Whilst we all yearn for the overhead cover to be completed on our bowls green, we lament on the damage done caused by firstly the heat associated with North Queensland weather and now the cyclonic conditions have saturated the carpet and no play was possible this week and with fingers crossed we are all praying that the system dissipates as soon as possible and all stay safe.

With no games to report on, the club wants to acknowledge the fantastic assistance and proof that anything is possible, no matter the to attain success. This applies to a wonderful couple, married of 27 years, Russel and Diane Jackson who are absolute superstars providing us all with inspiration.

Russell has never let his deafness be a disability and has achieved wonderful success in disability games, winning Deaf Bowler for Queensland in 1923 and 1924, as well as pairs success with Noel Crosbie. Russell has won the 2021 Men's A Division Singles, the 2019/2020 B Division Pairs, and the 2019 Open Men's Triples. From 2018 to 2024, he was part of the Men's Open 2-Bowl Triples team, a fantastic feat. He was also the 2019 to 2021 Men's Open Fours champion and the 2019 Mixed Triples champion.
Diane Jackson is the Ladies Secretary of our club, and although she suffers from hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, a very rare condition that caused her medical discharge after 27 years in the RAAF, she has excelled. She progressed from Supply Clerk to Health and Safety Chemical Projects Manager and performed admirably in the Armed Forces Olympic Games, winning 2 Gold Medals in 2024. Di has also won the 2018 Novice Ladies Singles Championship and the 2023 B Division Pairs Championship. She is truly a legend in our club.

Cannonvale Cannons swimmer Jacob Bell has made a memorable departure from the club, setting an astonishing 12 club records in the 18 & Over category at the recent carnival. As he prepares to leave for university, his achievements serve as a fitting farewell to over 12 years of dedication to the Cannons.

Jacob’s leadership and commitment to training have set a high standard for younger swimmers. His disciplined approach and passion for open-water swimming have been an inspiration to his teammates. As he now heads to James Cook University to study Occupational Therapy, his presence in the squad will be greatly missed and the club wish him all the best in his next chapter.
Club Night on Wednesday also saw a wave of upgrades awarded to 15 swimmers following their outstanding carnival performances. Congratulations to Jax and Miller Eaves, Gracie Crichton, Ella Chammaa, Faithlyn Trotter, Declan and Maeve Dichiera, Koa Harland, Evie Doherty, Roxy Groom, Pippa Laguna, Billie Jamieson, Miranda Palmero, Levi Smith, Ella Maddock, and Harris Delac.
A special mention goes to Harris Delac, who secured an impressive upgrade to the 800m Freestyle. This came after his phenomenal 400m swim at the carnival, clocking 5:35.10. Harris’ freestyle talents have been on full display, as he also shattered his 200m Freestyle time at last week’s Club Night with a huge 11.45-second personal best, touching the wall in 2:40.47. His performance earned him not only the Coaches Award but also the coveted Chocolate Award.
Other club members who set records at the carnival included Levi Smith, Lucas Korosec, Jax Clayworth, Harry Chegwidden, Eloise Chegwidden, and Tora Delac.

In competition news, the Townsville Tourist Carnival was cancelled due to the recent weather events. The Cannons now turn their focus to the Queensland Sprint Championships next weekend, where they aim to continue their strong performances.

The weather has caused significant disruption to upcoming and scheduled fixtures, so there will be an update to the fixture calendar once the weather clears up and normal play can resume.
On Tuesday 28th, the competition was a Single Stableford event. In the men's competition, Bailey Hayward emerged as the winner with 37 points, edging out Pascal Neunreuther on a countback. Pascal, who finished as runner-up, played a solid round as well. In the ladies' competition, Pam Harrison claimed victory with a score of 27 points, while Di Chard finished as the runner-up with 26 points. Peter Lindsay earned a 2-shot win on the 9th hole, and Brock Smith was the winner of the Nearest to the Pin competition on the 9th hole.
The competition on Wednesday 29th was also a Single Stableford event, but only the front 9 holes were played due to the weather. In the ladies' competition, Jenny Hounsell took the win with 19 points, while Lyn Muller was the runner-up with 16 points, winning on a countback over third-place finisher Pauline Redpath. The Nearest to the Pin awards on Wednesday went to Di Chard and Pauline Redpath on the 2nd hole, and Jenny Hounsell and Pauline Redpath on the 6th hole.
Unfortunately, the rain persisted, and the course was closed for the rest of the week. Proserpine has been luckier than those to the north of us, but for now, everybody simply has to wait for the weather to improve and the course to dry out before resuming normal play.

