Bowen Athletics Carnival Sets Record Pace

Bowen Athletics Carnival Sets Record Pace

The annual Bowen Athletics Carnival was held on the 30th and 31st May with athletes representing clubs from far and wide. After representing North Queensland at the last two school state championships in Long Jump, local athlete Joel Walker is going ahead in leaps and bounds in Triple Jump. At the Mackay Athletics Carnival last May in his first Triple Jump official competition, Joel broke a long-standing carnival record for 12 year old boys with a hop skip and jump of 8.91 metres. Later that year in June at the Bowen Athletics Carnival he landed two jumps of 10.04 metres being just 1cm off the 12 year old boys Carnival Record in Bowen. This year, with his sights firmly set on the 13-year-old Men’s Triple Jump, Joel delivered in spades breaking the previous mark of 10.83 metres set in 2015 with an 11.11 metre landing. He also took out the Long Jump event with 3 remarkably consistent jumps of 4.78m, 4.77m and 4.78m. Joel now heads to the Festival of Athletics in Townsville on the June 13th weekend and then onto the Local School and Whitsunday trials with a goal of making the North Queensland side again this year for long jump and triple jump and possibly tetrathlon disciplines. A big thank you to the Muir and Thicker families and all the Bowen Athletics Club committee and volunteers for their time and tireless efforts making the carnival and local athletics such a success. Bowen Athletic Club day is held Saturdays from 2pm and training is Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. New members are welcome with further details on the club facebook page. 2024 Don River Dash

September 12, 2024

Last weekend over 230 bikes and 89 cars hit the long dirt track around the Don River to compete in the 2024 Don River Dash.

Congratulations to Kent Battle for winning the car category, and to Liam Walsh for winning the overall event three years in a row, solidifying his title as ‘King of the River’.

Co-event organiser and Burdekin Offroaders president Michael Martson said the weekend went to plan and he is looking forward to next year.

“All the competitors were happy and next year is going to be massive,” said Michael.

“We have competitors’ country wide that couldn’t be with us this year, saying they will be here next year.”

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Colins said the 2024 Don River Dash was another huge success and the event had grown in leaps and bounds since the inaugural Dash in 2019.

An Action Packed 2024 Don River Dash

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins said, “The Don River Dash is the pinnacle of off-road racing in our region and is now recognised as the best off-road race on the East Coast.”

“The event has grown in popularity since the inaugural event in 2019 and this year organisers have forecast 400 open competitor entries and crowds of over 5000 spectators.

“It is exciting that the 2024 event drew crowds of over 5000 spectators to watch the best off-road racing on the East Coast which is a real feather in the cap for the organisers and volunteers of this event and an amazing economic boost for our region over the event’s four days.

“Council’s Economic Development team have run the numbers through the economic benefit calculator and direct impact on the region’s economy is over $7 million.

“I am proud that Whitsunday Regional Council has been a financial supporter since day one and this year supported the event with $20,000 in-kind support to assist the organisers as they continue to expand and grow the event further.

“I am confident that this event will continue to become a hallmark event for our unique part of the world and add another bow to making the Whitsunday a great place to visit.”

Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy said it was great to see the Don River Dash growing in popularity each year.

“From what started as a small community event just six years ago, this is now a major driver for tourism in the region with people travelling from all over Australia,” said Leanne.

“Businesses in Bowen and throughout the entire region benefit from the influx of visitors with many checking out other parts of the Whitsundays during their stay.”

The full-day event provided expert coaching aimed at enhancing their swimming technique and overall performance.

The swimmers engaged in specialised pace and technique sessions, focusing on refining their strokes. A physiotherapist was present to assess their flexibility, ensuring the athletes maintain the necessary range of motion for peak performance in the pool. Additionally, the swimmers learned how to use trigger balls, a crucial tool for relieving muscle tension and aiding recovery. The day wrapped up with a yoga session designed to improve body awareness and concentration. It was a highly productive day for all involved, offering invaluable learning opportunities to boost their swimming prowess.
Special thanks go to Barry Prime from Swimming Queensland and Theresa Manning from Swimming North Queensland for organizing this outstanding clinic, which provided such valuable development for our swimmers.

Cricket Fever Hits Mackay
AUSTRALIA VS NEW ZEALAND WOMEN’S T20 SERIES

Australia’s champion women cricketers are gearing up for the highly anticipated T20 matches at Great Barrier Reef Arena (GBRA) in Mackay as they prepare to defend their title at the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.
With two key matches against New Zealand on the 19th and 22nd of September, these season openers serve as crucial preparation for the reigning T20 World Cup champions, who have dominated the tournament with six wins out of eight since 2009.
Star international Beth Mooney expressed the team's excitement about returning to Mackay.

“Great Barrier Reef Arena has created some fantastic memories for me and the team, particularly from the one day international series victory against India just a few years back,” Mooney said.
“It’s a great venue, the crowds are brilliant and the atmosphere really helps to lift our performance.
“I can’t wait to kick off the new season with these two games against New Zealand, they will be hard fought and we are looking forward to bringing our best game to Mackay in September.
“It will be the perfect lead-in to our T20 World Cup campaign and I have no doubt that everyone will be switched on and raring to play.”
Mooney has enjoyed significant success at the venue, including a score of 125 not out to see Australia home in a last ball One Day thriller against India in 2021.
She has long since attracted a legion of admirers in Mackay through her WBBL exploits in the regional Queensland centre. In her time with the Brisbane Heat, Mooney made a feast of runs to cement her reputation as a local favourite.
Great Barrier Reef Arena was officially opened in May 2023 and made possible through the combined investment of the Federal and Queensland Governments.
Plans are currently well advanced for Stage 2 of the Arena, which comprises a major regional multisport training and event centre, including purpose-built facilities for athletes of all abilities.

Tickets for both the Great Barrier Reef Arena games are available for purchase online now through Cricket Australia.
