Road Runners Tackle Rural View

The Mackay Road Runners held their second meet for the 2022 season at hilly Rural View over the weekend.

Nearly 70 runners tackled the testing yet scenic course set by Thomas Wendt, with the option of a 5km or 10km loop.

Club President Tim Magoffin welcomed many new runners to the event as well as a loyal contingent of existing members.

Junior member Hamish Donnollan and Paul Mackenzie led the pack in the 10km loop, showing great camaraderie by encouraging each other throughout the run.

Werner Van Der Linde, Jan Smith, Tahnie Malagueno, Carolyn Mapes, Glynis Forse, Carmel Mahon, Emily Dalglish, Jose Short, and Carmel Grech all displayed superb endurance and stamina in the 10km run and are looking to start the 2022 program in fine form.

The club is seeing an encouraging variety of age and ability participate, with lively juniors Lily Leven and Millie Bishop continuing their commitment to health and fitness throughout the season.

Race day volunteers Arthur Dick, Tim Magoffin, Andrew Short, and Jo Hughes made the Rural View event possible.

Many of the club’s athletes to watch will participate in the 5km Club Championship taking place at Queen’s Park on Sunday, the first championship run of the season.

Hamish and Paul will be lining up against some talented competition including Justin, Oliver, and Toby Rule, Rodney Elworthy, Cristian (Crispy) Smith, Luke Leven, Joe Grech, Michael Sholer, and Thomas Wendt.

The 5km Club Championship event will take place at Queen’s Park on Shakespeare Street from 6.30 Sunday morning.

Runners are also reminded that registrations are open for the Mackay Marina Run taking place in June.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Mackay Branch of the Leukaemia Foundation.
