On Tuesday 18th August Mackay marked six decades since the Battle of Long Tan, with Vietnam veterans, community members and respected local representatives gathering at Jubilee Park to honour those who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony featured a parade, the Australian and New Zealand national anthems, wreath-laying and a poppy tribute, providing an opportunity to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who served.
The ceremony also placed a focus on carrying the legacy of military service into the future, with a naval cadet commanding officer delivering the guest address and younger members of the Australian Defence Force encouraged to take part.
The gathering provided a poignant reminder of the experiences carried by Vietnam veterans and the importance of ensuring their service and sacrifice continue to be remembered by future generations.
Lest we forget
