The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Contributed with thanks to PCYC Queensland’s First Nations State Partnerships Manager Michael Cedar 1-4 - Spirits were high as Mackay’s young dancing stars took to the stage. Photos supplied.

Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Xavier Rudd, Mental as Anything, The Whitlams and more on first lineup announcement for November 2026 The call is out for fans of Xavier Rudd to ‘Follow the Sun’ to the 2026 Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 6-8. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. Having visited Airlie Beach briefly on previous Australian tours, Rudd is already familiar with the region’s scenic beauty, but this will be his first time playing its signature event, dubbed a ‘party in paradise’ and the ‘ultimate music holiday’. “From the photos I’ve seen, the festival setting is amazing,” he said. “My music is definitely a celebration of our natural world, so a place like Airlie feels especially aligned with songs like ‘Follow the Sun’. “These are the kinds of shows I love, and hopefully, weather permitting, we can actually pull down the tent and play under the stars!” Equally as famous for his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism as he is for his extraordinary gifts as a musician, the significance of playing at a destination known as the ‘Heart of the Great Barrier Reef’ isn’t lost on Rudd. “I’ve been lucky to witness some of the good work that people are doing in the world of reef regeneration and that’s inspiring,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue down that path.” Also urging festivalgoers to ‘Live it Up’ in Airlie Beach is beloved Australian band Mental As Anything, whose performance will form part of a historic 50th anniversary tour, comprising a limited number of exclusive festival appearances and select metropolitan headline shows. Original member and iconic pop artist, Reg Mombassa, is promising fans a rare and unforgettable opportunity to experience the band’s timeless hits live once more, and celebrate their unique blend of songwriting, artistry, and performance flair. “We’re known for being a party band, so the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is a perfect fit,” he said. In total agreeance that there’s ‘No Aphrodisiac’ quite like it are The Whitlams, whose frontman Tim Freedman says the band is thrilled to be one of the festival’s headliners for 2026. “I’ve been wanting to return to the Whitsundays for decades and now we have the chance,” he said, adding: “it’s a great line-up, music lifts the soul, and we rock!” Other additions to the first line-up release include The Radiators, Adam Harvey, 19-Twenty, Skinny Living (UK), Little Quirks, The Mason Rack Band, The Wayward Suns, Loonaloop, Salt & Steel and the Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s 2025 Passport to Airlie competition winners Monroe. Tickets are on sale now at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au costing $325 for a three-day pass, or $1100 for a VIP package, both including entry to the opening and after parties that bookend the main event. On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Packed with a diverse range of engaging events, the festival promises to be a hot bed of inspiration, bridging the gap between writers and readers, fostering a sense of camaraderie among literary enthusiasts.
Festival Chair, Karen Jacobsen said she is thrilled to see the festival outline come together so everyone can start getting excited about the event.

“All of us involved in bringing the writers festival back in 2024 are overjoyed to be announcing the dates, for an event that will showcase our region.
“We expect it to delight readers and locals and the countdown is on!"
Commencing with an enchanting supper club-styled event entitled "A Love Letter to Queensland”, the Thursday night will set the tone for what’s to come, enthralling and enlivening the audience with spirited tales and heartfelt memories.
Featuring passionate Queenslanders, this event will give attendees a unique opportunity to connect with the soul of Queensland.
Another introduction to the newly revitalised festival itinerary is the inaugural Whitsundays Literary Heart Awards, set to be a highlight of the weekend.
Launching in February 2024, these awards will culminate in a glamorous Festival event on the Saturday evening.
With various categories including poetry, short stories by adults and under 18-year-olds, and published book covers, the awards aim to recognise and celebrate the diverse talents within the literary world.
In honour of the Festival's founder, Gloria Burley, a distinguished award will be presented for the best unpublished manuscript. The Gloria Burley award comes with a prize of $2,000, acknowledging Gloria's remarkable contribution to bringing the Festival to the Whitsundays and commemorating her legacy.
Another highlight of the event is the Kids Day Out on Sunday morning, which aims to instil the love of reading and writing in the young hearts of our community.
Workshops on writing for children and young adults will also be available, nurturing the next generation of talent.
Festival Co-convenor, Richard Evans, says the festival program has been crafted to include a rich tapestry of writing genres.

“Let's come together and celebrate the magic of words, the art of writing, and the joy of reading.

