Weaving Conversations Around Reconciliation

Weaving Conversations Around Reconciliation

A sea of colourful threads sprawled across the tables at Mater Private Hospital Mackay last Friday, as hands of all ages carefully looped, twisted and wove raffia together to celebrate and recognise National Reconciliation Week. Laughter and friendly conversation filled the room as community members sat side-by-side learning the traditional art of weaving from First Nations artist Lee George. Held as part of this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In”, the collaborative weaving project invited the community to come together not only to create a shared artwork, but to create connection and understanding. For Artist Lee George, weaving carries a meaning far greater than art alone. “I love the connection that comes with it… it’s sharing stories, teaching people how to weave, and passing on my knowledge to other people,” she said. Around the room, attendees leaned in close to learn new techniques, helping one another through tangled raffia and uneven loops, while conversations unfolded. “I think this kind of project brings everybody together and they’re also learning a new skill,” Lee said. For many, the simple act of weaving offers a moment to slow down. “Weaving slows you down, and is also very grounding, so it keeps you very calm,” she said. Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said council was proud to partner with Mater Private Hospital Mackay to actively engage the community in a hands-on activity. “This year we have engaged First Nations artist Lee George, who uses traditional weaving as a way to tell stories, create connection and build patience and respect,” Mayor Williamson said. “By many people contributing to a woven piece, it’s incredibly symbolic of how we all need to work together towards reconciliation,” he said. “It’s a visual acknowledgement that we each need to step away from the sidelines and actively be involved in change.” Community Development Officer Mulum Stone, who organised the event, said reconciliation begins with people coming together. “It’s about sitting around, engaging with each other and building relationships from a place of trust, respect and openness,” Ms Stone said. “I can’t think of a better way to do this.” General Manager of Mater Private Hospital Mackay Kate Wade said the hospital was proud to help create space for those conversations to happen. “It’s wonderful that we are able to play a key role in starting conversations around First Nations culture and reconciliation.” Mater’s Reconciliation Action Plan Program Manager Jo Jones said this year’s “All In” theme reflected a commitment to walking forward together. “At Mater, being ‘all in’ means walking together with respect, listening with open hearts, and committing to reconciliation through understanding, inclusion and shared action,” Ms Jones said. “We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories as we work together toward a more just and united future.” Community members came together at Mater Private Hospital Mackay to weave, share stories and foster connection during National Reconciliation Week. Whale Season Officially Welcomed In Ahead Of The Australian East Coast Humpbacks’ Return

Whale Season Officially Welcomed In Ahead Of The Australian East Coast Humpbacks’ Return

The Airlie Beach foreshore was abuzz last Saturday, as the traditional owners of the land invited the community to Welcome the Whales back to the region. Traditional Land Owners marked the event with a smoking ceremony and demonstration of traditional dance, with tens of little ones joining in for the final song. Before and after the ceremony community members browsed food trucks, arts, crafts, and stalls from Whitsunday Conservation Council, Ocean Rafting, Whales of the Whitsunday, and more. After the skies turned dark and lit up with the Southern Cross, pointed out by the traditional land owners as an important feature in a Dreaming story, attendees cosied up in camp chairs and picnic blankets for a screening of Free Willy 2. Held during Reconciliation Week, the event shared stories and perspectives from Ngaro speakers & dancers, who performed dances telling the stories of the Wedge-tailed Eagle, Grey Kangaroo, and Rainbow Serpent. As explained by the Whales of The Whitsundays organisation: “The Ngaro, often referred to as the Sea People, have lived in close connection to these islands and oceans for over 9000 years. The Whitsundays were the heart of their life and culture. Using handcrafted three-piece canoes made of ironbark, called winta, they navigated these waters for fishing, gathering, and community journeys. “Their deep understanding of the Marine environment enabled them to sustainably hunt sea creatures, including dugongs, turtles and even small whales, using barbed harpoons that allowed for humane, controlled hunting. “The Dreaming, a spiritual worldview of creation and connection, lives in stories passed down through generations. One such story from Ngaro Elder Aunty Sue, tells of the Rainbow Serpent who moved through the sea, laying her eggs as she went. Those Eggs became the islands you see today, giving us sacred reminders of the past in the present landscape.” The Whitsundays became a designated Whale Heritage Area in March 2024, and is increasingly recognised as an ideal natural environment in which to experience these gentle giants. But, revellers are reminded to respect the creatures, the land and the ocean as they do so. Boats must switch off their engine and not travel within 300 metres of a humpback, and should practice caution when sailing at night. If a whale is accidentally struck, it must be reported, via gbrmpa.gov.au/report-an-incident. The population of whales is being studied by scientists on shore, and at the University of Queensland, specifically the Centre for Marine Science. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take part in the observation and study of the animals by reporting any sightings via the Eye on the Reef App – scan the QR code to download now. MAKE QR PLEASE: https://www2.gbrmpa.gov.au/access/zoning/eye-on-the-reef-app Whales of the Whitsundays are raising funds to support the whales through a raffle. Ghostlight Explores Grief, Art, And Second Chances

June 6, 2025

Next film night June: Ghostlight

Alex Thompson and Kelly O'Sullivan’s moving, gently comic collaboration is about the power of live theater to make sense of our offstage dramas and personal narratives. Ghostlight centers on Dan (Keith Kupferer), a melancholic middle-aged construction worker grieving a family tragedy. Cut off from his devoted wife, Sharon (Tara Mallen), and talented but troubled daughter, Daisy (Katherine Mallen Kupferer), Dan finds comfort and community in a misfit company of amateur actors.