On a soggy Tuesday, only 21 players braved the elements to take part in the competition. Initially, it looked like we’d be restricted to just 9 holes, but the weather held out, allowing us to complete the full 18. Despite the wet conditions, some impressive scores were posted, though with the current weather pattern, it remains uncertain when we’ll be able to tee off again.
In the Ladies Division Jenny Hounsell continued her strong form, claiming victory for the second week in a row with an excellent 32 points. Pam Harrison secured second place with 27 points, while Paula McQuat rounded out the rundown with 25 points.
For the Men's Division Pascal Neunreuther was the standout, winning with 37 points. Peter Lindsay followed closely in second with 35 points. The rundown was competitive, with Larry Muller and Gary Scotford finishing on 33 points, and Trevor Paroz coming in close with 32 points. Followed by Barry Mortimer and John Roser both with 30 points, and Laurie Dakin with 29 points.
In pin shots, the ladies, Jenny Hounsell, Beryl Nosworthy and Pam Harrison each earning 2. On the men’s side, John Roser, Peter Lindsay, Pascal Neunreuther, and Gary Scotford all claimed pin shots. On the day Pam Harrison, Vickie Wallace, Ken Granger, and Peter Lindsay (twice) made wonderful chip-ins.
Finally, to celebrate Gary Scotford won the Membership Jackpot Draw, taking home $40, and Peter Lindsay was the lucky winner of the Raffle. Everyone is looking forward to the next round, weather permitting!

AFL Mackay is gearing up for another exciting season of Junior and Youth football, with registrations now open for all players aged U9.5 to U17.5. Dave Moore, co-founder and spokesperson for the Central Queensland Blokart Club, says blokarting offers an unbeatable combination of fun, camaraderie, and adventure.

“Blokarting has all the joy of sailing, but it’s on land, making it more accessible to everyday people. Like any sport, you can keep it affordable or spend tens of thousands on top-tier carbon gear. At the end of the day, it’s about having fun and enjoying the community,” Dave explains.

Blokarts, also known as land yachts, are wind-powered vehicles with a sail mounted on a lightweight frame that rides on three wheels. The sport is simple to pick up but endlessly thrilling as riders harness the power of the wind to glide along sandy beaches, race friends, or simply enjoy the ride.

“These ‘Come and Try’ days are all about introducing the public to our very enjoyable sport,” Dave says.

“We’ll provide tuition with experienced instructors, and all you need to bring is a pushbike helmet, enclosed shoes (crocs are acceptable), and a sense of adventure. If you don’t have a helmet, we’ll have loan ones available.”

The events are family-friendly, though teenagers under 18 will require a parent or designated carer onsite to sign a consent form, as per public liability requirements.

The Girls Only Hub program for 5-10-year-olds is set to begin on February 10, offering young girls an exciting opportunity to explore cricket in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Led by female coaches, the program focuses on building confidence, skills, and a love for the sport in a space designed just for girls.

Great Barrier Reef Arena Sports Development Officer Mel Dwyer highlighted the importance of such initiatives, stating, “The girls-only program is a great opportunity for girls to come and experience cricket in a safe and inclusive environment.  

“They can feel comfortable and confident without the pressures that sometimes arise in co-ed settings. It ensures that girls have a space where they can thrive and enjoy the sport.

Ms Dwyer also noted the participants' enthusiasm, saying, “The girls love being coached by older juniors who play in our local comps.  

“Nothing is off limits; dancing, cartwheels and lots of other fun things are added into the skill-based sessions. Girls rock up with the biggest smiles, wanting to tell me about doing their bowling homework, suggesting a warm-up activity and telling me how much they love cricket.”

