Outrigger Whitsunday

Our club has conducted another successful challenge to welcome new paddlers to the sport.Each Saturday morning for four weeks new paddlers have been taught the basic techniques for outrigger paddling with each session focusing on the traditions, parts of a six person outrigger canoe, water safety, paddle technique and overall fitness.

What a difference a week makes. Last week it was raining and uncomfortable, but this Wednesday just passed provided a 12 knot easterly breeze, flat seas, and a stunning Whitsunday sunset. It couldn’t get any better for the 105 sailors, on 19 yachts, who participated in the Whitsunday Sailing Club’s twilight race.

Cannons Impress At NQ Champs

A total of 23 Cannonvale Cannons travelled to Townsville over the weekend to compete at the NQ Championships. All the swimmers enjoyed being part of relays teams and most of the Cannonvale Cannons’ teams came home with silver and bronze medals.

WTA is set to launch an exciting initiative, Footy for Fun, which is a new program for girls and boys 4 to 8years of age.It starts Monday March 13 at Whitsunday Sports Park from 5 to 5.40 pm.The program runs for 6 weeks and costs$60.

Round 1 of the Premier League got underway on Sunday at the Airlie Bowls Club with four matches taking place, two of which featured two new club members.There were a reversal of fortunes for both debutants however, with Hawkeye Rick suffering a 7/1 defeat at the hands of the more experienced Seumas Rose, who this year was entering into his fourth league season.

MACKAY ARC CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex (ARC) will be closed to the public until further notice. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) was called to the site early this morning after staff noticed a chemical leak in the plant room prior to opening the facility. QFES is currently investigating the site and have advised that the leak has been contained to the plant room. However, the ARC will be closed for the remainder of the day so the issue can be rectified. Council is hopeful that the fa

The marina is exposed to northerly waves during certain weather conditions, making the construction of this new wall a critical step in ensuring the safety of the boats and the harbour.

SPER Clamps Down On Debtors In Mackay

Over the past week, enforcement officers from the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) have been cracking down on people who refuse to pay their SPER debts in Mackay and the surrounding areas. SPER Enforcement Director Kim Easton revealed that around 13,000 individuals and businesses across the Mackay Whitsunday region collectively owed almost $30 million in unpaid fines and penalties.

Miner Airlifted To Hospital After Being Trapped By Coal

A miner was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital after a coal collapse trapped him by the foot at the Carborough Downs Underground Coal Mine last week. The 34-year-old Sarina man was working underground when the incident occurred, causing a significant amount of rubble to fall on him, leaving him trapped.
