This week’s Airlie Beach Darts Premier League action began with a round three catch up match between Gary Robbie and Dom Friend.

Dom came flying out of the blocks, hitting a 180 and a few 140s in his 7/4 victory over Gary. Dom didn’t have it all his own way, though, as Gary lead the contest 3/1 during the early stages, showing positive signs for his season.

Both Gary and Dom featured again later in the day: Dom was held 6/6 with Andy Peel, whereas Gary’s day got worse, suffering a heavy 7/0 loss to Joe Wilson, who currently sits a point behind the league leader.

The round was closed out with an entertaining 6/6 draw between Arthur McMinn and Jamie Maher.

Arthur showed a lot of fight in that match, trailing 6/3 win before winning three legs on the trot to earn a valuable point.

Finally, Jamie Woods had a comfortable 7/1 win over Hawkeye Rick to go joint second on the table, equal with Joe and a point behind league leader Dom Friend.

A strong south easterly wind, with gusts in excess of 25 knots, was the order of the day for the Whitsunday Sailing Club twilight race on Wednesday.  

A number of boats in the 13-boat fleet chose to reef their sails to ensure a more comfortable race, while not sacrificing speed.  

Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) again made a perfectly timed start to take out the Doyle Sails sponsored best start prize, maintaining good performance against the faster boats for much of the race.  

Bobby’s Girl (Mark Beale) led the fleet around the first rounding mark, with QMS Ponyo (John Galloway) close behind.  

Smooth Criminal (Leo Rodriguez) struggled in the strong conditions and fell away from the leaders, having a great battle against Treasure VIII, while the heavier boats, Wide Load (Shannan Hart) and Twister (Kevin Fogarty) performed best in the strong wind.

On corrected time, Twister took the honours over Wide Load and Treasure VIII.

Wobbly Boot (Craig Piccinelli) was too keen to get a good start, resulting in a recall and having to restart in the next race.

This allowed Shiraz (John Cable) to lead the fleet away, with Matchless (Terrence Stevens) close behind.

After a slow start, Wobbly Boot soon joined the action at the front of the fleet, making it a 3 way battle, with the lead constantly changing.  

On the last leg of the course Wobbly Boot made a decisive move, hitting the front at the crucial time to take line honours from Matchless and Shiraz.  

Further back, both Rossgo (Greg Hammon) and Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic) missed the start, sailing in close formation to finish 4th and 5th, while Lama (Louie Tuck) followed them home.  

On corrected time, Shiraz took the honours over Rossgo and Masquerade.

The Cannonvale Cannons hosted another successful Wednesday Club Night last week before leading into Saturday’s Club Championships.

Five Cannons also chased National qualifying times by participating in a time trial in Proserpine, with all making the cut: Jy Parkinson, Jacob Bell, Holly Perrin, Ehsan Helou, and Anisa Helou.

The five Cannons will travel to the Australian Age Swimming Championships held during the April school holidays on the Gold Coast.  

At the Wednesday night Club Night, Jy Parkinson and Jacob Bell were presented with special Queensland Development squad caps.  

Three Cannons set new pool records at the Collinsville/Scottsville Amateur Swimming Carnival in weeks prior: Eloise Chegwidden, Jax Clayworth, and Isabella Pisaniello; and Jax Clayworth also set a new Cannonvale Club record last week for 50-metre Butterfly.  

The Cannons commended Matilda Nicholes on taking out this week’s Swim Star Award, while this week’s Chocolate Awards were presented to Holly Perrin, Tora Delac, and Thomas Ganter for the best personal bests.

Upgrade Certificates were awarded to Thomas Ganter, Zane Clayworth, Lucas Korosec, Bianca Anderson and Zach Trefz.  

Highlights from Club Night include: Top performers of the night based on personal bests were Alessa Penglase-Fortunato, Isabella Pisaniello, Indi Smith, Zach Trefz, Declan Dichiera, Evie Doherty, Bianca Anderson, Harry Crisp, Charlie Doherty, and Jack Ganter.

Harry Crisp, aged eight, swam a super 50-metre Freestyle in 56.34 seconds, a 3.59 second best.

