Mackay Basketball’s Holiday Hoops Camp has recorded its biggest turnout yet, with more than 140 young participants taking part across two days of basketball during the school holidays. The program, the second Holiday Hoops Camp held this year, proved a standout success and set a new participation record for the organisation’s holiday camp series. It was said that across the two days, the courts were filled with activity, with plenty of smiles, new friendships forming and a strong sense of enjoyment evident among participants. Mackay Basketball also acknowledged its coaching group, who volunteered their time to run the sessions. Coaches were recognised for their efforts in teaching, encouraging and supporting players throughout the camp, helping deliver a positive experience for all involved. The Holiday Hoops Camp continues to be a popular feature on Mackay Basketball’s calendar, providing young players with the opportunity to spend time on court during the school holidays in a structured and supportive environment. This latest edition has now set a new benchmark for participation, with organisers describing the two-day event as an “unbelievable couple of days of hoops.” With record numbers achieved, the program has again highlighted the strong level of engagement with basketball across the Mackay region, as local families continue to support opportunities for young players to get involved in the sport. The camp concluded after two full days of activity, marking another successful instalment of Mackay Basketball’s ongoing holiday program. Photo source: Mackay basketball (Facebook)

Mackay's Sinkers have continued to make waves in the pool, celebrating strong performances at both the Australian Pool Rescue Championships in Perth and the Brisbane Southside Meet at Chandler. Peter T delivered an outstanding result at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships, returning to competition for the first time in 12 months to finish second overall in the 45–60 years age group. Competing across the three-day championships, Peter claimed an impressive medal tally of one gold and four silver medals, marking a successful return after an extended break from competition. Fellow Sinkers Nigel Dalton and Dan Stampa also impressed at the Brisbane Southside Meet at Chandler, producing a series of strong swims against a competitive field of 194 registered athletes. Nigel finished third in his age group, while Dan also secured third place in his respective age group. The pair briefly celebrated holding the Small Club Trophy before competition rules required the award to be presented to another club, with a minimum of three swimmers needed to qualify. With only two Sinkers competing, the trophy was officially handed to the Belgravia team during the Face-to-Face branch meeting. Both Nigel and Dan enjoyed some extra success away from the pool, each winning prizes in the event's multi-draw. The club congratulated all swimmers on their performances and thanked Brisbane Southside Meet organisers for hosting another successful competition. More than 20 runners turned out in challenging conditions at Eimeo Surf Club on the weekend, including the dedicated Mackay Tri Club members who, after completing their run, took to the ocean for a "little" 2km swim. The 5km and 10km courses featured plenty of challenging hills through the Blacks Beach, Dolphin Heads and Eimeo suburbs, providing an ideal hit-out for athletes preparing to taper ahead of the upcoming Gold Coast Running Festival and various Ironman events. Those who took shelter from the rain beneath the Surf Life Saving Control Watch Tower also enjoyed learning a few tricks of the trade about the delicate nature of the tummy, including checking that the milk is lactose free. A big thank you goes to Andrew Short for once again setting up a spectacular course. A legendary stalwart of the club, his ongoing contribution continues to be greatly appreciated. With a significant number of athletes away competing at out-of-town events, including the Gold Coast, Mackay Road Runners will instead host a social 5km and 10km run from Casu Jacks at Mackay Harbour this Sunday, starting at 7am. Participants are encouraged to bring along card or cash for breakfast, a cuppa and a chat, while celebrating the first run of the new financial year following 30 June 2026. All members and non-members are welcome to attend for a $2 race day fee. Please arrive by 6.50am for registration, the course briefing and club notices. Last Thursday, the underwater hockey club made a splash with a record-breaking turnout of 20 players! That’s right, our aquatic arena was packed to the brim, and the energy was electric. With full teams and four substitutes, our positional and support play reached new depths!
However, we might need to rethink our guest policy. If newcomers like Boyd and Kurt have breath-holding skills that rival Aquaman, we could be in for a challenge! Seriously, folks, if you think you can outlast our new “gills,” come on down and test your mettle.
And let’s not forget our rising stars, Angus and Harry. These two have taken “annoyingly good” to a whole new level, leaving us all wondering if they’ve been secretly training with dolphins. But despite their impressive skills, it was a team effort that made the night a success. A huge shoutout to everyone who helped pack up afterward—it was a true display of teamwork!
So, if you’re looking for a sport that combines fitness, laughter, and a chance to show off your underwater skills (or lack thereof), come join us on Monday and Thursday nights! You might just find your new favourite hobby lurking beneath the surface.

