It was a quiet week on the green at Wangaratta Bowls Club with only Sunday mixed bowls played. Three rinks of triples ended in Sue Shearing, Dave Kilpatrick, and Pat Tracey claiming the trophy having defeated Deb Beel Penny Warren Graeme Read.

Another great day for our October Monthly Medal with 30 players turning out for the day. While it was a bit windy the temperature was good and the conditions made for some good golf.

The mixed foursomes trophy event was held on Sunday, October 9, with the winning team newcomer Elise Hodgsen and Gerald Lovell.

Airlie Beach ‘Parkwalk’

This week 95 people ran, jogged and walked the 5km waterfront course, of whom 30 were first timers and 7 recorded new Personal Bests. Well done to Steve, Chloe, Jay, Therese, Hoffie, Shane and Geoff. Louise completed her 50th parkrun and Kara completed her 100th week as a volunteer.

While many have commented that the police used excessive force during the event that saw 24-year-old Luke Gilbert fatally shot, others observed that because police officers risk their lives going to work every day, they have the right to defend themselves.

Young Girl Nearly Drowns In Jubilee Pocket

An eight-year-old girl was airlifted to Mackay last Friday following a near-drowning incident at a holiday park in Jubilee Pocket. She was pulled unresponsive from the swimming-pool at 9.30am on Friday, September 30, and the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter, that had just landed in Bowen, was immediately diverted to attend the scene.

Paul Darrouzet, owner of Coral Sea Marina Resort in Airlie Beach gave a passionate speech at last weeks’ Tourism Whitsunday Networking evening which was attended by over 100 tourism operators.

Shute Harbour Set For Construction To “Reach Full Potential”

The “final piece” of the Shute Harbour Marine Terminal puzzle will begin construction this month according to Whitsunday Regional Council’s Shute Harbour Coordinator Shaun Cawood. The new $1.5 million building - to be constructed by local business Red Emperor Constructions at Shute Harbour - will serve as a Small Tourism Operators hub at the site.

Collinsville Fears Flying Fox Roost

Collinsville continues to struggle with a “bat plague” as protected species of flying fox have remained in the mining town for more than seven months, causing concerns the animals may set up a permanent roost. From March the population of ‘fruit bats’ – who have an endemic population of around 200 to 900 in Collinsville – soared in size, reaching major heights in September.

Police Remembrance Day Honours Lives Lost

It was National Police Remembrance Day last week and officers from around the region gathered in Bowen to commemorate emergency service personnel that had lost their lives. This was especially poignant for the Bowen Police community who lost one of their own to cancer less than a year ago.

Remembering Sergeant Ryan Gregory

A special memorial service was held in Bowen last week to honour the life of Sergeant Ryan Gregory who tragically passed away following a short battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer late last year.
