With Mackay Road Runners With temperatures feeling closer to 35 degrees and no rain in sight, it was a very Mackay-style lead-up to Christmas at this week’s Bluewater Quay Social Run. Forget a white Christmas, runners were treated to hot, testing conditions during the afternoon’s 5km and 10km events. Race Director Andrew Short was thanked for delivering another successful run, despite the heat, with welcome relief provided by Zooper Doopers and Red Dog’s rehydration options, which were greatly appreciated by participants. The next Bluewater Quay social run, commencing at 4.30pm next Sunday, will be the final event before Christmas. Runners are encouraged to come along for a festive group photo and stay on for a Christmas drink afterwards. Some of the best photos may feature in this Mackay Life Newspaper and the Mackay Road Runners 2026 calendar, described humorously as a firefighter-style calendar, but with clothes. Congratulations were extended to all participants for their efforts in challenging conditions, with a reminder for runners to continue training and racing in such conditions to stay healthy and safe. “Thank you to Mackay & Whitsunday Life magazine for their awesome support of the Mackay Road Runners Club!”

What a wonderful weekend we had celebrating 50 years at our Two Day Annual on the 22nd and 23rd July.
Record numbers of 69 shooters travelled from Burdekin, Charters Towers, Gympie, Mersey, and Spring Bay – Tasmania, Mackay and Sarina, Tamworth, and Silkwood to compete over the weekend.
We started our weekend off with a social Friday night BBQ followed by a big breakfast Saturday morning prepared by Geoff, Andrew, Kerry, and Jeannie to get everyone ready for a big day of competition.
After the completion of Day One everyone settled in for a friendly get together.
The ladies in the kitchen did not disappoint with the amazing dinner they prepared for Saturday night, and everyone had a wonderful time being entertained by Geoff and his music.
President Bill Gall read out the Minutes from the first meeting ever held on the 13th November, 1973 and Greg Maltby gave an informative speech regarding the history of the club.
Alan Maltby one of the founding members of the club attended the Presentation on Sunday to present the Maltby Family Memorial trophy to the winners.
On Sunday we started all over again beginning with a hearty breakfast.
The wind had picked up making for some challenging competition during the day.
Lui Populin made a presentation to Lachlan Furini for the Encouragement Award and Jackson Zarb was presented with a small gift of appreciation for all his hard work over the weekend helping out with the traps etc.
All overall and first place winners were presented with an engraved Yeti celebrating our 50 Year Anniversary.
Bill and Kerry Gall, Colin and Cheryl Edgerton were both honoured and surprised to be presented with a beautifully engraved Yeti water bottle by the members of the club for all their hard and tireless work that they have dedicated to the club over the years.
The weekend was a huge success and what a way to celebrate our fifty years, it was great to see everyone pitching in and helping out from the Office, Canteen, Kitchen as well as the traps, clubhouse etc, too many to name individually but your support is very much appreciated.
We would like to thank our Sponsors Whitsunday Regional Council, Abbot Point Operations, Greg Maltby, Lui Populin, Pilcher Industries, Corrsafe, Diamond Protective Coating, Michael and Susie Populin and Grant Cox for your support.
Our next day of competition will be held on Sunday 27 August.

North Queensland Cowboys have claimed one of the biggest scalps for their first ever win in the NRLW competition.
The new franchise showed its stout-hearted qualities with a spirited 31-20 victory over reigning premiers Newcastle last Sunday at Belmore Sports Ground.
Trailing 20-12, the Cowboys staged a remarkable comeback with four second half tries to bury the star-studded Knights.
Earlier, 18-year-old NSW half back Jesse Southwell engineered tries for Sheridan Gallagher and Shanice Parker as Newcastle jumped to a 10-0 lead after eight minutes.
The Mackay Cutters connection of hooker Emma Manzelmann and centre Jasmine Peters combined for the Cowboys opening try before winger Jetaya Faifua crossed to level the scores.
Jillaroos utility Kirra Dibb produced a standout performance to inspire the North Queensland team.
The crafty playmaker booted a penalty goal to give the Cowboys a 12-10 lead at the interval; potted a field goal to snap a 20-all deadlock midway through the second half and created two of North Queensland’s final three tries.
When Cowboys forward April Ngatunpuna was sin-binned for a shoulder charge the Newcastle side took full advantage with Gallagher and prop Rima Butler crashing over for tries to open up an eight-point lead.
But in a dramatic twist the North Queensland women took control by scoring an incredible four tries in the final 14 minutes – including a double to winger Vitalina Naikore – to record an amazing win.