What a great start to the 2025 season with junior competition kicking off!
The action began with Dragons Tyre Power facing Dunbar Awsum Angels, resulting in a tie of 10 all.
Alanna Counsell and Lachlan Mikle each picked up two walks, while Ruben Tassan had two ripper hits to score runs for the Dragons. Ruben also did a great job on the mound with two strikeouts. Eli Neilson led the way for Dunbar, slamming a home run, while Tristian Hillier and Payton Roderique each picked up two walks. Young Zac Hargrave was on the mound for the Angels, recording two strikeouts.
Dragons powered past NTH Jacklin Chaos with a 15–3 win.
Levi Counsell was the only Dragon to cross home plate three times. Sam Colless and Sienna Kitto each picked up two walks to get on base. Great pitching from the cousin duo Noah and Boyd Baxter led the Dragons to victory. Darcy Oslanger and Frankie Corbett were the standout players for the Angels, with Darcy getting two base hits and both Frankie and Darcy crossing home to add scores. Harry Oslanger and Frankie pitched a great game.
Joey Ball was split into two groups, with Kirsty Zammit taking the baby Joeys. Parents and grandparents helped the coaches show new skills and have fun with the future little softballers.
Rookie Ball had a huge turnout for the day, learning new skills and playing great games.
Despite the heat, they battled through, and at the end of the game, they were treated with a splash in the sprinklers to cool down.
Next week, games will start at 8:45 a.m. for the U/14s.

The Sarina Junior Rugby League Club is rebuilding after a devastating fire tore through their equipment shed at the Sarina Showgrounds earlier this year, destroying vital gear and irreplaceable memorabilia.
The fire, which occurred on January 23, 2025, was sparked when the club’s mower caught fire and exploded, severely injuring long-time volunteer Butch. Despite his efforts to contain the flames, the fire spread rapidly, leaving the shed beyond saving.
Built through the dedication of volunteers over the years, the shed was more than just a storage facility. It housed training equipment, home game essentials, and sponsor signage, as well as historical memorabilia from the club’s proud history since its formation in 1968. The loss was a heartbreaking blow to the Sarina Crocs community, who gather at the grounds not only for training and matches but also as a place where friendships are forged and young players develop their skills.
Despite the setback, the Sarina community has rallied to support the club’s recovery. Local businesses and individuals have stepped up with generous donations to help rebuild. One of the first to lend a hand was Ray White Sarina, who contributed $500 through their community cash initiative to help the Crocs get back on track for the upcoming season.
“We’re wishing you guys the best season this year - go Crocs!” Ray White Sarina shared in their message of support.
The recovery effort took a significant step forward on March 7, when the damaged shed was demolished to make way for a new build. Darren Matthews Excavations played a crucial role, donating time and equipment to clear the site. Additional contributions came from Goodies Excavations, Keating Haulage, Raw Metal Corp – Mackay, and Shipping Container Rentals Mackay, who provided a temporary storage solution until the new shed is completed. GSR Hire also assisted with the safe delivery of the container to the club’s grounds.
Grant and Haylee Nicholas from Third Ground have also stepped up to support the club, generously donating much-needed training equipment. Their contribution has been a game-changer as the club works to restock after the fire.
“Your support means the world to us,” the club shared.
“This donation ensures our young players have the tools they need to keep training and rebuilding stronger than ever.”
Sarina State School has also rallied behind the club, hosting a fantastic fundraising event that raised an impressive $1,406.75 for the Sarina Junior League Fire Appeal.
“We’re so grateful for your compassion and commitment to helping our club,” the club shared.
Even clubs from Mackay have stepped up to support Sarina Junior Rugby League in their time of need. Magpies Sporting Club Mackay has pledged to donate $2 from every new and renewed membership throughout March to the club, along with an additional $1,000 to assist in the rebuild.
"Sarina Junior League recently lost everything when a horror fire destroyed their sports shed," Magpies shared.
"We want to help them get their 350+ young players back to playing footy."
Sarina Junior Rugby League has long been a powerhouse for developing young talent, with NRL stars like North Queensland Cowboys' Reuben Cotter emerging from its ranks. In 2024, the club supported over 350 players, and the passion for the game remains as strong as ever despite this recent hardship.
The club remains determined to rebuild, with calls for further community support to help replace lost equipment and fund the new shed. While insurance will cover part of the cost, additional donations—whether financial contributions or volunteer skills—are needed to restore what was lost.
“We’re committed to continuing the proud Crocs story and ensuring our kids have the gear they need to train and compete,” the club said in a statement.
“This will be a long road to recovery, but every bit of support helps.”
Anyone able to contribute—whether through donations or volunteering—can reach out to Gary Dickson at president@sarinajrl.com or Vice President Aimee Korte at vicepresident@sarinajrl.com.
The Sarina Crocs may have lost a shed, but their spirit remains unshaken. With the community’s backing, they are determined to rebuild bigger and stronger for future generations of young players.

