The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Cold Chisel tribute act main singer Andy Lutze has been performing this Cold Chisel act for 24 years.

Initially, he planned to do the show for just a few years but when it became a huge hit, he decided to continue.
Drawing inspiration from the real band, Andy combined the show with a Midnight Oil tribute and together created this masterful double feature.
The real Midnight Oil used to be an opening act for Cold Chisel in the 80’s, so these two tributes thought nothing would be better than combining their tribute acts.
The two perform one after another and play hit after hit.

Māori man Josiah has always loved music.
Music is a big part in the Māori culture and growing up around that, Josiah developed an interest at an early age.
Despite having his first gig at 16, Josiah never imagined music would be his full-time career, but fast forward to today, and it is.
It’s been seven years since Josiah became a full-time musician and he has never looked back.
He has been hitting stages around Airlie Beach and displaying his talent.
Josiah said he primarily plays reggae, Motown and soul but also joked that when he plays pop and singalong anthems, he does it to entertain the girls.
For the past three months Josiah has had Casey Donnellan as his manager and he says he’s extremely thankful for her care and support.
Although Josiah’s career is in music, he likes to keep busy during the day, and he does the occasional day job, heading out the water or looking after accommodation.

Whitsunday Regional Council is showing support for the local arts scene by sponsoring the main prize at the upcoming Great Barrier Reef Festival Art Exhibition.
They have contributed $3000 to the prize pool, affirming their commitment to fostering local artistic talent.
Mayor Collins expressed Council’s dedication to promoting a thriving arts culture in the Whitsunday region.
“It’s important we support opportunities for artists to showcase their creations and connect with local audiences,” he said.
"It not only benefits our local artists but contributes to the cultural experiences available for our community."
The organisers from Creative Connections Whitsunday Inc have welcomed Council's sponsorship, which contributed to raising the total prize money to over $8000.
Glenda Brown, Exhibition Coordinator, emphasised that art prizes play a crucial role in providing artists with exposure and opportunities for artwork sales, and a unique cultural event for locals and visitors.
To add to the event's prestige, the winning artwork will be added to the Council's curated collection.
Panellists Sandy Guy and Bonney Bombach, along with a Council member, will help with the preselection process.
Deadline for entry is 30 June 30 2024 and all artists are invited to enter.
The exhibition is due to be held at the Whitsunday Sailing Club from August 1-5, 2024. The event will display a variety of 2D and 3D artworks and photographs, and attendees can participate in the 'People's Choice' Award by voting for their favourite artwork.

James Reyne from Australian Crawl is coming to town!
With him he brings his amazing band and they’ll be performing all of the classic Australian Crawl hits, that’ll have you belting out the lyrics.
From Reckless to The Boys Light up, Hammerhead and Fall of Rome – there are too many iconic tunes to list here – you’ll have to go and see the performance instead!
James and his band have been performing this tour since January of this year and so far, every show has been sold out and has rocked out.
He’s extremely eager to get to the Whitsundays and says the small rural towns do not lack in support.
James said he feeds off the crowd to enhance his performance and take it to the next level.
“It’s a two-way thing, the psychology of show business is someone on stage, pushing energy out, and energy’s coming back,” he added.
Performing for such a long time, James said he is only improving with time, and during his career he has learned valuable information about show business, song writing and personal relations.
“Being in a band it means you get to experience things that people would normally experience but you get to experience them in a really intense few years,” he said.
“You get all these life experiences, and you have to learn these life lessons quite quickly and intently about human nature and how people are, how people relate to you, how you relate to them and the world.”
It’s not just life lessons James has learned throughout his career; he understands the muse and what to do if he encounters a blank with his song writing.
“I recognise that it’s not a hard time, it’s natural part of life,” James said.
“It’s the natural ebb and flow of creative consciousness and when you do that, you serve the music, you're calling it earlier, you sit down, and you work at your craft, you start working and you start thinking.
“You start tinkering with an idea you might have had three weeks ago or an idea you might have had yesterday or two lines you might have written down six months ago and things start to happen.
“I learned to not worry about that [getting a blank in songwriting], let it slide and the so-called muse will revisit you.”
James is bringing all his expertise and experience to Magnums Hotel in Airlie Beach this June, for one night with this incredible music legend.
Alongside all the Australian Crawl hits, you can expect to hear all the song you know and love for 90 minutes of rock and roll classics.

The North Queensland Battle Of The Young Bands and Young Whitsundays Got Talent are two very special events which invite our region’s youth to showcase their musical abilities, giving them an opportunity to play live in front of big crowds.
If you’re in a local band or a solo musician this is your chance!
First-up is North Queensland Battle Of The Young Bands competition and the winner receives $1000 in prize money and a gig at Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill.
Open for young people of all ages, there are three age categories, 5-12, 13-17 and 18-21, anyone can enter!
Every registered band will perform two songs in a heat and winners of each heat will perform another song in the Grand Final.
Additionally, the event will be live streamed on Facebook, and appear on Whitsundays Got Talent’s YouTube page.
To enter, your band must have three or more band members.

