Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Contributed with thanks to PCYC Queensland’s First Nations State Partnerships Manager Michael Cedar 1-4 - Spirits were high as Mackay’s young dancing stars took to the stage. Photos supplied.

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Xavier Rudd, Mental as Anything, The Whitlams and more on first lineup announcement for November 2026 The call is out for fans of Xavier Rudd to ‘Follow the Sun’ to the 2026 Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 6-8. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. Having visited Airlie Beach briefly on previous Australian tours, Rudd is already familiar with the region’s scenic beauty, but this will be his first time playing its signature event, dubbed a ‘party in paradise’ and the ‘ultimate music holiday’. “From the photos I’ve seen, the festival setting is amazing,” he said. “My music is definitely a celebration of our natural world, so a place like Airlie feels especially aligned with songs like ‘Follow the Sun’. “These are the kinds of shows I love, and hopefully, weather permitting, we can actually pull down the tent and play under the stars!” Equally as famous for his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism as he is for his extraordinary gifts as a musician, the significance of playing at a destination known as the ‘Heart of the Great Barrier Reef’ isn’t lost on Rudd. “I’ve been lucky to witness some of the good work that people are doing in the world of reef regeneration and that’s inspiring,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue down that path.” Also urging festivalgoers to ‘Live it Up’ in Airlie Beach is beloved Australian band Mental As Anything, whose performance will form part of a historic 50th anniversary tour, comprising a limited number of exclusive festival appearances and select metropolitan headline shows. Original member and iconic pop artist, Reg Mombassa, is promising fans a rare and unforgettable opportunity to experience the band’s timeless hits live once more, and celebrate their unique blend of songwriting, artistry, and performance flair. “We’re known for being a party band, so the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is a perfect fit,” he said. In total agreeance that there’s ‘No Aphrodisiac’ quite like it are The Whitlams, whose frontman Tim Freedman says the band is thrilled to be one of the festival’s headliners for 2026. “I’ve been wanting to return to the Whitsundays for decades and now we have the chance,” he said, adding: “it’s a great line-up, music lifts the soul, and we rock!” Other additions to the first line-up release include The Radiators, Adam Harvey, 19-Twenty, Skinny Living (UK), Little Quirks, The Mason Rack Band, The Wayward Suns, Loonaloop, Salt & Steel and the Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s 2025 Passport to Airlie competition winners Monroe. Tickets are on sale now at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au costing $325 for a three-day pass, or $1100 for a VIP package, both including entry to the opening and after parties that bookend the main event. From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Vika And Linda Join Songwriter Festival Line Up

August 24, 2023

Joining the likes of Toni Childs and Mark Sholtez, the iconic duo Vika and Linda OAM will be a part of the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival and Residency.

Participating in the Songwriter Residential Retreat at the end of August, Vika and Linda will partner with other artists to create new and exciting music, across all genres.

For the past three decades, the pair have made and performed their music across the world, creating three albums with The Black Sorrows, as well as their own eight studio albums, two live albums and an anthology.

They have performed alongside Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers, and John Farnham, and have been nominated for six ARIA awards.

In 2022, Vika and Linda were presented with the Medal of the Order of Australia for their service to the performing arts, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

“When you set out to be a singer, you sing because you love it, it’s your passion,” Linda said.

“But when you’re recognised by your country for it, for your service to it, that’s a whole other level.”

The duo will perform some of their new music at the Festival’s Concert and Conversation event, held at Paradiso on September 2, with other famous headliners, including Karen Jacobsen, and Francesca de Valence.

This will be a unique opportunity for fans to view an intimate performance from these artists and hear their stories.

They will also act as mentors for aspiring singer-songwriters in the Emerging Songwriter Workshops during the festival.

Movie Review: John Farnham: Finding the Voice

August 24, 2023

Sweeping the audience through the entirety of his life, this beautiful and poignant biography of John Farnham’s musical career does not miss a beat, speaking to each rise and fall of this Aussie legend’s career.

Beginning in the early days, audiences see a fresh baby-faced 18-year-old John, in 1967, just as he released ‘Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)’.

With humble beginnings as a plumber’s apprentice, the sudden success of ‘Sadie’ saw John go to stardom quickly, typecast as the Aussie heartthrob of the time.

This turned sour quickly, when he travelled to London looking for a recording contract but was rejected because the labels said they already had their teen idol and didn’t need another one.

Coming back to Australia, he retreated away from the scene, and by the 70s, John was in the wrong crowd, favouring party drugs and reduced to singing in musicals.

In 1973, he married Jill Billman, who he met on the set of musical Charlie Girl.

This is where he met Glenn Wheatley, who was the bassist for Masters’ Apprentice and set on bringing the icon of John Farnham back to life.

Securing John as lead singer of Little River Band, John was pushed back into stardom.

In a massive turn of events, 1986 saw the release of ‘Whispering Jack’, John’s solo studio album, which Glenn put his house as collateral against, much to the chagrin of his wife, Gaynor Wheatley.