While moonlighting in a low-rent production of Shakespeare’s most protean tragedy, Dan is forced to confront his buried emotions. Real-life family Mallen, Kupferer, and Mallen Kupferer bring tenderness and authenticity to this poignant portrait, while Dolly de Leon – last seen stealing the scene in Triangle of Sadness – is hilarious as Dan’s irascible, improbable co-star.

After premiering at Sundance this year, Ghostlight has impressed audiences and critics alike with its touching and gently comic tale of the healing power of art. With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and a high placing on Letterboxd's Top 10 films of the year, this is one you don't want to miss!

Reviews:

"One of the year’s best, most satisfying stories" - DIRECTOR'S CLUB

"An emotional, gorgeously told story" - SCREEN RANT

"A stunning fable about the healing power of art" - THE SPOKESMAN

The Listener:  “A heartwarming movie about the benefits of more drama in your life”

Finalists Announced For Prestigious Artists’ Book Awards

June 6, 2025

There’s so much happening in Mackay in July, but for the art-lover there is nothing better than Artspace Mackay’s Libris Awards.

Artspace Mackay, in partnership with Daly Bay, is delighted to announce the finalists for the 2025 Libris Awards: Australian Artists Book Prize.

The shortlisted entrants’ artworks will be exhibited at Artspace from July 5 to September 14.

The prestigious Libris Awards bring together works by leading and emerging artist book makers from across the country.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the awards were a chance to celebrate the artform and build on the gallery’s significant artist book collection through the competition’s acquisitive prizes.

“We have had a fantastic and diverse range of artists’ books submitted, which is proof that artists’ book genre is thriving,” Mayor Williams said.

“Entries have explored myriad themes, including the ongoing impacts of climate change, identity and belonging, the search for connection and intimacy and social and political issues,” he said.

“I extend a huge thanks to guest judges, Ana Estrada and Marian Macken, who have had a very difficult task of shortlisting 53 entries for display and award consideration from the 142 submitted entries.”

Artspace Director Tracey Heathwood said the 2025 awards had been reimagined, with the Tertiary Artists’ Book Prize category now an invitational award.

“Seven tertiary student finalists were commissioned to create new artists’ books for the exhibition and to vie for the overall $3000 acquisitive Tertiary Artists’ Book Prize,” Ms Heathwood said.

“With support from major sponsor Daly Bay, prize money has increased across all categories and, thanks to our wonderful partnership with the Queensland College of Art and Design’s Cobalt Editions, we will also host the 2025 abbe Conference and Artists Book Fair,” she said.

“The Artists Book Fair is an opportunity for artists, designers and makers to showcase their artists’ book and printmaking practice to gallery professionals, academics, artist peers and collectors.”

A full list of the finalists is available here https://bit.ly/4k3XxB0.

BOB’S YOUR AUNTIE – A SNEAK PEEK

June 5, 2025

If the essence of farce is chaos, Kucom Theatre’s production of Bob’s Your Auntie is right on the button.

The story is simple enough: Robert Marshall has returned from his Aunt Roberta’s funeral only to find the taxman at his door for unpaid taxes. At the same time a call comes in from the Lottery commission to say Auntie has just won a considerable amount on one of her tickets, of which there are dozens.

What ensues is a melee of total confusion when Robert, his girlfriend Juliet, and his friends Dinsdale and Basil, think of how one of them can impersonate Auntie when the man with the cheque turns up to present it. But to be successful he must dodge the taxman, the lottery official, the police, a jealous boyfriend and the news media, as well as an overly helpful vicar.

Well, we’ve all been there, haven’t we?

Gordon Lowe has already demonstrated his comedic abilities to Kucom audiences in The Foreigner, Big Bad Mouse, and Death of a Gerbil, but he’s facing some stiff competition here. Anzjuli Venter, who plays girlfriend Juliet, has a wonderfully deadpan delivery that contrasts well with the exuberantly camp Dinsdale (played by Michael Brennan) and his cheeky boyfriend Basil (Anthony Heron, in his first onstage role).

Other Kucom newcomers include Greccia Ipenza as ITV journalist Pamela; Kai Hulme-Moir as the aptly-named Harold Swindle from the tax office; and Ross MacDonald as the bemused Constable Maxwell.

Advice to the audience: Don’t try to follow the plot too closely, just sit back and enjoy the mayhem.

Bob’s Your Auntie opens at Kucom Theatre next week. Season dates 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 June (please note, there is no Sunday matinee). Bookings: https://events.humanitix.com/bob-s-your-auntie.