St Catherine's Catholic College celebrated its annual Under Eights Day last Friday, bringing together over 200 students from kindergarten to Year 2, students from St Mary's Catholic School travelled from Bowen to also enjoy the day’s fun activities.
St Mary’s Catholic School in Bowen is hosting its Family Fun Day this weekend and the whole community are invited to come along to what is expected to be an entertaining day out.
There will be free wildlife encounters with Wildlife Whitsundays, and a variety of carnival rides for all ages including a chair-o-plane, inflatable obstacle course, climbing wall, super slide, mini-Jeeps and a Disney-themed jumping castle.
Several local organisations will also be present on the day, providing different types of entertainment and activities for all to enjoy.
With Emergency Service vehicles on display, a children's cake decorating competition and a Pony Poo competition – there will be plenty to do!
In addition, there will be a wide variety of stalls serving delicious food.
School Principal, Mrs Alicia Ninnes, said the school's Parents and Friends Association have been working tirelessly for the last few months to prepare for the biannual event.
"The Family Fun Day is going to be a fantastic opportunity to open our doors to the wider community, and to showcase the hard work and dedication of our parents, staff and students,” she expressed.
“It's going to be a lot of fun, with so many rides, stalls and entertainment on offer, and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone on Saturday!"

Mackay audiences will be treated to an inspiring production The Peasant Prince this June as part of the DBCT Kids’ Theatre Season.
Based on the incredible story of Mao’s Last Dancer, the autobiography of Li Cunxin and a major motion picture, the play is aimed at audiences aged seven to twelve years of age.
Following the successful performances of Possum Magic and Edward the Emu, the award-winning theatre company Monkey Baa is thrilled to bring the production The Peasant Prince to Mackay, presenting three performances in the MECC Plenary Halls.
Following the international success of Li Cunxin’s iconic autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer, the children’s version (The Peasant Prince) won the Australian Publishers Association’s Book of the Year for Younger Children and Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards Children’s Book Award.
Now adapted for stage by Monkey Baa Theatre, this is the remarkable true story of a 10-year-old peasant boy’s journey from impoverished rural China to the international dance scene.
The play begins as a young Li Cunxin who is taken from his small rural village in Northern China to study at an elite dance academy in Beijing.
Although the training is gruelling, he is inspired by dreams of a better life for both him and his family.
When a famous ballet master from the USA visits the academy, his life is changed forever.
"It’s always my hope that my life experiences inspire young people to follow their dreams and to take advantage of the boundless opportunities in their lives,” said Li.
“I think my story proves that with hard work, dedication and determination, anything is possible. You can be successful in anything, if you are willing to go that extra mile."

The first performance will take place on Monday 10 June at 6pm, followed by two performances on Tuesday 11 June at 9:30am and 12:30pm.
The 12.30pm show is a relaxed performance, targeted to anyone who would benefit from a calmer environment. During this session, there is a relaxed attitude to noise, doors remain open and lights are dimmed to create a comfortable atmosphere for all attendees.
With tickets at $18.50, the MECC highly encourages parents to book their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

The last thing Ben De Luca from Bowen Summergarden Cinema expected was a phone call from an Australian film icon, but that’s exactly what happened.
Wolf Creek star, John Jarratt, phoned Ben, and asked him if he could host a Meet and Greet, preview his new film, and host a Q&A at Ben’s famous little cinema in Bowen.
John Jarratt loves independent cinemas, he says they sell Australian productions with more gusto than the big cinema chains.
Being a country boy himself, John knows how exciting it can be for people to meet “the Wolf Creek guy”.
Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy said having actor and director John Jarratt visit the town was very exciting.
“A lot of locals and visitors went to the meet and greet at Bowen Summergarden Cinema to meet John and he also called in at the Big Mango to say hello to the team,” Leanne said.
John wrote, produced, directed, and starred in his new film ‘What About Sal’ and he is hosting meet and greets, Q&A’s and showings in cinemas all over Australia.
‘What About Sal’ follows the story of a man with down syndrome who is losing his mother and then has to find his father.
This film has a wonderful message and John Jarratt said people with down syndrome can be much more intelligent than us.
“The main message of the film is that down syndrome people are important and they’re wonderful contributors to our societies,” he said.
“They’re emotionally more intelligent than we’ll ever be and they are capable of unconditional love, they’re quite extraordinary people.”
The film has a great cast, in the main role is Gerard Odwyer, who won Best Actor in the past.
John has heard nothing but praise about the film and says people stick around after the showings.
“No one has come up to me and said they don't like it, everyone loves it and we can't get rid of people after the show and that's always a good sign!” he added.
John tells audiences to bring tissues to their viewing but he also said there’s funny moments too.
John wants you to see this film, for your own viewing pleasure and to support Australian cinema.
“We’ve got the best actors in the world, some of the best directors but at the moment they’re not getting a fair go because there’s so many big Hollywood blockbusters flooding the market,” John said.

