Knowledge Changes Everything

Knowledge Changes Everything

How education empowers families through pregnancy, birth and beyond One of the biggest challenges facing modern parents isn’t a lack of information. It’s the sheer amount of it. A quick online search can provide thousands of answers about pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleep, and recovery. Social media, friends, and family often add even more advice. Yet despite living in a time of endless information, many parents tell me they feel more overwhelmed than ever. As a pelvic floor and women’s health physiotherapist, I see the power of good education every day. Knowledge doesn’t remove every challenge that comes with pregnancy, birth, or parenthood, but it can transform how we experience them. It replaces fear with understanding, uncertainty with confidence, and confusion with informed decision-making. Pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period bring significant change. Understanding what’s normal, when to seek help, and what support is available can help families feel more prepared and empowered during one of life’s biggest transitions. But not all education is created equal. In a world where information is available at our fingertips, it can be difficult to know what to trust. Social media can be a wonderful source of connection, but it can also expose families to misinformation, fear-based messaging, and advice that isn’t supported by research. That’s why access to high-quality, evidence-based education is so important. Good education doesn’t tell people what to do. Instead, it provides accurate information, explains the options available, and empowers people to make decisions that are right for themselves and their families. When parents have access to trusted information and local support, they are more likely to seek help early, ask questions, and feel confident raising a family. It’s also why events that bring health professionals, support services, and families together can be so valuable. Recently, our community came together at the Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond Expo, where hundreds of local families connected with professionals, support groups, and businesses supporting pregnancy, birth, babies, and parenthood. Throughout the day, families had access to evidence-based information and the opportunity to ask questions directly to local professionals. One of the most rewarding parts of the day wasn’t simply sharing information; it was seeing conversations happen. Parents asking questions. Expectant mothers feeling reassured. Families discovering services they didn’t know existed. For many, it was a reminder that support is closer than they think. The expo was also a wonderful reminder of how fortunate we are in Mackay. We have an incredible network of professionals, organisations, educators, and businesses who genuinely care about supporting families. Seeing them together highlighted the strength of our community and the village supporting families through every stage of their journey. A heartfelt thank you to all the exhibitors, sponsors, and families who attended, and to our major sponsors, Daly Bay, NG Gyne Health Care, BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), and Women’s Health Physio Mackay, whose support helped make the event possible. Education won’t make parenting perfect. There will still be sleepless nights and unexpected challenges. But access to trusted, evidence-based information gives families something incredibly valuable: confidence. And confidence has a way of changing everything. Because empowered parents don’t just build healthier families. They build stronger, healthier communities too.

Queensland Theatre’s Calamity Jane is Coming to the PEC this October

Queensland Theatre’s Calamity Jane is Coming to the PEC this October

The Wild West comes to Proserpine this October and for some lucky audience members, the action won’t just be happening on stage. Queensland Theatre's acclaimed production of Calamity Jane is heading to the Proserpine Entertainment Centre, with tickets now on sale. Alongside traditional theatre seating, a limited number of patrons will have the chance to sit on stage inside Deadwood's famous Golden Garter Saloon, becoming part of the production itself. The immersive experience places audience members as drinkers, gamblers and bystanders of a chaotic wild west saloon, blurring the lines of being a performer and a spectator. Director Richard Carroll first brought this depiction to life in 2016, before adding in the colour and flare of staging when it hit the mainstage in 2018. “There is such a liveliness to this show, a sense among the cast and audience that ‘we’re all in this together’,” Richard said. “A genuine intimacy and authenticity comes from immersing the audience in the production, and making them part of the on stage action.” Based on the famous 1950s Doris Day musical film, the production takes audiences back to the American frontier, following the adventures of sharpshooter Calamity Jane, played by Queensland star Naomi Price. The revival celebrates the unpredictable nature of the unconventional western women, challenging gender stereotypes while also showing true vulnerability and bravery. “In a time when men called the shots and a place where lawlessness ruled, Calamity was this legendary woman, a daredevil who unapologetically refused to play by anyone else’s rules,” Naomi said. “To play such a pioneering woman who – decades later – is still so admired and adored is a genuine privilege, and I can’t wait to kick open the saloon doors.” The production also features some of musical theatre's most beloved songs, including Secret Love, The Deadwood Stage, Just Blew In From The Windy City and The Black Hills of Dakota. Performed through a piano-led score, the familiar tunes help breathe new life into the frontier classic while preserving the charm that has captivated audiences for more than 70 years. With high demand expected, particularly for the limited on-stage saloon seating, theatre-goers are encouraged to secure their place before tickets sell out. Dirty Deeds Set To Rock & Roll At Airlie Beach Hotel

