Mackay Carer Named Pyjama Angel of the Year

For five years, Heather O’Connor has been a constant in the life of a young person who has faced more change than most.

‍

Heather first began volunteering with The Pyjama Foundation in July 2021, when she was introduced to a 10-year-old boy living in out-of-home care. Since then, she has remained a steady presence in his life through changing circumstances, care arrangements and the journey from childhood into his teenage years.

‍

Earlier this week, that commitment was been recognised, with Heather named Mackay’s 2026 Pyjama Angel of the Year by The Pyjama Foundation.

What began with simple visits has grown into a meaningful relationship built around learning, creativity and connection. Heather has encouraged her Pyjama child to become a reader and taught him life skills, cooking together and undertaking hands-on projects, most recently creating a wooden loom and rug for his bedroom.

The Pyjama Foundation Founder and CEO Bronwyn Sheehan said Heather’s greatest gift was not being able to change the circumstances around the child, but simply being someone he could rely on.

Bronwyn also praised Heather for continually adapting as he grew and his circumstances changed, while never losing sight of their relationship.

Heather was presented with her award on Sunday 23^rd August at Oceans International by Bronwyn, alongside Member for Mackay Nigel Dalton MP, marking five years of an extraordinary commitment to one young person.

‍

Her recognition also highlights an ongoing need for carers within the Mackay community.

‍

According to The Pyjama Foundation, currently 23 children are in care waiting to be matched with their own special person and mentor in the region. For children navigating circumstances beyond their control, having a trusted adult who continues to show up can make a world of difference.
