A casual Sunday morning clean-up has left the gateway to Airlie Beach around 40 kilograms lighter, after three local volunteers tackled rubbish scattered across the hills along Shute Harbour Road.
On the 30th August Sacred Earth Collective filled four large sacks with waste from the roadside. Beyond improving the area’s appearance, the clean-up helped stop rubbish from entering the drainage system during heavy rain and eventually making its way into the ocean and Great Barrier Reef.
“This rubbish eventually ends up in the sea after big rains as it finds its way into the drainage system,” a representative for Sacred Earth Collective shared.
“Thanks to the 3 friends and local legends for giving an hour of their time to making an impact.”
With the wet season approaching, the group is not stopping there. Its next community clean-up will take place this Sunday 13th September, targeting several roadside and coastal areas between Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour.
“All are welcome,” the group said.
“First location will be the hills coming up into Airlie, the bends in the roads at Shute Harbour, then the beaches and mangroves down at Shute Harbour.”