Only discovering his famous track ‘You’re The Voice’ close to the end of the recording of the album, John and his musicians recorded the song without permission from the song writers.

Once the track hit radio waves, it was an instant success, and ‘Whispering Jack’ went sky high.

Created using almost entirely old images and footage, as well as interviews with friends and family, this biography is touching and intimate, but void of the legend himself.

John does not contribute any new stories to the film itself, with interviews often referring to him in the past tense.

Despite this, it is a touching tribute to the legend, who is now battling cancer, and to Glenn, who revitalised John’s career but sadly passed away in 2022 due to COVID complications.

John Farnham: Finding the Voice will be released at Bowen Cinema Saturday August 12.

Aussie Icon John Farnham’s career is beautifully explored using images, footage, and touching interviews

Let’s Race!

August 24, 2023

The 35th Airlie Beach Race Week is full steam ahead, with over 163 registrations this year and 152 yachts expected to jostle for best position in the mass-start event this Friday morning.

“It’s all happening down at the Sailing Club,” said Race Week Manager, Ross Chisholm.

“This week so many boats have been sailing up the coast or travelling by road and the Sailing Club is a hive of activity!

“Spectators can see the start from anywhere on the shoreline and, as soon as the gun goes off, they with be heading north to Double Cone, hopefully under spinnaker.”

Previously Airlie Beach Race Week would see around 120 yachts competing but for the past few years they have been consistently above 150, a record that organisers are proud to achieve.

While the competition and the camaraderie are centred around the 16 different divisions participating in the event, the lively social evenings and jovial nautical culture offer something for everyone in the community.

“The Festival Village on the Sailing Club Lawn will have live music and a host of food stalls every evening aside from lay day,” said Whitsunday Sailing Club Manager, Robin Ross.

“The 20 Degrees South Bar and Restaurant is also open all week.

“We are really looking forward to seeing everyone enjoy Race Week this year and would love all the locals to come on down and take part in all the fun!”

Welcome From Ross Chisholm, Race Director

August 24, 2023

Another warm welcome to competitors, officials, volunteers and supporters of Airlie Beach Race Week. Now in its 35th consecutive year, the event continues to grow, with last year’s event reaching record entries.

Following that up with over 150 entries this year indicates the popularity of the event. The added challenge this year was to find sufficient berthing for competitors, given that both local marinas were fully booked.

A lot of work has gone into sourcing every vacant berth in Airlie Beach, sourcing hard stand facilities for trailable boats, allocating moorings for some visitors.

A special thanks to our team of volunteers and staff who have put hours into this exercise, as well as our own club members who have had to vacate their own berths to accommodate visitors.

Once again, the on-water team will be working hard to ensure six days of fantastic racing around the waters and islands of the Whitsundays.

A fleet in excess of 140 boats makes for exciting sailing on the water and a great experience on shore. The fleet has been split into 17 divisions (another record) to ensure that similar boats are in direct competition.

As in recent years the regatta will start with the mass start race out to Double Cone Island. This has become a regatta tradition, and with the large fleet will provide a wonderful spectacle for competitors, spectators and media alike.

On shore, the festival village will be in full swing, with a similar layout to last year and more details provided within this feature.

We look forward to seeing you all on the water and at the social events ashore.

Born To Race!

August 24, 2023

Bowen teenager, Jack Scharf, is competing in his second Airlie Beach Race Week this year and if his winning streak continues, the boat he’s crewing on stands a good chance of winning.

The 16-year-old has been sailing since he was 10 and first discovered the sport when a friend invited him to a ‘Come and Try Day’ at Port Denison Sailing Club.

For Jack, it was love at first sight and he has been passionately pursuing every opportunity to sail ever since.

“I just love being out on the water and experiencing it all,” he said.

Jack started his career sailing Optimists, which are two-metre single-handed fibreglass boats, and he has since progressed to Laser 4.7s and Radials.

In 2018 he competed in three national championships held all over the country and he won first place for the Green Fleet that year.

In 2019 he won the intermediate nationals and in January this year he competed in the Radial Division, coming 4th in Oceania for the Under 17’s in the Silver Fleet.

“One day I would love to compete in the Sydney to Hobart,” said Jack.

“But right now, my sights are set on making the Gold Fleet at Nationals if I can.”

Swapping a solo sport for a team gig, Jack will be part of eight crew sailing on the Sydney 38 in the Performance Cruising Division at this year’s Race Week.

“I love them both equally,” said Jack.

“When I sail solo it is more ‘me’, I am in full control but when I am part of the crew, it is a bit like family, we build friendships, and it’s heaps of fun.”

Once he completes Airlie Beach Race Week, Jack will be setting off to Hamilton Island Race Week and although he’s missing two weeks of school, he says it will be a different kind of education.

When asked about inspiring other youngsters to try sailing, Jack says it’s important that everyone understands how easy it is to get involved.

“Just give it a crack!” he said.

“There are heaps of people out there looking for crew and all the owners are usually happy to take the young kids onboard to experience it.

“And of course – the more you ask the more you know!”