Between The Tides

June 5, 2025

Where Sea Meets Song

Mackay locals and visitors are being urged not to miss their chance to experience one of Queensland’s most breathtaking and sustainable music events, Between the Tides, next Friday night, June 13, at Cape Hillsborough National Park. With Saturday’s show already sold out, Friday’s performance is now the only opportunity left to witness this once-in-a-lifetime, award-winning event as part of the Queensland Music Trails – The Reef.

Presented by QMF, Between the Tides brings together world-class music, First Nations cultural celebration, and regenerative tourism in a truly unforgettable natural setting. The stage is built — and then rebuilt — between the ebb and flow of the tide, delivering a raw and awe-inspiring musical experience where the sea meets the sand.

Headlining this year’s Friday night performance is none other than Australian music icon Xavier Rudd, who is making his first-ever appearance at the unique coastal concert.

Rudd, known for his soulful music and heartfelt storytelling, said he is “just excited to come and spend time and be part of it... it sounds like a really cool concept.”

After two decades based on the Sunshine Coast and playing to audiences across Europe and North America, the globally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist still finds magic in moments like this.

“I still have to pinch myself that I have the opportunities that I have,” he said.

Rudd’s show at Cape Hillsborough promises to be a stripped-back, deeply moving performance.

“I’ll be bringing roots music... an acoustic show, but a bit more stripped back,” he said, perfectly suited to the elemental beauty of the Cape Hillsborough coastline.

Organisers are encouraging music lovers to seize this final chance to experience Between the Tides before it vanishes with the tide.

“Throughout The Reef Trail and specifically at Between the Tides, we’re demonstrating that
tourism is so much more than sightseeing,” said Daryl Raven, CEO of QMF.

“It educates, inspires, empowers and leaves a legacy of sustainability for the natural environment, people and culture, and the destination’s economy.”

Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said The Reef Trail is an incredible
example of what Queensland has to offer in sustainable, eco-tourism experiences.

“The Reef Trail is a great example of fusing unique musical performances with Queensland’s
natural landscape to create a must-attend event for visitors from around the country.

Between the Tides is delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government, the Yuwi Peoples, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, NRMA Parks and Resorts, Mackay Regional Council, and Mackay Isaac Tourism.

With only Friday night tickets remaining, now is the time to secure your place at one of Queensland’s most extraordinary music experiences.

Let the tide carry you to Cape Hillsborough next Friday — where the reef, rhythm and resilience come to life beneath the stars.

Visit qldmusictrails.com to book your tickets now.

Don’t miss your last chance to experience Between the Tides this Friday - a magical night of music where the sea becomes the stage at Cape Hillsborough. Photos supplied

Grease Meets Rocky Horror In Electrifying Airlie Debut

June 5, 2025

For the first time in front of a public audience, the Grease vs Rocky Horror Ultimate Musical Mashup will be performing at the Airlie Beach Hotel.

Expect well-known hits, audience participation at every turn, and a whole heap of fun!

The show's co-creator Anita Spring has been a regular performer at the Airlie Beach Hotel for the last six years, but this time she is thrilled to perform a brand-new show. The Grease vs Rocky Horror has only had one private function performance before and this show at Airlie Beach Hotel will blow the roof off.

Be taken on a journey from Rydell High to the Frankenstein Place as this show lets Sandy, Danny, Rizzo, and the Pink Ladies face off against Dr Frank-N-Furter, Magenta, Columbia, and all the wonderfully weird residents of Transylvania.

It's a nostalgic journey through iconic hits. You'll know the songs by heart, Summer Nights, Grease Lightnin’, You’re The One That I Want, and the performers will have you hand jiving like it's 1959! Then just when you think it's safe to put your comb down, it's time to put those hands on your hips for the Time Warp, The Sweet Transvestite and a Science Fiction double feature to bring the house down.

This isn't just a Grease versus Rocky Horror tribute, it's a love letter to two films that changed everything and Anita is encouraging everyone to come along to the show dressed up and ready to dance.

“Come dressed as your favourite character, whether you're channelling Frenchie, Kenickie or the time-travelling riffraff,” Anita said.

“We'll be giving away prizes for the best costumes and encouraging audience participation at every turn.

“There will be pelvic thrusts, finger snaps, and maybe even a sing off or two!”

If you grew up with Grease and snuck into your first midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in your teens, this night will feel like coming home. And if you are new to the madness, you're in for the most fabulous musical baptism ever.

Expect a room full of smiles, songs and standing ovations as the Grease vs Rocky Horror Ultimate Musical Mashup is only performing on Saturday. Be there, you don’t want to miss it.

The show's co-creator Anita is also performing her own Olivia Newton-John tribute ‘Forever Olivia’ on Sunday. This tribute is especially special to Anita as she has performed it for many years and idolises Olivia as an artist.

The Sunday show features a full set of beloved hits spanning Olivia’s career. Expect classics like Let Me Be There, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), Have You Never Been Mellow, Magic, Xanadu, and Suddenly. Fans will also enjoy upbeat favourites from her Totally Hot album including A Little More Love, and the rare gem Twist of Fate from Two of a Kind.

A few Grease numbers will also be sprinkled in to honour her breakout film role. With a world-class band and a passion-filled performance, this is a must-see for Olivia fans and music lovers.
