Creating a Greener Whitsundays

As part of National Tree Day, Whitsunday Regional Council sprang into action, planting around 350 native trees across the region to help make the Whitsundays a little greener.

The effort looks to give local areas more natural shade, better support local wildlife and add to the region’s natural beauty, with trees planted at Whitsunday Lakes, Darcy Munro Park in Collinsville, Bowen Cemetery, Proserpine Cemetery and selected road reserves.

“We’re lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia, and we want our parks and public spaces to be places our community is proud of and enjoys spending time in,” said Mayor Ry Collins.

“Our outdoor teams do a fantastic job every day keeping our parks, gardens and public spaces looking their best, and National Tree Day is another great example of that work.”

The project also aims to make the region’s parks and public spaces more enjoyable, inviting and accessible.

“Our parks and open spaces are there to be used and enjoyed,” Mayor Collins said.

“We want to see kids getting outside and playing, families spending time together, people walking the dog, exercising or just finding a shady spot to relax.”

“The more inviting we can make these spaces, the more people will use them, and planting more trees and creating natural shade is a simple but really important part of that.”
