Things are now back to normal at the club, after the Barrier Reef Congress last weekend.
We would like to thank all our sponsors who supported us to put on the Barrier Reef Congress - Mackay Regional Council, Dalrymple Bay, TBIB, Paul Lavings, North Marine, SH Tait & Co, Officeworks, Mackay and Whitsunday Life newspaper and Mackay Tourism.
Friend of the club, Maria Setiyawan headed back to Brisbane after lots of bridge, laughter and catching up with old friends at the bridge table on her trip.
Despite adversaries at the table, many great friendships can be made playing bridge. The club is friendly and encouraging of players new to the game and the Mackay area.

Mackay Rowing Club is basking in the glow of success as its members make waves at the National Rowing Championships in Tasmania. With a display of skill and determination, four of the club's athletes have given it their all at the prestigious Lake Barrington International Rowing Course. Richard McGrath, Therese Clancy, Jane Deguara, and Michael Wolhfahrt demonstrated exceptional teamwork and prowess as they powered through the waters.
Teaming up with Pinerivers Rowing Club, Mackay's rowers secured a victory in the Ladies G quad event, claiming the coveted gold medal.
In the Ladies G Double event, they clinched the silver medal, showcasing their versatility and skill, and in the Women's F Double event, they seized another gold medal with Riverway Rowing Club, the ladies reaffirming their dominance on the water.
But the accolades don't end there. Mackay Rowing Club had another reason to celebrate, as Therese Clancy emerged as a National Masters Rowing Champion. With a stellar performance in the Ladies Lightweight G Single event, Clancy clinched the gold medal, further solidifying her status as a formidable force in masters rowing.
This triumphant journey follows the club's remarkable success at the State Masters Championships at Lake Wyaralong, where the quartet amassed an impressive tally of 18 medals. With each stroke and each race, Mackay Rowing Club continues to raise the bar and showcase the strength and talent of its athletes.

Looping Lily Wins Trio Of Titles In Townsville
Mackay players came home with outstanding results from the Townsville Open table tennis championships.
Emma Widdup and her daughter Lily Boland led the way with five titles between them, while young Remy Zhan won a title in his first tournament.
Emma won the women's open singles and the over 50 women's, while Lily won the 1100 singles, U19 and U17 girls.

Wednesday afternoon Jackpot bowls saw a good roll up with some great games being played with Tony Whitehorn’s team leading Lu Rogan and second Rick Galea run away winners from the rest of the field, however the Jackpot never went off . 

Friday Morning the Endeavour Foundation disabled group came for their bowls lesson and showed that with practice they could represent our area in the disability games October 2025.

Saturday morning Scroungers saw Russell Jackson, Eric Barnard and Arthur McManus first round winners, with Eric Barnard in hot form and the big winner of the day.

On Wednesday, Ladies winner was Elona Lynch with 37 points, runner up was Anne McGowan with 33 points. Men’s winner was Alix Webb with 41 points, runner up Ross Petersen on 37 points.
 
On Friday, the ladies hosted the Bowen ladies open with 82 players taking to the course. Congratulations to Sheree Hasson from Nudgee who was the winner on the day with 71 gross score.
 
Saturday was the Men’s B & C grade open. Frank Bidgood was the B Grade gross winner after a 3-hole playoff, Gross runner up Carlo Manno, Nett winner Tate McGrath, Nett runner up Greg Carlyon. 

Sunday was the Men’s A & A1 Grade open. A Grade winner Scott Sibson with a great score of 4 under for 27 holes. Gross runner up Adam McGrath, Nett winner Jason Scott, Nett runner up Brendan Nott. A1 grade winner Bradley Fleet, Gross runner up Ryley Malone, Nett winner Colin Carvolth, Nett runner up Justyn Durbin.

The drizzle stayed away long enough on the Labour Day Monday to allow Ryan Wilkes to notch up three bogeys, one eagle and seven birdies for a fantastic forty stableford points after his plus two handicap was applied. Two adrift was Levi Holmes. Pins went to Toni Clauss, Brent Franke, and Ryan Wilkes got the other two.

Nathan Holohan won Thursday's competition in very damp conditions with a creditable 39 points: two ahead of Ash Morley-Hart.

On Sunday Brett Bauer edgede out Patrick Conen on 35 points with the pins going to Nathan Holohan and Ash Law with two.

Whitsunday Sea Eagles hit the road to Bakers Creek on Saturday to take on the Tigers in Seniors and Under 17s while Under 12s and 14s had a bye.