Rock fans are set for a high-voltage start to the weekend when Australia's leading AC/DC tribute act, Dirty Deeds, takes centre stage at the Airlie Beach Hotel this July 4th and 5th. This sensational tribute act will get the crowd pumping with a stage-rocking performance, bringing AC/DC's iconic hits to life in a show dedicated to both frontman Bon Scott and his successor, Brian Johnson. “If you're looking for some good rock and roll, some authentic ACDC covers, Come down,” said Grant Allen, who rocks Bon Scott. “We're a must-see, and you won't be disappointed.” The NSW-based tribute band has spent the past two decades touring the country, delivering a high-voltage performance and a passionate commitment to recreating the sound and spirit of one of Australia's greatest rock bands. “This is our era of music that we grew up with and we want to keep that spirit alive as long as possible,” said Allen. “It’s all about keeping a legacy alive to make sure that the younger generation enjoy it too.” With Grant taking on the role of Bon Scott and Scotty stepping into the shoes of Brian Johnson, the band performs songs from every era of AC/DC, delivering a setlist packed with fan favourites spanning decades of rock history. Supporting them, is Michael Ward on drums as Phil Rudd, Mike Sheehan on bass as Cliff Williams and Dylan Hartas on rhythm guitar as Cliff Williams, combining decades of experience to recreate the unmistakable sound, energy and power that made AC/DC one of the world's greatest rock bands. Completing the lineup is Mick Pelligrini, wielding his iconic Gibson SG in tribute to AC/DC guitarist Angus Young. Dressed in the trademark school uniform and armed with a wireless guitar system, Mick roams through the crowd under the band's "Jailbreak Spotlight", delivering the solos and high-energy stage presence that made Angus Young a rock legend. Their all-star list of world-wide gigs include headline appearances at the Snowy Bike Ride in Thredbo, performances at the Kidgeeridge Music Festival and Cops and Rodders charity fundraiser, as well as Australia Day celebrations, corporate events and countless pub and club shows. With years of experience bringing AC/DC's music to life on stage, Dirty Deeds draws the crowd wherever it performs. Whether you're a lifelong AC/DC fan or simply looking for a lively afternoon at your favourite local pub, Dirty Deeds promises a weekend of classic rock, big riffs and plenty of energy at the Airlie Beach Hotel. “We aim to highlight the wealth of diverse local artistic talent in our region and attract a high standard of interstate works.”

Days for Girls Cent Sale

August 24, 2023

What we sometimes take for granted, girls and women in many parts of the world consider a luxury.

When it’s life and death just to feed your children, many families living in poverty can’t afford sanitary items for their girls. Without the means to manage a menstrual period, many of these girls end up missing school or missing work, losing out on opportunities because they have no way of protecting themselves from period stigma.

Days for Girls Mackay is a team of dedicated volunteers who produce washable reusable sanitary packs for women in developing countries.

These kits allow young girls to attend school, and women to go about their daily lives. The kits empower - and are a great stigma eraser - for women who would otherwise be isolated while menstruating.

Days for Girls' aim is to afford all women the dignity, health and opportunity they deserve.

Fundraiser

Days for Girls is holding a cent sale on Saturday, July 30 at Goosies Sports Club, from 12 midday. There are more than 200 items, an auction, raffle and lucky door prize. Proceeds raised will ensure this group of volunteers can continue their work to provide

Baring All For Festival Finale

August 24, 2023

It’s a show about sex, taboos, female pleasure, speaking out and the sharing of women’s stories.

BARE, a live cabaret show by The Just Saying Project, is coming to the MECC North Foyer on Saturday, July 30, at 7.30am and on Sunday, July 31, at 2.30pm.

According to The Just Saying Project founder Fallon Drewett, the show, which explores the female body in all its pleasure and pain, is in its second iteration.

“Now, more than ever, women are making noise and they have found their power in not staying quiet,” Ms Drewett said.

“Revamping BARE’s storyline for its second season has been a thrilling process – this event truly is a show that both women and men will enjoy,” she said.

"BARE is a show that celebrates women's stories but also shares the pleasure and pain of being a woman.

