Feathers will fly for Mackay audiences when Circa’s Duck Pond arrives to the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) on 6 May, reimagining Swan Lake as a contemporary circus spectacular. Directed by Yaron Lifschitz, the production is packed with Circa’s signature physicality and a bold, playful energy. Replacing classical ballet with aerials, acrobatics and tightly choreographed ensemble work, Duck Pond delivers spectacle with a wink. Cheeky visual moments - including a sequinned, flipper-wearing duck army and a burlesque Black Swan - bring humour and surprise to the stage. While the energy is high, the story remains central. Drawing on the familiar tale of swans and hapless princes, the production balances athletic performance with warmth and wit. "Grappling with a masterpiece like Swan Lake is terrifying. Everyone knows the Dance of the Cygnets and the 32 fouettés," says Circa Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz. "Our role is to bring them into circus and into the twenty-first century. Circus is nowhere near as precise or as refined as ballet. It tends to be shaggy, possibly more exciting, but definitely less elegant. We have to dance that line with as much grace as we can muster." said Lifschitz. Andrew Bobeldyk, Executive Manager of Major Venues, said the production offered something unique for Mackay audiences. “Ballet and circus perform exceptionally well in Mackay, and Circa’s distinctive approach makes this production even more special,” he said. “We’re proud to bring Duck Pond to Mackay and strongly encourage audiences to see Circa in action,” Bobeldyk said. Touching, funny and thoroughly entertaining, Duck Pond is ultimately a story about identity and finding your true self - offering Mackay audiences a fresh and unexpected take on a beloved classic. Duck Pond by Circa will perform one show only on 6 May. Tickets are on sale now. **BREAKOUT/HIGHLIGHT BOX FOR THE BELOW** The MECC and Circa present – Duck Pond Wednesday 6 May, 7.30pm MECC Auditorium Tickets: www.themecc.com.au

What began in 2016 as a local initiative with a clear purpose has developed into one of Mackay’s most established and impactful community fundraising events. The Key Solutions -M&P Services Annual Charity Golf Day was founded to support those in need across the region, and over the past decade it has become a consistent platform for business, community and charity to come together in a shared effort of giving. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $350,000 for local charities, including $75,000+ in 2025 alone, with support directed to 13 local organisations in the most recent year. The growth of the event reflects a sustained and structured commitment to community investment, underpinned by strong participation from sponsors, players and supporters across the region. In 2025 there was $35,000 in prizes and giveaways on the day plus the mega raffle of a $39,000 club house. The event is a clear winner for the biggest event of its kind in North Queensland. Beneficiaries over the years have included a wide range of vital services and organisations such as Chances House, BMA-CQ Rescue, Ronald McDonald House, Community Accommodation Support Agency, Mackay Surf Life Saving Club, Kidney Support Network, Wildlife Rehabilitation Queensland, Mackay Netball Association, Project Pink, Mackay Hospital Foundation, Mackay Community Visitors Association, Trudy Crowley Foundation & Mackay Cutters Change the Game with a main focus of “Funds Stay Local”. The event wouldn’t be possible without the reoccurring support from some well-known local business who identify the benefits of supporting this well-known charitable event with companies like Key Solutions Group, QCCS, MM Electrical Mackay, Blacksmith Jacks, GB Electrical, RIMEX, SCIG, Harvey Norman and Penske all supporting the event year on year. The 10th Annual Charity Golf Day in 2025 marked a significant milestone, both in scale and impact. With more than 100 donated raffle prizes and auction items, alongside experiential packages valued at over $70,000, the event delivered another strong result for the community. A defining moment came when Mr Rod Allen from Inspec Industries won the $39,000 SCIG Clubhouse, before making the immediate decision to donate it directly to the Trudy Crowley Foundation – an act that captured the true meaning of the day. M&P Services has consistently acknowledged that the success of the event is driven by collective community contribution, with enduring support from sponsors, participants, volunteers and the Mackay Golf Club forming the foundation of its continued growth. Looking ahead, preparations are now underway for the 2026 M&P Services / Key Solutions Group Annual Charity Golf Day, scheduled for Friday 14th August 2026 at Mackay Golf Course. The event will once again bring together business and community leaders for a day centred on connection, competition and measurable local impact. With demand increasing each year and the event traditionally reaching capacity through returning supporters, organisers are encouraging expressions of interest via marketing@mpservices.net.au.