A petting zoo, free sausage sizzle, four face painters, glitter tattoos and three jumping castles will ensure this year’s Party in the Park will keep young families entertained.
The party will be at Queens Park (oval 1) on Wednesday, September 6, from 9am to 11.30am.
Mayor Greg Williamson said the free morning would showcase the tremendous children’s services and organisations Mackay had to offer for children aged up to six.
“This fantastic event is an initiative of council’s Community Programs team and the Mackay Family Support Alliance that aims to celebrate and raise awareness of Child Protection Week each year,” Mayor Williamson said.
“Dozens of service providers have stalls at the event and they run fun interactive activities and displays,” he said.
“It makes for a really fun morning out and is a great way for young families to network, socialise and find out what support is available to them.
“I’d encourage everyone with young children, including carers and grandparents, to bring them along – grab a free sausage from Mackay Rotary, get their faces painted and have some fun.”
Mackay Family Support Alliance Community Connect Program Worker Christie Pearson said it was important to promote Child Protection Week.
“The theme of Child Protection Week, which runs from September 3 to 9, is ‘protecting children is everybody’s business’,” Ms Pearson said.
“Events like this are an opportunity to promote the value of children and highlight services and networks that support parents through what can be a very stressful time of life,” she said.
“There’s an old saying that raising a child takes a village, and events like this are a great way for new parents to make connections and find networks that become that village.”

Classical music lovers are thrilled to hear the Australian Chamber Orchestra is returning to Mackay this September, alongside Australia’s most talented emerging string players. Led by renowned British violinist, Matthew Truscott, a frequent performer on the world’s most celebrated concert hall stages, the performance Ecstatic Dances will include music from Stravinsky’s iconic ballet Petrushka, and Bartok’s Divertimento for string orchestra.
The 17-piece string ensemble brings together musicians of the ACO with Australia’s most talented young professional string players to create a high-energy string orchestra.
Manager MECC and Events, Andrew Bobeldyk said Mackay’s appreciation of classical music transcends across many age groups.
“The last time the MECC had classical music on stage, we had six individual schools come along to watch. We’re finding instrumental students appreciate the dedication it takes for these musicians to create such an impressive symphony.”
Recent data trends reveal it’s not just instrumental students who are listening in to the likes of Stravinsky, Mozart and Beethoven. Millennials and Gen Z are using streaming services such as Spotify to listen in, and now make up a third of the genre’s listeners.
“Listening to classical music can help one relax and maintain a sense of calm. Quite a few students use classical music playlists to help them focus during study,” Mr Bobeldyk said.
Director of Ecstatic Dances, Matthew Truscott, is delighted to collaborate with ACO Collective and perform a stunning selection of classical music from across the world and centuries.
“We are excited to present music with energy and drive, the irresistible pulse of the dance,” Matthew Truscott said.
The performance will showcase pieces from world renowned composers, including Purcell, Stravinsky, Holly Harrison, Ross Edwards, and Bartok Divertimento.
“From the exoticism and sensuality of Purcell’s England to the thrill-seeking dynamism of Australian composer Holly Harrison’s Black Ice, commissioned especially for ACO Collective, the program showcases the vitality and virtuosity of the ensemble,” Truscott said.

This Sunday (September 3), from 1pm to 4pm, about 35 vibrant artisans, musicians and food vendors will bring the Mackay Civic Precinct to life.
Showcasing everything hand-made, from paintings and platters to toys, totes and textiles, the Rock Paper Scissors Art and Design Market attracts an eclectic mix of talented stallholders.
This event is also not just about shopping for art, you can also make your own – the “craft yurt” will be back again this year with free all-ages craft activities. Visitors can make a gorgeous colourful woven bird or a fun recycled paper slinky.
Add in live entertainment and onsite food and coffee vendors and you have an awesome afternoon outing for anyone with an interest in hand-crafted creations.
Mayor Greg Williamson said Rock Paper Scissors had broad community appeal.
“It’s a great afternoon out, where you can relax on the lawn beside Artspace and enjoy some food, coffee and live music from Kane Dodd, Jezzie and Jack Oliveira,” Mayor Williamson said.
“Or, if you are a bit of a treasure hunter after something original, then you would struggle to find a larger mix of talented creators in one place,” he said.
The Mayor said savvy shoppers often used Rock Paper Scissors as a chance to get a head start on their Christmas shopping, because it was a great way to find thoughtful gifts that were one-of-a-kind.
“This event is a tremendous showcase of local talent, and I would really encourage everyone to come out and support our local artisan community,” he said.
Rock Paper Scissors is curated by the team at Artspace Mackay and director Tracey Heathwood said this year’s applicant pool had been exceptional.
“There’s such a fantastic range of artisans and creators this year, and this market has definitely grown over the years,” Ms Heathwood said.
Ms Heathwood said there was also plenty happening inside Artspace Mackay during the afternoon.
“We have three exciting exhibitions to enjoy in our gallery spaces, including Zanny Begg: These Stories Will be Different, Kara Day: Ladylike and Stephen Homewood: Turbulence,” she said.
Foodspace will also be opening for the Rock, Paper, Scissors event, with its usual menu.