Senior Men Won 45 – 37
Sea Eagles Senior Men were back on the winners list this week with a hard fought win over Bakers Creek Tigers. The high pressure contest ended with Sea Eagles surviving a late challenge to hold on for their second win of the year. Jake Smith, Alex Rodgers and Ryan Mansfield were rock solid in defence whilst Xander Hall was strong in the ruck. Billy Galpin and Billy Gardner worked hard in the midfield to get the ball forward throughout the game. Brent Downie took an absolute screamer which will no doubt win mark of the year.

11 bridge players from the Bowen Bridge Club and two from Airlie Beach Bridge Club competed over four days in Mackay in one of the premier congresses in Queensland, Barrier Reef Congress.

Two new Bowen players  were winners in the Novice section under 50 points, congratulations to Bev Lowcock and her partner Jill Brabon. 

Linda Priday from Airlie Beach Club and her partner Joy Brunette from the Mackay Bridge Club took 3rd place in the Novice section.

Another rainy week saw Tuesday's stableford competition won by Jonny Brooks with 36 points, one ahead of Adam Maggs. Jonny Brooks, Adam Maggs and Matthew Muller won the pin shots.

Ned Davies had 36 points to win Thursday's competition by four shots from Bailey Neumann. Pascal Neunreuther won the pin shot.

Friday's Met run saw Brendan Spann score 21 points to beat Mark Thompson by two shots; and Ryan Wilkes won the pin shot.

Bailey Hayward took out Saturday's RGH monthly medal with a nett 68 and beat his C grade colleague Vic Feldman by a shot. Matthew Goldman edged out Clay Coles on 69 nett for the B grade medal. Jason Bourke had 71 nett to beat Nick Watson by a shot in the A division, and Tina Badenhorst edged out Jacqueline Wall with 77 nett in the ladies' division. Jason Bourke, Matthew Goldman and Bailey Hayward had the best gross scores in each grade. Pins went to Vic Feldman, Bailey Hayward, Jason Bourke, Brian Allen, Tina Badenhorst and Robyn Whitham.

Sunday's monthly medal winner was Brent Franke a fine 66 nett in beating Finbar O'Flynn by four shots. Robyn Whitham edged out Tiina Randmae with 77 nett for the ladies' medal. Pins went to Paul Gray, Scott Lee, Pamela Casey, Diane Chard, Penny Wardroper and Tom O'Brien.

Whitsunday golfers bit the bullet, took on the PGC course, it was still quite wet after recent rain, to play the May MM and least putts. The weather stayed dry for the morning and the sun broke through towards the end of the game for the 16 competitors.

The Cannonvale Cannons hosted their last Club Night for the 2023-2024 season.

The Cannons would like to commend the 5 swimmers who have set new Club Records over the past month.  Congratulations to Jax Clayworth (10 yrs) for setting 25 metre Butterfly record, Ehsan Helou (15yrs) for setting 50 metre & 100 metre Breaststroke records, Jacob Bell (17yrs) for setting 200 metre IM & 800 metre Freestyle records and Jy Parkinson (18 yrs) for 50 metre Butterfly record.

Amanda Camm MP visited the Cannons on Wednesday night and presented club awards.  Amanda presented Matilda Nicholes, Celeste Orenshaw, Sophie Palmero, Abi Maher, Tiana Bell, Don Algie, and Zach Trefz with Upgrade Certificates.  Amanda also presented the Chocolate awards to Zach Trefz and Jack Ganter for their awesome PBs.  Amanda also presented Stella Mulliss (5 yrs) with the Coaches Award for her 12 metre Backstroke.  

During the week, four Cannonvale swimmers were named in the NQ School team for water polo. The Cannons would like to wish Holly Perrin, Jacob Bell, Tiana Bell and Tane Dennison the best of luck at the Queensland Championships.  

Over the weekend, Don Algie travelled to Cairns to compete at the NQ Games. Don’s best swims include:  silver medal in the 50 metre Breaststroke in a time of 44.22 seconds (a 1.52 second PB) and bronze medal swims in 50 metre Butterfly (with 3.10 second PB) and 200 metre Freestyle (3.78 second PB).  Congratulations, Don!

Cannonvale swimmers continue to keep up their swimming for their fitness, while others have their sights on a Pioneer carnival or the open water/triathlon season.  The Cannonvale Cannons are looking forward to the annual Presentation Night which will be held on 1st June.
