Celebrating Mackay’s Speech Pathologists

From helping stroke patients recover their communication skills to supporting children as they find their voice, Mackay’s speech pathologists play an important role in helping people connect, communicate and live independently.

‍

Speech Pathology Week ran from August 23rd to 29th, with Mackay Hospital and Health Service taking the opportunity to recognise the speech pathologists who support patients across the region.

‍

“From supporting someone recovering from a stroke to helping a child develop communication skills, assessing swallowing difficulties, supporting patients in critical care and finding new ways for people to communicate, speech pathologists play a vital role across our hospitals and community services.

‍

“They work alongside doctors, nurses and allied health teams to support recovery, independence and safe discharge, while also providing outreach and telehealth services to help connect people across our region.

‍

“Every patient is different, which means speech pathology is a profession built on creativity, problem-solving and connection.”

‍

This year’s Speech Pathology Week theme, Communication creates possibility, reflects the role speech pathologists play in helping people connect, learn, make choices, participate and thrive.

‍

For patients experiencing communication or swallowing difficulties, the work can be an important part of recovery and everyday life.

‍

Mackay HHS also highlighted the broad reach of the profession, with speech pathologists working across hospitals and community services and providing outreach and telehealth support to people throughout the region.