An international sporting trip to exotic Dubai is the just reward for top class performances by emerging 15-year-old Mackay cricketer Kiana Dunn.
The versatile St Patrick’s College student will represent the Australian Under 16 Girls Indoor Cricket team at this year’s World Series Under 18s tournament in the United Arab Emirates at the end of September.
Kiana, a talented opening batter and sharp pace bowler, earned selection after helping Queensland Under 18s clinch back-to-back National Indoor Cricket titles these past two seasons.
The promising all-rounder was the Maroons youngest player at age 14 when they defeated NSW at the 2022 National Championships in Melbourne and was later named in the Queensland All Stars team.
Dunn again showed her wares in Queensland’s triumphant 2023 side that also lifted the trophy with an impressive Grand Final victory over Western Australia in Ipswich.
A prolific run-scorer, wicket-taker and superb fielder, young Kiana is the perfect package for indoor cricket.
She has also represented Queensland at Under 22s level and is delighted to be part of the Australian Girls squad for the World Series championship.
“I’m excited to be visiting the city of Dubai that has hosted numerous International Cricket Council (ICC) events over the years,” beamed Kiana, who took up cricket at the age of eleven.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to represent my country against the best indoor cricket girls players from across the world,” she said.
Kiana has competed at Mackay Indoor Sports for the past five years and during that time has demonstrated her all round capabilities in park cricket with the Norths Cricket Club in the Mackay Cricket Association’s boys competition.
She has been a regular fixture in the Mackay-Whitsunday junior representative cricket teams and helped St Patrick’s College win the prestigious Queensland StreetSmarts Twenty20 Secondary Schools Challenge.
Kiana has impressed State outdoor cricket selectors who named her as part of the 20 player Queensland Under 16 junior provisional squad.
Her father Shane Dunn, a prominent all-rounder with Norths Cricket Club, has proved a major influence.
“My dad has always encouraged me to have fun at sport and gives valuable tips for my batting and bowling,” revealed Kiana.
When she’s not smashing runs or taking wickets on the cricket field, the capable Year 9 student can be found racking up goals on the netball court.

Mackay’s Kiana Dunn will represent the Australian Girls Indoor Cricket team at this year’s World Series Under 18s tournament in Dubai during September

Fourteen days can be a long time between drinks in the Queensland Rugby League Hostplus Cup.
Exactly a fortnight after nearly toppling premiership leaders Souths Logan Magpies in Proserpine, the Mackay Cutters came back to earth with a thud after a devastating 46-6 loss to Townsville Blackhawks at Jack Manski Oval.
Having played so bravely in a 14-12 defeat against the top ranked Magpies, the unpredictable Cutters were poised for a strong showing against the ninth placed Blackhawks on their away trip.
Things looked promising when livewire fullback Rayden Burns crossed for the opening try after 21 minutes with half back Brandon Finnegan adding the extras to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.
But things went pear-shaped from that moment.
A converted try by replacement half Jake Bourke levelled the scores before wingers Jodeci Baker-Tiraha and Robert Derby scooted over for four pointers to give the Blackhawks a 16-6 lead at the interval.
The try blitz continued in the second stanza with Baker-Tiraha and centre Zac Laybutt posting doubles and back rower Taniela Sadrugu crossing as Townsville notched up thirty unanswered points.
It was a disappointing display from the Cutters who had turned in encouraging performances in recent weeks to kick-start their campaign.
MEANWHILE the Cutters had no answer to a slick Blackhawks Under 21 outfit during a 48-0 whitewash in the Hastings Deering Colts competition.
Outstanding fullback prospect Ragarive Wavik was superb for Townsville – capping a best on ground display with a points haul of 20 from two tries and six goals.
The Blackhawks captain was electrifying in attack as the home side ran in nine tries with doubles from winger Jesse Yallop and boom second rower Jamal Shibasaki, hooker Jai Hansen, prop Tyrone Gunn-James and centre Elekana Suavai.
Mackay have a bye in the Hostplus Cup this weekend before squaring off with the Burleigh Bears on Saturday August 12 at UAA Park on the Gold Coast at 4pm.