Founded in 1986 as a modest mechanical and panel shop, M&P Services always punched above its weight. Building on a strong reputation, the family business quickly became a trusted name within the local community. Forty years on, it has grown into an enterprise with not just regional, but national impact. What began as a hands-on service operation, built on practical skill, long hours, and a commitment to getting the job done right, has evolved into a diverse enterprise spanning fleet servicing, transport/logistics and, more recently, the manufacturing of portable buildings and homes. Managing director, Max Lamb Jr, explained: “We're making some pretty big waves against national competition, and we've got a lot of unique products that we've developed ourselves which are changing the way portables are getting utilised.” Their biggest success has been in creating mobile wheeled infrastructure, sought out by clients within mining and construction. These ‘mobile crib units’, fully equipped with all modern amenities, have become an integral part of numerous projects across Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea. The units offer rapid deployment, are easy to transport and offer superior safety, productivity and are especially popular in the current climate providing significant and measurable fuel savings on mining circuits. They cater to industries such as mining, construction, civil and remote area services, providing workers with comfortable, fully functional living and workspaces even in the most challenging environments. Dedicated to staying local, M&P Services manufactures from their purpose built 15m facility in Paget, meeting or exceeding rigorous industry standards. According to Max Jr, the company’s ability to tailor these solutions to the unique demands of clients across various sectors has been key to its ongoing success. As M&P Services expands its operations, it continues to innovate in the field of transportable and modular buildings. Looking back, the company’s success began all the way back in 1986 with Max’s father (Max Snr) and his business partner Peter Brayshaw (dec). “They were just two mates that would hang out on weekends, go fishing and skiing, and have a beer together.” Max Jr said. “At M&P they were performing both mechanical and panel repairs on vehicles, trucks, and trailers. “Fast forward to 40 years, and we're still in the service industry, but the focus has changed.” Though their output has evolved, Max pointed out, the same mentality underpins the mission as it did in 1986. “In the early days of the business, Dad built a good reputation by getting the job done, whether it be loading trucks on weekends, working weekends and all hours of the day or night, as required. “His mentality to just roll your sleeves up and get through the work laid the foundation for what we do now; we just get on with the job, working to a good time frame, and working closely with clients to make sure that they're satisfied.” The strength of M&P’s family values is evidenced by the long-standing staff who have stayed loyal to the business over decades. “The longevity of my employees a makes my job much easier and contributes to easy," Max said. “A large percentage of our staff have been with us more than five and ten years, a few over fifteen and twenty.” Max Jr himself has been with the company since 1992, taking the helm and buying into the business when Mr Brayshaw retired in 1997. “Having worked at the business as an apprentice mechanic from 1992, I've been part of the stunning transformation since," he said. “I still enjoy coming to work every day after 34 years” With his father’s hardworking genes and a vision for design and growth, Max Lamb Jr has led M&P to become one of the largest portable building manufacturers in regional Queensland, but his sights remain firm on the road ahead. What’s a business value you uphold? Giving back to the community. We’re very proud of our annual golf day; we’re holding our eleventh this year. Last year, we raised $75,000 to distribute amongst 13 different local charities. mpservices.net.au

Part 1
Mackay Hospital Foundation is well-known for signature events that bring the community together, and Dancing With Heart is no different.
On Friday March 31, eight local identities will take to the dance floor to showcase their individual dance styles in support of local hospitals.
Each dancer has been working with Dolly Louw from Fame Talent School to fine tune their skills on the dance floor, with each dance choreographed especially for the individual performer.
Over the next three weeks, Mackay Life will profile each of the dancers.
Read on to meet the first three.

Why did you get involved in Dancing with Heart?
I have a “say yes to scary stuff and then figure it out” policy. Plus, owning a local insurance agency, I have a huge interest in making sure our local community hospitals have everything they need to make patients and medical staff as comfortable as they can be. In the event that one of my clients is in an emergency and needs medical attention, I love thinking that I’ve done just a little bit towards help for the Hospital Foundation funds, meaning my clients will be cared for while I’m looking after their insurance claim.
How have your dance lessons with Dolly been?
Dolly is nothing short of a magician! She’s got this non-dancer whipping out a routine to a very funky song – I’m telling everyone I know that Dolly from Fame is fantastic.
What song gets you on the dance floor faster than any other?
Any! Even if there isn’t a dance floor, I’ll make one.
What is your go to dance move?
I wouldn’t call what I do “dance moves” but I just love music and moving my body to it. I have been known to bust out some random Tina Turner moves every now and again after a wine or two.
What are you expecting from everyone else’s dance moves on the night?
I know Dolly will have everyone dancing up a storm so I know there will be some great routines. I just keep reminding myself though that it isn’t about me – It’s about the charity and fundraising for the fantastic work that Mackay Hospital Foundation do.