The Mackay Cutters’ Hostplus Cup season opener against the PNG Hunters was postponed over the weekend due to Cyclone Alfred, which disrupted travel plans and forced the QRL to reschedule affected matches. While the senior side was sidelined, the Cutters’ junior teams took to the field against the CQ Capras, securing wins in the Harvey Norman U19s, Mal Meninga Cup, and Cyril Connell Cup. The Harvey Norman U17s struggled against a dominant Capras outfit.
Harvey Norman U19s – Cutters 28 def. Capras 12
The Cutters U19 women controlled the match from the outset, running in multiple tries to secure a 28-12 victory. Mackay’s forwards created momentum up the middle, allowing their backs to break through the Capras’ defensive line and convert their chances into points.
Harvey Norman U17s – Capras 28 def. Cutters 0
The U17s were unable to recover from a tough first half, trailing 16-0 at the break before the Capras piled on more points to claim a 28-0 win. Mackay struggled to gain attacking traction against a well-organised Capras side that dominated field position and possession.
Mal Meninga Cup – Cutters 28 def. Capras 18
A strong second-half performance secured the Cutters a 28-18 win in the Mal Meninga Cup. Leading 18-12 at halftime, Mackay tightened up its defence and capitalised on key attacking opportunities to shut down the Capras' comeback attempt.
Cyril Connell Cup – Cutters 26 def. Capras 16
The Cutters' Cyril Connell Cup side staged an impressive second-half turnaround to overcome a 10-16 deficit at the break, keeping the Capras scoreless in the final 35 minutes to secure a 26-16 victory. Improved defensive pressure and disciplined set completions proved the difference as Mackay controlled the tempo in the second half.

Sailability has started up again this February and they’re putting out the call for any sailor and their carer to come down to the Whitsunday Sailing Club and try out sailing on the beautiful Whitsunday waters. Sailability gives the joys of freedom on the waters to people with disabilities, teaching the basics of sailing, boat and water safety, and helping to discover positive interactions between participants and the ocean.
"It's just really exciting for them. Sometimes they'll go out for a couple of sails or in the motor boat. As soon as they know the barbecue is happening, the smell of the sausages, they want to come in and have some to eat." General Assistant Karen explained, saying its really up to the clients and how they would like to participate.
Sailability is run by volunteers from all over some staying short-term and others like Jenny have been there volunteering for 12yrs now. And with some clients coming all the way from Bowen to participate in their sailing program, they're calling for more volunteers and sponsors to help give their clients this wonderful experience.
For many of the volunteers its about giving back, "as volunteers, we feel so good that we've given them that experience and the rewards, you just see the smiles on their faces. It's just wonderful." says Karen, "We teach them how to sail. Some can sail themselves, but we still have the skipper with them. They're learning new things all the time."
For parents like Jennifer Graetz and her son Robbie, Sailabiliy provides them with a chance to socialise and feel normal, "as a parent, being able to be accepted the way that we have, it's just been incredible. These people are just beautiful people, and what they give to the community is a great opportunity. I don't even really know how to express in words what it is to Robbie and to our family."
If you would like to volunteer, there are many positions open, from vessel operators to administration, all help is welcomed, they provide training! If you or your partner have a disability or are physically challenged in any way, or are a carer of someone who is, reserve your spot with the team by calling: 0499 835 111 or inquiring on their website: www.sailabilitywhitsunday.org or Facebook page, and get some wind in your sails!