Weekender Showcases Isaac Region’s Rustic Beauty

August 24, 2023

The rustic sights of the Mackay Isaac region were on display as an episode of Channel 7’s Weekender, which was filmed in the region in June, aired on Sunday, July 30.

Mackay Isaac Tourism CEO Al Grundy led Weekender host Chris Parsons and his crew off the beaten track to prove there’s more to Mackay-Isaac than sugar and mining.

The episode opened at the St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, which took place in St Lawrence, south of Mackay, from June 23 to 25.

The weekend of food, gardening, craft and music attracts crowds from across the country, and will be sure to be on everyone’s calendar after watching the episode.

The crew then headed west to what Mr Parsons described as “possibly the best caravan park I’ve ever seen”, Lotus Creek.

Hitting the road again, the crew traversed along dirt tracks, over creeks and through sorghum fields towards Dysart, taking in the breathtaking scenes of the Peak Ranges on the way.

The next stop on the road trip was the picturesque Theresa Creek Dam, followed by the historic town of Clermont.

Showcasing the town’s gold, copper, timber and sheep history, the crew paid a visit to the Clermont Historical Centre to discover the story of Clermont.

Mr Parsons farewelled the Isaac with a helicopter ride over the region before heading back to Mackay Airport, stopping at the Nebo Hotel, Mount Britton and Eungella on the way.

When asked about the trip, Mr Parsons said it was “honestly unbelievable.”

“I’m always happy to go somewhere I’ve never been before, but this region, I’ve been really intrigued to come out here,” he said.

“I can’t say how impressed I’ve been with the trip and the people we’ve met along the way.”

Mackay Will Rock Despite Funding Setback

August 24, 2023

Organisers of Mackay's premier country music festival, NQ’s Rock'n Country Festival, rallied the community's support to prevent the event's cancellation after facing a funding setback. Geoff Baguley, the festival director, expressed disappointment over the federal government's failure to fulfill their promise of increased investment in the arts, which left the event with a significant funding shortfall.

"The federal government made the decision not to support our event despite the overwhelming economic and social benefits it brings to the Mackay region," said Geoff Baguley. "We would not have gone ahead this year if we knew the government was all talk and no substance."

However, despite the challenges, the festival refused to back down and sought support from the local community.

"Some major decisions have had to be made for this year's festival as we have not received the funding as promised," Geoff Baguley acknowledged. "BUT we have received incredible support from ticket holders and local businesses, so we are happy to announce that we are able to PROCEED!"

Thanks to the overwhelming community support, NQ’s Rock'n Country Festival will go ahead, albeit in a condensed two-day format on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 August. Although not the originally planned three-day extravaganza, the festival promises to be a jam-packed weekend full of incredible music and a rock'n atmosphere that Mackay's music enthusiasts look forward to.

Highlighting the positive aspects of this year's festival, Geoff Baguley emphasized the importance of the event for various stakeholders. "This is not the outcome we had planned for 2023, but it is better than the alternative of having to cancel completely as so many people are relying on this festival, including our artists, local businesses, staff, incredible stall and food vendors, and all of our suppliers!"

NQ’s Rock'n Country headliner, Morgan Evans, is still set to kick off his Australian tour right in Mackay, further adding to the excitement and anticipation for the event.

While the festival faced challenges, the spirit of the Mackay community prevailed, making it clear that the love for country music and support for local talent runs deep. Geoff Baguley acknowledged the local community's dedication, stating, "We have received terrific business sponsorship support from the local community but Canberra-based politicians have failed us."

TRIPLE GRAMMY WINNERS TO DELIVER HOPE WITH HARMONY

August 24, 2023

The three-time Grammy winning ensemble, Soweto Gospel Choir will take the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre’s (MECC) stage this August with harmonies and vocals that will leave audiences mesmerised.

Formed to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African Gospel music, Soweto Gospel Choir draws on the best talent from the many churches in and around Soweto, a township off the city of Johannesburg (South Africa).

Mackay audiences can expect songs and anthems from the Freedom movement of Nelson Mandela’s South Africa, and beautiful renditions of the protest music of the Civil Rights Movement, including works by legendary artists James Brown, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, and the one-and-only Aretha Franklin.

Manager of the MECC Andrew Bobeldyk said the MECC team were thrilled to welcome the choir to Mackay.

“The Soweto Gospel Choir have incredible stage presence. These artists have performed alongside some of the biggest names in music including Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, and Red Hot Chili Peppers,” he said.

“Their harmonies will leave you wanting more, this is African Gospel music at its very best,” he continued.

The choir is dedicated to sharing the joy of faith through music and has received critical acclaim and audience adoration for their powerful renditions of African American spirituals, gospel and folk music. The choir performed many times for the late Nelson Mandela, sadly including his state funeral in South Africa and at the subsequent commemorative service at Westminster Abbey in London.

The Soweto Gospel Choir is suited for all ages and interests, including community and school choir groups.

“I strongly encourage anyone who has also worked in or with a choir, to come along. I know you will appreciate the teamwork behind this performance,” Mr Bobeldyk commented.