Approximately forty Mackay Road Runners revelled in the early morning cool, sunny conditions as they left the Eimeo Pacific Hotel carpark precincts for a very hilly, meandering track towards Eimeo via Dolphin Heads and Blacks Beach.
Luke Leven ran a magnificent 14km being the highest handicapped runner to start, with next highest handicapped runner, Toby Rule leading him by one minute from the starter’s gun.
Luke’s impressive outing earned him 3rd overall as he smashed his way over the rolling hills and through gusty breezes to finish behind talented runners first and second placed Oliver Rule and Andrew Wallace.
The handicapped five kilometre start saw Michael Feenaghty’s golden run secure him first place ahead of talented rivals Lily Leven and Werner VanDerLinde.
There were some awesome efforts across both events with Carolyn Mapes being first female in the 14km on handicap, Toby Rule’s tough 14km effort after an amazing out of town 6km cross country race the previous day to take silver and a well-deserved spot in the Queensland Team to race a 6km cross country championships event in Canberra next month.
Congratulations to athletes competing in several very popular out of town events including Yeppoon and Airlie Beach.
This Sunday’s Mackay Mountain Marathon event scheduled to commence at the Eungella Chalet has been cancelled due to the closure of some of the Eungella National Parks’ weather damaged and therefore unsafe trails, however, there will be a revised course and start location for those wanting to do a very social run.

The Whitsunday Sportspark played host to the MRU Semi- finals on Saturday which saw Kuttabul take on Cities followed by Whitsunday Raiders taking on Moranbah bulls.
The clash between the Raiders and the Bulls was to determine who went straight through to the grand final on the 12th.
The Raiders had an unusual training week due to the rain but were quietly confident they could come away with the win.
The game was going to be an arm wrestle for both sides and only a minute into it the bulls came up with a penalty to put first points on the board.
The Raiders could not seem to get their hands on the ball for most of the game but when they did, they looked good throwing it around, the scrums were strong and both sides found it hard to push over the ball.
With the wind behind them Moranbah took a further lead with a converted a try after 15 minutes.
It wasn’t until around the 30 minute mark that the men in green scored their own converted try to make it 7-10.
The score was to remain that way until around the 60 minute mark when the Bulls converted another penalty to take it to 7-13, not long after Niall Clancy converted a Raiders penalty to make it 10 -13.
The Raiders had momentum close to the Bulls line, with 5 mins to go, when the game was halted due to a major injury.
The crowd were on the edge of their seats after the restart, when speedster Rhys Ward chased a grubber kick over the line, unfortunately it was judged to have gone out and the Raiders would have to take on the Kuttabul Camelboks at home next Saturday to move into the Grand Final, going down 10-16.