91 operators within The Whitsundays have been recognised as Best of Queensland Experiences (BOQEs) for their dedication to bringing the Queensland story to life and consistently delivering an exceptional customer experience, ensuring visitors to the region have unforgettable experiences.
The program, launched in 2018, is the first of its kind in Australia and aims to elevate Queensland as the top holiday destination by identifying and recognising tourism products that consistently exceed expectations.
Over 2,000 experiences across the state have earned this title.
Developed with industry partners, the program uses independent criteria to assess operators.
These include positive customer reviews, secure online bookings, active social media presence and industry accreditation.
To be recognised, businesses must achieve a high score across these categories.
Earning a BOQE status allows operators to display an official stamp, making it easier for travellers to identify these top-rated experiences.
"A BOQE certification empowers our Whitsundays' operators," says Rick Hamilton, CEO of Tourism Whitsundays. "It equips them to deliver exceptional experiences, making every visitor feel like a VIP."

The 2024 theme for the Cruise Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef Festival has been announced and people across the region are already getting excited about the Above and Below theme that is set to highlight our beautiful region once again.
This month, Cruise Whitsundays also confirmed their naming rights sponsorship for the event once again, their involvement bringing some exciting environmentally focused boat tours which will become one of the feature events during the festival.
Renowned for being one of the most family-friendly community events of the year, the award-winning Great Barrier Reef Festival has been a cornerstone of the annual events calendar for almost 25 years.
Highlights include the Coral Sea Marina Lantern Parade which sees the boardwalk come alive with beautifully decorated lanterns and the Airlie Beach Rotary Club Street Parade where businesses and community groups decorate their own floats.
There is also the Recyclable Regatta, Magic Mile, Family Fun Day and a crowd favourite – the Sebel Whitsundays Fireworks on the Foreshore where thousands of people gather on the beach to watch the night sky fill with colour.
As the evenings unfold, the main-stage heats up with both local talent and a top-secret headlining act who is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The beach-side pop-up bar is always buzzing, and families can enjoy the Side Show Alley and Carnival Rides throughout the evenings.
This year, the environmental theme runs throughout, both within events that incorporate recycled materials, but also through different educational opportunities that inspire and inform.
As part of the initiative, attendees have the opportunity to enjoy a Reef Experience with Master Reef Guides, an immersive day on the Great Barrier Reef learning and listening from the undisputed masters of the Reef.
In addition, the Above and Below Art Exhibition will be hosted by the Whitsunday Sailing Club this year and also the Immerse Arts Installation will be a focal point to the festival heart, with the stunning lighting animations and artworks at Fairy Tree Park.
This year there will be some new additions to the festival line-up, these include a special Cocktails on the Point event at the Whitsunday Sailing Club and the Whitsunday Life Newspaper Window Dressing Competition where main street business stand to win $1000 worth of advertising for the best dressed shop front.

Avid fashionistas from across the region are busy creating fabulous designs ahead of the 2024 Wilmar Sugar and Renewables Wearable Arts Parade which is due to take place in August as one of the central events hosted by the Great Barrier Reef Festival.
To ignite further creative flair, there will be a special workshop at Whitsunday Sailing Club next month.
This will be an opportunity for participants to learn from some of the best artists of this kind in the region.
Hosted by Creative Connections Whitsunday, the hands-on workshops will be led by the visionary talents of Christina Papadimitriou and Bernadette Russell from Wearable Art Creatives.
These inspiring artists will offer first-hand knowledge of the craft and attendees will learn how to create a masterpiece during the session.
A popular event, which is a regular stable at the Great Barrier Reef Festival, Wearable Arts has captured the passion of the community, so much so that St Catherine’s Catholic College have added it into their curriculum for Year 9 and 10 students.
Teacher, Skye Carroll, commented that the students have been having a lot of fun with their creations.
"I have both classes hyped up for competing in the Wearable Art for the Great Barrier Reef Festival,” she expressed.
“Many of them are already showing competitive streaks – I can't wait to see their final products as they emerge!"
Chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Festival, Margie Murphy, said the event is promising to be a mesmerising display of imaginative designs that blur the lines between fashion and art.
“We are thrilled to bring the Wearable Art Parade and Competition back to Airlie Beach for another year of creativity and inspiration!” she said.
The event will kick-off with the Wearable Arts Parade on Saturday 3rd August and will culminate in the competition where guest judges will evaluate the entries and select winners across various categories.
These categories include Best Individual Design, Best Team Design, Great Barrier Reef Festival Theme design and Best Accessories.
With fierce competition and extraordinary talent on display, anticipation runs high as participants vie for recognition and accolades.

The bucket-list item on many a locals’ list, the annual St. Bebida White on Whitehaven by Fish D’vine Catering is the only long lunch of its kind open to the public on Whitehaven Beach.
This extravagant, decadent and opulent affair invites guests to indulge in a full day on Whitehaven Beach, where you are whisked away to a paradise, that is just a short distance from your home.