Why did you get involved in Dancing with Heart?
Because I had to. Nothing beats my dance moves. I love performing. On a serious note, the thought of being a part of a great cause with local businesses owners and some great everyday Mackay people.
How have your dance lessons with Dolly been?
It’s been physical. Completely organised chaos. She has made remarks about needing to “loosen my hips” but I think that’s her opinion. She’s energetic and very patient.
How is your dance coming along?
Fantastic. I am starting to believe that the student is becoming the teacher. I’m ready and been practicing every day. My rhythm flows like butter and that’s coming from Dolly herself.
What song gets you on the dance floor faster than any other?
I am a sucker for the Nutbush, Macarena and Pony, some of the great classics that’s make you move your feet.
What is your go to dance move?
Believe it or not I’m a great dancer but the go to move for me is drowning boy in the wheel chair, don’t judge.
What are you expecting from everyone else’s dance moves on the night?
Setting expectations could possibly be the root cause to failure. The expectation is we all enjoy ourselves and put on a great show for everyone.
On a final note, this journey has been brilliant. I have gained so much experience from everyone. The Mackay Hospital Foundation is amazing and what better a cause to be part of. Supporting local and promoting my brand Harvey Norman in Mackay, what else could I ask for.

Why did you get involved in Dancing with Heart?
Because it’s helping people in need and it’s very meaningful.
How have your dance lessons with Dolly been?
Dolly is fantastic! I just need more practice to get better at it.
What song gets you on the dance floor faster than any other?
Some songs I can understand, like mandopop.
What is your go to dance move?
I am dancing Gangnam style.
What are you expecting from everyone else’s dance moves on the night?
A bit funny or good atmosphere dance also dancing with heart
Make sure to grab next week’s paper for more profiles.

Last week, Mackay's premier event on the International Women's Day calendar was a roaring success, with over 550 women, men, and students coming together to celebrate and learn from each other. The Resource Industry Network (RIN) pulled out all the stops to make this a memorable event that highlighted the progress made towards gender equity and the work that still needs to be done.
Katie Brennan, an AFLW player, inspired the guests with her keynote speech, sharing her wisdom on the three keys to creating successful teams: resilience, belonging, and connection. The panel discussion that followed was just as enlightening, featuring three remarkable women: Courtney Drysdale from Crop Wise - Mackay, Charlotte Nash-Stewart from FIELD Engineers, and Linda Murry from BHP. They shared their views on what equity means to them and how pushing through the discomfort can lead to success.
The event was a perfect mix of education, connection, and fun, thanks to the great food, the amazing emcee Kat Davidson, and Mayor Greg Williamson's inspiring speech on gender equity. The generous support from the major partner sponsors, including BOQ Mackay City, Mackay Regional Council, BHP/BMA Mitsubishi Alliance, and Glencore, and the Student Ticket Sponsor Local Buying Foundation, made it possible to deliver such a remarkable event.
The event was a reminder that while much has been achieved in the fight for gender equality, there is still much to be done. With events like RIN's International Women's Day celebration, we can continue to inspire the next generation and bring long-term change to the issues facing women in the workforce, both regionally and globally.

Hitch your wagon to a star and mark your calendar for the Friends of the MECC's Morning Melodies as ‘Blue Bayou’ graces the MECC stage on Friday 24 March.
Written and performed by Nadia Sunde, the cabaret singer and her band will deliver a nostalgic setlist that will transport audiences back to the golden age of country-pop music. The recipient of multiple national and international awards for her songwriting and performance, Nadia is no stranger to the country genre.
“Mum bought me the Readers Digest Country & Western songbook when I was a kid because I just couldn't get enough country from the radio,” Sunde says.
Evoking the nostalgia of the country pop music genre, Mackay locals are in for a morning of delightful entertainment, featuring down-home warmth, charm, and masterful storytelling.
“It was all Jerry Reed, Willie Nelson, John Denver, Dolly Parton and the rest of the gang for this little girl. They were my heroes and their storytelling built something in me,” Sunde continued.
The songstress is thrilled to take the Mackay audience on an unforgettable musical journey, showcasing the works of renowned country artists.
“Blue Bayou’ has felt a bit like a homecoming. It's beautiful to bring these songs to audiences across the state who feel the same way.”
Ticket holders will be treated to complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits before the performance, and will have the opportunity to win exciting lucky door prizes from Guardian Pharmacy Walkerston and Whitsunday Biscuit Factory. With tickets starting at just $15 each, The Friends at the MECC’s Morning Melodies is an affordable and enjoyable day out for Mackay locals.