The weather was perfect for SCOUT FEST 2023 at Rowallan Park on August 19 and 20. On Saturday, there were 203 public participants and 258 Scouting members, along with six Guiding youth and three leaders who joined the activities.
Leaders and youth members from Calliope and Tannum Sands enjoyed the weekend, along with youth and leaders from Proserpine, Sarina, Mackay City Central, and Banksia Groups. Visiting leaders from Brisbane, Townsville, and Yeppoon were also present, and their expertise was appreciated in running activities.
SCOUT FEST occurs biennially, providing youth the chance to experience various adventurous activities during a single weekend camp, which is different from a group camp where only one or two activities might be available.
Region Commissioner Mr. Dougal McWhinney and Hibiscus Coast District Commissioner Ms. Katrina Hoare were pleased with the turnout. They acknowledged the help from leaders, parents, supporters, the Rowallan Park Committee, and the Fellowship Team. Thanks to the Rowallan Park works team, the grounds were safe for all attendees.
Mayor Greg Williamson and Councillors Karen May and Fran Mann attended the opening parade and toured Rowallan Park's facilities. Mayor Williamson expressed gratitude to Scouting for providing facilities and opportunities to the youth of Mackay and District.
Special acknowledgment went to the District Adventurous Activities Team, experts in abseiling, water activities, archery, low ropes courses, and bouldering. The weekend featured additional activities like mud runs, popcorn making, damper twists, wood burning with magnifying glass using the sun, Bunnings craft, giant games, geocaching, rafting on the small dam, canoeing on the larger dam, mud runs, mountain bike riding, rope bridge challenges, crate stacking, and the merry-go-round. A memorabilia display was also part of the event.
A parade was held for presentations, followed by a delightful barbecue tea and celebration cake. Evening activities included disco dancing to favourites like the Macarena and Nutbush, a jumping castle for younger attendees, and horizontal bungee for the older youth members.
Activities for Scouting members continued on Sunday.
Congratulations to DC Katrina and her SCOUT FEST organising committee for creating a remarkable event for Scouting Youth and the public to enjoy.

Bell Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
Tuesday, 7:30pm
Viola is shipwrecked and believes her twin Sebastian lost to the ocean. Washed up in a strange new land, determined to survive, Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario and finds work with Duke Orsino, only to fall head over heels in love with him. But Orsino is in love with Olivia, who – grieving for her brother – refuses all offers of romance. Until, that is, she meets Cesario for the first time. A whirlwind of passion ensues, leaving no one unaffected, not even Olivia’s prudish housekeeper Malvolia, played by Jane Montgomery Griffiths (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Heather Fairbairn’s fresh retelling of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy is a dark collision of hidden identities and unrequited love. Featuring all-new music by Sarah Blasko, Twelfth Night ultimately asks us to find light in the darkness.

The superstars continue taking centre-stage at the Airlie Beach Hotel, with the one and only Louie Lee Feltrin, also known as one of the best and most authentic Robbie Williams tribute performances.
And in an exciting event, the Airlie Beach Hotel is setting us up for a Friday night of fantastic entertainment, with a special evening show.
Louie has been perfecting his craft for years, stepping off the back of an unlikely start with the 2005 Channel 9 hit show ‘Starstruck’, a show dedicated to celebrity lookalikes who are transformed into the original singer and perform tributes to a panel of judges.
Now almost 20 years on, Louie has continued to follow Robbie’s path to stardom.
“It’s just steamrolled. I didn’t think I looked like Robbie, but I thought ‘I’ll give it a go’ and now here I am!” Louie explained.
In fact, it could be said that Louie is a bit too committed to the show.
“More like over committed,” he said.
“I work on it a lot, and even my tattoos are very similar. I used to get them painted on, but that was costing too much, so I just got very similar tattoos done.”
No stranger to the Airlie Beach scene, Louie is hoping for a huge crowd to rock out the best tunes of Robbie.
The Airlie Beach Hotel will be running rampant, with us having ‘No Regrets’, singing along to the best tunes and Louie’s smooth vocals.
And he doesn’t shy away from the tribute scene:
“The more you drink, the more I look like the real Robbie!”
While Robbie is quite tall and handsome, and Louie is self-reportedly not, the Robbie Williams experience is one for everyone, with the tunes and lights sure to convince you that the real Robbie Williams in performing on stage.
“It’s all the hits, to make a fun night. We make sure our show is just like if you were to see Robbie Williams live. He makes the show an experience, and so do we.
“We want people to walk away wondering if they actually just saw Robbie Williams performing or if it was just me.”
The audience will be taken on a journey, with ‘Angels’ to be the biggest highlight of the evening.
And don’t worry superfans, ‘Angels’ is permenantly on the set list, because “If I don’t play it, I get bashed.”
This is one show to check out at the Airlie Beach Hotel this September.
