Mackay dad Daniel Matsen had a week to remember, with both his birthday and Father’s Day falling shortly after the arrival of his newborn twins.
Little Sophia Kate Matsen arrived at 10.50pm on 26 August, followed just five minutes later by her brother Alexander Daniel. Born via emergency caesarean at 37 weeks at Mackay Base Hospital, Sophia weighed 2600 grams and Alexander 2870 grams.
Their mum, Rebecca Atherton, discovered she was expecting twins at just five weeks, a surprise that quickly turned into excitement for the couple. Twins run in both Daniel’s and Becc’s families, making the news both special and a little familiar.
Sophia and Alexander join big brother Aiden, 5, rounding out the Matsen family. Their names carry personal significance: Alexander shares his dad’s middle name, while Sophia was given Becc’s grandmother’s middle name.
After birth, Becc spent time in the Intensive Care Unit while the twins were cared for in the Special Care Nursery, but the family was soon reunited and able to head home together.
Daniel celebrated his birthday last week with the extra joy of welcoming two new children into his life, marking his first Father’s Day with the twins in addition to his role as dad to Aiden.
