CQU students take Mackay to Urinetown

CQU students take Mackay to Urinetown

Mackay audiences are in for a wickedly funny night out as CQUniversity students from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) stage the award-winning musical Urinetown, a sharp satire that blends comedy, romance and social commentary. Guest directed by actor-director Ylaria Rogers, the musical is set in a drought-stricken town where a water shortage has made private toilets illegal. Instead, citizens must pay a powerful corporation, Urine Good Company, to use public amenities, while anyone who breaks the rules risks being banished to the mysterious and feared 'Urinetown'. The story follows Bobby Strong, a worker at the town's poorest public amenity, who falls for Hope Cladwell, the daughter of the corporation's ruthless CEO. When another fee increase pushes the townspeople to breaking point, Bobby leads a rebellion with unexpected consequences. Winner of three Tony Awards, Urinetown is celebrated worldwide for its witty script, memorable score and playful send-up of musical theatre, drawing inspiration from classics including Les Misérables and West Side Story. "It's a much deeper musical than the continuous laughter would suggest," Ms Rogers said. "It talks about water and money and what it is to live in drought, which in Australia is such a huge thing for us. This show brings generations together, whether you're a theatre-goer or not." Audiences can catch Urinetown at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Ooralea, with matinee and evening performances from 23rd to 25th October. Tickets are on sale now at cqcm.sales.ticketsearch.com, with student, concession and family options available.

Mackay families are invited to enjoy an evening of activities, entertainment and history at the free Light Party at Bluewater Quay on October 31st. Running from 4pm to 9pm, the family-friendly community event offers an alternative to Halloween, with children encouraged to dress as their favourite light-themed or positive characters. This year’s program will include two 30-minute freestyle BMX performances by JC Action Sport, scheduled for 5.30pm and 7.30pm, alongside live entertainment, food trucks and free activities for children. Organisers said the event would combine fun with opportunities for families to learn about historical figures and events associated with the 31st of October. These include William Wilberforce, who was sworn into Parliament on the 31st October and went on to see slavery abolished in 1833, and the Australian Light Horsemen, whose charge at Beersheba during World War I took place on the same date. The program will also explore Martin Luther, who posted his 95 Theses on October 31st, an event associated with the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, and George Müller, who came to faith on the same date and cared for about 10,000 orphans throughout his lifetime. Children can discover these stories through hands-on activities, with fortress building, weaving, horse racing, printing, cookie decorating, light-themed craft creations and fishing among the options on offer. The event aims to bring families together for an evening of entertainment, creativity and learning, with activities designed to engage children of different ages. With free activities and live performances planned throughout the evening, families can drop by Bluewater Quay and take part in the celebrations. The Light Party will run from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 31st October, at Bluewater Quay, Mackay. Entry and children’s activities are free, with food available from food trucks. Appreciate Life’s Little Comforts

September 7, 2023

It’s the small things in life that we take for granted, until they’re lost. Like having access to transport, clothes on our back, the taste of clean drinking water and the one that most recently I realised was a high priority of mine, having a shower in your own home.

Now I’m not going to pretend like this isn’t a good thing, my house is getting a bathroom renovation at the moment. However, it has made me understand the privilege it is to have a shower first thing in the morning to wake me up and showering as part of my night-time wind down ritual.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not much of a camper, my idea of slumming it is either in a caravan or a large tent with at least access to power and a toilet block close by. I’m not one to take off for the weekend on a camp just for the fun of it, but this past week I have been doing ‘camping adjacent’ by showing wherever I can. Between work and my family’s farm, it seems that this will be the next month of my life – who knew that a full bathroom makeover takes this long!!

The unfortunate consequence for the people around me as part of this adjustment I’m having to make is that I, who is always late to everything, am only going to be later to everything (SORRY BOSS). So please, for me, when you jump in the shower this morning/evening in your own bathroom in your own home - soak up how lucky you are for an extra minute.

All jokes aside there are around 122,500 homeless people in our country that don’t have access to safe accommodation let alone a shower, and a huge number in our region alone - estimated to be more than 1,200 - so don’t take for granted the access we have to life’s spoils. That’s escalated substantially since the estimated 700 homeless from the 2016 census. If you or someone you know is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, there are some great organisations in our region to reach out to, such as the Mackay Women’s Centre, Vinnies Homeless Hostel, the Salvo’s, CASA, Chances Café, Orange Sky and of course Mackay's Sleep Bus.

An Eco-Friendly And Community-Driven Second-Hand Clothing Market

September 7, 2023

A new second-hand clothing market is coming to Mackay this month aimed at promoting sustainability, affordability, and community engagement.