How great is it to live in paradise? This week's bowls has certainly been filled with excitement.
Firstly, on Tuesday morning, in bowls, Carol Crosbie's team, with Hubble Noel at lead and Sandra Argo at second, triumphed over Joan McGrath’s team, which included Sue Dakin at lead and Dawn Dowell at second. Meanwhile, John Brown's team, with Mel Fennel at lead and husband Greg at second, drew with John Fielding's team of Sue Walker at lead and Gen Passfield.
Wednesday afternoon's Jackpot bowls were quieter than usual, likely due to the Open Men's Singles and the completion of last year's Mixed Pairs and Fours events. However, John Fielding's team of Phil O'Brien and Warren Williams proved the strongest on the day, with the jackpot remaining unclaimed.
In the Men's Singles first round, Russell Jackson, Alan Pershouse, Ash Warland, Bob McMahon, Shane Spann, Rick Galea, Harry Quod, Luke Kinnear, Arthur McManus, and Dennis Donnadelli all progressed to Round 2.
On Saturday morning, Scroungers saw first-round winners Margo Stanley, Andy McDougall, Tony Whitehorn, and Maureen Barnard play off for the final. Despite starting with a -5 score, Margo Stanley overwhelmed the competition to claim her second victory in this event, while Merve Stewart won B Division.
Sunday afternoon's Social Bowls saw Tony Whitehorn's team, with Bill Gordon in fine form and Sue Dakin proving too strong, dominate the field.
At the same time, the final game of the Mixed Fours was taking place between Andrew Butler's team (Dawn Dowell, Elaine Kippen, and Andy McDougall) and Shane Spann's team (Keith Bates, substituting for John Trembath, with Vicki Spann and Joan McGrath). In a spine-tingling match, Andrew Butler's team emerged victorious by just one point.
The Women and Girls come and try lawn bowls program, sponsored by the Queensland Government Sport and Rec is running on Thursday 13th March at 5pm -6pm.

The Cannonvale Cannons wrapped up a big weekend of racing, starting with the annual Club Championships on Saturday. This highly anticipated event saw swimmers competing in five set races within their age group to battle for the Age Champion title. A season highlight, this event offered a real race-day setup while maintaining the supportive and spirited environment of club competition. Club Champs not only provide a platform for intense racing but also serve as one of the final opportunities for swimmers to qualify for end-of-year club trophies and records.
Coaches Mark Erickson and Ken Crittenden were left in awe by the exceptional performances across all age groups. Out of the 285 swims recorded on the day, a staggering 186 were personal bests—an incredible testament to the swimmers' dedication and consistent training over the past year. A special mention goes to the club’s younger swimmers, who fearlessly tackled distances they had never attempted before.
The club now looks ahead to the End-of-Year Presentation Night on May 3, where these remarkable achievements, amongst others from throughout the season will be celebrated.
The excitement continued on Sunday at the Whitsunday Short Course Transition Meet in Collinsville. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first competition held at the newly renovated 25m short-course pool, replacing the former unique 33m length pool. Swimmers had the exciting opportunity to set brand-new pool records, and many Cannons rose to the occasion.
Congratulations to Charlie and Evie Doherty, Ruby and Koa Harland, Mackenzie Bennet, Andie and Dylan Reynolds, Eloise and Harry Chegwidden, Isaac and Isabella Pisaniello, and Miranda Palmero, who all claimed new pool records at the meet.
With such an outstanding weekend of racing, the Cannons continue to prove that hard work and dedication pay off as they prepare for the final events of the season.

When most people think of visiting South Africa, they imagine spotting the local wildlife that includes the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo. But Micky Kimpton, race director of the Coral Sea Resort Marina Airlie Beach Triathlon, has something else in mind.
At 71 years, Micky is no stranger to a challenge. He’s about to take on his sixth Ironman triathlon in five years, and this time, his swim will have a much larger adversary than his fellow triathletes. He’s heading to Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa next month, and while most competitors are focused on finishing the gruelling race, Micky has one more thing on his mind: adding a Great White Shark to his personal wildlife list.
"I figured, if I’m going to be swimming in open water, I may as well make it interesting," Micky says with his signature grin. "I’ve got the lions and leopards sorted in my bucket list. Now it’s time for something a little more... toothy."
The South African Ironman is no easy feat. It’s a brutal event that involves a 3.8 km swim, followed by a 180 km bike ride and a full 42.2 km marathon. The swim takes place in the chilly waters of Nelson Mandela Bay, a place renowned not only for its great swimming conditions, but also for its healthy population of Great White Sharks.
Micky has managed to add a little extra danger to the mix. "I’m hoping to add ‘shark-watching’ to my list of hobbies," he quips. "But don’t worry, I’ll stick to the official swim course and leave the wildlife to the experts."
Micky's not just doing this for fun. As the race director of the Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival, Micky's been a driving force behind growing the event into one of the Whitsundays' premier races, and his passion for the sport is contagious. His philosophy? Age is just a number, and there’s no finish line for true dedication.
"Competing in these Ironman races has taught me patience, discipline, and the ability to laugh at myself when I’m swimming alongside a shark," he jokes. "But in all seriousness, it’s about showing that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to push yourself."
“I also love giving back to the sport and as race director for this year’s 25th Anniversary the Coral Sea marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon will have a new bike course for all distances!
Whether Micky crosses the Ironman finish line with a medal around his neck or an "I survived a shark" badge, we know one thing for sure—his legend will only grow. It’s not just the triathlons he’s conquering; it’s also inspiring others to embrace their own challenges, whatever they may be.