Junior cricket has already kicked off, with Stage 1, 2, and 3 teams back in action from January 18. The race to the semi-finals on February 15 is heating up, with teams vying for spots. Masters Blasters also resumed on January 22, alongside the GBR Rays Blaster Hub Program, which continues for boys and girls on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30pm.

Mackay’s newest swimming sensation, the Northern Stars Swimming Club Inc., is making waves in the region’s competitive swimming scene, delivering impressive results while fostering a love for the sport.

With a focus on developing talent at all levels, the club offers three squad programs—Mini, Junior, and Senior—catering to swimmers of different ages and abilities.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Steve Arnold, Northern Stars aims to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for swimmers to achieve their personal bests.

“We welcome new members to join our journey,” said club secretary Ally Bexton, encouraging interested families to reach out for more information.

The club’s swimmers have recently showcased their talent at various meets, starting with the Mirani Swimming Club Swim Meet held at the Mirani Aquatic Centre, where athletes took home an impressive haul of medals and ribbons.

Nathaniel Espartinez has emerged as one of the club’s standout athletes, achieving remarkable results at several competitions. At the GBR Swim Meet held at the Mackay Aquatic Recreation Complex, Nathaniel brought home an incredible collection of medals, including gold in the 400m Freestyle, 200m IM, and 50m Backstroke. He continued to dominate at the Somerville House LC Prep Meet in Brisbane, taking gold in the 200m IM and bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.

Alongside his brother, Isaiah, Nathaniel also represented Northern Stars at the Road Trip to Kardinia Meet hosted by the Colac Swimming Club in Geelong, Melbourne, competing against Victoria’s best and adding more medals to their tallies. Nathaniel earned a gold medal in the 50m Butterfly for the 13-year-old boys’ division and also won two silvers and a bronze, while Isaiah also won a silver and a bronze.

Young swimmer Amelia also left a mark at the GBR Swim Meet in Mackay, proving that determination and passion can outshine even the toughest competition, by taking home a swag of medals. Meanwhile, Tyler, who only recently took up competitive swimming at 14, impressed at the Mirani Swimming Club Meet in Mirani, securing two first-place finishes and several personal bests.

Rising stars Daniel, Gryff, Jai, and Matthew also brought home medals and accolades from recent competitions. Daniel earned two gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze at the Mirani Swimming Club Swim Meet, while Gryff took home a ribbon for every race he entered at the same meet. Jai competed at the Pelican Waters LC Meet and delivered a huge personal best in the 200m Individual Medley, securing third place.

At the Moranbah Highlanders Swim Meet, Tyler, Reid, and Daniel triumphed in the PB Challenge, with Reid securing first place, Daniel claiming third, and Tyler also securing third place.

Matthew represented the club at the Emerald Seals - Emerald Amateur Swimming Club Swim Meet, where he earned two gold medals and one silver and was crowned overall age champion.

The Northern Stars Swimming Club continues to grow, with each meet affirming its commitment to nurturing talent and achieving results. For those ready to dive into the sport, the Northern Stars are ready to welcome you to their constellation of success.

The Mackay Regional Council-sponsored Australia Day “Come and Try Bridge Day” was a great success. Members and enthusiastic community participants gathered to enjoy morning tea, a sausage lunch and a wonderful day filled with cards and friendship. President Frances Brown expressed her delight at the strong turnout and encouraged attendees, as well as anyone interested in learning Bridge, to join the beginners' lessons starting Wednesday, 12 February, at 6:30pm at the Bridge Club, 414 Shakespeare Street…But be warned! You will make new friends, have serious fun and become addicted to the world’s most popular card game.

A large roll-up of 84 bowlers took part in the Monday public holiday fun-packed afternoon of mixed bowls. The day was well represented by both men’s and ladies' committee members, ensuring the day was successful, and bowlers were treated to pies, sausage rolls, lamingtons and an ice-cold beer to top the day off. Congratulations to the prize winners and those who dressed up to the Aussie theme!

The 2024/2025 Shawn’s Summer Biathlon Splash & Dash Series concluded on Australia Day, with athletes and volunteers coming together to honour former Mackay Road Runners champion Shawn Claydon, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2018. Shawn’s legacy was celebrated with the attendance of his sister, Sharon Stewart-Harris, and her husband, Jeff, who supported the event.

