18 points, secured a spot in the rundown, along with Heather Luvis, Vickie Wallace, and Beryl Nosworthy, all of whom scored 16 points.

For the men, Gerald Lovell took the win with 21 points, followed by Colin Hounsell in second place with 20 points. A countback also placed Steve Mitchell and Jim Sherrington both with 20 points in the rundown. Laurie Dakin (18 points), Barry Mortimer, Craig McClean, and Peter Lindsay (17 points), John Wallace and Peter Fox rounded out the results with 16 points.

Elspeth Scotford led the ladies with two pin shots, followed by Jacqui Wall, Tina Badenhorst, Vickie Wallace, Jenny Hounsell, and Rehab Hull. For the men, Laurie Dakin, John Oates, Colin Hounsell, Peter Fox, and Vic Feldman recorded pin shots. Elspeth Scotford, Tina Badenhorst, Rehab Hull, Gerald Lovell, and Craig McClean had chip-ins.

Draw winners included Elspeth Scotford, who won the $40 Members Draw, and Vic Feldman, who took home the $50 Fishi Voucher. Despite the weather challenges, spirits remained high, and everyone has fingers crossed for better weather next time!

The Whitsunday Touch Football Club is calling for more females to join and experience the fun, camaraderie, and community of touch footy. It’s easy to learn and get involved, whether you're a beginner, returning after a break, or a girl who's rocked the touch footy world for years, the Club is the place for you.

All the teams are mixed and sorted by grades, so you may even find yourself playing against your father like Sylvie who has been with the club for 2 years; “Dad was always playing touch as I grew up, and I used to play when I was really young, but didn’t stay with it. It’s pretty awesome to be able to play footy with my dad.”

Matilda, who’s back after a long break, shared about her second week playing; “Everyone is super friendly and really welcoming, they’ve made me feel really comfortable.” She says, “it's nice to play with people of all different ages.”

Lanie and Chloe have been playing for 5 and 20 years, respectively, and both love playing at Jubilee Pocket. “I play A grade with the adults, and everyone’s really supportive,” says young Lanie. Chloe shares, “It’s a beautiful club. We’re a small community but always get a big turnout. I look forward to Monday nights and I’m still learning lots of skills and picking up new tricks all the time!”

The winners of Tuesday's social bowls were Damien R and Alby Vigar, who defeated Sharina R and Mark Drummond. In the other game, Irene Laird and Marg Wilson emerged victorious against Deb Retchless and Robyn Stitt. Unfortunately, the jackpot did not go off.

On Sunday afternoon, Alby Vigar and Mark Drummond triumphed over Robyn Stitt and Graeme Read in their match. Meanwhile, in the triples game, Sugar Brunker, Isobel Wheeler, and Pat Tracey won on the final end, defeating Lindy Suann, Deb Retchless, and Penny Warren in an exciting finish. Once again, the jackpot did not go off.

The Ladies Competition has now begun, with the Fours team event featuring F. Duncan against P. Warren scheduled for Saturday, 29 March, at 8:30 am.

Looking ahead to next Saturday, the second round of the men's local pennant will take place all day at Collinsville, to face off against Collinsville! Best of luck to all of our players.

The wet season has arrived across Queensland, including here in paradise, which meant bowls was intermittent this week. On Monday morning, 48 ladies participated in the annual Autumn Carnival and PAH celebration, marking 38 years of women’s bowls in our community. It was a great start to the day before the rain arrived, with only one game being played in the tournament.

Many thanks to Ladies President Carol Crosbie, Vice President Wendy Pomeroy, Games Controller Lyn Graham, and invited guest Mae Secomb, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Chairman John Brown and Vice Chairman John Askew were also in attendance, along with bowlers from Mackay, Proserpine, Bowen, Wangaratta, and the Airlie ladies. The event was proudly sponsored by Whitsunday Vista Apartments and All Aussie Arboriculture and Tree Lopping. All players received prizes for their great sportsmanship.

There was no play on Tuesday or Wednesday; however, Wednesday night's Business House bowls, run by Bob and Yvonne Spees, was a huge success.

The Men's A Grade competition is down to the four semi-finalists: Manny Isgro defeated Russell Jackson, Shane Spann defeated Ash Warland, Harry Quod won in a nail-biter against Rick Galea, and Andy McDougall defeated Arthur McManus in another close encounter.

On Sunday afternoon, there was a draw between Betty Whitehorn with Bill Gordon and Dawn Dowell, against Tony Whitehorn, John Anderson, and Mark Mawson.

Cannonvale Cannons swimmers enjoyed an exciting Club Night last week, highlighted by record-breaking achievements and strong performances in the pool. The night was particularly special as the club recognised two outstanding swimmers for their new records set during the Club Championships.

Seven-year-old Harry Chegwidden set three new club records with a time of 1:48.26 in the 100m Individual Medley, 25.90 in the 25m Breaststroke, and 43.08 in the 50m Freestyle. In the 11-year-old category, Jax Clayworth set a new benchmark in the 200m Breaststroke, finishing in 3:12.21.

Harry continued his winning streak, receiving an upgrade to the 100m Freestyle, while newcomer Airlie Mladenovski earned upgrades to the 50m Freestyle and 25m Butterfly. Harry capped off a stellar week by receiving the Coaches Award for his outstanding 100m IM performance — his third major achievement of the night. Among the standout swimmers at Club Night, Miller Eaves, Matilda Nicholes, and Liam Filewood delivered impressive personal bests, demonstrating the depth of the club’s talent.

Meanwhile, a small group of Cannons made the journey to Townsville for the Lightning Swim Club Long Course Transition Meet, with Koa Harland delivering a spectacular performance, achieving five personal bests across her events.

Looking ahead, many of our swimmers will travel to Brisbane next weekend to represent the North Queensland Schools Team, while others will head to Bowen for the two-day Bowen Annual Carnival. We wish all our competitors the best of luck as they showcase their skills and represent their club with pride.

Get ready to rev your engines and don your sharpest suits because the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is returning to Bowen on May 18, 2025 for its 4th consecutive year. This global event brings together classic and vintage-style motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s mental health and prostate cancer research.

The ride, which runs from 08:00 to 11:00, is not only about stunning motorcycles and dapper fashion—it’s about making a difference. Riders including Men, Women and their Pillions will cruise through Bowen in their finest attire, all while supporting an important cause. Sue Tapp, who along with her husband Barry, have been hosting and helping organise the event since it began in Bowen in 2022; “This is an important cause for us and we are proud to support it in the community,” she shared.

In 2024, Bowen saw around 80 participants join the ride, a number that continues to grow each year as the community rallies around this important cause. The global event, which in attracted over 114,000 riders last year, raised an impressive $6,705 AUD in Bowen alone, showcasing the generosity and commitment of local riders.

The event is free, but registration is required. The Bowen ride is a chance to join fellow riders, enjoy the scenic route, and contribute to a cause that impacts so many men’s lives by fundraising for the ride.