Harris Delac, aged nine, swam an excellent 100-metre IM in 1.55.31 – a 3.84 second personal best. While brothers Zane and Jax Clayworth both swam fantastic times in their respective Butterfly events.  

Congratulations to all the other swimmers who swam personal bests: Don Algie, Tora Delac, Miller Eaves, Thomas Ganter, Millie Groom, Ty Hayes-Williams, Gracie Laguna, Connor Lee, Stevie Lee, and Millah Walker.

The Whitsunday Sailing Club’s weekly twilight races were hosted in perfect sailing conditions on Wednesday, with 16 yachts on the water.

While the easterly breeze was ideal, it abated during the afternoon, dropping to just four knots by the time the last boats finished.

A close start put Wide Load (Shannan Hart) just ahead of QMS Ponyo (John Galloway) to take the Doyle Sails sponsored best start prize, but that was the only time that these two boats headed the fleet.

At the first rounding mark, a race long battle commenced between Smooth Criminal (Leo Rodriguez / Iyas Shaheen) and Bobby’s Girl (Mark Beale).  

There was little to separate these two boats, with the lead swapping a number of times.

It was a lonely race for Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) in fourth place, while Twister (Kevin Fogarty) and Wide Load had another close battle further back.

While just 12 seconds separated the first two boats, it was Smooth Criminal who took the line honours and handicap prizes, with Bobby’s Girl and QMS Ponyo taking the minor placings.

Division Three saw Rossgo (Greg Hammon) lead the fleet away, but it was Matchless (Terrence Stevens who led the fleet at the first mark.

In the light conditions Aquatarius (Tom Parker) was in second place, despite the heavy boat usually struggling in those conditions.  

A quiet day saw Wobbly Boot (Craig Piccinelli) behind Rossgo, while Shiraz (John Cable), Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic), Lighthorse (Di Forster), and Norbert G (Ghigo Casalini) followed further back.  

On corrected time, the honours went to Matchless, with Rossgo second and Aquatarius third.

Races continue every Wednesday from 4.30pm, with limited crewing positions available. Those wishing to participate as crew need to be at the club by 2.30 pm.

Smooth Criminal leading Bobby’s girl in the Whitsunday Sailing Club Twilight Race

Onlookers may have been confused while watching Whitsunday Outriggers Canoe Club participate in ‘Huli’ practice two weeks ago in the Whitsunday waters.

The local club embarked from Shingley Beach to New Beach, and whilst in the Pioneer Bay, tipped themselves out of their vessels.

Outrigger Club member Paul Tobias said a Huli is essentially when an outrigger capsizes, caused when the outer float leaves the water, rotating 180-degrees.

“This is a rare occurrence, as the ama [outer float] provides canoe stability, but when a Huli happens, all paddlers find themselves in the water,” Mr Tobias said.

“A couple of times a year, the routine for recovery needs to be practiced and last Saturday morning for Whitsunday Outriggers, it was Huli time.”

After a safety briefing at Shingley Beach from club president Terry Kemp and coach Glen Bray, the Huli crew across to New Beach to Huli.

Safety and teamwork were essential, with each member, depending on their seat in the canoe, allocated a task -- from collecting the paddles, to righting the canoe and bailing out the water.

Four, six person ocean canoe crafts (OC6) went over during the Huli, leaving the outriggers drenched, but with good water safety and team work, four relatively speedy recoveries.

Mr Tobias said his own previous practice took place a month ago in surf off the Victorian beach of Torquay, “where the water temperature is quite different to the beautiful Whitsundays.”

“Well done to all 22 paddlers on Saturday,” he said.

And last Wednesday, senior representatives from Tassal visited Shingley Beach to view the latest addition to the outrigger fleet – a direct outcome of their sponsorship.

The recently launched six person Matahina ocean canoe is already a vital part of the OC6 training and racing canoes for Outrigger Whitsunday.

“Thanks to Heidi Smith, Senior Manager, Environmental, Social and Governance at Tassal, and Kylie Davies, Senior Manager Projects and Growth, for your company’s ongoing support,” Mr Tobias said.

The Whitsunday Moto Sports Club held a successful Round 2 of its Club Championships on Saturday, March 18.

Great numbers competed in both the club’s Cadet and Senior classes – with brand new karters Luke and Cruz racing for the first time this meeting.  