Held as an off-season training opportunity, the series welcomed not only club members but also newcomers and those seeking a fun and informal swim/run experience.

The series finale was well-attended, even as many Tri-Activ8 athletes competed in the Moranbah Aquathon on the same day. Awards were presented to top performers, with Nikki Giles named the overall winner for track and pool laps, though she was unable to attend the final event. Random draw prizes, including 2025 calendars featuring series photos, added to the fun of the finale.

Looking ahead, the Mackay Road Runners formal 2025 season kicks off on Sunday, January 16, with the club set to appear at the Mackay Regional Council Sports Expo on Sunday, January 9.

As summer’s oppressive humidity continues, the club reminds everyone to stay hydrated and maintain sensible training schedules. Meanwhile, an informal social 5/10km run will be held this Sunday at 4:30pm, starting from the Bluewater Quay. Participants are welcome to join free of charge, with post-run refreshments available for purchase at the Red Dog. Bring your own hydration and energy needs, and enjoy the camaraderie of Mackay’s running community!

South Suburban Bowls Club has kicked off social bowls for 2025 and is welcoming both new and returning players to join in the fun.

On January 16th, 30 ladies braved the heat, staying well hydrated and showing great determination as they played in the first Ladies Social Day of the year. Maryann Harrigan, President of the Ladies Section, was pleased to see so many ladies that were eager to get back on the green and called the day a success.

For 2025, South Suburban Bowls is offering four days of social bowls opportunities:
Tuesday Bowls – 1pm start, 2 games, self-selected triples.
Wednesday Bowls – 9am start, format varies depending on numbers.
Thursday Bowls – 1pm start, social bowls.
Friday Bowls – 2pm start, self-selected 3 bowls jackpot pairs.

The Cannonvale Swim Centre, located at the Cannonvale State School swimming pool provides a variety of programs designed to cater to swimmers of all abilities. Whether you're looking to improve your technique, get fit, or simply have fun, there's something for everyone.
The training sessions focus on fitness for all swimming strokes, and swimmers can also enjoy meeting new people and having fun in the water. Senior swimmers particularly enjoy a game or two of water polo on Friday afternoons, this is a great way to combine fitness and socialising.
For adults, the Cannonvale Swim Centre offers tailored training sessions led by qualified coaches. These coaches design personalised programs to meet the varying needs, goals, and abilities of each swimmer, whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, train for a triathlon, or learn to swim.
In addition to regular training, the centre also offers Aqua Classes on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings, providing an effective and enjoyable low-impact workout.
The Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Club has been an integral part of the community for almost 30 years, offering a family-friendly environment where swimmers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to achieve their best.
The club promotes a healthy learning environment, where inclusion and support are key aspects of teaching and training.
The Cannonvale Swim Centre offers a variety of lessons to cater to different abilities, including private lessons and small group sessions. The staff is supportive and encouraging, adjusting programs to meet individual needs and ensuring an inclusive environment for all swimmers.
Swimming offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits. It’s a low-impact sport, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels, while also building strength, toning muscles, improving cardiovascular fitness, and enhancing flexibility. Swimmers also experience better coordination, balance, and posture.
Beyond the physical, swimming helps improve cognitive skills, boost confidence, and promote better mental health. It’s also a wonderful way to socialise and build friendships through teamwork.
The coaching team at Cannonvale Swim Centre is highly experienced. Head coaches Mark Erickson and Ken Crittenden have been coaching at Cannonvale for nearly 30 years and have trained swimmers who’ve qualified for both the Queensland and Australian Age Swimming Championships.
While they’ve worked with competitive swimmers, they also take great pride in helping swimmers of all levels reach their goals and enjoy the sport. Giselle Burton, who coordinates the Learn to Swim program, also plays a vital role in the Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Club, serving as Club Secretary.
The Cannonvale Swim Centre operates year-round, with training sessions and activities available before and after school and on weekends. The Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Club holds Club Nights and carnivals from August to April, and new swimmers and their families are always welcome to join in. Club Nights take place on Wednesday evenings at 5 pm, providing a fun and competitive environment for all.
The Swim Centre also works in close partnership with the school, providing lessons during the day, while also offering activities before and after school and on weekends.
