Concerns over the spread of leucaena across Mackay and other parts of Central Queensland have prompted a Queensland Parliament petition calling for greater recognition and coordinated management of unmanaged and naturalised leucaena.
Sponsored by Member for Mirani Glen Kelly, the petition is calling for greater investment in surveillance, containment, control, research and community awareness, with more than 750 signatures gathered so far.
An error in last week’s printed edition stated the petition closed in September. The correct closing date is October 24, 2026. The petition is listed as 4670-26 Leucaena as a significant emerging environmental and biosecurity threat.