The club’s next race day will be Saturday, May 20, where they will be hosting the North Queensland Series.

It was a massive day of darts coming up this weekend for the Airlie Beach Darts Club with the season’s first trophy up for grabs.

Round One had valuable Premier League points up for grabs, and the winners advanced to the knockout stages of the Celtic Cup competition.

The defending champion was Jamie Woods, who started off with a comfortable 7/1 win over Jamie Maher. Joe Wilson hit a 180 in his 7/0 win over Hawkeye Rick, and Jayden Lloyd recorded a 7/2 win over Andy Peel.

The last two matches of the round were a little closer than the others, with Gary Robbie beating Jayden Lloyd 7/5 in a Round Two catch up match, and Kameron Reason and Seumas Rose played out a six-all draw.

A Proserpine bowls player has won gold for his part in Australia’s recent overall win at the International Blind Bowlers Association Championships in Tweed Heads last week.

Scott Kinnear, a visually impaired Proserpine local, represented the country in both the Singles and the Pairs B4 Classification for the March 6 to 16 competition – and brought home a Gold Medal to the Whitsundays this week for his efforts.

Alongside younger brother Shane, who acts as Mr Kinnear’s director in the competition, assisting him in matters of distance and position of the bowls, Mr Kinnear played five rounds of the singles competition and ten in pairs, winning against England, Israel, New Zealand, and South Africa in singles.

Mr Kinnear’s selection as part of the Australian squad came after talent scouts saw his previous two years of performances in the Blind Section of the Disability Games, which led him to an invitation late last year to attend a training camp and selection trial.

“I started playing Bowls at the age of 11,” Mr Kinnear said.

“I kept playing as a kid all the way until 2004 when the degenerative issue in my eyes saw me lose sight in the left. Bowls have been a constant in my life."

Proserpine Bowls Club secretary Heather Brown said she and fellow members of the club – at which Mr Kinnear plays regularly - weren’t surprised by the excellent result.

“Scott is a serious talent,” Ms Brown said.

“His ability to cope with a variety of green speeds and weather conditions is what set him apart; it was no surprise to us that he would earn a spot in the team and the hearts of so many of the spectators.”

Ms Brown said she was most impressed by the level of teamwork between Mr Kinnear, his brother, and his pairs partner Sharon Dunk and her director.

“The level of sportsmanship was incredible to watch,” she said.

“I was particularly impressed by the trust that they placed in each other; it was something that they had in every single game.”

In the pairs, Mr Kinnear and Sharon put in stellar performances and were the standouts, beating teams from England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Hong Kong – they won with a clear +69.

Mr Kinnear said he never imagined he would win, but when it came down to the last end against New Zealand in the Singles finals, he finally began believing.

“That was the best game against New Zealand in the finals,” he said.

“Every game is tough, depending on who you’re facing up against. And the difficulty adds to the happiness – which when I won the Gold was huge.”

Mr Kinnear will be sure to show off his Gold Medal to his fellow Proserpine bowlers at the local club for years to come.

This week’s 9-hole stableford was won by Rhys Bartholomew on 24 points, second place went to Chris Bartlett with 19 on a countback, and third Jeff Tovey, also 19.

Our Friday 9-hole stableford competition was a great turn out, with the winner, on 24 points, James Millar, followed in second place with 21 points by Tyson Flavel, and third with 20, Kev Francke.

On Sunday, we had our 18-hole Four-ball better ball competition; on 43.5 points coming in with the win were Glenn Scott and Wayne Singleton, second place on 44 pts Glenn Rees and Rob Lodders.

Nearest the pin we had Wayne Singleton.

This Sunday we be our 18-hole monthly medal tee off at 10.00am.

Proserpine Veteran Golfers fielded some impressive scores despite the oppressively humid conditions last week.  

Colin Hounsell came in with 37, followed by John Oates, 33, and Trevor Paroz with 32, but the absolute star of the day was in the ladies: Leanne Alexander with an amazing score of 42.

Mandy Patterson put in a 32 for second place, and Tiina Randmae in third with 29.

Pin Shots went to John Oates on the first, Peter Fox and Colin Hounsell on fifth, and Barry Mortimer and Billy Jesser on 18.