Healthy, Clean and Green is pleased to present the first Sweet Repeats, a market event that will have clothes for men, women and children.

By participating in the Sweet Repeats event, stall holders and shoppers will be actively helping the environment and supporting members of the Mackay community.

Selling and purchasing second hand clothing reduces textile waste and minimizes our carbon footprint.

By actively extending the lifecycle of clothing, we can collectively make a significant impact on the fast fashion industry which in turn will have a positive effect on the environment.

Customers can discover unique, stylish pieces that won’t break the bank, allowing them to express their individuality without compromising on their budget and stallholders can turn preloved wardrobe items that they no longer wear into cash, which for some could help to ease financial pressures.

Healthy Clean and Green advocates making better choices for the environment and as such there will be a big focus on making Sweet Repeats a low-waste event.

They are encouraging customers and stallholders to bring along their own water bottles, coffee cups and shopping bags.

MAD Cow Coffee will be in attendance on the day and will noy be providing single use takeaway cups, instead offering a ‘mug library’ that people can utilise if they forget to BYO.

Following an eight-year hiatus, the festival is making a triumphant return to the region and the long-awaited event promises to be a celebration of words, writers, and readers, rekindling the literary flame in the heart of Queensland.

Packed with a diverse range of engaging events, the festival promises to be a hot bed of inspiration, bridging the gap between writers and readers, fostering a sense of camaraderie among literary enthusiasts.

Festival Chair, Karen Jacobsen said she is thrilled to see the festival outline come together so everyone can start getting excited about the event.

"It is such an exciting time for arts in the Whitsundays,” she said.

“All of us involved in bringing the writers festival back in 2024 are overjoyed to be announcing the dates, for an event that will showcase our region.

“We expect it to delight readers and locals and the countdown is on!"

Commencing with an enchanting supper club-styled event entitled "A Love Letter to Queensland”, the Thursday night will set the tone for what’s to come, enthralling and enlivening the audience with spirited tales and heartfelt memories.

Featuring passionate Queenslanders, this event will give attendees a unique opportunity to connect with the soul of Queensland.

Another introduction to the newly revitalised festival itinerary is the inaugural Whitsundays Literary Heart Awards, set to be a highlight of the weekend.

Launching in February 2024, these awards will culminate in a glamorous Festival event on the Saturday evening.

With various categories including poetry, short stories by adults and under 18-year-olds, and published book covers, the awards aim to recognise and celebrate the diverse talents within the literary world.

In honour of the Festival's founder, Gloria Burley, a distinguished award will be presented for the best unpublished manuscript. The Gloria Burley award comes with a prize of $2,000, acknowledging Gloria's remarkable contribution to bringing the Festival to the Whitsundays and commemorating her legacy.

Another highlight of the event is the Kids Day Out on Sunday morning, which aims to instil the love of reading and writing in the young hearts of our community.

Workshops on writing for children and young adults will also be available, nurturing the next generation of talent.

Festival Co-convenor, Richard Evans, says the festival program has been crafted to include a rich tapestry of writing genres.

“From Karaoke Poetry to a Big Book Club High Tea featuring engaging discussions with authors, a local authors' long lunch to thought-provoking panels and workshops – there's something for every literary enthusiast!” he said.

“Let's come together and celebrate the magic of words, the art of writing, and the joy of reading.

Party In The Park Paves The Way For Joyful Connections

August 31, 2023

A petting zoo, free sausage sizzle, four face painters, glitter tattoos and three jumping castles will ensure this year’s Party in the Park will keep young families entertained.

The party will be at Queens Park (oval 1) on Wednesday, September 6, from 9am to 11.30am.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the free morning would showcase the tremendous children’s services and organisations Mackay had to offer for children aged up to six.

“This fantastic event is an initiative of council’s Community Programs team and the Mackay Family Support Alliance that aims to celebrate and raise awareness of Child Protection Week each year,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Dozens of service providers have stalls at the event and they run fun interactive activities and displays,” he said.

“It makes for a really fun morning out and is a great way for young families to network, socialise and find out what support is available to them.

“I’d encourage everyone with young children, including carers and grandparents, to bring them along – grab a free sausage from Mackay Rotary, get their faces painted and have some fun.”

Mackay Family Support Alliance Community Connect Program Worker Christie Pearson said it was important to promote Child Protection Week.

“The theme of Child Protection Week, which runs from September 3 to 9, is ‘protecting children is everybody’s business’,” Ms Pearson said.

“Events like this are an opportunity to promote the value of children and highlight services and networks that support parents through what can be a very stressful time of life,” she said.

“There’s an old saying that raising a child takes a village, and events like this are a great way for new parents to make connections and find networks that become that village.”