"Part of this season of BARE is about encouraging the men in women's lives to join them for this cabaret. The delivery of this message is performed in a fun, entertaining and engaging way that will make your belly hurt from laughter.”

Deputy Mayor Karen May said BARE was a triumph of local talent and was a fitting finale for the core program of the Mackay Festival of Arts.

“The Just Saying Project have done some wonderful projects to date that are all about recognising and celebrating our local women,” Cr May said.

“This show is no exception and is 100 per cent local, featuring local writers, actors and more than 30 women who will take part in a Body Love Runway and a dance for the finale,” she said.

“They will be led by two fantastic local providers, Boutique Burlesque by Bailey and RNB Dance Fitness. The show script was also co-written by Fallon Drewett and Mackay performer Sammie Mitchell.

“Make sure you grab your tickets as soon as possible, because this will be a great night out.”

Tickets are available from the MECC Box Office or online at themecc.com.au/festivals

Tom Turns 100

August 24, 2023

You might remember Tom Barry.

Mackay Life published a story about Tom in our May 6 edition earlier this year, speaking to him about his incredible life story and his telling of it in his memoir ‘The Prodigious Leap’.

Tom raises his bat next Monday, August 1, celebrating his 100th birthday with a book launch this weekend.

Tom has already received birthday cards from some high-profile friends including member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia David Hurley and his wife Linda and, of course, the Queen.

“She wrote ‘Dear Tommy,’” Tom jested with a cheeky grin.

“No, she did not, don’t tell lies,” Ann laughed.

Tom says turning 100 is an exciting occasion, but it all starts again come August 2.

“I have no worries, nor should I have,” he said.

“When the second of August comes, you make new plans.

“There’s always something new to look forward to.”

Friends and family will help Tom celebrate, with guests travelling from as far as Adelaide, Brisbane, and Victoria, some of which he hasn’t seen for years.

Tom and his wife Ann say Tom’s book wouldn’t have been published as quickly and successfully as it has without the support of Bolton Clarke’s At Home Support team, the Regional Arts Development Fund Grant and the generosity of their family and friends including Jo Penola and Jo and Doug Blackhurst.

“You can’t even begin to say the amount of time and effort and money and all sorts of stuff that they’ve done, and they do it without thinking, they do it because they want to,” said Ann.

“They’re just beautiful people.”

Tom is the recipient of a package provided by Bolton Clarke which brought now close friend Jo Penola into his and Ann’s lives.

“I still think it’s an amazing thing that a homecare package for an aged person can help them with things like that because one of the things it’s meant to do is help a person with the package reach their goals,” said Jo.

“When you’ve lived a hundred years, obviously you’ve seen a hundred years’ worth of stuff happen, so that’s just so amazing, and (Tom’s) got such fabulous recall of that hundred years.”

“Well, that’s because it was so interesting,” responded Tom.

‘A Prodigious Leap’ will be available for purchase and signing by author Tom Barry at Magpies Sporting Club tomorrow, Saturday, July 30 between 1 and 5pm.

The book can also be purchased on Amazon.

A Fresh Take On The Rocks’ Coral Sea Cuisine

August 24, 2023

The Rocks Restaurant at Coral Sea Resort is stepping up its culinary game, combining some of the best views in the Whitsundays with a modern Australian menu created by its new chef: Michael Dominici.

Michael has decade long career spanning across Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and the Gold Coast, and his menu refresh at The Rocks is focused on dishes that showcase the best local and Australian produce.

The pick of the bunch is his signature ‘Rock’ entrée, an edible work of art featuring specially prepared black onyx beef fillet with yuzu spiced dressing, mustard and charred shallot.

“My favourite dish is our South Australian Lamb backstrap main, wrapped in house made lamb bacon, served with pea emulsion and a mint glaze,” said Michael.

“I can’t wait to start serving it.”

Michael is most excited about the freshly caught fish of the day options including Whitsundays snapper perfumed with the scent of citrus and smoking paperbark.

“The best seafood is the fish you can catch right out the front. Our fishermen have boats running up and down miles of coastline here, and I’m also using the strong local supplier relationships I built in my previous head chef roles to bring the best produce to diners at The Rocks,” Michael said.

The Rocks patrons can enjoy the coral sea breeze while working their tan and their tastebuds over lunch, dining alfresco in the recently refurbished, relaxing poolside surrounds – courtesy of Michael’s new menu.

