The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Local counsellor Karen Angel is celebrating the release of her first book, Wilbur’s Worry Clouds, a combination of fiction and activity that aims to help children deal with anxiety.
Suitable for children ages five and up, the book has two parts, leading with a sweet story about a young boy called Wilbur, who, with the help of family and friends, learns various ways to deal with his worry clouds. The story is designed to be educational, starting easy-to-approach conversations about the science of anxiety, and how it affects our brain, bodies and our emotions. Wilbur’s trusty dog Dexter of course plays a starring role.
The second part of the book is to be used as a workbook, containing over 70 pages of evidence-based therapeutic activities, including word searches and puzzles, meditations and breathing exercises, journaling, CBT, EFT Tapping, and arts and crafts. Kids can use the workbook independently or with their parents, providing families with an easy way into crucial conversations about mental health.
Creating mental health resources for children felt like a natural progression for Karen, who is an accredited mental health clinician with 40 years of experience in the field. The idea followed on from her experiences leading play therapy, running children’s group work sessions at the Proserpine Community Centre.
Anxiety is a common issue children face, and can be a normal part of growing up, when addressed and dealt with properly. When anxiety disorders arise though, parents are encouraged to take action.
“Worry is a normal emotion, but it’s one that can get out of control.” Karen explains. “It’s important to know the signs. Early intervention is key, so you can tackle the anxiety when the child is as young as possible.”
With this debut book newly released, Karen is already working on a second, which will focus on depression. More topics are planned to follow, with Karen envisioning a whole suite of resources that parents can rely on, covering a range of issues, from anger to grief.

Local Whitsundays entrepreneur-turned-author Rick Brown is making waves with his new book, The Mysterious Mr Isaac, a modern business fable for business leaders.
Drawing on decades of corporate experience, Rick distils practical, timeless lessons on mentorship, client care, and sustainable business success.
Set on a crowded London Underground train, the book tells the story of a young professional who meets Mr Isaac, an unassuming mentor whose wisdom transforms the way he approaches business. Through their conversations, readers learn that real success is built on integrity, perseverance, and genuine client care – not shortcuts.
Rick, who built a multi-million-dollar business before retiring to the Whitsundays, recently shared key insights from the book at the 2025 Whitsundays Business Conference, hosted by the Whitsundays Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He highlighted a critical distinction for regional businesses: “A customer makes a purchase. A client trusts you to deliver value consistently. Understanding this distinction can transform how small and regional businesses operate, grow, and build long-term relationships.”

Local blues musician Zed Charles has rocked the CD category of the Memphis Blues Challenge with his debut album, Hear My Word. His submission rose through the ranks, making it into the third round of the competition and finishing in joint sixth, over a vast number of applicants from all over the world.
Hear My Word had already achieved Aussie acclaim, holding the no. 2 spot on the ABRAC charts for three months, and remarkably, the album was entirely self-produced. Zed performed each component, from percussion, to bass and rhythm guitar to vocals, even writing his own lyrics.
Describing his sound, Zed says “There’s traditional blues, and people who want to take the genre and evolve it a little more. I’d say I’m probably in the second category. It’s a tricky sort of thing to keep those traditional sounds and styles but also maybe add something, evolve it, or push it in a new direction. Put your stamp on it. I think that’s, believe it or not, the reason why my album did so well in the competition.”
Zed grew up in Bowen, gaining his early musical training at the conservatorium in Mackay before going to jazz school in Brisbane, staying there for most of his early career. Eventually, he joined the heavy rock band, The Royal Artillery, before Covid-19 provided a pause in which he moved back home to the Whitsundays. Here, in paradise, Zed stripped back to his roots, and dipped back into the blues.
Having played gigs across Australia (including the Airlie Beach Music Festival), and internationally, solo, in bands, and alongside names like Mungo Jerry, Zed Charles is now looking to bring his focus back home.
He is currently working on launching a Whitsundays Blues Association, working with Mackay Blues Club to “nuture a bigger blues network in Australia… but also nurture the people who play blues, give them a platform.”
Zed’s goal is to help more people fall in love with blues music, whilst creating pathways and opportunities that show young people that they can find their success and launch their music careers right here, in the Whitsundays. He highlights Airlie Beach as a hub of live music and artistry, with its density of venues and music-lovers, that can have the potential to launch musicians just as equally as the big cities usually associated with the gig scene. “Watch this space,” he says.
With projects planned with Seth Enslow from the Crusty Demons, sponsorship from local business Poschelk Guitars, and sights set on playing stateside in Texas, Zed Charles has a big year ahead. Catch him next hosting the Porch Blues Festival in Caboolture, on 2 May.

Well known Mackay photographer, Mark Fitz, excitingly announced one of his most beloved, award-winning pictures is now out in the world following the publishment of Craig Sheather’s Terry the Turtle!
Officially printed in December of 2025, the children’s fiction book features the cheeky Lady Elliot Island turtle seemingly “flipping the bird” to Fitz’ camera. Terry attracted a world of attention the moment Mark debuted the photograph in 2018, with Mark recalling the photo instantly went viral on social media, accumulating thousands of shares, millions of likes, and even a few news stories!
“When Craig came to me with the idea for a book based on Terry the Turtle featuring my photography, I loved the idea instantly,” Mark enthused.
“It’s been so exciting watching the story develop and grow and to have it out in the world now is a dream come true!”