Ladies, Jenny Hounsell on first and fifth (in the Hole), and Leanne Alexander on 18.

The course will be closed this week for renovations.

Tuesday’s Competition at Proserpine Golf Club was won by Leanne Alexander, who showed everyone how to play in Club’s Tuesday Stableford with a very nice score of 42 points.

Chris Brett was five points behind on 37, and Nathan Sothmann edged out Karl Kirkwood and Mason Kuchel for third place on 34.

Ross Tong managed the only two shot of the day, and John Dodds won the NTP.

Wednesday Competition: The Ladies Wednesday Stableford saw Toni Clauss once again on the podium winning the Airllywood voucher with 35 points.

The ever-consistent Lyn Muller in second with 33, and Pauline Redpath third, 32.

Pin shots went to Trish McNeill twice, Tiina Randmae and Rehab Hull once a-piece.

Lenny Booroff topped the Men’s Wednesday Competition with 36, and Brad Fleet in second place on 34 points. Aaron Prosser third with 32.

Thursday Competition: Mick Cragg was in form to take out Division One of the Thursday Stableford with a +1 in the Versus Par competition, winning from Brad Fleet and Simon Della Santa on countback.

Adam Tester continued his winning form taking out Division Two also on +1, with Peter Fox in second place on 0, and Jim Cochrane third with -2.

Friday 9 Hole Competition: The Club has introduced a Friday 9-hole competition, the first one falling on St Patricks Day. Well done to Ben Smith being our first winner with 20 points, closely followed by Nathan Boys on 19, and Nathan Holohan, also 19. Nathan Sothmann and Michael Cragg won the NTP’s.

Saturday Competition: 67 players competed in the MBW Stableford, Trish McNeill winning the ladies with 33 points, on a countback from Mandy Patterson in second place, and Pauline Redpath in third, both 32.

Wednesday’s competition at Bowen Golf Club was a single stableford event sponsored by the Club with Ladies’ winner Grace Nott.

Ms Nott tallied an impressive 35 points, while runner up on a countback was Elona Lynch close behind, 34 points.

Pin shots to Leanne Swan, Grace Nott, Joy Hose, Donna Wright, and Michelle Campbell, who also had a OBP.  

Men’s winner on a countback was Doug Power 40 points, runner up Walter Maguire, 40 as well.

Saturday’s competition was a 4BBB stableford event for the Easter Turkeys with winners on a countback Robyn Newell and Jo Kukura - both 45 points – and the runners up managed the same tally: David Carus and Ben Bon, 45 points.

Whilst the senior Men’s Premier sides struggled for numbers and results against Lions on the weekend, the Premier Women continued the winning form with a dominant performance against Mackay Rangers at Rangers Park.

The solid 4-1 win was punctuated by a stunning long-range goal by Willow Gaffney striking the ball well outside the box and finding the top corner.

Dani Kinnear set up another great goal with a perfectly placed corner. The win makes it two from two for the Premier Women.

The Reserve Women went down 3-1 to Rangers; a great effort for the many players having their first season in the sport.

Both Premier Men’s sides were short of players, but not effort, and took on strong Lions outfits and despite minimal substitutes, made the home team work for their spoils.

The Reserves were unable to hold onto an early lead, eventually losing 4-2, whilst the Premier Men conceded two early goals and were unable to reply in a 2-0 loss.

On Friday night the Division One and Two lads travelled to the Wanderers fields and continued their good form. Div Two looked likely to take their first win but ended with a 1-1 draw.

Similarly, the Div One boys had a constant tussle and narrowly lost in the dying minutes, 3-2.

Under 13 Premiers faced a tough and aggressive Magpies outfit and despite a great effort went down 2-0.

A similar result for the U15 Division One side who couldn’t buy a goal despite many shots and near misses – both young sides have made a good start to the season and shown lots of promise.

The Under 15s continued their winning ways beating Magpies 5-0 and looking strong contenders for finals already.

Coach Peter Farrell was happy with how the club was tracking across all age groups: “Lots to work and build on but great attitude and effort throughout the club.

“This will be a great year again for Whitsunday United.”