Craig Bodinnar slaps his bass, powering on with split bleeding fingers to keep the magic alive in Motown, while Andy Byrnes nails it on the drums – a groove master – and then, Wes Harder on keys is a soulful triumph.

There’s a reason this showtime Motown extravaganza has sold out such iconic venues, and they’ll be at the Airlie Beach Hotel – Signed, Sealed, Delivered – on Saturday August 6 and Sunday August 7 from 2.00pm to 5.30pm.

Come and dance the afternoon away!

Minions: The Rise Of Gru

August 24, 2023

There’s no reason to really tread new ground in the Despicable Me franchise – it’s whacky, goofball stuff all the way down has kept working for it each time.

In fact, it’s strangely paying dividends this time, you might have seen it in the news: it has traction with a counter-culture movement of teenage boys dressed in suits, coordinated on Tik Tok, calling themselves Gentleminions.

What a horrid portmanteau.

This newest iteration - the second in the series putting the adventures of the Minions front and centre - follows that familiar rail track of madcap silliness and raspberry blowing.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is where the bean-shaped evil-groupies deliver a concentrated hit of irrepressible, coocoo nonsense. It’s a bit of harmless fun – just like those hordes of Gentleminions heading to cinemas across the globe to watch what they’re calling a “cinematic classic comparable to The Godfather”.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming, though: in the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carell, you heard it right) is growing up in the suburbs as a fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6.

Hatching a plan to become evil enough to join them, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions.

Together with Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto - a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please - deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.

And, when the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (That’s right, it’s Oscar winner Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member.

It doesn't go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil.

This kid’s film is certainly enjoying a bit of the spotlight thanks to its ironic audience of kids having fun but is also a bit of fun in its own right – so catch Minions: The Rise of Gru at the Bowen Summergarden Cinema.

Showing next weekend, Saturday July 30, 3.20pm and Sunday July 31, 3.20pm

Fete One Week Out

August 24, 2023

There’s always something for everyone at the Cannonvale State Primary School Fete, and this year’s no different.

The annual fete has become one of the region’s biggest events, especially for local families who enjoy the opportunity to spend a day in the sun enjoying the rides.

Set for Sunday, July 31 from 10.00am to 2.00pm, the Cannonvale State School Fete will transform the school into a celebratory stadium of shows, stalls, and tasty treats.

Rides this year include Dodgem Cars, Sizzler, King Flyer, Super Slide, Roller Coaster, Cannibal Pots (Tea Cup Ride), Merry Go Round, Paw Patrol, Lost World and Dora Combo Castle.

This year there’s also set to be live entertainment alongside the smorgasbord of food like fairy floss, hamburgers, and a sausage sizzle.

But, for students heading to the event, there’s no more appealing stall than the Dunk A Teacher – an ever-popular choice for kids looking to soak their favourite teacher in the name of a bit of fun.

The best part of the day: all funds raised will go towards new playgrounds for the students.

President of the Cannonvale State School Parents and Association (P&C), Sabrina Mitchell was so excited to host what she said would be an amazing event for the whole region.

“There’s more to do than just rides, and it’s not just for Cannonvale State School teachers, students and parents; it’s for the community,” Ms Mitchell said.

“It’s about community and family fun.”

Ride tickets are running at $30 dollar presale for unlimited rides, or can be purchased on the day for $35.

The Cannonvale State School Fete is just on the horizon, with organisers excited to show the community the “bigger and better” event this year

The Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s tenth anniversary just got noisier with the announcement that Jon Stevens, Masters of Pop, Loonaloop and more are joining the line-up.

Acts like Ben Ransom, The Re-Mains, Niksta, The Hipshooters, Matt Angell and The Gold Diggers, Salt and Steel, and Tropical State of Mind, will be joining the all-star line-up for the November 4 to 6 Festival.

Finding fame firstly as the lead singer of Noiseworks, followed by a stint as frontman of INXS, and latterly collaborating with Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, Jon Stevens is widely recognised as one of the most talented rock musicians to emerge from Australia in recent memory.

Having performed and holidayed in the Whitsundays many times before, but never at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music, Stevens is counting down the days to what has become one of Queensland’s most iconic live music events.

“I’ve heard lots of great reports about the Airlie Beach festival over the years and have always wanted to perform there,” he said.

“I can’t wait to play this festival and share the stage with all the amazing Australian artists on the line-up.

“I’ll be performing all the hits from Noiseworks and INXS – you may never see me do this show again, so I encourage people not to miss it.”