Whitsunday Sea Eagles travelled to Mackay Magpies on Saturday with Senior teams having a great day on field.
The sun was shining but it was definitely wet weather footy with the Magpies ground waterlogged from the week of rain.
Sea Eagles Senior Men handled the slippery conditions better, to take home the win 46 – 25 and secure 3rd position on the ladder above Magpies, behind a tight tussle at the top between Saints and Swans.
Sea Eagles backline was superb with Nathan Packer, Ryan Lee, and Eden Wishart having plenty of the ball.
Reliable targets up forward Angus Blackwood and Brayden Wall gave Sea Eagles scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Despite the sloppy conditions Sea Eagles Senor Women flew in the first term keeping the opposition scoreless.
The second quarter saw Magpies make a strong resurgence and Sea Eagles worked hard to hold their advantage.
Sea Eagles were able to endure the attacks and finish with a strong win 45 – 25.
Lana Rademeyer put in a solid effort for the day pegging two goals whilst Cleo Dickie showed strong form through the midfield.
Cara Behnke also presented in the forward line to chalk up two great goals.
Sea Eagles Under 14s took it to a strong Magpies team in the performance of the year with every player contributing, however could not overcome the bigger Magpies outfit losing 6 - 21.
Sea Eagles Under 12s found themselves back on a wet deck for the first time in a while taking on the Magpies for the second week in a row.
After a cracking win against them last week, Sea Eagles could not keep Magpies from scoring in the final term and went down 15 – 17 in a muddy thriller.
This Saturday August 5 sees all Sea Eagles teams head for Bakers Creek with games starting from 9:15am.

The biggest professional triathlon field in the event’s history competed in the 2023 Coral Sea Marina Airlie Beach Triathlon festival last weekend with Kurt McDonald and Radka Kahlefeldt winning the men’s and women’s races.
Whitsunday Triathlon Club President Michael Kimpton said over 250 triathletes competed in the senior and juniors events over the two day festival which received rave reviews from the visiting professionals who all indicated they were keen to return in 2024 as the race weekend continues to grow.
The 24-year-old Victorian, McDonald led from start to finish to defeat a top-class male field in a time of 1 hour, 51 minutes, 36 seconds for the 1.5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run Olympic Distance event.
2XU champion Jarrod Osborne made up almost two minutes on the winner in the run leg to finish second in 1.52.56 while veteran professionals Tim Van Berkel and defending champion Caleb Noble tied for third place in 1.55.51.
Kahlefeldt blew away the female field with stunning swim and ride legs to open a big lead and cruised to victory in 2.02.58 ahead of Cairns Ironman 3rd place finisher Penny Slater in 2.06.38 and Chloe Hartnett 2.07.03.

“We had support from over 50 local businesses which has allowed the club provide amazing prizes for all events and we had amazing feedback on the quality of our race packs from all competitors.
“The aim of our small but dynamic Whitsunday Triathlon Club committee headed by Mark McConkey, Karen Maddock, Val Kimpton, Robyn Corrigan and Debra Childs is to continue to grow and expand the event to make it a highlight of the Queensland triathlon calendar.”

We had our last club trophy contested on Sunday morning at the Airlie Beach Bowls Club, with The Players Club Captain the prize on offer for the players.
Round 1 results were for Premier League points, with the victors advancing to the knock out stages.
There were wins for Kam Reason, Art McMinn, Jamie Maher defeated Dom Friend in a sudden death play-off leg.
Gary Robbie got a bye as the defending champion Jamie Woods couldn’t defend his title on the day unfortunately, and Joe Wilson defeated Andy Peel.
Dom Friend got a second bite of the cherry as the best loser from round 1, he played Gary Robbie in a playoff match to see which players would advance back into the competition.
Dom won that to face Jamie Maher yet again. It was another tight one, but this time Dom had a little too much for Jamie taking his place in the final winning 4-3.
Kam Reason defeated Art McMinn on the other side of the draw 4/3 to set up a match against Joe Wilson in the other semi final. Joe narrowly won that 4-3 to face Dom in this year’s Players final.
Joe played some great darts all day, as did Dom, but great scoring power along with clinical doubling saw Joe lift his first trophy at the club to put a new name on the trophy.
Congratulations Joe on a well-deserved win.
Thank you to our sponsors Mika Airlie Whitsunday Tattooing Airlie Beach and Master Butchers Whitsunday & MBW On the Barbie.
Contributed with thanks to Jamie Maher.