This weekend the Men play at Whitsunday Sports Park, with League One Men against Rangers on Friday night from 7pm and the Premier Squads against Wanderers on Saturday night from 5pm.

Whitsunday United’s Under 15 Premiers satisfied after another strong performance, wining 5-0 against Mackay Magpies

Wangaratta Bowls Club’s jackpot went off in the game between the teams of Roger Mumby, Kevin Jewell, and Greg Colquhoun, and Deb Retchless, Robyn Stitt, and Linda Smith on Tuesday.

Roger’s team were the winners, and in the other game, Tracy Stanford, Sue Shearing, and Marg Wilson defeated Stumpy Adams, Merle Elphinstone, and Lyn Danvers.

On Saturday afternoon, Bowen St Mary’s Catholic School students, together with teachers and parents, came to the club for a fun afternoon on the green.

“It was great to see the young people out having fun learning to bowl and members enjoyed teaching them the ropes,” Club member Penny Warren said.

Club Competition Ladies’ handicapped consistency results: Jocelyn Defranciscis defeated Deb Retchless; and Robyn Stitt defeated Penny Warren.

Men’s A Singles: Allan Rolfe defeated Mark Drummond. This Sunday morning ladies’ pairs will be playing.

Sunday social bowls resulted in the winners coming out on Rink Two, they were Bron Tolcher, Denise Wallace, and Fely Duncan who defeated Jocelyn Defranciscis, Laurie Land, and Mark Defranciscis.

Other games: Merle Elphinstone, Penny Warren, and Greg Colquhoun defeated Gwenda Lydom, Deb Retchless, and Kevin Daniels.

Bill Myers, Sue Shearing, and Allan Rolfe defeated Lindy Suann, Kevin Jewell, and Kennedy Whitton, while Robyn Stitt and Mark Drummond defeated Linda Scells and Pat Tracey.

Proserpine Bowls Club launched into its full competition calendar last week with every rink hosting either a social or competitive match-up.

On Wednesday, the club hosted social bowls with two games of triples played with very close outcomes.  

Alen Sanderson, Bruce Uhe, and Sandy Daffara defeated Jim Bownds, John Anderson, and Warren Wilson, 18-16. Pat Bownds played double lead in the game between the team of Pat, Mike Harrison, and Heather Brown, and Pat, Barry Zillmann, and Peter Lawton, which ended 16-13.

On Sunday, John Anderson and Peter Lawton had the narrowest of wins defeating Mary Hedgelong and Warren Wilson, 22-21, in a game of 2/4/2 Pairs.

In the other game of Triples Mike Harrison played double second: Alen Sanderson, Mike, and Heather Brown defeated Bruce Uhe, Mike, and Sandy Daffara, 24-16.

Saturday morning there were games of Club Championship Singles played: Warren Wilson defeated Ross Reville in the first of the day, 25-21; and Scott Hamilton defeated Barry Saroglia 25- 19 in the second.

And in the last two, Luchie Gardel defeated Toby Craig 25-21; and Gavin Milne defeated Jim Quod 25-19.  

Club Championship Pairs were played in the afternoon between Toby and Marcus Craig against Jonathan Bye and Wayne Handley, ending 17-14. Barry Saroglia and Gavin Milne defeated Bryan Davy and Luchie Gardel, 19-16, and Todd Leys and Ross Reville defeated Jim Quod and Dale Haack, 31-10

There will be Club Championship games of Singles, B Singles and Pairs played this Saturday, 9.00am.

An expression of Interest sheet is on the club board - Pennants competition begins April 15.

On Sunday, March 26, the Club will host visiting bowlers playing social bowls and staying for a BBQ after the game. The combination will be provided at just $20 per person.

The club extends its wishes of luck to Wayne Handley, Michael Kinnear, Shane Kinnear, Grahame Kinnear, and Barry Saroglia, who are all playing in the Northern Challenge at North Mackay Bowls Club this coming weekend.  

A special mention to Proserpine Bowl’s Club member Scott Kinnear, for his efforts, with the assistance of his brother Shane as his Director, at the International Blind Bowlers Carnival held at Tweed Heads.

Scott played in the B4 Section and came home with Gold Medals in both the Singles and the Mixed Pairs.
