Whitsunday Christian College’s Year 7 students took a bit of an extended field trip to Canberra, where they got a closer look at Australian democracy and plenty of stories beyond the classroom.

Day two began with views from Mount Ainslie before students tried their hand at voting during an electoral education session. A bike ride around Lake Burley Griffin encouraged some to push past their nerves, followed by visits to Geoscience Australia and Questacon.

On day three, students watched coins being made at the Royal Australian Mint and designed their own glass tiles at Canberra Glassworks.

After observing a real court case at the High Court they visited Parliament House and Federal Member of Dawson Andrew Willcox, before the kids took part in a parliamentary role-play to help prepare them to watch democracy in action, including a Senate division and voting in the House of Representatives.

Students all made sure to thank their bus driver.

On day four and final day before heading back to the Whitsundays, students toured the Australian Institute of Sport with an athlete before pausing to reflect at the Australian War Memorial.

The evening then took them outdoors for orienteering and a roll down the hill at the National Arboretum, followed by a visit to the zoo for a playful finish to their time down south.
