The current Eisteddfod season, and the extraordinary way in which volunteers, schools, performance groups, families and supporters have come together, has reinforced for me the immense cultural value of the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) to our region.
As a councillor, I have been struck by the depth of community support for the Eisteddfod and what it means to generations of Mackay residents. The MECC, as the flagship performance venue in our region, enables these events to be presented at the highest possible standard through facilities that rival those found anywhere in Australia.
It has been remarkable to witness the MECC successfully host such a diverse range of Eisteddfod performances, many of which have been sold out and supported by enthusiastic, capacity crowds. The level of participation and audience engagement demonstrates not only the popularity of the event but also the important role the MECC plays in bringing our community together.
As a first-term councillor working through the challenges of budget development, I have gained a greater appreciation of the many competing demands placed upon council. Beyond the essential services of roads, water, sewerage, waste collection, parks and gardens, council is responsible for maintaining a wide range of community facilities and infrastructure that contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by our residents.
While our region is fortunate to have a number of excellent venues capable of hosting community events and gatherings, including BB Print Stadium, the MECC occupies a unique and special place within our community. Its outstanding auditorium and professional facilities continue a proud tradition of performance and entertainment that stretches back through the Theatre Royal and Parish Hall eras.
This year's Eisteddfod season has highlighted for me the vital role the MECC plays in fostering creativity, talent and community participation. It has been a real eye-opener to see the dedication of the volunteers, organisers, adjudicators, performers and venue staff who work together so seamlessly to create an experience that is rewarding for participants and audiences alike.
Beyond the Eisteddfod, I have also enjoyed attending visiting productions and major performances throughout the year. These experiences have reinforced my belief that Mackay has found the right balance between supporting local talent and attracting high-quality touring productions.
The MECC is much more than a building. It is a cultural cornerstone for our region, providing opportunities for people of all ages to perform, learn, participate and connect. The success of this year's Eisteddfod season is a powerful reminder of the value the venue delivers to our community and why its continued support remains so important to the cultural life of Mackay.