Woodturning is an age-old craft that has been around for centuries. It involves shaping wood into various shapes and sizes using a lathe and other hand tools. From bowls and platters to pens and kitchen utensils, woodturning can create beautiful and functional items that can last a lifetime.
One of the greatest benefits of woodturning is the ability to create unique, one-of-a-kind gifts. These handmade items carry a special sentimental value and can be cherished for years to come. Unlike mass-produced items, each piece of woodturning is unique, with its own character and flaws, adding to its charm and beauty.
Not only do wooden gifts make great sentimental gifts, but they also offer a number of practical benefits. Wood is a renewable resource and can be sustainably sourced, making it an eco-friendly choice. It is also durable and long-lasting, making it a practical choice for items such as cutting boards, utensils, and bowls. Wooden items can also be treated with natural oils and waxes, making them safe for food use and easy to maintain.
Whether you are looking for a thoughtful and sentimental gift or a practical item for your own home, woodturning is a great choice. Check out the range of wooden items for sale and see woodturning in action at the Mackay Woodturners Association’s Easter event. Admission is free of charge.

One of Australia's most beloved electronic music duos will arrive in Airlie Beach at the end of March, hitting the road on tour for the first time since late 2018.
Peking Duk – the “most bonkers” electro-house titans – will play across North Queensland in a massive Australian headline tour, including Magnums Airlie Beach on March 24.
With over a decade of consecutive “bangers” in their repertoire, the ARIA Award-winning pair of Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles are headed regional for the first time, hitting spots they’ve never played before.
Since they garnered attention in 2012 with the release of a Passion Pit bootleg mix, Peking Duk have been experts at getting the party started for close to a decade – and now they’ll be dropping into the Whitsundays.
From their four-times platinum single ‘High’, to the triple-platinum witching hour anthem ‘Stranger’, the duo have racked up over 530 million streams and played to fans worldwide.
With their solo projects behind them, Peking Duk have reunited and released their new hit ‘Spend It’ featuring Circa Waves – a release which urged them on tour, to the benefit of fans, for the first time since their 2019 ‘Biggest Tour Ever.’
Through March and April, they’re guaranteeing that Peking Duk not only tastes good but also sounds even better.
Don’t miss them when they arrive in Airlie Beach with a whole new set of tunes.

‘Hey Bartender,’ have you heard the news? The Blues – and some pop - are coming to ‘The Old Landmark’ in Airlie Beach this month for a “Movie Marathon Weekend” of two shows.
For the first-time ever, The Soul Men Blues Brothers Show will present their brand-new tribute to another cult-classic film. They’ll introduce Airlie audiences to their ‘Tribute To The Commitments Show’ on Saturday, March 18.
Performing music from the movie, complete with horn section, trio of female backing singers, and powerhouse front man, the Soul Men will cover the rock, the soul and the pop classics from the 1991 musical-comedy. Listen in for Mustang Sally, I Can’t Stand the Rain, A Little Tenderness, and more.
Then on Sunday they’re back in their regular Blues Brother outfits to play The Pub on March 19, continuing the legendary legacy of the hit 1980s musical-comedy featuring the not-quite-real and not-quite-pretend musical duo of Jake and Elwood Blues.
Greg Mulvhill, a lifelong Blues Brothers fan who’s donned the shoes, sunglasses, and trilby of Jake Blues for more than two decades, and Brent Moetara, a vocal powerhouse as his brother Elwood, are returning by popular demand to the Airlie Beach Hotel.
The pair will croon onto the Bar Top Stage at locals’ favourite local for a free show afternoon taking audiences through the repertoire of the film’s soundtrack, capturing the infectious humour and rampant, rollicking spirit of the Blues Brothers like no one else while they do it.
The Soul Men have a more-than-reverence for the red-hot soul, rhythm, and blues that they embody as the Brothers -- they’ve taken their band all around Australia on a ‘Machine from God’ to share the pleasure that comes with the Blues Brothers' exuberant music and love for life.
Speaking of music, there’s plenty to look forward to: Both shows will comprise the Airlie Beach Hotel's biggest-ever band, a 12-piece, miniature orchestra with phenomenal rhythm and horn sections producing a more-than-energetic performance. And there’ll be the smooth voice of Mulvhill and the harmonica wizardry of Moetara to listen out for too.
It’s like a “time machine to an era when dropping the bass meant dropping your bass guitar and they shouldn’t be missed,” said Mulvhill.
“Every member of The Soul Men knows their music and what it takes to bring the house down - in the best possible way,” he said.
Don’t miss the songs from Soul Man to Rubber Biscuit, Sweet Home Chicago to Gimme Some Lovin’, Rawhide, and more. It’ll be a night of laughter and foot-stompin’ fun that will have Airlie Beach going crazy.
The Soul Men will combine the comedy, music, and mayhem of both The Commitments and the original Blues Brothers on March 18 and 19 in two free shows at the Airlie Beach Hotel.

