Morning Fixtures Season 4 Round 1 Wrap-Up
The weather is heating up, spring has clearly started stretching its legs, and the air conditioning is officially on. That means Tuesday Morning Fixtures can now return to its natural state: players staying cool in the hall while doing their absolute best to create unnecessary emotional heat at the table.
Division 1
Division 1 opened the season with two 6–6 draws, which is a very tidy way of saying nobody wanted to blink first. Wizard Wands and Dwarf Diggers could not be separated, and Elf Elders and Orc Orcas also finished locked together. Match of the Division contender: Branko Vucurovic d. Bryan Marshall (8, -8, 4, -11, 6). Branko won the first, Bryan answered, Branko went again, Bryan dragged it to a fifth, and then Branko finally closed it out. A match that had more back-and-forth than someone trying to adjust the air conditioner temperature without admitting they are cold. Also worth a spotlight: Delma Knight d. Doug Dungavell (7, -8, 9, -7, 5). Delma and Doug traded games all the way to a decider before Delma took control in the fifth. It was the sort of match where both players appeared to agree that three games would be far too efficient for Round 1.
Division 2
Division 2 produced one close result and one strong team win, with Siren Songs edging Witch Whirls 7–5, while Knight Kicks defeated Troll Trails 8–4. Comeback of the Division: John Hamelink d. Gloria Vella (-9, -2, 10, 4, 5). Two games down and looking in serious trouble, John somehow found another setting. Not fan speed one, not fan speed two - full air-conditioned comeback mode. From there, he took the next three and completed a very determined turnaround. Five-game grit: Frank Caruana d. Helen Ware (-5, -10, 4, 7, 3) Helen took the first two games and had the match looking nicely under control. Frank then calmly ignored that plan, won the next three, and reminded everyone that in table tennis, “nearly there” is not the same as “finished.”
Division 3
Division 3 gave us an 8–4 win to Leprechaun Laps over Vampire Vows, while Mermaid Tails made a strong start with a 9–3 win over Pixie Dusts. Battle of the Division: Sharon Muller d. Allison Day (9, -9, -10, 4, 8), Sharon took the first, Allison grabbed the next two, and then Sharon fought all the way back to claim the fifth. A proper Round 1 reminder that the hall may be cooler, but the matches are not. Still fighting to the end: Laurie Bradshaw d. Glenda Dutton (-9, 10, 7, -9, 9)
Laurie dropped the first, steadied, got dragged back into a fifth, and then found just enough at the end. It had everything: momentum swings, scoreboard stress, and the unmistakable feeling that both players were trying to make sure everyone got full value from the air conditioning. Congratulations to all players on a lively start to Season 4, especially those who treated Round 1 as the perfect time to test both fitness and cooling capacity.