The iconic Whitsundays Songwriters Festival has been nominated for Festival of the Year – People’s Choice at the Queensland Music Awards. This nomination is a terrific recognition of the passion, hard work, and creative vision behind the festival, led by co-founder and Director, and local Whitsundays singer-songwriter, Karen Jacobsen, presented under the auspices of the Whitsundays Arts Festival.
The fifth Whitsundays Songwriters Festival will take place from 3 to 7 June 2026. Highlights will include the much-loved Concert and Conversation on Saturday evening, 6 June, along with three levels of songwriting workshops held during the day: Beginner, Intermediate, and Masterclass.
The songwriter’s festival emerged as part of the Whitsundays Arts Festival in 2021.
“It began when I performed at the closing event in concert for the Whitsundays Arts Festival in 2021 and I met the president Jess Begun”, said Karen.
“I told her that I always dreamt of a songwriter festival, and she said there’s no reason we can’t do that next year.”
In 2022, the Whitsundays Songwriters Festival debuted.
“It was co-founded with the Whitsundays Arts Festival as well as Francesca de Valence head of I Heart Songwriting in Brisbane. We created a songwriter residency, inviting six professional songwriters from around Australia to come together for four days and co-write and collaborate.”
The program has feature incredible songwriters such as Vika & Linda, Tony Childs and locals Graham Connors and Brad Butcher.
The program features a concert and Q&A interviewing the expert panel, with people performing songs they wrote the previous day.
Despite the event’s previous success, Karen reflected on the difficulties of garnering support for arts and culture in the region.
“It’s been an ongoing challenge in my capacity as an art creator in the region to access funding. Our volunteers spend hundreds of hours creating materials for grants and funding applications. I would love to see an equal level of investment in arts that we see for sports. In my experience arts are equally important, and having children and adults engaged in all manner of arts activities creates a healthy society.”
The songwriting festival has creating amazing opportunities for those enthusiastic about creativity.
“Every year, there are profound experiences in the workshops and the concert events. It’s wonderful to have the kind of feedback we have from the local community.”
The festival has seen great support from sponsors and partners.
“We are really grateful to our partners and sponsors from the previous years and, as we embark on our 2026 festival, we would love to hear from any community members interested in our programmes.”

The Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network will be holding a special free screening on Thursday 12 February at the Reef Gateway Hotel. The film, entitled ‘When The Dust Settles’, was made by award winning a director Stuart McKay and sheds light on the issues many men face, opening conversations around supporting community growth and change.
It is a visually striking documentary that follows three Australians forever changed by the ripple effects of suicide.
The film screening has been brought to the region by Aaron Schultz, founder of the Outback Mind Foundation. Though the film features heavy themes, it is meant to be uplifting and accessible to all, however the team will provide staff for anyone who is triggered by the content. The film is designed to be inspiring, encouraging communities to get together to support those that are impacted or bereaved by suicide, ultimately putting in future measures to prevent it.
All are encouraged to come along to the screening. The greater the participation, the more support that can be fostered for an incredibly vital cause which impacts many across the region. Whether it is individuals, council staff, sports clubs or community groups. All are welcome to come along for a great night.
It is wonderful to see that the work that is being done by the Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network, as they continue to push important initiatives in 2026.

If you’re busy driving down the highway to hell on the weekend of February 14th and 15th don’t be afraid to take the exit towards the Airlie Beach Hotel for some high voltage rock n roll.
Whole Lotta Rosie are one of Australia’s premiere AC/DC tribute bans, packing a heavy rock n roll punch for all to enjoy.
Whole Lotta Rosie initially formed as a supergroup of veteran musicians, all with experience playing AC/DC tunes. Having played for close to 10 years, it’s been a long way to the top, but the electric ensemble shows no signs of slowing down.
“The band have a great ear for that authentic AC/DC sound, they’re all big fans to begin with and know their gear, so when you come to a Whole Lotta Rosie gig, hearing that genuine AC/DC rock sound”, said singer Cynthia Gallie.
The band has built a strong foundation in Melbourne, developing a dedicated fanbase through consistent performances.
“We have an awesome loyal following in Melbourne who are super passionate about the music.”
Having played in Airlie before, the band are incredibly eager to return.
“A couple of years ago we were lucky enough to have a weekend of gigs at Airlie Beach Hotel and absolutely loved it. We’re all looking forward to bringing the band back for round 2!”
Despite covering a huge discography, the group are able to balance great hits with epic deep cuts.
“We try to strike a balance between delivering the well-known favourites and satisfying the more dedicated and well-versed fans with those album deep cuts.”
Cynthia clearly has some impressive chops, belting the iconic songs of both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson.
“Bon has a lot of great songs that highlight how good he was as a storyteller. These are my favourite to perform. Songs like Ride On and Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer. Then you have Brian with his incredible range so sinking my teeth into songs like Shoot To Thrill and Hells Bells is a great challenging and is very satisfying”.