Perfectly timed to coincide with International Women’s Day, the powerful orchestral masterpiece composed by local musician, Karen Jacobsen, was released on Wednesday to great acclaim.
The Misogyny Opus full album aims to address issues of equality by using the famous misogyny speech given by Prime Minister Julia Gillard ten years ago.
Jacobsen has taken these words and transformed them into an engaging and enchanting song, the music video featuring many well-known faces who have since come out in support.
“10 years have passed since the iconic speech by the 27th Prime Minister of Australia and as predicted by those attending parliament that day, history was made,” said Karen.
“Julia Gillard’s justifiable anger at the shocking misogyny she had experienced during her leadership, exploded into a speech which has survived the test of time.”
With the world premiere taking place at the MECC in Mackay in April, it is also anticipated that the musical rendition will create positive impacts for generations to come.
This ground-breaking work, which is part of Australian history and Australian women’s history, will be performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra which is a huge coup for our region.
“Let’s get behind this momentous occasion, and share the message of the importance of equality, while experiencing an exceptional original musical work in concert,” said Karen.
There will be buses available to transport Whitsunday audiences down to Mackay for the premiere and all locals are invited to this share this opportunity to support a fair and equal world.

The Whale director Darren Aronofsky has somewhat perfected the harrowing character study. Sometimes, he’s done so through magical realism, as in Black Swan with its expertly tantalising verisimilitude, blurring the real and unreal. Other times – and this is where The Whale tends, like the lilt of a dead flower – he has done so through a torturous, unfettered, rending realism, exemplified in the agonising watch that is Requiem for a Dream.
And the secret to that reifying of life's most painful abstractions is Aronofsky's ability to elevate his performers. Somehow, he has continued to lift the bar, as it were. How is it that someone with the credentials of Brendan Fraser – relegated to roles as an action hero or a himbo – can put to screen such a heart-wrenching performance as he gives in The Whale? Part of that may be the years of pent-up frustration on Fraser’s part after being blacklisted by Hollywood in an alleged sexual-assault scandal (Fraser the victim, it must be noted), but that, for this film, is neither here nor there. For Fraser, this isn't a return to form – he's never shown this dramatic range before - it's a pioneering foray into this new acting territory.
As the reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher Charlie, Fraser attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, played by girl-of-the-moment Sadie Sink of Stranger Things fame. Here, Fraser the performance of not only a lifetime but of any actor anywhere in the last ten years. It's no going out on a limb to say that he'll be duly rewarded with Best Actor at this year's Academy Awards.
Watching The Whale, one is stunned by his deeply touching embodiment of the role, which lifts everything around it, including Aronofsky’s film – an at times melodramatic and ordinary picture. Brendan Fraser makes The Whale worth watching.
The Whale will arrive at the Bowen Summergarden Cinema on Saturday, March 25.

The community are invited to “be enchanted by the talents of St Catherine’s Catholic College students” as they take to the stage for their upcoming College musical Beauty and The Beast.
Students have been busy in rehearsals learning lines, dance routines, singing, and perfecting the musical score for the upcoming production set to hit the stage in April.
The College invites the community to come and sing along to their production of the 1991 Disney romantic fantasy film.
More than 25 students ranging from Year 7 to Year 12 make up the ensemble playing instruments, being cast in the dance troupe, or shining in a lead role.
College Cultural Middle Leader P-12 and Musical Director Mrs Betsy Atkinson praised the work of the many students and staff involved in putting together the production.
"The cast and crew are so excited to present 'Beauty and The Beast' at the PEC," she said.
"We have had an absolute blast putting it together and would love for our community to come "be our guest" and enjoy the show."
College Principal Mr Luke Thomson said events such as college musicals were important as it is another way the College aims to provide every student with the opportunity to shine.
"The opportunity for our students to perform at such a professional venue is one that our students will treasure and look back on with great pride for years to come,” he said.