Festival founder, Gavin Butlin said there was something for literally everyone at this 10th anniversary event.

New Beachside Music Festival On The Horizon

August 24, 2023

Adding to an impressive lineup of music gigs in Mackay, a new beachside music festival has received a funding boost to bring people back to the beach.

Mackay Regional Council has approved more than $47,000 in grants towards 11 projects as part of the latest Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) round, with the beachside music festival, the Keswick Island Artwork Trail and a photographic exhibition featuring water sport culture all among the winners.

RADF Committee chair Cr Fran Mann said a celebration of coastal living was a real theme in the applications for this round of funding.

“The committee was pleased to see so many projects that celebrate our beaches, islands and the way of life that makes our region so appealing,” Cr Mann said.

“The Beach Sounds music festival is a new event, hosted by Mackay Surf Life Saving Club, that’s all about ‘bringing people back to the beach’ and giving local artists the opportunity to perform,” she said.

“The club hopes that Beach Sounds will become an annual fundraising event which will not only create much needed funds for them, but also create an environment of great food, wine and music at beautiful Harbour Beach.”

Mackay Surf Life Saving Club received a $7500 grant towards Beach Sounds.

Cr Mann said Mackay Adventure Lodge had also been successful, with a $4000 grant towards the Living Room project.

“This is a photographic account of Mackay's outdoor water-sporting lifestyle through the lens of two emerging photographers, Jacob Vinall and Brent Coles,” she said.

Applicant Amanda Pelagalli said the aim of the exhibition was to get a group of likeminded people together to talk about water sports, the art of photography and help get new people into both.

“We believe that by staying active and connected, we stay healthy and on the straight and narrow,” Ms Pelagalli said.

Cr Mann said $9457 had been approved to develop the Keswick Island Art Trail under the Green Arts category.

The project received a previous RADF grant of $5656 for concept development.

“Nine quality artworks are being installed in key locations for a two-month ephemeral art trail on Keswick Island that is a fringe event in the 2022 Mackay Festival of Arts,” she said.

According to the applicant Eva Browne-Paterson, Wildcat Mackay will bring visitors out to the island to experience the trail.

“There will be minimum impact from the installation of the artworks, and it will take little time to dismantle the art trail and put the locations back to their natural state,” Ms Browne-Paterson said.

“Although the art trail will be ephemeral, we are intending to store the artworks and reuse/repurpose them for use in alternate locations in future art trails,” she said.

Also funded under this round to the value of $8976 is an exciting project by Janet Ambrose which will lead to an exhibition and book of high-quality visual artworks and stories showcasing elders from the diverse cultures of Mackay.

“Mackay is hugely diverse with over 80 different cultural groups,” Ms Ambrose said.

“This project will showcase our community elders, chosen through liaison with partners and paid cultural advisors,” she said. “In some cases, younger members of families will conduct the interviews with their grandparents.”

Also funded under this round were:

$6815 towards Louder (Youth-Led Forum Theatre Project) by Zahrah Andrews

$1946 towards Crafty Hands, a Holiday Workshops for Pioneer Valley Kids led by the Valley Spinners and Crafts Group Inc

$1382 towards a Printmaking Collage Workshop with Laura Castell to be hosted by Printbank Mackay Inc

$1950 towards Fiona Flohr attending Life-In-Style-Melbourne with Shelley Pisani for professional development

$3588 towards developing “OUR Artist Trail”, an Artist trail in the Isaac, Mackay and Whitsunday regions, by Margaret Burgess

$1700 towards the 2022 International Men's Day Art Show by Shed Happens Mackay

$7050 towards the Whitsundays Songwriters Residency - Emerging Artists’ Workshop where 12 emerging local songwriters will be mentored by professional songwriters

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the State Government is investing $2.08 million through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) in 2021-22, matched with a contribution of approximately $2.3 million from 59 councils across the state.

“RADF is a great example of working together to deliver our COVID-19 economic recovery plan, supporting employment opportunities and creating new arts and cultural experiences in local and regional communities,” Minister Enoch said.

“RADF in 2021–2022 will provide valuable social, health and economic outcomes for regional Queenslanders, and support our government’s 10-year arts roadmap priorities to strengthen Queensland communities, activate local places, and drive social change across the state.

“Our investment complements the Palaszczuk Government’s wider commitment to regional arts, including continued support of $6 million over four years for the Regional Arts Services Network.”
