Community Generosity for Nepal on Display

Across a busy week of fundraising, the Whitsunday Lions Club has raised about $8,100 for communities affected by devastating flash flooding in Nepal.

‍

Efforts began on Thursday with a Father’s Day stall at Bunnings, before continuing at the weekly Saturday Lions’ markets and Sunday’s Colour Fun Run at Club Whitsunday.

‍

“I’m not just proud of our club, I’m proud of Lions International and that we’re able to help Lions all over the world when there’s a crisis,” said Whitsunday Lions Club President Greg Smith.

Kathmandu Lions Club Past District Governor Ram Chhetri praised the support shown by the Whitsunday community.  

‍

"The Lions members in Nepal were overwhelmed by the support and compassion of Australians in their hour of need,” he said.  

‍

“The plan is for the Lions of Nepal to ensure that the funds get to where they are needed most and are spent wisely for the benefit of those in most need.

‍

“To this point they have been supporting the rescue teams in their efforts to find survivors, however they are now looking at how to best support the thousands of displaced and homeless survivors.”

‍

While the fundraising was organized and facilitated by the Lions club, they recognised this outstanding effort as a community-achieved goal.  

‍

“We really want to drive home that this was achieved by the community as a whole,” Greg said.
